Evelyn’s POV

I am going to pee on myself.

Oh shit!

My heart stutters as I slowly back away. Pip burrows further in my scarf.

I have heard the legends, the mountain guardians who watched the boundary between the East and the West, but I'd never believed they truly existed.

Everyone began backing away as the ground trembled beneath heavy footsteps. I can hear someone whispering prayers, another sobbing quietly. Even the horses whinnied and tried to pull free. A servant boy drops the box he was holding and dives beneath one of the carriages, trembling.

The stench of fear rises around me as we all simultaneously retreat.

But trolls keep coming.

They are massive, twice the height of any man, their bodies made of something that looks like living stone. Moss clings to their shoulders, and their eyes glow faintly like burning embers. Each step they take makes the earth groan.

“Stay back!” one of the knights barks, drawing his sword.

“I don't think they are going to listen to him,” Pip whis

  • The Mad King's Mate   CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR: PROMISES OF FREEDOM

Evelyn’s POV I haven't seen Urelle in a while. Mireya, the witch that checked up on me before, keeps coming once every three days to check on the baby. She's younger than Urelle, softer in a way the old bitch can never be.Mireya doesn’t expect me to be waiting when she walks through the door. That is the first mistake she makes. The witch doesn’t expect me to be waiting. That is the first mistake she makes. She enters the small sitting room just after dusk, her steps slowing the moment she sees me. Not fear… yet. I rise slowly from the chair.Pip remains hidden, tucked beneath my shawl, still and silent in a way that would frighten anyone who knew her.“You sent for me,” Mireya says, stopping just inside the doorway. She is right. I did ask for her which is deviating from the normal routine of her coming to me. But, time is running out and this is one of the last pieces that needs to fall in place for the escape.“You shouldn’t be pacing,” she murmurs. “It agitates the child.”I t

  • The Mad King's Mate   CHAPTER FORTY-THREE: THE ONE WHO APOLOGIES

Evelyn's POV Pip hasn't really spoken to me since Wren snuck her in. We seem to have come to some sort of quiet agreement of giving each other space but I've stayed more than three months without seeing her… I don't want to give her space. I miss my best friend. I agree that she was right and I should have probably listened to her about Arkan and my entire homewrecking escapade.Whoooshhhhh! What to do, what to do?She is perched on the high beam near the ceiling, pretending to groom her wings while very obviously watching me pace the length of the room. I let her. I’ve learned that pushing Pip never works; she comes around on her own terms or not at all.I let out a sigh as I pause to stand underneath her. I take back my words, I'm not waiting for her to come to me. The silence is stabbing. I can’t take it anymore. “Say something….” I plead. “I'm sorry, okay. Gosh… sorry is too small of a word. I messed up. I should have listened to you, but I was stupid and you have every reason

  • The Mad King's Mate   CHAPTER FORTY-TWO: DEATH TO THE ARCHITECT

Evelyn’s POV I feel him before I see him.The house knows first. The air tightens, the way it does when the ward is disturbed by something. It confirms the thought that has been churning in my mind, Arkan is ancient… Something not normal. The baby shifts uneasily inside me. I sit upright in the chair by the window, my hands resting on my stomach.“Easy,” I murmur. “I know.”Pip appears on the windowsill, wings stiff. “He’s here.”“I know,” I repeat.Pip goes to hide in the closet and I plead with the goddess not to let him detect her presence. I smooth my hands over my dress, though there is no one to impress. I stay where I am, seated near the window, spine straight. I will not rise for him. I will not rush to meet him halfway… even though my entire being longs to be in his arms.I guess rejection doesn't obliterate the mate bond. The door opens without ceremony.Arkan steps inside. He looks almost gentle. No crown. No armor. His hair is tied back simply, his sleeves unrolled, h

  • The Mad King's Mate   CHAPTER FORTY-ONE: THE BABY KNOWS

Evelyn's POVNoon is the worst time of day.The sun hangs high and cruel, burning through the thin clouds and pressing down on everything beneath it. It's hot, sweltering and so not for me. I swear Urelle has the ability to change the temperature and weather within the wards. I'm starting to think my suffering gets her high because the weather always seems to be on the extreme. EVERY. DAMN. TIME.I pace the narrow path that circles the garden.Back and forth.Back and forth.I thought being out here would calm the storm brewing within me, but it seems that I was wrong. I barely make it another step when the pain hits.It isn't the soft ones that fumble your insides a little bit. No…. It spears through me, sharp and sudden, stealing the breath from my lungs. Gasping, I brace myself against the low stone wall that borders the path, knees threatening to buckle.“Not now,” I whisper through clenched teeth. “Please.”The pain answers by tightening. It feels like something inside me is tw

  • The Mad King's Mate   CHAPTER FORTY: FLICKER OF HOPE

Evelyn's POV Something is going on.The air is tinged with it. People were careful around me. I noticed it in small ways.Servants paused whenever I entered the room. Guards avoided my eye, The women who brought my meals spoke softly, like I was ill. It is starting to get annoying, really…. But, it spoke of something… something brewing on the horizon. I rest a hand on my stomach out of habit. The baby shifts, impatient. Too aware.“I know,” I murmur. “I feel it too.”The woman who comes to check on me the next morning, Mireya, keeps her eyes fixed on my belly. She smells of herbs and smoke and something older. Witch-scent.That's weird…Urelle is the only witch that comes around to actually check on the baby's progress. The rest of her bitchy friends just laze around and sneer at me all day. The fact that the servant bringing me food is a witch… something is definitely up.“Everything progresses,” she notes, withdrawing her hands. Her voice is steady, but her pulse flutters. “As

Evelyn's POV Present day I let out a groan as I dry heave into the nearby bushes. Whelp! There goes my breakfast.Sighing, I straighten up, covering my eyes from the unnaturally bright sun that almost blinds me. Fucking Urella. This is what you get from pissing off the said witch that has the ability to control the weather in your prison. I only exchanged her sugar with salt…I know you're probably wondering what's going on.Let me bring you up to speed. It's been three months.Three months since my supposed erasthai marked my cousin. Three months since he rejected me. Three months since I've been imprisoned in this crazy house that I can swear is alive. The house is hidden by magic… layers of it, thick and humming, like a cage made of air. I can feel it when I wake and when I sleep, pressing against my skin. I know I cannot cross the boundary.
