LOGINThe next morning Gerald sat behind his desk with a fresh cup of coffee that had already gone cold. The city looked the same from his office windows, but the weight from last night still sat on his shoulders.
He kept seeing Lily’s face when he kissed her. He kept feeling the way her body had responded to him. It was becoming a problem.
Mako walked in without knocking and dropped into the chair across from him.
“We have a mess,” Mako said.
Gerald leaned back. “Talk.”
“Cleo has been busy since the party. She is telling anyone who will listen that Lily is nothing but a paid sex toy. A temporary hole you bought for fun. Before she started talking, people were actually starting to believe you might be serious about the girl. They had never seen you act like that over a woman before. You claimed her in public. You almost started a fight with Elliot Rivera over her. Now Cleo is making sure everyone remembers she is just a contract.”
Gerald’s jaw tightened. “Of course she is.”
“It is working,” Mako continued. “Some of the older families are already repeating it. The respect you gained last night is slipping.”
Gerald rubbed a hand over his face. “What else?”
“Luciano wants a meeting this evening. They finally agreed to sit down.”
That made Gerald look up. The Luciano family had refused him for months. They had called him unfinished. A man with no real family behind him.
“Interesting timing,” Gerald said.
“Very.”
They spent the next hour going over shipment problems. One of their routes near the docks had been delayed again. Two men had been questioned by local police and released. Nothing major, but enough to annoy Gerald. Mako gave clean updates and clear options. Gerald gave short orders. The usual rhythm between them.
Near the end of the discussion Mako closed the folder and looked at his boss directly.
“You need to tell her,” he said.
Gerald frowned. “Tell who what?”
“Lily. She deserves to know the real reason you brought her in. This was never only about sex. You needed a woman who looked permanent enough to make the other families take you seriously. She is part of the plan. Keeping her in the dark is going to blow up later.”
“No.”
“Gerald—”
“I said no. She does not need to know.”
Mako studied him for a long moment but did not push further. He knew that tone.
Evening came faster than expected. Gerald and Mako arrived at the private restaurant the Lucianos had chosen. It was quiet, expensive, and clearly under their control. Two of their men led them to a private room at the back.
Marco Luciano sat at the head of the table with his younger brother beside him. Both men stood when Gerald entered. Their smiles were wide and warm in the way only mafia smiles could be — friendly on the surface, measuring underneath.
“Gerald,” Marco said, shaking his hand firmly. “Good to finally sit with you. Please, sit.”
Gerald and Mako took their seats. Drinks were poured. Light conversation followed about the city, about recent business, about nothing that mattered. Both Gerald and Mako noticed how comfortable the Lucianos seemed. Too comfortable. Too friendly. It did not match the months of cold rejection.
Finally Marco leaned forward and folded his hands on the table.
“We have been watching you,” he said. “You are expanding faster than most expected. Your routes are clean. Your men are loyal. We are ready to open a new trade line with you. A strong one. We can also help you push further into the eastern docks. Real growth.”
Gerald kept his face neutral. “And the price?”
Marco smiled. “Simple. You hand the girl over to us. Lily. In return you get the new route, our support in expanding your business, and one million dollars on top. Clean transfer. No problems after.”
The room went very quiet.
Mako’s expression did not change, but Gerald felt the shift in the air beside him.
Marco continued, still smiling. “It is the best deal you will get. You receive everything you have been chasing. All of it. For just one girl.”
Gerald stared at him. The anger started low in his stomach and rose fast. He saw Lily’s face from the night before. He felt the way she had kissed him back. He heard her voice when she told him she hated how much she liked what he did to her. The idea of handing her to another man made something violent wake up inside him.
He did not raise his voice. That made it worse.
“No.”
Marco’s smile did not fade. “Think about it. She is a contract. You paid for her. We are offering you more than you paid, plus real power. One girl for an empire move. Most men would take that in a second.”
Gerald stood up slowly. Mako rose with him.
“We are done here,” Gerald said.
Marco leaned back in his chair, still looking calm. “Do not be emotional, Maldovo. This is business. You of all people should understand that.”
Gerald’s hands curled into fists at his sides. The anger was pure now, hot and sharp. He looked at the two Luciano brothers and spoke in a voice that left no room for argument.
“She is not for sale. Not to you. Not to anyone. The next time you mention her name in a deal, we will have a different kind of conversation.”
He turned and walked out. Mako followed close behind. Neither of them spoke until they were back in the car.
Gerald stared straight ahead as the vehicle pulled into traffic. His jaw was locked so tight it hurt.
The Lucianos had smiled while trying to buy her. Cleo was out spreading poison. And the one woman he had told himself was only a toy was becoming the one thing he refused to give up.
The anger kept burning.
Gerald was reviewing numbers on his screen when Mako walked in without knocking. His second-in-command’s face was tighter than usual. He carried a tablet in one hand and closed the door behind him with the other.“You need to see this,” Mako said.Gerald leaned back in his chair. “What now?”Mako placed the tablet on the desk and turned it to face him. “Cleo released this footage earlier today. She sent it to half the families in our circle and also put it online. It is spreading fast.”Gerald’s eyes dropped to the screen. The first video started playing. It was clearly from a club. Dim lights. Loud music. Lily was on the floor in a short, tight outfit, dancing between two men. Their hands were on her body without shame. One man gripped her ass and pulled her back against him. The other slid his hands up her waist and openly cupped her breasts over the thin fabric. Lily was smiling in the video, moving with them, used to the attention. The camera stayed on her long enough that there w
Lily needed to move. The tension from the party, the slap, the kiss, and the way Gerald had taken her the night before sat heavy in her body. She changed into tight black leggings and a sports top, then took the private elevator down to the gym inside the apartment complex. The gym was quiet at that hour. She put on headphones and started with the treadmill, then moved to weights. She pushed herself hard, sweat running down her back, until her arms and legs burned. For a while the physical effort drowned out the noise in her head. When she finished, she grabbed her towel and walked into the women’s locker room. The door had barely closed behind her when she heard voices near the far lockers.“That is the girl Gerald Maldovo has been keeping,” one woman said. “ Everyone knows she is just a paid sex toy. Nothing serious.”“I heard the same,” another replied. “He only brought her to the party for show. She is not his woman. She is just the current hole he is fucking, disgusting.”Lily s

The limousine ride back to the penthouse was silent. Gerald sat close to Lily, one hand resting on her thigh, but he did not speak. The city lights slid past the windows. Lily could still feel the ghost of Elliot’s hand on her skin and the sharp sting of the slap she had given him. Her heart had not slowed down. When they stepped into the penthouse, Gerald closed the door harder than necessary. He turned to face her. His eyes were dark and stormy.“You should not have been alone with him,” he said.Lily dropped her clutch on the table. “I went to the restroom. I did not ask him to follow me.”“He put his hands on you.”“I handled it.”Gerald stepped closer. “I saw the mark on your wrist. No one touches what is mine.”Lily’s breath caught at the raw possession in his voice. “I am not a thing you own.”“You are tonight.” His voice dropped. “You have been since the day you signed those papers.”He reached up and cupped the back of her neck. For a second they only stared at each other. Th
Lily touched Gerald’s arm lightly. “I need to use the restroom.”He looked down at her, eyes still dark from the earlier tension with Elliot. “Do not take long.”She gave a short nod and walked away from the main hall. The restroom was down a quiet corridor lined with soft lights and dark wood. She pushed the door open and stepped inside. The space was private and elegant, with marble counters and large mirrors. She had only been there a few seconds when the door opened again.Cleo walked in. Her black dress clung to her body and her face was tight with anger.“You just could not stay in your place, could you?” Cleo said. Her voice was low and sharp.Lily turned slowly and faced her. “What do you want now?”Cleo stepped closer. “I want you to understand something. You are a paid hole. Nothing more. Gerald will use you and throw you away like the others. Do not walk around here like you belong.”Lily’s eyes narrowed. “You sound scared. Is that what this is? You are scared he is keepin
Gerald kept his hand firm on the small of Lily’s back as they stepped into the grand hall. Crystal lights hung from the high ceiling and threw soft gold across the polished floor. Long tables covered in white cloth stretched through the room. Men in dark tailored suits and women in expensive dresses filled the space. The low music mixed with the sound of glasses and quiet conversation.Lily felt the air change the moment they entered. Heads turned. Conversations paused. Eyes moved over the short red dress that clung to her body and left her back bare. She kept her chin high even as her pulse quickened. She had been stared at before in clubs and on streets, but these stares carried more weight. These people had real power.Gerald felt every look. He saw the way the men’s eyes dropped to Lily’s legs and the deep cut of her dress. He saw the women studying her with envy and calculation. A dark satisfaction settled in his chest. They all wanted what was his. They could look. They could
