DON VALETTI'S POV

I was on my feet before Renzo finished the sentence.

"Say that again."

"Someone shot at the car," Renzo said, his voice steady despite everything, the same controlled calm he always wore when the situation demanded it most.

"Valentina's fine. Not hit. We got clear."

"Fine?" I repeated the word like it tasted wrong in my mouth.

"My daughter was shot at in broad daylight, in the middle of the city, and you're telling me she's fine."

"I'm telling you she's alive, Don. I'm telling

VALENTINA’S POVMy father let me go out on Saturday.I hadn’t expected him to. After the dinner, I had spent a whole night waiting for him to knock on my door and tell me Daniel was no longer welcome in the house. He never did. He ate his breakfast, read the newspaper, and when I told him Daniel had invited me to lunch, he put the paper down and looked at me for a long time.“Where?”“A café near the river. It’s public. It’s full of people.”“Renzo goes with you.”“Dad.”“Renzo goes, or you stay here.” He picked the paper up again. “He’ll keep his distance.”That was the best I was going to get, so I took it.Daniel was waiting outside the café when I arrived, leaning against a lamppost with his hands in his pockets, and he straightened the second he saw me. He had on a grey sweater and no jacket, and he looked younger in daylight. Less careful.“You came,” he said.“I said I would.”“I know. I just wasn’t sure your father would let you.”“He didn’t make it easy.” I looked back over m

RENZO'S POVI watched the footage four times before Leo came in with the coffee. It was past midnight. The security room was dark except for the monitors, and every one of them showed the same hallway, the one that ran along the east side of the house. Daniel walked into the frame at 8:14. He didn't hurry. He passed the washroom door without turning his head, the way a man passes something he already knows is there."He didn't even look at it," Leo said, putting a cup next to my hand."No.""Maybe he didn't hear her right.""She said second door on the left. He walked past two."Leo didn't answer. He pulled a chair over and sat down beside me, and we watched it again.Daniel reached the end of the hall and stopped at the east stairs. He looked up first, then down. Then he put his hand flat on the wall beside the stair door, almost like he was feeling for something, and stood like that for a few seconds. After that he went down three steps and sat on the fourth, with his hands between

VALENTINA'S POVDaniel arrived at 6:58 pm, two minutes early, and Renzo made him wait at the gate for four more.I watched from the window of the small sitting room. Renzo took the bottle out of Daniel's hands, turned it over, checked the seal, the label, the bottom. Then he handed it to Leo, who carried it away somewhere I couldn't see. Daniel stood there with his hands open and a polite smile, like a man who had expected exactly this."They're being thorough," my father said behind me. He had come in without a sound. "Good.""Dad, he's just a guest.""Nobody is just a guest in this house." He straightened his cuffs. "Come. I want him seated before the soup goes cold."I found Renzo in the hallway on my way to the dining room. He was alone, checking his phone, and he put it away the moment he saw me."The bottle was clean," he said. "I tested it myself. Nothing in it, nothing under the label.""Then you can relax a little.""That's not my job.""Renzo." I stopped in front of him. I h

Daniel’s POVI called my father at nine that night, from the second phone, the one that stayed in the drawer unless I needed it.He answered before the first ring ended. That told me he had been waiting."Tell me about today.""Lunch went well." I walked to the window and stood to the side of the curtain, the way I always did. "I met the friend. Clara. She doesn't like me.""Does she matter?""She works with Valentina, and Valentina listens to her. I'd bet money she called Clara tonight and got told to be careful.""Then she's a problem.""A small one. She asked which firm I work for. I think she meant here in Russia"My father was quiet for a second. "And?""I told her it was a small one nobody knows. She let it go, but I know she'll look it up later.""Then there will be something to find." His voice was flat, the way it got when he was already moving to the next thing. "I'll have the website rebuilt tomorrow. Real names, real clients. Anyone who checks will see a boring little comp

VALENTINA'S POVRenzo drove me to lunch because my father said so, and I didn't have the energy to argue. We had barely spoken since the garden. He kept both hands on the wheel and his eyes on the road. I kept mine on my phone, reading Daniel's last message for the third time.‘Can't wait to meet her properly.’"I'll sit by the door," Renzo said when he parked."You don't have to come inside.""Your father wants me inside."I got out without answering. It was easier than saying what I really thought, which was that having him in the same room made everything harder.Clara was already at a table by the window. She jumped up and hugged me, then held me at arm's length. "You look good. Rested. It's weird.""Thanks, I think.""It's a compliment." Her eyes went over my shoulder. "And there's your shadow. He looks thrilled."I looked back. Renzo had taken a table near the door, his back resting on the wall, a menu open in front of him that he wasn't reading."Ignore him.""I'm trying. It's

  • The Mafia Heiress He Let Go    Chapter Seventy-Two

VALENTINA'S POVI woke up annoyed with myself before I even opened my eyes. One question. That was all it had been. A man curious about the house his girlfriend grew up in, asking where a room was, and I had spent half the night turning it into something else because Renzo's suspicion had apparently taken up permanent residence in my head, whether I wanted it there or not.I got up, got dressed, and told myself firmly that I wasn't going to waste today the way I had wasted last night.Clara called around ten, her voice bright through the phone, carrying with it the kind of ordinary cheerfulness that felt almost foreign after the week I'd had. "Okay, you have to tell me everything. How was the big reunion dinner?""It was good," I said, surprising myself with how easily the words came. "Really good, actually.""Details. Now."I found myself smiling as I told her about it, the restaurant, the easy conversation, the way it had felt almost normal for the first time in months. I left out t
