The door clicked shut behind Dante, and I stood there for a long moment, my lips still tingling from his kiss. My heart was hammering against my ribs like a caged animal, and I couldn't tell if it was fear or fury or something far more dangerous.

Probably all three.

I looked down at my ruined dress, the white silk now stained with rain and blood and the chaos of the past hour. My engagement to Angelo had been a prison. My marriage to Dante was a different kind of cage entirely, one wrapped in marble and crystal and the promise of violence.

But at least this cage had better lighting.

I needed to move. To think. To figure out what the hell I had just agreed to. I walked toward the door, my bare feet leaving wet prints on the polished floor, and pulled it open.

A man stood in the hallway, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression carefully neutral. He was younger than Dante, maybe late twenties, with sandy brown hair and intelligent blue eyes that assessed me with quiet curiosity.

"Mrs. Donovan," he said, the title sounding foreign on his tongue. "I'm Marcus. Mr. Donovan asked me to escort you to your room."

"My room," I repeated. "Not his room?"

Something flickered in Marcus's eyes. Amusement, perhaps. "Mr. Donovan values his privacy. And his sleep. He mentioned you might be... spirited."

"Spirited," I said flatly. "That's one word for it."

"This way." Marcus turned and began walking down the corridor, and I had no choice but to follow. The estate was a labyrinth of marble and mahogany, priceless paintings and ancient sculptures, every corner dripping with obscene wealth. It should have felt cold, but there was warmth here too, in the soft lighting and the subtle scent of cedar and something floral.

"Where exactly am I?" I asked, my voice echoing in the vast hallway. "I mean, I know this is Dante Donovan's estate, but where is this? How far from the city?"

"About forty minutes," Marcus replied. "The Donovan estate sits on three hundred acres of private land. No neighbors. No unexpected visitors. The security is... comprehensive."

"Comprehensive," I echoed. "You mean I can't leave."

Marcus stopped walking and turned to face me. His expression was still neutral, but there was something almost apologetic in his eyes. "You're not a prisoner, Mrs. Donovan. But you are married to the most powerful man in the country. There are people who would love to get their hands on you just to hurt him. The security is for your protection."

"I'm sure it is."

He resumed walking, and I followed, my mind racing. This was the plot of every dark romance novel I had ever secretly devoured. A woman trapped in a gilded cage with a beautiful monster, forced to navigate a world of danger and desire. Except in the books, the heroine always found a way to escape or to carve out her own power.

I intended to do both.

Marcus stopped in front of a door and pushed it open. The room beyond was breathtaking, a suite larger than my entire apartment, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-soaked gardens, a massive canopy bed draped in cream silk, and a fireplace crackling with warmth. A selection of clothes had been laid out on the bed, along with a first aid kit and a tray of food.

"The bathroom is through there," Marcus said, pointing. "Take your time. When you're ready, Mr. Donovan requests your presence in the dining room for a late supper. He said to tell you he doesn't appreciate being kept waiting."

I laughed, the sound sharp and bitter. "He doesn't appreciate being kept waiting. That's rich."

Marcus's lips twitched, and for a moment, I saw a glimpse of genuine humor in his eyes. "I like you already, Mrs. Donovan. You're going to make his life very interesting."

"He married me," I said. "His life was already interesting."

"True." Marcus turned to leave, but paused at the door. "One more thing. The clothes on the bed were selected from a collection Mr. Donovan keeps here. They belonged to..." He hesitated.

"To who?"

"To his mother. Before she passed." He didn't wait for a response, slipping out the door and closing it behind him.

I stood there, alone in this strange, beautiful room, surrounded by echoes of a dead woman's life. His mother. The woman who had died because of my father, according to what I would eventually learn. I didn't know the details yet, but I could feel the weight of it pressing down on me, a shadow that stretched across everything.

I walked to the bed and picked up one of the dresses. It was beautiful, a deep emerald silk that would catch the light like a jewel. His mother's dress. Was he giving it to me as an insult? A message? Or was there something else, something softer, hiding beneath his cold exterior?

I didn't have time to figure it out. I needed to wash the blood and rain from my skin, to put on something that made me feel like myself instead of a pawn in someone else's game. I needed to find a way out of this marriage, or at least to carve out enough power within it to survive.

And I needed to face the man who had just become my husband, the devil who had made a deal with me in the dark.

Thirty minutes later, I walked into the dining room wearing the emerald dress and a mask of confidence I didn't quite feel. The dress fit perfectly, as if it had been made for me, and I had left my hair loose around my shoulders, the dark waves still slightly damp. I had cleaned the cut on my arm and applied a bandage, and I had eaten two of the pastries from the tray in my room because I refused to face Dante Donovan on an empty stomach.

The dining room was enormous, dominated by a table that could seat twenty, but only two places were set at one end. Candles flickered in silver holders, casting warm shadows across the room. And there, at the head of the table, sat Dante.

He had changed into a fresh suit, a deep navy this time, and his hair was still slightly tousled, as if he had run his fingers through it a dozen times. He looked up when I entered, and something flickered in his gray eyes. Surprise, perhaps. Or appreciation.

"You changed," he said.

"You noticed."

"The dress suits you." He gestured to the chair beside him. "Sit."

I walked to the chair, but I didn't sit. Instead, I stood behind it, my hands resting on the back, and met his gaze directly.

"Before I sit, I want to make something clear."

His eyes narrowed, but I saw the ghost of a smile playing at his lips. "I'm listening."

"I married you because I had no choice. Because Angelo would have killed me, or worse, and you were the lesser evil in that moment. But I am not your property. I am not your pawn. I am not some decoration you can trot out at dinner parties and lock away when I become inconvenient."

Dante leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. "Go on."

"I will stay married to you because I don't have a better option right now. But I will not be controlled. I will not be threatened. And if you ever lay a hand on me in anger, if you ever try to hurt me, I will find a way to destroy you, even if it kills me."

The room was silent. The candles flickered. And Dante Donovan looked at me like I was the most fascinating thing he had ever seen.

"You're magnificent," he said softly. "Do you know that?"

"I'm serious."

"I know you are. That's what makes it magnificent." He gestured again to the chair. "Sit, Chloe. I promise I don't bite."

"Liar."

His smile widened, a glimpse of genuine amusement breaking through his controlled facade. "Only when provoked."

I sat. Because I was exhausted and hungry and because the alternative was standing there like a fool. And because, despite everything, I was starting to realize that Dante Donovan was not the enemy I had assumed.

He was something far more complicated. And complications were always the most dangerous.

"I have questions," I said, reaching for the wine glass that had been poured for me.

"I'm sure you do."

"First question. Why did you marry me? The real reason. Not the convenient excuse about hospitality."

Dante was quiet for a moment, his fingers tracing the rim of his glass. Then he said, "Your father."

"My father died when I was twelve."

"I know." His voice was carefully neutral. "What do you know about him?"

"Not much. He was a businessman. He traveled a lot. He died in a car accident." I paused, a chill running down my spine. "You knew him."

"I knew him." Dante's eyes met mine, and there was something terrible in their depths. "I knew him very well. He was my mentor, my friend, and the man who betrayed my family to their enemies."

The glass slipped from my fingers, red wine spilling across the white tablecloth like blood. I stared at Dante, my heart pounding, my mind reeling.

"What are you talking about?"

"Your father," Dante said quietly, "was not a businessman. He was a soldier in my father's organization. And sixteen years ago, he sold us out. He gave our enemies the location of our home, the names of our men, the details of our operations. My parents were killed in the attack that followed."

I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. The world was tilting beneath me, everything I thought I knew about my past crumbling to dust.

"You're wrong," I whispered. "You have to be wrong."

"I have proof." Dante stood, pushing back his chair. "I have letters, documents, testimony from the men who survived. Your father was a traitor. And you..." He stepped closer, his body looming over me, his eyes burning with intensity. "You are his daughter. The daughter of the man who destroyed my family. And I married you."

I looked up at him, my eyes wide, my voice shaking. "Why? Why would you marry me if you think I'm connected to what he did?"

Dante leaned down, his face inches from mine. "Because revenge is a dish best served cold. And because I intended to use you to hurt the people who helped your father betray us. I intended to make you suffer for his sins."

His hand cupped my chin, tilting my face up to meet his gaze. "But that was before I met you. Before you insulted me to my face and kissed me like you were daring me to want more. Before I realized that you are nothing like him. You are fire and chaos and everything I've been missing."

"You married me for revenge," I breathed. "And now?"

Dante's thumb traced my lower lip, his touch gentle despite the darkness in his eyes. "Now I don't know. Now I'm wondering if the greatest revenge would be to keep you close. To make you mine in every way. To prove that I can take the daughter of my enemy and turn her into the one person in this world I trust."

"You're insane."

"Probably." His lips curved into that dangerous smile. "But you're married to me now, Chloe. For better or worse. And I don't believe in divorce."

The safehouse was a small, nondescript building on the outskirts of the city, hidden behind a facade of legitimate businesses and layers of security that would make a fortress jealous. Dante led me inside, his hand never leaving my back, his eyes constantly scanning for threats.Marcus was waiting for us, his face grim. "We lost two men in the firefight," he said quietly. "Rosetti's people were waiting for us. Someone tipped them off.""Victor," Dante said, the name coming out like a curse. "He knows we have the evidence. He's going to move fast.""We need to move faster."Dante nodded, then turned to me. "You should rest. There's a room in the back. I'll come get you when we have a plan.""I'm not leaving you.""Chloe-""I said I'm not leaving you." I crossed my arms, meeting his gaze with a stubbornness that matched his own. "This is my fight too. My father died trying to expose these people. I'm not going to sit in a back room while you risk your life to finish what he started."Da

  • The Mafia King’s Accidental Wife   The Box and The Betrayal

Dante's men moved like shadows, clearing the path ahead as we descended into the underground garage. I was still wearing the emerald dress, hardly appropriate for a midnight break-in, but there was no time to change. Dante had transformed in the minutes since reading my father's letters. The cold control was still there, but beneath it, something dangerous was burning."Stay close to me," he said, his hand finding the small of my back. "If anything happens, you run. You don't look back. You don't try to be a hero.""I'm not the hero type.""You pushed me out of the way of a bullet.""That was instinct. I regret it already."His lips twitched, but the humor didn't reach his eyes. We climbed into a black SUV, and the convoy pulled out of the estate, speeding through the rain-soaked night toward the city. I gave Dante the address of my old apartment, a tiny place in a mediocre neighborhood that I had shared with a roommate before Angelo swept into my life and insisted I move somewhere mo

I pulled away from Dante's touch, my chair scraping against the marble floor as I stood. My heart was a war drum in my chest, and my hands were shaking, but I refused to let him see how deeply his words had cut me."You married me for revenge," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "You planned to use me as a weapon against people I don't even know. And now you're telling me you've changed your mind because I kissed you back?"Dante's expression was unreadable. "I'm telling you the truth. What you do with it is your choice.""My choice." I laughed, the sound hollow and bitter. "I don't have choices, remember? I'm married to the most powerful man in the country. I'm trapped in his fortress with armed guards at every exit. My father was apparently a traitor who got your family killed. And the man I was supposed to marry wants me dead or worse."I stepped closer to him, tilting my head up to meet his gaze. "So tell me, Dante. What choices do I actually have?"He was quiet for a long mom

My hands were shaking on the steering wheel, but I couldn't tell if it was from the cold seeping through my soaked dress or the adrenaline pumping through my veins like liquid fire.I had just escaped my own engagement party.Angelo Rosetti was a monster wearing a designer suit, and I had spent six months pretending not to notice the way his fingers lingered too long on my waist, the cold calculation behind his charming smile. Tonight, I discovered he planned to "share" me with his business partners after the wedding. As if I were property. As if I were nothing. So I ran.The winding Italian road blurred through the sheets of rain, my wedding dress bunched around my thighs, expensive heels abandoned somewhere in the vineyard I had stumbled through.
