The rain was relentless, hammering against the windshield like a thousand tiny fists demanding entry. My hands were shaking on the steering wheel, but I couldn't tell if it was from the cold seeping through my soaked dress or the adrenaline pumping through my veins like liquid fire.

I had just escaped my own engagement party.

Angelo Rosetti was a monster wearing a designer suit, and I had spent six months pretending not to notice the way his fingers lingered too long on my waist, the cold calculation behind his charming smile. Tonight, I discovered he planned to "share" me with his business partners after the wedding. As if I were property. As if I were nothing.

So I ran.

The winding Italian road blurred through the sheets of rain, my wedding dress bunched around my thighs, expensive heels abandoned somewhere in the vineyard I had stumbled through. The GPS on my phone had died twenty minutes ago, and now I was lost in the middle of nowhere, driving a stolen car toward an unknown destination.

The headlights caught something ahead. A massive iron gate, ornate and foreboding, standing open like a mouth waiting to swallow me whole. Beyond it, I could see the silhouette of a palatial estate, warm light spilling from countless windows.

Salvation.

I pressed the accelerator, the tires skidding on the wet gravel as I passed through the gate. The car fishtailed, and I wrestled with the steering wheel, fighting for control. I lost.

The impact wasn't as bad as I expected. The car plowed into a decorative fountain, the crunch of metal and stone echoing through the night. My head snapped forward, then back, and I sat there for a moment, dazed, watching steam rise from the ruined hood.

"Perfect," I muttered, my voice trembling. "Absolutely perfect."

I stumbled out of the car, my bare feet sinking into the wet grass. The rain immediately soaked through my hair, plastering chocolate-brown strands to my face. My wedding dress, a ridiculous confection of silk and lace that Angelo had chosen, weighed a thousand pounds, dragging me down with every step.

The front door of the estate was massive, carved from dark wood and adorned with ironwork. I didn't bother knocking. I pushed it open and stumbled inside, dripping rainwater onto a marble floor that probably cost more than my entire apartment.

The foyer was breathtaking. Crystal chandeliers, sweeping staircases, priceless art adorning the walls. It looked like something from a museum, not someone's home.

"Hello?" I called out, my voice echoing through the vast space. "I'm sorry to intrude, but I had an accident. I need to use a phone."

No response.

I walked deeper into the house, my wet feet leaving a trail of water on the pristine floor. The sound of my own ragged breathing was deafening in the silence. Where was everyone? The estate was massive, but surely someone was home.

I found a study. The door was slightly ajar, warm light spilling through the crack. I pushed it open, my heart pounding.

And there he was.

The man sitting behind the massive mahogany desk looked up from his papers, and the air left my lungs in a single, shocked exhale. He was devastating. That was the only word for it. Dark hair, slightly tousled, falling across a forehead that seemed permanently creased with thought. Eyes the color of storm clouds, piercing and cold. A jaw sharp enough to cut glass, a faint scar through one eyebrow that added to his dangerous appeal.

He was dressed in an impeccably tailored black suit, the top button of his shirt undone, revealing a hint of tanned skin. His hands, resting on the desk, were large and strong, one of them wrapped around a glass of amber liquid.

He looked like a predator. And I had just wandered into his den.

"Who are you?" His voice was a low rumble, deep and commanding, with an accent that hinted at something European. Italian, perhaps. "And why are you bleeding on my floor?"

I looked down. A thin line of blood was trickling down my arm, mixing with the rainwater on my skin. I hadn't even noticed the cut.

"I crashed my car into your fountain," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "I need to use your phone."

He didn't respond. Instead, he rose from his chair, moving with a fluid grace that seemed almost predatory. He was tall, impossibly tall, with broad shoulders that filled the doorframe as he rounded the desk. He stopped a few feet away, his storm-gray eyes sweeping over me with a cold, assessing gaze.

"You're the entertainment," he said flatly. "I should have known. Enzo always sends the most..." He paused, his gaze lingering on my ruined dress. "...interesting gifts."

"I'm sorry, what?"

He took another step closer, and I instinctively stepped back, my spine hitting the doorframe. He loomed over me, his presence overwhelming, filling every inch of my personal space.

"Enzo's new girl, I presume. I told him I wasn't interested in his little offerings." His lips curled into something that wasn't quite a smile. "But you're certainly dressed for the occasion. Very... bridal."

"Listen, you arrogant-"

"Enzo likes to play games," he continued, ignoring my outburst. "Sending a woman dressed like a bride is a new one. Tell me, does he expect me to be tempted? To bed you and send you back to him with stories?"

"You think I'm a prostitute?" The word exploded from my mouth, sharp and incredulous. "I crashed my car! I'm bleeding! I need help!"

I was reaching for my last shred of dignity, but this man was making it impossible. He looked at me like I was an insect he was deciding whether to crush or release.

"Your act is impressive," he said, his voice dripping with condescension. "Almost convincing. But I've seen your kind before. Pretty face, desperate eyes, willing to do anything for a taste of power."

"Power?" I laughed, the sound wild and unhinged even to my own ears. "I don't want your power. I don't want anything from you except a phone so I can call a tow truck and get the hell away from this nightmare."

His eyes narrowed. For a moment, something flickered in their depths. Interest, perhaps. Or amusement. It was impossible to tell.

Before he could respond, the door behind us burst open.

Five men flooded into the room, all of them armed, all of them wearing the same calculating expression. The man in front stepped forward, his eyes finding me immediately.

"There she is," he said, his voice smooth as silk and twice as slimy. "Our runaway bride."

Angelo Rosetti. Of course. He had found me.

"Chloe, darling," Angelo said, spreading his arms wide like a performer taking a bow. "I've been looking everywhere for you. You left the party so abruptly. I was worried."

"Go to hell, Angelo."

His smile didn't waver. "Such a spirited little thing. I apologize for the intrusion, Mr. Donovan. This is a private matter. My fiancée and I had a... disagreement. She tends to overreact to everything."

Donovan. The name hit me like a physical blow. Dante Donovan. I had heard the whispers in Angelo's circles, the fear that surrounded that name. The Mafia king. The man who made men like Angelo tremble.

And I had just called him arrogant to his face.

"It seems you've been causing quite a stir, Mrs. Rosetti," Dante said, his voice smooth and dangerous. "Or rather, Ms. Woods. I know exactly who you are. And I know who your fiancé is."

"You know who I am?" I blinked, confused. How could he possibly-

"I make it my business to know everyone who moves in my city. And a beautiful woman running away from a powerful man is always newsworthy." He turned to Angelo, his expression cold. "I wasn't aware you were engaged, Rosetti. Or did you think a marriage to a woman who despises you would somehow legitimize your... business dealings?"

Angelo's smile faltered. "This is a private matter, Donovan. I suggest you stay out of it."

Dante stepped closer to me, his body blocking Angelo's view. "And if I'm not interested in staying out of it?"

"Then you're making a mistake," Angelo said, his voice dropping to a threatening growl. "She's mine. I found her. I have the ring, the contract, everything."

"You have nothing," Dante replied calmly. "She crashed her car into my property. She asked for my help. Under the laws of hospitality, she is under my protection. And you," his eyes went cold, "are trespassing."

The tension in the room was suffocating. Angelo's men shifted uncomfortably, their hands hovering near their weapons. Dante's men mirrored the gesture.

"Name your price," Angelo said through gritted teeth. "Whatever she's worth to you, I'll double it."

Dante laughed. It was a cold, humorless sound. "You can't afford her. Not in a thousand years."

"What do you want, Donovan? Name it."

Dante turned to me, his storm-gray eyes meeting mine. And then he said something that would change my life forever.

"I want a wife."

The room went silent. I could hear my own heartbeat, thunderous in my ears.

"Excuse me?" I managed.

"Marry me," Dante said, his voice flat and businesslike. "Right now. It solves several problems for me, and it solves your immediate problem of being dragged back to a man you clearly despise. You get my name, my protection, and a life free from Rosetti. I get a wife without the inconvenience of courtship."

"This is insane," I breathed.

"Probably," he agreed. "But it's also the only way you're leaving this room alive and in one piece. Rosetti doesn't take rejection well, and I have no intention of letting him drag you out of my house. So. Marry me, or face the consequences."

Angelo's face was a mask of barely suppressed rage. "You can't be serious. She's my-"

"Was yours," Dante corrected. "And now she's mine. Unless she refuses."

Every eye in the room turned to me. I was soaking wet, bleeding, wearing a ruined wedding dress, and the most powerful man in the city had just proposed in the most psychotic way imaginable.

I should say no. I should run. I should find another way out of this nightmare.

But when I looked at Angelo, I saw the promise of violence in his eyes. I knew what he would do to me if I went back with him. I knew the life that awaited me.

And when I looked at Dante, I saw a man who was terrifying, yes. Intimidating, yes. But also... strangely honorable, in his own twisted way.

"I will make your life a living hell," I warned him.

His lips curved into the ghost of a smile. "I'd expect nothing less."

"Fine," I said, my voice steady despite the chaos inside me. "I'll marry you."

Angelo lunged forward, but Dante's men were faster. They formed a wall between us, their weapons drawn.

"The wedding will take place tonight," Dante announced. "You're welcome to stay, Rosetti, but I wouldn't recommend it. My hospitality has its limits."

Angelo's eyes burned with fury. "This isn't over, Donovan. She's marked. You've made an enemy of me, and I don't forget. Neither will my associates."

"Get out," Dante said, his voice dropping to a whisper that was somehow more terrifying than a shout. "Before I change my mind and decide that permanent silence is preferable."

Angelo's men pulled him back, dragging him toward the door. But before he left, Angelo met my eyes one last time.

"You'll regret this," he said. "When he's done with you, when he's used you and thrown you away, you'll come crawling back to me. And I'll be waiting."

I didn't respond. I just watched him go, my heart racing, my hands trembling.

And then I was alone with Dante Donovan.

He turned to me, his expression unreadable. "You made the right choice."

"I made the only choice," I corrected. "There's a difference."

"Indeed there is." He reached out and brushed a strand of wet hair from my face, his touch surprisingly gentle. "You're bleeding. Let me have someone tend to that. Then we have a wedding to prepare for."

"I need to get out of this dress."

"See, we're already agreeing on things." His eyes glinted with dark humor. "I'll have my staff find something appropriate. Although, I must admit, the wedding dress has a certain... dramatic flair."

"You're insane," I told him. "Absolutely certifiably insane."

"Perhaps." He stepped closer, his body heat seeping through my wet dress. "But I'm also your only way out. Remember that."

I looked up at him, this impossible man who had just turned my life upside down. And despite everything, despite the fear and the chaos and the complete insanity of the situation, I felt something flicker in my chest.

Curiosity. Dangerous, reckless curiosity.

"Fine," I said again. "But you should know something about me."

"And what's that?"

I smiled, the expression not quite reaching my eyes. "I don't follow orders. I don't bow to anyone. And if you think you can control me, you're in for a very unpleasant surprise."

Dante's eyes darkened with interest. "Is that a challenge?"

"It's a promise."

"Good." His hand cupped my chin, tilting my face up to meet his gaze. "I was beginning to think you'd be boring. It's been a long time since anyone promised me anything interesting."

And then he kissed me.

It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was demanding and possessive, a claiming, a warning, a promise all wrapped in one. His lips were warm against mine, and for one dizzying moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Then he pulled back, his eyes burning with something I couldn't quite identify.

"Welcome to the family, Mrs. Donovan," he said softly. "Try not to die. I'd hate to have gone through all this trouble for nothing."

And with that, he turned and walked out of the room, leaving me standing there in my ruined wedding dress, my lips tingling, my heart racing, my life irrevocably changed.

I had just married the Mafia king.

And somehow, I had a feeling this was only the beginning.

The safehouse was a small, nondescript building on the outskirts of the city, hidden behind a facade of legitimate businesses and layers of security that would make a fortress jealous. Dante led me inside, his hand never leaving my back, his eyes constantly scanning for threats.Marcus was waiting for us, his face grim. "We lost two men in the firefight," he said quietly. "Rosetti's people were waiting for us. Someone tipped them off.""Victor," Dante said, the name coming out like a curse. "He knows we have the evidence. He's going to move fast.""We need to move faster."Dante nodded, then turned to me. "You should rest. There's a room in the back. I'll come get you when we have a plan.""I'm not leaving you.""Chloe-""I said I'm not leaving you." I crossed my arms, meeting his gaze with a stubbornness that matched his own. "This is my fight too. My father died trying to expose these people. I'm not going to sit in a back room while you risk your life to finish what he started."Da

  • The Mafia King’s Accidental Wife   The Box and The Betrayal

Dante's men moved like shadows, clearing the path ahead as we descended into the underground garage. I was still wearing the emerald dress, hardly appropriate for a midnight break-in, but there was no time to change. Dante had transformed in the minutes since reading my father's letters. The cold control was still there, but beneath it, something dangerous was burning."Stay close to me," he said, his hand finding the small of my back. "If anything happens, you run. You don't look back. You don't try to be a hero.""I'm not the hero type.""You pushed me out of the way of a bullet.""That was instinct. I regret it already."His lips twitched, but the humor didn't reach his eyes. We climbed into a black SUV, and the convoy pulled out of the estate, speeding through the rain-soaked night toward the city. I gave Dante the address of my old apartment, a tiny place in a mediocre neighborhood that I had shared with a roommate before Angelo swept into my life and insisted I move somewhere mo

I pulled away from Dante's touch, my chair scraping against the marble floor as I stood. My heart was a war drum in my chest, and my hands were shaking, but I refused to let him see how deeply his words had cut me."You married me for revenge," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "You planned to use me as a weapon against people I don't even know. And now you're telling me you've changed your mind because I kissed you back?"Dante's expression was unreadable. "I'm telling you the truth. What you do with it is your choice.""My choice." I laughed, the sound hollow and bitter. "I don't have choices, remember? I'm married to the most powerful man in the country. I'm trapped in his fortress with armed guards at every exit. My father was apparently a traitor who got your family killed. And the man I was supposed to marry wants me dead or worse."I stepped closer to him, tilting my head up to meet his gaze. "So tell me, Dante. What choices do I actually have?"He was quiet for a long mom

The door clicked shut behind Dante, and I stood there for a long moment, my lips still tingling from his kiss. My heart was hammering against my ribs like a caged animal, and I couldn't tell if it was fear or fury or something far more dangerous.Probably all three.I looked down at my ruined dress, the white silk now stained with rain and blood and the chaos of the past hour. My engagement to Angelo had been a prison. My marriage to Dante was a different kind of cage entirely, one wrapped in marble and crystal and the promise of violence. But at least this cage had better lighting.I needed to move. To think. To figure out what the hell I had just agreed to. I walked toward the door, my bare feet leaving wet prints on the polished floor, and pulled it open.A man stood in the hallway, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression carefully neutral. He was younger than Dante, maybe late twenties, with sandy brown hair and intelligent blue eyes that assessed me with quiet curiosity.
