The Marchetti estate was a monument to old money and older violence.

Marble floors stretched in every direction, polished to a mirror shine. Crystal chandeliers hung from ceilings painted with frescoes depicting scenes of war and conquest. Men in dark suits lined the walls like statues, their eyes tracking our every move, their hands never far from the weapons hidden beneath their jackets.

Dante walked beside me, his hand resting on the small of my back, a possessive gesture that was both protective and claiming. His wound was still healing, but he moved with the same predatory grace, his gray eyes scanning the room, cataloging exits and threats.

"Remember what I told you," he murmured, his lips barely moving. "Let me do the talking."

"I remember."

"Good."

We were led into a study that could have housed a small army. Bookshelves lined the walls, filled with leather-bound volumes that looked centuries old. A massive desk dominated the center of the room, and behind it sat Lorenzo Marchetti.

He was smaller than I expected. Frail, even, with silver hair and paper-thin skin stretched over sharp bones. But his eyes were anything but weak. They were cold, calculating, and utterly without mercy.

"Dante Donovan," Lorenzo said, his voice raspy with age but sharp as a blade. "I heard you got married. I didn't believe it."

"It's true." Dante stopped a few feet from the desk, his posture relaxed but his eyes watchful. "This is my wife, Chloe."

Lorenzo's gaze slid to me, dismissive and bored. "Take her to the east wing. We have business to discuss."

Two of his men stepped forward, reaching for my arms. I jerked back, my eyes flashing.

"Touch me and I'll break your fingers," I said sweetly.

The men hesitated, glancing at Lorenzo. He raised an eyebrow, a flicker of interest crossing his weathered face.

"Feisty," he said. "But this is a conversation for men. You'll be more comfortable elsewhere."

"I'm sure I would be," I replied, my voice dripping with false politeness. "But I didn't marry Dante to sit in a pretty room while the men talk business. I'm here because I choose to be, not because I need your permission."

Lorenzo's eyes narrowed. "You've got a sharp tongue, girl. That'll get you killed in this world."

"Only if I'm stupid enough to be caught alone with the wrong person. I'm not."

Dante's hand tightened on my back, a warning. But I didn't look at him. I kept my eyes on Lorenzo, refusing to back down.

The old man stared at me for a long moment. Then, slowly, a smile spread across his thin lips.

"I like her," he said to Dante. "She's got fire. You'd better hold onto this one."

"I intend to."

Lorenzo gestured to a chair. "Fine. She stays. But if she interrupts, she leaves. Understood?"

I nodded, taking the seat. Dante sat beside me, his body angled toward mine, a barrier between me and the old man.

"Now," Lorenzo said, leaning back in his chair. "Tell me why you're here. And make it worth my time."

Dante didn't waste words. He laid out the evidence, the betrayal, the truth about Isabella and Victor and the Council. He told Lorenzo everything, holding nothing back.

When he finished, Lorenzo was silent for a long moment. Then he laughed, a dry, humorless sound.

"I've been waiting twenty years for someone to bring me proof of what Isabella did to my son," he said. "And now you walk in here with a flash drive and a pretty wife and expect me to help you?"

"I expect you to want revenge as much as I do," Dante replied calmly. "Isabella killed your son. She's been laughing at you for two decades. This is your chance to make her pay."

Lorenzo's eyes glittered. "What do you want from me?"

"Your resources. Your intelligence network. Your soldiers. In exchange, you get a front-row seat to Isabella's destruction."

"And after? What happens when she's gone?"

"Then we go our separate ways. No debts, no obligations."

Lorenzo was quiet, considering. Then his gaze shifted to me. "I want her."

My blood ran cold. Dante's body went rigid beside me.

"What?"

"She stays here," Lorenzo said. "As collateral. Insurance that you'll keep your end of the bargain. If you betray me, I kill her. Simple."

"No." Dante's voice was ice. "Absolutely not."

"Then we have no deal."

The room was silent. I could feel the weight of every eye on us, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.

"Give us a moment," I said.

Lorenzo raised an eyebrow but nodded. He gestured to his men, and they stepped back, giving us a semblance of privacy.

I turned to Dante, my voice low. "I'll do it."

"No."

"Dante-"

"I said no." His eyes were blazing, his jaw tight. "I'm not leaving you here with him. He'll kill you the moment it suits him."

"He won't. He needs the evidence more than he needs revenge on you. And if I stay, it proves we're serious. It buys us time."

"I don't care about time. I care about you."

"I know." I reached up and cupped his face, forcing him to look at me. "But this is the only way. You know it. Lorenzo won't help us otherwise. And without him, we don't stand a chance against Isabella."

Dante closed his eyes, his breath coming in ragged bursts. When he opened them again, there was something raw in his gaze, something vulnerable.

"If anything happens to you-"

"It won't. I'll be fine. I've survived worse than an old man with a grudge."

He stared at me for a long moment. Then he leaned in, his lips brushing my ear.

"There's a phone in your pocket. Hidden. Untraceable. If anything goes wrong, you call me. I'll burn this place to the ground to get you back."

"I know."

He pulled back, his expression hardening. Then he turned to Lorenzo.

"Fine. She stays. But if she's harmed in any way, if she's so much as looked at wrong, I will kill everyone in this house. Including you."

Lorenzo smiled, cold and satisfied. "I'd expect nothing less."

The deal was struck. Dante kissed me, hard and desperate, then walked out of the room without looking back.

I watched him go, my heart pounding. Then I turned to Lorenzo, my expression carefully neutral.

"Looks like we're roommates," I said. "Try not to be a terrible host."

Lorenzo laughed, a genuine sound. "I have a feeling you're going to be very entertaining."

The door closed behind Dante, and I was alone in the lion's den.

The rendezvous point was a deserted parking garage on the edge of the city.Dante parked the car on the top level, the concrete walls echoing with the sound of our arrival. The place was empty, shadows pooling in the corners, the only light coming from a few flickering fluorescent bulbs."I don't like this," I said."Neither do I." Dante killed the engine but didn't move. "Stay in the car.""Like hell I will.""Chloe-""I'm not letting you walk into a potential trap alone." I unbuckled my seatbelt and turned to face him. "If Marcus is telling the truth, we both need to hear what he has to say. If he's lying, you'll need backup."Dante stared at me for a long moment, his jaw tight. Then he sighed, a sound of reluctant acceptance."Fine. But you stay behind me. If anything goes wrong, you run. No arguments.""No promises."He muttered something under his breath that sounded like a curse, then got out of the car. I followed, my senses on high alert, every shadow a potential threat.Marcu

The explosion threw me off my feet.I hit the concrete hard, my head snapping back, stars exploding across my vision. Dust and debris rained down around me, and for a moment, I couldn't hear anything but a high-pitched ringing in my ears. Then the shooting started.I rolled onto my stomach, coughing, trying to orient myself. The warehouse was chaos. Smoke billowed from the hole in the wall, and through it, I could see figures moving. Dante's men, their weapons flashing in the darkness.Isabella was screaming orders, her composure finally shattered. Her men returned fire, but they were outnumbered, outflanked, outmaneuvered.I needed to move.I crawled toward the nearest cover, a overturned table, and pressed my back against it. My head was pounding, my vision blurry, but I forced myself to focus. I had to find Dante. I had to get out of here.A hand grabbed my arm, and I swung blindly, my fist connecting with something solid."Easy, tiger."Dante.He was crouched beside me, his face s

Lorenzo's hands were shaking.I watched as he stared at the photograph of his granddaughter, his face a mask of barely controlled fury. The little girl couldn't have been more than eight, with dark hair and wide, terrified eyes. She looked so small. So fragile."We need to move," he repeated, his voice cracking. "Now.""Wait." I held up my hand, my mind racing. "If we go in blind, Isabella will kill her. She's expecting us to react emotionally. We need to be smarter."Lorenzo's eyes blazed. "That is my granddaughter. My blood. I will not sit here while-""And I'm not suggesting you do." I stepped closer, meeting his gaze without flinching. "But we need a plan. A real one. Not a suicide mission."Sofia appeared at my side, her expression grim. "She's right, Grandfather. Isabella wants you to react. She wants you to make a mistake."Lorenzo's jaw tightened, but he nodded. "Fine. What do you propose?"I thought fast, pulling together everything I knew about Isabella, about the Council, a

  • The Mafia King’s Accidental Wife   The Games Begin

The phone felt like a live grenade in my pocket.I stood in the shadows of the Marchetti estate, watching Dante's car disappear down the long driveway. He had kissed me goodbye, quick and fierce, then promised to return within three days. Three days of pretending to be a guest while actually being a hostage. Three days of navigating Lorenzo's games while keeping my secrets close.Three days of hoping Isabella didn't decide to kill me before he came back.Sofia appeared beside me, her expression thoughtful. "You love him.""I barely know him.""That's not what I asked."I turned to face her, crossing my arms. "What do you want, Sofia?""To help you." She gestured toward the estate. "Come. There's something you need to see."She led me through winding corridors, past guards who nodded at her with respect, past servants who kept their eyes down. The estate was a labyrinth, full of hidden rooms and secret passages. Sofia navigated it like she had been born here, which she had.We stopped

The door clicked shut behind Dante, and I felt the sound in my bones.Lorenzo watched me with amusement, his thin lips curved into a smile that made my skin crawl. He gestured to one of his men, a hulking figure with a scarred face and dead eyes."Take Mrs. Donovan to the east wing. Make sure she's comfortable."The man, who I mentally named Scarface, grunted and motioned for me to follow. I didn't move."I want to see the gardens first," I said.Lorenzo raised an eyebrow. "The gardens?""I've heard they're beautiful. And I've been stuck in a car for hours. I need air."Scarface looked at Lorenzo, who shrugged. "Fine. Show her the gardens. But don't let her out of your sight."The gardens were magnificent. Rows of roses in every color imaginable, ancient olive trees twisted by time, marble fountains that sparkled in the morning light. It was the kind of place that belonged in a painting, not in the backyard of a crime lord.I walked slowly, my eyes cataloging everything. Exits. Securi
