Matteo's POV

I sat in the darkness of my car, parked three blocks away from the industrial site, and waited.

"Pull all teams back to secondary positions," I ordered through the radio. "Silent running."

"Boss, they might not come back," Caleb's voice crackled through. "They've already eliminated their liability. They might just leave the body."

"They'll come." I was certain of it. "They'll want to retrieve their sniper, get rid of any evidence that could link back to them. They'll come. We just have to wait."

And wait we did.

Hours passed. The night grew deeper, colder. I watched the monitors in my car, tracking the thermal signatures of my men positioned around the perimeter, watching the static image of Dave's body lying motionless on the ground.

One hour became two. Two became four.

Some of my men grew restless, shifting in their positions, questioning whether we were wasting time.

But I remained still, patient. Hunting required patience. And I was hunting now.

Six hours in, Cale

  • The Mafia King’s Bride; He’s danger. She’s revenge    Chapter 51

Isabella's POV The gasp had escaped before I could stop it, and in the sudden silence that followed, I knew they had heard me.My heart hammered against my ribs as I stood frozen outside the door, my mind racing through possibilities. Run? Pretend I had just arrived? Admit I had been listening?Inside the study, I heard movement. Then Matteo's voice, cautious. "Father, I'm going to check on Isabella to make sure she's settled.""Go ahead. I'm done with this tonight anyway." The don's voice sounded exhausted. "Too many families to call, too many apologies to make for the interruption those bloody gunmen caused at what should have been a celebration.""I know. I'm sorry this happened.""Not your fault. But we'll need to do damage control. The other families will be watching to see how we handle this, whether we show strength or weakness in response.""I understand. Take some rest. We'll reconvene tomorrow to plan our next steps.""Agreed. And Matteo? Be careful with the questioning. Th

  • The Mafia King’s Bride; He’s danger. She’s revenge    Chapter 50

Isabella's POV The moment I saw Matteo round the pillar, I could see the worry etched across his face. His eyes were wide, scanning me frantically for injuries, for signs of harm. The fear in his expression was raw, unguarded in a way I rarely saw from him.I rushed towards him immediately, needing to show him I was alright, that whatever he had been imagining hadn't come to pass."I'm fine," I assured him, reaching for his arm. "Matteo, I'm okay. I am not hurt."His hands came up to frame my face, his thumbs brushing across my cheekbones as he examined me closely. "You're sure? They didn't—""I'm sure. Just a bit rattled, but physically fine."Relief flooded his features, but it was quickly replaced by something harder. His eyes moved past me to where Vincenzo stood, still catching his breath from whatever had happened whilst I'd been fighting off the attacker.Vincenzo had that mysterious smirk on his face again, the one that suggested he knew something no one else did. The one

Matteo POV I watched Vincenzo cross the ballroom, his eyes still fixed on Isabella with that same calculated interest. Every muscle in my body tensed, the anger from our earlier confrontation mixing with a new surge of possessive fury.He had been alone with her. The timing was too perfect to be coincidence, Isabella disappearing, then reappearing moments before Vincenzo emerged from the same corridor. They had spoken, possibly more than spoken. What had he said to her? What had he tried?I pulled Isabella closer to my side, my hand tightening on her waist. She was mere breaths away from me now, close enough that I could smell her perfume, could feel the warmth of her body against mine. Safe. She was safe."Matteo?" Isabella's voice held concern. "Are you alright?""I'm fine. I just—"GBAH!!The gunshot cut through the music and conversation like a blade. For a split second, the entire ballroom froze. Then chaos erupted.More shots rang out, the sharp cracks echoing off the walls.

  • The Mafia King’s Bride; He’s danger. She’s revenge    Chapter 48

Matteo's POV My father left me standing in the middle of the ballroom, surrounded by curious stares and whispered conversations. The confrontation with Vincenzo had drawn too much attention, had exposed tensions I should have kept hidden. But I couldn't bring myself to regret it. Not when he had been looking at Isabella like that, speaking about her with such casual disrespect.I grabbed a drink from a passing waiter, downing half of it in one swallow. The alcohol burned going down, but it helped clear some of the rage still clouding my thoughts. I needed to find Isabella, needed to make sure she was alright, needed to explain what had happened and why.But she was nowhere to be seen. I scanned the ballroom, the dance floor, the groups clustered near the bar. No emerald green dress. No familiar face turning to look for me.Why had she not returned from the bathroom?I was about to go searching when someone appeared directly in front of me, blocking my view of the rest of the roo

Isabella's POV I stared at Vincenzo for what felt like forever, my mind racing through possibilities. Had he heard my conversation with Aunt Carla? Had he seen her slip away? Was that why he was here, catching me alone in this corridor? But as I studied his expression, searching for any sign that he knew what had just transpired, I saw only surprise. Genuine surprise at finding me here, away from the party, standing in this empty hallway like I'd lost my way.He didn't know. He hadn't heard anything. The relief that flooded through me was almost dizzying."What are you doing out here all alone?" he repeated, moving closer.I forced my expression into something casual, unbothered. "What does it look like? I'm in the bathroom corridor. What else would I be doing?"His smirk widened. "Any number of things, actually. Maybe you left the party to please yourself somewhere private. Or maybe you got bored with all the congratulations and needed some fresh air. Or—" He let the sentence hang,

  • The Mafia King’s Bride; He’s danger. She’s revenge    Chapter 46

Isabella's POV We stood facing each other in the quiet corridor, the sounds of the party muted by distance and closed doors. My aunt looked exactly as she had at the café, disguised so well that anyone passing by would see nothing more than a member of the catering staff taking a brief break. But I saw her. I saw the woman who had raised me, who had shaped my entire understanding of the world, who had apparently been lying to me for years. And I saw the gun, still tucked beneath the cloth on her tray."What are you doing here?" The question came out harsher than I intended, but I was beyond caring about tone."I came to see my niece get engaged." Her voice was pleasant, conversational, as though this were a normal family gathering. "It's quite the event. Your Matteo certainly knows how to throw a party.""Don't." I stepped closer, keeping my voice low. "Don't stand there and pretend this is a social call. You have a gun. You're in disguise. What are you really doing here?""Exactly
