The police station smelled like stale coffee and fluorescent lights and the kind of tired desperation that came from people who had seen too much and could not unsee it. I sat in a metal chair in a small room with gray walls and a table bolted to the floor and waited for someone to come back and ask me more questions that I did not want to answer.

My hands were clean now because they had made me wash them when we got here but I could still feel the narrator's blood under my fingernails and in the creases of my palms. I had scrubbed until the skin was raw but the feeling would not go away and I did not think it ever would.

The door opened and a detective walked in carrying a folder and a coffee cup that looked like it had been refilled too many times. She was older than me by maybe twenty years and had the kind of face that made you think she had heard every lie you could possibly tell her and a few you had not thought of yet.
