I sat on the edge of the motel bed with my hands pressed against my knees and tried to remember how to breathe like a normal person instead of someone whose body had been ripped apart and put back together wrong.

The suppressant bottle was empty on the nightstand and I had taken the last pill three hours ago but I could already feel it wearing off and the heat starting to build again under my skin.

This was the third time in two weeks and each time it got worse and each time I could feel Thorne pulling at something inside me that I could not name or control or make stop no matter how hard I tried.

I closed my eyes and the memories hit me like they always did when I was too tired to keep them out.

The night of the party and the way Kai had handed me that drink with the pill dissolved in it and told me it would ruin Thorne's reputation and make him look weak in front of the council.
