They let me go six hours later with instructions not to leave town and a court date scheduled for two weeks out. My lawyer drove me home because my car was still at the lab and I did not want to go back there and I did not want to be alone with my thoughts

"Get some sleep," he said when we pulled up outside my apartment building. "And do not talk to anyone about this case and especially do not talk to Kai or anyone associated with him."

I promised I would not and then I got out and walked up to my apartment and unlocked the door and stepped inside and immediately knew something was wrong.

The air felt different and there was a smell I could not quite place and when I turned on the lights I saw that someone had been inside while I was gone.

Nothing was obviously missing or destroyed but things were slightly out of place in a way that made my skin crawl.

Books were pushed back on the shelf at different angles and the papers on my desk were not in the same order I had left them
