I have spent days adjusting to my new life at Shade Manor. Pyotr has been busy preparing to send the other humans back. So we've seen very little of each other, though he makes the effort to escort me to breakfast every morning. I would like to see more of Pyotr, but he is just so busy. I jolt when someone taps me on the shoulder. Turning to look behind me, my eyes meet Alexei's. He arches a brow while staring me down and I see his left ear twitch. "What has you so lost in thought?" He asks. "O-Oh, I was just t-thinking of Lord Pyotr. H...He's been quite busy lately hasn't h-he," I comment. Alexei rolls his eyes, moving his hand from my shoulder to fold his arms. "You want to know who else is quite busy...me. Now get back to work before I send you out of my ward. You are not much help sitting there spacing out," Alexei barks. I flinch at his harsh tone. Adverting my gaze I stare down at the bandages in front of me. "Sorry, I...I'll get back t
A frosty chill blows over my body causing me to shiver. The cool air is filled with the sound of chattering people as we prepare to leave the Shadow Moore. I jump when I feel something touch my shoulder. Looking behind me I see Pyotr. His dark hair is tied neatly into a low ponytail. He's wearing a white tunic with a red vest tucked into black pants. Pyotr smiles at me, the moonlight glinting off his orange eyes makes them glow. "Are you ready, this will be the last time you can see your family for a while," he asks. I smile casting my eyes down. "I...I left once, I'm n-not afraid to d-do it again," I reply. Pyotr furrows his brows in confusion. "Do you count your kidnapping as leaving?" He questions. Lifting my gaze from the ground, I glance back up at Pyotr. "No, I-I don't count that. I l...left home shortly before I was t-taken," I tell him. "Well, hopefully, you can find some closure after your trip back home," he says. I sm
Warm sunlight leaks in through the carriage window. I breathe in the light crisp air as I open my eyes. I blink several times trying to adjust to the unexpected light. "I see you are finally awake," I hear Alina say across from me. Sitting up I stretch my arms before glancing over at her. Alina sits tall and straight in her seat eyes fixed forward. "H-How long was I asleep?" I ask. "For a couple of hours. While you were out we passed through the Shadow Moore boundaries and will soon be in Samirya," she informs me. "I see, have t-the drivers taken any breaks during this t...time?" I ask. "You mean the coachman? They have not rested yet, it is imperative that we keep on track," she tells me. I nod, but before I can reply Alina speaks again. "Actually you are right, we are going to need a break to change forms," she says thoughtfully. I blink at her questioningly, tilting my head slightly. "Change forms?" I ask. "Yes, we shades
I close my eyes while a sigh slips past my lips. Wiping my sweaty palms on my dress I stand up, my legs trembling. Alina stares at me a moment before standing up. "Are you alright?" She asks softly. Scrunching my hands in the skirt of my dress I cast my eyes down. "I'm j-just nervous is a...all," I tell her. "What do you have to be so nervous about?" She wonders. "My mother is r-rather intimidating and w-well we argued the l...last time we saw each other," I explain. "She should be rather happy to see you then, should she not?" She raises a brow at me. As Alina talks she opens the carriage door stepping out and I follow her. "I should h-hope so," I respond to her. I take in my surroundings watching as more people pour out from the parked carriages. They are all smiling, clearly relieved to be home. Though the only thing running through my mind is how my mother is sure to react. I ran away before she could sell me off. She's going
I bite my lip casting my eyes down, Alina steps to the side glancing at me. Slowly I shift my gaze towards her offering a stiff smile before looking back at Mother. Mother's brown eyes scrutinize me and I feel myself shrinking back. I inhale deeply taking a step towards her. "I will b-be staying with the l...lord who saved my life from now on," I tell her. Mother's face strains before she lets out a choked laugh. "Clara I can imagine what a lord would want with you. And my dear you are better off with me and the arrangements I have made." My face burns red at her words as I take a step back. Wiping my wet palms on my skirt I take in a breath. "I-I am not bedding the lord," I squeak in bewilderment. I side-eye Alina and watch as her body stiffens. She covers her face with her hand attempting to hold back her laughter. I look back at Mother who stares at me with a raised brow. "If you are not bedding the lord now the time will come. Girls like yo
My teeth clench, the rancid cloth forcing its way down my throat. I take sharp breaths in through my nose as tears slide down my cheeks. I clench my fists in hopes of stopping my body from trembling. The cellar only becomes colder as the days go by. Darkness envelopes my entire being, making the cold room feel like an endless vortex. My ears are filled with the soft cries of the others trapped here. Their wailing voices make my skull pound. I shift my achy body so I'm sitting straighter causing the gravel floor to scrape across my flesh. Moaning at the sudden pain, I squeeze my eyes shut. I can't take this anymore. I must leave. Sitting up, I lean against the wall I feel behind me. I tug at the rope binding my hands. As I struggle to pull my hands free, the rope begins to rub my wrists, eating away at my tender flesh. Blood drips onto my hands but I continue to yank at the ropes. I let in a shaky breath, trying to push the pain away. Tugging like this isn't
Man of shade manor 2 My breath comes out in pants as my mind races with what to say. I close my eyes taking in a couple of deep breaths. "I...I-I'm alright," I whimper. I watch as he wipes the blood off his hand into his clothes. He sighs, running a hand through his long hair. He begins to undo my restraints. His soft fingers lightly caress my wrists as he removes the ropes. Once I'm released I bring my hands to my chest running my fingers over the raw flesh. The man offers me a hand pulling me to my feet. My legs tremble beneath me but the man continues to hold me upright. I glance curiously at my savior. His face is contorted in anger, while he looks around the cellar. "I have taken care of them, my lord," a light female voice sounds from behind the man. He turns around, allowing me to glimpse the woman who spoke. But the creature that greets me is no woman. She is tall, with skin and hair that are as dark as charcoal and has large pointed ears like th
My eyes drift open at the feeling of soft sunlight over my face. I look around the unfamiliar room letting out a deep yawn. Casting my eyes towards the window I see no sunlight but silvery moonlight filling the room instead. That's right I'm in the Shadow Moore where I might never see the sun again. I pull the bed sheets from my body as crisp air brushes my skin. Shivering I pull myself from the bed. Looking around I spot a clean pair of linens on the dresser top. I approach the dresser my fingers inching out toward the clothes. The silky fabric that caresses my fingertips is unfamiliar. Never had such a nice piece of material been allowed to touch my skin. Taking off the nightgown I had previously been given I slip into the clean dress. The gown is a deep red with black lace laying over the skirt. I turn to look into a full-body mirror. My red curls are a tangled mess. Sighing I begin to run my fingers through my hair in an attempt to fix it. My fingers catch the knots
