Chapter 2

Author: Good Night
"No!"

Summer jolted awake from the excruciating pain of being burned alive.

"What's wrong, Summer?"

A familiar face loomed before her.

Rose?

Summer's eyes wavered. Something wasn't quite right. It had been years since she saw Rose looking barefaced and innocent.

She scanned her surroundings quickly and froze. It seemed she had returned to the day before her 18th birthday—six years ago. On that day, Rose took her to a bar to celebrate her birthday.

She stared down at her hands, expecting to see them wrinkled and wounded, only to find them looking fair and smooth.

It dawned on her that she had traveled back to the start of her tragic life.

"I've gotten you a glass of lemonade from the bar. Take some lemonade. You'll feel better." Looking concerned, Rose handed Summer a drink.

Summer stared at the drink as chills traveled down her spine. In her past life, she recalled blacking out after taking that drink.

When she pieced together fragments of her memories, she recounted being dragged to a filthy alley by a group of men, who proceeded to undress her and took many photos of her.

She was too naive and too trusting of Rose at that time. Hence, she never thought Rose would spike her drink.

Not only that, but she did not even tell her family that it was Rose who brought her to the bar on that fateful night after Rose pleaded with her to keep it a secret.

Memories from the last six years flashed across Summer's mind. The nude photos of her from that night in the alley were leaked on the day of her coming-of-age ceremony. Anyone could find those photos via a quick search online.

As such, rumors of Summer being gang-raped spread like wildfire across the city, and no one believed that she was still unsullied.

Following that, she lost her parents in a deadly car crash, where their bodies were badly mangled. Then, she had a fallout with Henry over her decision to marry Anthony.

Finally, she was sent away to a mental institution, where she was subjected to unspeakable torture every day.

At the end of her life, she remembered her dying, the despairing Henry in the hospital, and the fire that took their lives. Her chest tightened in resentment. She vowed not to repeat her mistakes now that she was blessed with a second chance.

"Rose, I'm feeling a little cold. Could you grab me a shawl?" Summer requested.

"Sure!" A hint of annoyance flashed across Rose's eyes. She set down the drink and looked for the shawl for her.

Summer lowered her gaze with a smirk on her lips. Before Anthony tricked her into signing the stock transfer agreement, Rose had always fulfilled all her requests.

With a poker face, she swapped her drink with Rose's.

A while later, Rose returned with the shawl, which she gently and carefully draped across Summer's shoulders. At present, she looked nothing like the depraved woman who tortured Summer at the mental institution.

"Rose, I am grateful to you for always being so nice to me and taking care of me." Summer raised her glass with an innocent smile. "Let's make a toast with our non-alcoholic drinks! Cheers!"

Rose, anxious to see Summer chug the spiked drink, enthusiastically raised her glass and clicked it against Summer's. She snickered inwardly, thinking Summer was a fool for even suggesting to toast.

On the surface, she said to Summer, "I'll always treat you well, Summer. We are sisters forever!"

With that, she downed the contents in her glass.

Summer watched on and slowly finished her own drink.

Rose's eyes sparkled with excitement and glee. She mistakenly thought her evil plan had succeeded.

It was that moment that Summer suddenly smiled at Rose. Her smile looked rather haunting and eerie under the illumination of the dazzling lights in the bar.

Taken aback, Rose did a double take, but Summer had returned to her annoyingly naive and innocent self.

In the downpour, a few men dragged Rose into the filthy alley behind the bar. She was motionless and limp.

Summer watched from afar in her cap. In her past life, those men had been hired by Rose to drag her into the same alley where they took the appalling photos of her.

To win Summer's trust, Rose did not instruct the men to sully Summer. All they did was take photos of her. When the whole world believed Summer was sexually assaulted, only Rose "stood by her side".

Summer nearly retched when she thought back on how touched she was by Rose's "support".

Back in the present, she handed one of the greasy men a note. She stated, "I've changed my mind. Do whatever you want to her, as long as you don't kill her. By the way, I don't want photos. Take videos instead and send them to this email address."

After what Rose had inflicted on her, she wouldn't be satisfied with getting even. She wanted Rose to suffer a worse fate than her!

"Don't worry! We have some pretty potent drug here, and we promise we'll keep her alive." The disgusting man immediately perked up when he was told to do whatever he wanted to Rose.

Summer walked away without another word as the men's lewd conversation continued behind her.

The neon lights from afar cast a long shadow behind her. She glanced at her shadow and realized it was shaped like a devil. But that did not bother her, as she was indeed a vengeful spirit from hell.

This was just the beginning.

Right as Summer was about to step out of the alley, a pair of hands reached out for her. Before she knew it, the man had pulled her into darkness and dragged her into a narrow space between two buildings—the buildings on the bar street were built very closely next to each other.

Pressing Summer against the textured surface of the wall, the man covered her mouth. "Shh!"

Their bodies almost pressed against each other in the narrow space.

In the confusion, she soon heard some footsteps passing by outside. The man shot a sharp, predatory glare at the commotion outside.

In that split second, a ray of light flashed through the space between the buildings and illuminated his face.

Summer had seen that charming face once in her past life. He was Mason.

Although she disliked Mason at that time, she was in awe of his good looks.

"If there's a misunderstanding, I'll take responsibility," Mason said calmly. It was obvious his relationship with Henry had improved a lot."You wish! Do you think you'd be that lucky? Dream on!" Henry snorted.Summer lowered her gaze, and her lips twitched as she tried to hide a smile.Luke was incredulous. That clueless old Henry! Summer and Mason were hugging right in front of him. Why wouldn't he realize it?"I'll hold these for you." Mason reached out and took the flowers from Summer's arms."Grandpa, I'm going to change and take off my makeup. I'll be back in a bit," Summer said."Go on, then. I've booked a restaurant. We'll all go out and have a wrap party together later!" Henry replied cheerfully."Okay." Summer nodded and happily went to get changed.Once she left, Henry looked around. "Those men over there, are they Summer's bodyguards?"Luke glanced over. "Yes, they are."Henry frowned. "Why are there so many bodyguards? Did something happen recently?"How wou

Before she knew it, the filming was almost wrapped up.That same day, Emma returned. "I was there on the first day, so naturally, I have to be here on your last day, too."Summer hugged her. "You've been through so much.Emma patted her on the back. "I actually earned quite a few bonuses this time. I even have enough for the down payment on a small apartment now. It was a blessing in disguise."Summer laughed. "Alright, then. When you start renovating, I'll gift you a full set of custom furniture."Emme immediately let go of her, pulled out her phone, and turned on the recording app. "Say that again. I need evidence."Summer laughed brightly and grabbed the phone. "I, Summer Hartford, solemnly promise that when Ms. Dennings starts her renovations, I'll send her a full house of custom furniture, home appliances, and a giant bonus!""Why are you secretly adding more to the deal?" Emma took back her phone gleefully. "By the way, what happened to that bastard Suzanne?" she asked.S

Summer replied, "I told you last time. They like me because I'm pretty. Isn't that enough?"Violet immediately laughed.Summer could tell Violet didn't harbor any malice toward her now, but so what? She turned to leave when Violet called out to her, "The real boss behind Eridanus is you, isn't it?"Summer froze and looked back at Violet."Saul told me," Violet said bluntly, throwing Saul under the bus without any hesitation.Summer frowned. Saul…"Don't be so tense. I'm not going to tell anyone. He only mentioned it because I'm out of work and he's worried I'll starve. He suggested I come to you for an interview," Violet said."You want to work at Eridanus?" Summer asked.Violet nodded. "Yes, I heard from Saul that Eridanus doesn't even have a PR department. If you're trying to become a big studio, how can you not have PR?""You're thinking of doing PR at Eridanus? With your skills, the major conglomerates would all be fighting over you. Why would you come to my little operat

Mason shook his head. "Burn scars can come from all kinds of things. If she could recite so many details to you, there's no way she wouldn't think about whether she left behind any evidence. Even if she wasn't sure, she wouldn't just confess without putting up any resistance."Kyle frowned. "So you're saying she's faking it?""It's not her faking it that's terrifying. What's terrifying is the fact that she knows so many details despite faking it," Mason said.Kyle looked even more bewildered. "Do you mean Ms. Turner is lying to us?"Mason didn't answer. Was it as simple as Cynthia lying to them? But how did she know all those details? If that woman really was a fake, then there was only one possible explanation.Cynthia had actually remembered who the real culprit was, but she chose to side with the killer. She brought in that woman, fed her all the correct details, and had her act as a scapegoat.Someone was trying to use Cynthia's hand to close the book on the disaster from 1

Mason could never forget the chaos on the scene that day and the roaring flames that shot up into the sky."Drag her out," Mason said coldly.Kyle immediately ordered his men to remove the woman from the premises. She furiously cursed at Mason as they dragged her away, but Kyle quickly had someone gag her again.Once the woman was gone, Mason turned his gaze to Cynthia.Cynthia still looked terrified. "Mason, she's the one who killed my sister. You can't let her go!"She stared at him blankly.Mason said slowly, "You know, we've gone over this case countless times over the years. I've studied every shred of evidence and every minute detail and haven't found the slightest clue. And now, this mistress of a nearly bankrupt liquor company's owner was somehow able to pull all that off?"Cynthia lowered her gaze. "Kyle interrogated her thoroughly. He said all the details lined up, so we probably didn't get the wrong person. And I'm certain that blurry face I saw in my memories was her

Summer said seriously, "Mason, once I graduate, I'll take the initiative to talk to Grandpa. We'll shoulder this together. Don't worry. Ever since I was little, Grandpa would always give me whatever I wanted. That includes you.""Alright, then. I'll rely on you to cover me, Ms. Hartford," Mason said with a smile."Don't worry. I've got you covered," Summer chimed in playfully."If you're tired, get some sleep. You don't have to stay on the phone with me," Mason said gently when he heard the drowsiness in her voice."Okay," Summer responded."Good night, sweetheart," Mason said."Good night, dear," Summer replied.Mason chuckled faintly before ending the call. Then, he let out a long sigh, his expression darkening as he turned around.Cynthia sat on the couch, and Kyle was right beside her.On the floor lay a woman bound tightly with rope."Continue." Mason set his phone aside, dragged a chair over, and sat down. "Who is this woman?"Cynthia was shaking all over. "It's her! I
