(Peyton)

The door clicks shut behind Cormac, and orange peel and cardamom fill the office.

He stops when he sees me in his chair. A muscle jumps in his jaw, but he doesn't tell me to move.

He stands at the edge of the desk and looks down at me instead.

"After the pup is born, we'll divorce."

He uses the same tone on warriors who fail training.

An hour ago that would've gutted me. Now I just shrug.

"Why wait? I'm ready today."

He pauses. It only lasts a second, but I catch it. He expected tears, maybe begging. He didn't expect me to be in a hurry.

"No." The Alpha comes into his voice. "After the birth."

A pregnant wife at his side until the heir arrives must look better to the Elders. Let him have his few weeks. They won't fix anything.

"Fine. Have it your way. I really don't care."

His eyes narrow. Then he takes out his phone.

"Bring the car around. My wife is going home."

"I drove here."

"You're not driving in your condition." His eyes drop to my belly. "I won't have the heir put at risk."

Right. The heir.

I don't argue, because my knee agrees with him.

"Wait for me," I tell the driver outside the Alpha's house. "I won't be long."

I left my bags upstairs earlier because I didn't want to drag them past Meredith on one leg. Now I just want to grab them and find a hotel with room service and a very big bathtub.

My bedroom is spotless. The bed is made, and the bags are gone.

Tess is waiting in the hallway with a smug little smile on her thin lips.

"Madam said to put everything back."

So, Meredith thinks I'd run off with clothes bought on Blackpine money.

She's never worked a day in her life. She has no idea what I earned before I came here.

Tess stands there, waiting for me to cry or crawl around hauling suitcases out of closets.

A laugh comes out of me instead, and her smile dies.

"Oh." I tilt my head and give her my sweetest smile. "Maybe she thinks Cormac would like to wear it."

I turn on my good heel and walk out.

Let them keep the clothes. I'll buy new ones.

"Change of plan," I tell the driver. "Take me to town. The best hotel they've got."

His eyes find mine in the mirror. "Town's off Blackpine land, ma'am."

"That's the point. It's neutral ground. No pack owns a brick of it, so no Alpha gets a say in where I sleep."

He opens his mouth. My sweetest smile shuts it for him, and he starts the car.

Every pack for miles does its business in town.

They trade there and sign treaties there, and they all have their pups at the same healing center, because no Alpha would ever let a rival own the best healers.

I leave that house with my purse, my pup and my freedom, and I don't look back once.

The next few days are a blur of work, and I love every minute.

The meeting room at Greyfell's pack hall becomes my second home. Maps, draft terms and cold herbal tea cover the long table.

Ian stands at the window with his phone at his ear and his sleeves rolled up over his tattoos.

Looking at that broad back, I feel a rush of gratitude.

When my mother vanished with my brother, I shut down. Years later the wolf sickness nearly finished me, and I turned even colder.

Ian dragged me out of that dark place, one terrible joke at a time.

He loves me. He's never said it and never needed to. It's in every late night and every cup of tea and a snack he brings me without being asked.

I wish I could love him back the same way, because he'd make a wonderful mate. But Ian has always felt like home. Like family.

Back then I only had eyes for Cormac, a male who saw me as a useful tool.

"He's confirmed," Ian says, hanging up. His eyes gleam. "Theodore Watson will be at the Alphas' Ball tonight."

My pulse jumps. Alpha Watson is the wolf everybody's chasing. Whichever pack he allies with will be too powerful to ever be vulnerable again.

"Cormac will be there too," I point out. "Hunting the same Alpha."

"I know. But I've got a secret weapon." He grins. "You."

He drops into the chair next to mine.

"There's more. Cormac has a new partner for this. Emerson Roth."

I whistle.

"The Roths? Traders from the far coast. No pack, no Alpha, and more money than Blackpine and Greyfell put together."

"It gets better. Emerson has a little sister. Pretty thing, smells like honeysuckle, lately she can usually be seen hanging off your husband's arm."

"Leilani is a Roth?"

"That's the one."

Apparently the mistress comes with a rich big brother, and the whole picture suddenly gets a lot clearer.

"Two males that ambitious won't share nicely for long," I muse. "But while it lasts, they'll be nearly impossible to beat."

Ian shrugs. "I believe in us."

My phone buzzes against the table. It's Cormac.

"Yes?"

"Since we've agreed on the divorce, I won't question your absence from the house. For now."

How generous, from a male with no say over where I sleep.

"However. Until it's final, you're still my wife, and some events need you there. There's a ball tonight. I expect you at it."

He wants his obedient pregnant wife on his arm, so he looks like a family man in front of Alpha Watson.

The same Alpha whose allegiance Ian and I are about to steal from under his nose.

"Sure," I say easily. "I'll be there at seven."

There's a short pause on the line. He sounds almost surprised.

"Good."

He hangs up without a goodbye.

Ian raises an eyebrow. "You're going with him?"

"I told him I'd be there." I toss the phone onto the maps. "I never said on whose arm."

(Peyton)Emerson's tall shadow falls across our table.Leilani trails behind him with her hand wrapped around his sleeve, like she's five years old. Then she sees who I'm having dinner with, and the smug look curdles. She forces a tight little smile."Brooke," she says, sweet as syrup. "What a surprise."Brooke doesn't even blink. She takes a slow sip of her wine and looks straight through her, the way you'd look through a window.Emerson clears his throat."Celebrating something, Ms. Knox?"It's polite, and it's fishing. I don't give him anything. I just lift my chin and smile a small, quiet smile. He stares at my face a second too long.Something crosses that cold expression of his. He blinks, and the sharp edge drops out of his voice."It's strange," he murmurs. "When you smile like that, you look just like my sister."I frown. His sister is standing right there, holding his sleeve. Why wouldn't he just say I look like Leilani? Before I can work it out, he's himself again."Enjoy y

  • The Mate He Never Marked   Chapter 9 The Proxy

(Peyton)The morning after the Alphas' Ball, I'm still buzzing.Taking Cormac's bet wasn't a whim. It was a declaration of war, and wars need an army.Since I'm not allowed within sniffing distance of Ian, he sends me the most powerful ally he can offer. The knock on my hotel door comes early, but I’m already up, phone at my ear."Peyton, meet Brooke Hickman," Ian says, sounding very pleased with himself. "She's the sharpest negotiator I've got. Try not to scare each other."I open the door to a she-wolf who looks like she eats rival emissaries for breakfast.Brooke is a few years older than me, with a sharp haircut, dark eyes, and no time for nonsense. She doesn't smile and she doesn't shake my hand. She walks straight past me, drops a heavy case on the table, and starts laying out treaty drafts."Blackwell says you're the best. Show me."We click before the first pot of tea is empty.A good partner at the table is rare, and working with Brooke is easy. Nobody fights over who's in ch

  • The Mate He Never Marked   Chapter 8 The Terms of Engagement

(Cormac)Silence stretches between us.She actually believes she can threaten my pack.Every wolf in this ballroom sees a female who washed out.One nice chat with Watson doesn't change that, and making him see it too won't be difficult.Peyton was good at the table once. If she were still that wolf, one pregnancy wouldn't have turned her into a tired housewife. It's time she remembered how things really work."You want to play games, Peyton?"I step closer, so she has to tip her head back to meet my eyes."Then prove you belong at the table. You want me to take you seriously? You want me to even discuss your terms? Fine. Get Theodore Watson to give Greyfell his word."Her eyes narrow a little. It's the only sign she's listening."Until you do, you're not a threat. You're a pest buzzing around my alliance."I look past her at Ian Blackwell. He's standing far too close to my wife, and his scent is still on her sleeve. My wolf wants to take his arm off at the shoulder. It has nothing to

(Peyton)All the color drains out of Leilani's face. She makes a small, choked sound, spins on her high heels, and runs.Emerson turns a cold stare on Cormac. He doesn't say a word, and he doesn't have to. The look says it all.Fix this, or else.Cormac curses under his breath, shoots me one last glare, and chases after his mistress.Emerson steps around the curtain and straightens his jacket. Ian stays planted at my side like a very large guard dog. Emerson acts like he isn't there."I apologize for the drama," he says. It's polite, with no warmth in it at all. "My sister is very sensitive."I give him my best treaty-table smile."No need to apologize for Leilani. That's a normal reaction from a girl who just found out her perfect Alpha is a lying asshole."His sharp eyes travel over my dress and my straight back."I'll admit, Mrs. Whelan, this whole evening is a surprise. I was told a very different story about the state you were in.""It's Ms. Knox. I never was Luna, and I'm done b

  • The Mate He Never Marked   Chapter 6 The Greyfell Emissary

(Peyton)Walking into the Alphas' Ball feels less like a party and more like stepping into a trap with nice lighting. My hand on Ian's arm keeps me steady. My knee is strapped under the dress, and the healer's salve is doing its best.Every eye in the ballroom follows us in, and every nose catches it. The Alpha of Blackpine's pregnant wife is wearing another Alpha's scent on her sleeve.Whispers race ahead of us through the crowd. For any she-wolf, this is social suicide. For the quiet, obedient wife Cormac ordered for tonight, it's a slap in the face with the whole room watching.Across the ballroom, he freezes. His drink tips in his hand and nearly spills. For one second his wolf looks out of his eyes, and it's furious. Then the polite mask slides back on.He doesn't explode.Alphas who explode in front of Theodore Watson don't win alliances. He sets his glass on a passing tray and comes prowling through the crowd like a predator. He stops close enough to drown me in orange peel and

(Cormac)I hang up and toss the phone onto the table, satisfied."She'll be there," I tell the male sitting across from me.Emerson Roth is my new partner. With Roth money behind Blackpine's warriors, no pack alive can outbid us for Alpha Watson’s alliance. He leans back and folds his hands."Peyton was the best emissary in the territories. Watson respects her. If she speaks for your plan tonight, he might finally say yes. But she's been out of sight for months, and it makes Alphas nervous.""She's been focusing on her health."The lie puts a sour edge on the air. Emerson is polite enough not to sniff."She also just found out about you and my sister. Are you sure she'll speak for you at all?""She'll do what she's told.""Ian Blackwell wants the same alliance. They grew up together, and you're not her favorite wolf right now. What if he's already asked her?"I wave it off."Impossible. She gave up her post at Greyfell without a fight, and she's never once asked for it back. She isn't
