Walking into Blackpine's pack hall hurts in more ways than one.
My knee has swollen tight against my trousers, and every step feels like somebody's sawing at the bone with a butter knife.
I used to love this lobby. For years I ran the joint treaty talks in this building, and wolves stepped out of my way hoping the emissary would smile at them.
The girl at the front desk used to jump to her feet when I came in.
Today she glances up, sees who it is, and looks back down at her screen.
I get a nod. A very small one.
The elevator is worse.
Three warriors and a treaty clerk are already inside. All of us have argued terms over cold pizza at two in the morning.
Not one of them looks me in the eye. Four noses twitch, and four pairs of eyes drop to my belly.
"Not long now," the clerk says, to my stomach. "How's our little heir doing in there?"
"The heir's fine. I've been better, thanks for asking."
He chuckles like I told a joke.
"The whole pack's praying for a strong one," one of the warriors adds. "You just rest and let the pup grow. That's your only job now."
My only job.
They can smell Cormac's blood in the pup, and that's all they smell. The female wrapped around it is packaging.
Nobody in here remembers the emissary. They see a tired container carrying Blackpine's future. And a warning to every ambitious she-wolf about what happens when you fall into the Alpha's bed.
The doors open, and I limp out before I say something I'd enjoy too much.
Honeysuckle hits me halfway down the hall.
Cormac's office door is half open.
He's sitting on the edge of his desk. She's standing between his knees, playing with his collar.
She says something too soft for me to catch, and he tilts his head down to listen like nothing in the world matters more. His hand rests on her hip.
They look more married than we ever did.
Then he looks up and sees me, and his face turns to ice.
He crosses the room and takes the folder out of my hands. He doesn't thank me. His eyes run over my tired face and my limp, and he doesn't ask about those either.
"Wait here. Don't leave. We need to talk."
He glances back at her, and his voice softens.
"Leilani, I'll be right back. The Elders are waiting on these."
So, she has a name.
The door shuts behind him, and I'm alone with the wolf I like least in this territory. He's a close second.
My knee is throbbing all the way up to my hip now. I lean back against the wall and let it take some of my weight.
Leilani looks me over slowly. Swollen ankles, plain clothes, big belly.
Then she starts chatting, like we're girlfriends at a café.
"I've always been terrified of getting pregnant," she says, light as air. "I'm so scared it would ruin my figure. Did pregnancy do that to you?"
It's meant to sting. Funny thing is, it calms me right down.
She's looking straight at me and she doesn't see a rival. She doesn't see the emissary or the brain. She sees the fat, tired mistake her Alpha wants to forget.
Good. Wolves who underestimate me have always been my favorite kind.
"I had a wolf sickness a few years back," I say evenly. "The suppressants changed my body and scent. The pup didn't."
"Oh, that's good to know." Her smile is pure sugar, and her eyes are mean. "Because my healer just called. I'm pregnant too."
The room goes quiet.
I breathe in, hunting for the sour edge of a lie. All I get is honeysuckle. She's soaked the whole office in it.
Either way, it doesn't hurt the way she wants it to. It barely lands.
My blank face clearly annoys her.
"Cormac doesn't know yet," she says, checking her nails. "I'll tell him once your divorce is final. I don't need a pup to hold on to a male. And honestly, you're not worth the trouble."
She picks up her handbag and smooths her dress.
"Anyway, I have a spa appointment. We have a date tonight, and I need to look perfect."
"Enjoy," I say sweetly. "Try the mud. It suits you."
Her smile slips for half a second. Then she sways out the door and pulls it shut behind her.
Getting to his desk takes a while. This knee needs a healer soon.
My head has never been clearer though.
She wanted that news to crush me. All it did was turn the last key in the lock.
I take the divorce papers out of my tote, pick up his fancy pen for the second time today, and sign.
Peyton Knox.
The female who cried over this Alpha doesn't live here anymore. The emissary Ian called is wide awake, and she has a treaty to win.
The papers go in his top drawer, where he keeps his private things.
Let him find them. Let him choke on them.
I push the drawer shut and lower myself into his big leather chair to wait.
My knee has earned the rest.
(Peyton)Emerson's tall shadow falls across our table.Leilani trails behind him with her hand wrapped around his sleeve, like she's five years old. Then she sees who I'm having dinner with, and the smug look curdles. She forces a tight little smile."Brooke," she says, sweet as syrup. "What a surprise."Brooke doesn't even blink. She takes a slow sip of her wine and looks straight through her, the way you'd look through a window.Emerson clears his throat."Celebrating something, Ms. Knox?"It's polite, and it's fishing. I don't give him anything. I just lift my chin and smile a small, quiet smile. He stares at my face a second too long.Something crosses that cold expression of his. He blinks, and the sharp edge drops out of his voice."It's strange," he murmurs. "When you smile like that, you look just like my sister."I frown. His sister is standing right there, holding his sleeve. Why wouldn't he just say I look like Leilani? Before I can work it out, he's himself again."Enjoy y
(Peyton)The morning after the Alphas' Ball, I'm still buzzing.Taking Cormac's bet wasn't a whim. It was a declaration of war, and wars need an army.Since I'm not allowed within sniffing distance of Ian, he sends me the most powerful ally he can offer. The knock on my hotel door comes early, but I’m already up, phone at my ear."Peyton, meet Brooke Hickman," Ian says, sounding very pleased with himself. "She's the sharpest negotiator I've got. Try not to scare each other."I open the door to a she-wolf who looks like she eats rival emissaries for breakfast.Brooke is a few years older than me, with a sharp haircut, dark eyes, and no time for nonsense. She doesn't smile and she doesn't shake my hand. She walks straight past me, drops a heavy case on the table, and starts laying out treaty drafts."Blackwell says you're the best. Show me."We click before the first pot of tea is empty.A good partner at the table is rare, and working with Brooke is easy. Nobody fights over who's in ch
(Cormac)Silence stretches between us.She actually believes she can threaten my pack.Every wolf in this ballroom sees a female who washed out.One nice chat with Watson doesn't change that, and making him see it too won't be difficult.Peyton was good at the table once. If she were still that wolf, one pregnancy wouldn't have turned her into a tired housewife. It's time she remembered how things really work."You want to play games, Peyton?"I step closer, so she has to tip her head back to meet my eyes."Then prove you belong at the table. You want me to take you seriously? You want me to even discuss your terms? Fine. Get Theodore Watson to give Greyfell his word."Her eyes narrow a little. It's the only sign she's listening."Until you do, you're not a threat. You're a pest buzzing around my alliance."I look past her at Ian Blackwell. He's standing far too close to my wife, and his scent is still on her sleeve. My wolf wants to take his arm off at the shoulder. It has nothing to
(Peyton)All the color drains out of Leilani's face. She makes a small, choked sound, spins on her high heels, and runs.Emerson turns a cold stare on Cormac. He doesn't say a word, and he doesn't have to. The look says it all.Fix this, or else.Cormac curses under his breath, shoots me one last glare, and chases after his mistress.Emerson steps around the curtain and straightens his jacket. Ian stays planted at my side like a very large guard dog. Emerson acts like he isn't there."I apologize for the drama," he says. It's polite, with no warmth in it at all. "My sister is very sensitive."I give him my best treaty-table smile."No need to apologize for Leilani. That's a normal reaction from a girl who just found out her perfect Alpha is a lying asshole."His sharp eyes travel over my dress and my straight back."I'll admit, Mrs. Whelan, this whole evening is a surprise. I was told a very different story about the state you were in.""It's Ms. Knox. I never was Luna, and I'm done b
(Peyton)Walking into the Alphas' Ball feels less like a party and more like stepping into a trap with nice lighting. My hand on Ian's arm keeps me steady. My knee is strapped under the dress, and the healer's salve is doing its best.Every eye in the ballroom follows us in, and every nose catches it. The Alpha of Blackpine's pregnant wife is wearing another Alpha's scent on her sleeve.Whispers race ahead of us through the crowd. For any she-wolf, this is social suicide. For the quiet, obedient wife Cormac ordered for tonight, it's a slap in the face with the whole room watching.Across the ballroom, he freezes. His drink tips in his hand and nearly spills. For one second his wolf looks out of his eyes, and it's furious. Then the polite mask slides back on.He doesn't explode.Alphas who explode in front of Theodore Watson don't win alliances. He sets his glass on a passing tray and comes prowling through the crowd like a predator. He stops close enough to drown me in orange peel and
(Cormac)I hang up and toss the phone onto the table, satisfied."She'll be there," I tell the male sitting across from me.Emerson Roth is my new partner. With Roth money behind Blackpine's warriors, no pack alive can outbid us for Alpha Watson’s alliance. He leans back and folds his hands."Peyton was the best emissary in the territories. Watson respects her. If she speaks for your plan tonight, he might finally say yes. But she's been out of sight for months, and it makes Alphas nervous.""She's been focusing on her health."The lie puts a sour edge on the air. Emerson is polite enough not to sniff."She also just found out about you and my sister. Are you sure she'll speak for you at all?""She'll do what she's told.""Ian Blackwell wants the same alliance. They grew up together, and you're not her favorite wolf right now. What if he's already asked her?"I wave it off."Impossible. She gave up her post at Greyfell without a fight, and she's never once asked for it back. She isn't
