Maeve

By nine thirty, the eastern ballroom had become a cage dressed in silver.

Blackthorne Mansion had been designed to impress enemies before they ever reached the wolves living inside it. The ballroom alone was larger than the council hall back home, with ceilings high enough to swallow the music drifting from the quartet stationed on the raised platform near the eastern wall.

Three enormous chandeliers hung overhead.

Hundreds of narrow crystals caught the candlelight and scattered it across the polished black marble floor. Every reflection looked sharp enough to cut. Silver branches twisted around the tall stone columns, their bare limbs decorated with white flowers that gave off a faint wintery scent.

Beyond the wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, the forest waited.

The full moon hung over the trees, turning their upper branches silver while the ground beneath them remained hidden in darkness.

That was where we would be sent in less than three hours.

Forty-two women entered.

Only some of us would leave alone.

I took a glass of champagne from a passing servant but did not drink it.

The bubbles rose slowly through the pale liquid while I studied the women scattered throughout the ballroom. Some stood in large groups, laughing too loudly and pretending they were not watching one another. Others remained near the walls, their backs protected while they examined every entrance and exit.

Several had dressed for the ceremony.

Silk gowns.

Jewels.

Hair braided with silver thread or decorated with flowers.

Others had come prepared for the Hunt itself. They wore fitted trousers beneath long tunics, boots built for rough terrain, and clothing dark enough to disappear between the trees.

I fell somewhere between them.

My dark green dress looked formal from a distance, but the skirt had been split discreetly along both sides to allow movement. Soft leather boots were hidden beneath the hem. Three blades rested against my body, one at my thigh, another beneath the fitted bodice, and the smallest tucked inside the sleeve around my left wrist.

The Huntmaster’s people had searched us when we arrived. They found nothing. Mara had taught me how to hide a weapon before I was old enough to shift.

The thought tightened something inside my chest.

I lifted the untouched champagne to my lips, mostly so no one would notice the way my expression changed.

Mara had been beneath Ronan’s home for three years. Three winters. Three summers. Three years without seeing the sky except through whatever narrow window he might have allowed her.

I had imagined the dungeon a thousand different ways. Wet stone. Rusting chains. Silver bars burning her skin whenever she moved.

I had imagined her thin and pale, her dark hair hanging in dirty strands around her face. I had imagined bruises along her arms and old blood beneath her fingernails.

The letters never gave enough details.

Perhaps she had been afraid Ronan would punish her if she wrote too much. Perhaps he already had.

My fingers tightened around the stem of the glass.

“Careful.” A woman’s voice came from my right.

I turned.

The she-wolf standing beside me nodded toward my hand. “You’re about to snap that.”

I looked down. A thin crack had already appeared near the base of the stem.

I set the glass on the nearest table before it broke. “Thank you.”

“I’d hate for you to injure yourself before the Hunt.” Her mouth curved slightly. “It would make the rest of us look bad.”

She was close to my height, with warm brown skin, dark eyes, and tightly curled hair gathered into a high knot. Unlike most of the women wearing gowns, she had chosen a fitted black tunic over narrow trousers. A belt circled her waist, but the officials had clearly removed anything that might have served as a weapon.

A narrow scar disappeared beneath the left side of her jaw.

She held out her hand. “Sable Wynn.”

“Maeve Cross.”

Her grip remained firm, but her expression shifted when she heard my surname. Not fear. Recognition.

“You’re Mara Cross’s sister.”

I released her hand. “So I’ve been told.”

Sable studied me for another moment, apparently deciding whether to ask the same questions everyone else wanted answered.

She did not.

“I’m from Frostmere,” she said instead.

I knew the name.

A small mountain pack on the far northern ridge. They had lost nearly a third of their hunting grounds during a landslide two years earlier. The winter following it had been brutal.

“What are you hoping to win?” I asked.

“Land.” Her answer came immediately. “Blackthorne owns an unused stretch of valley south of our border. If I reach the sanctuary, Alpha Darius will have to grant me a favor. I intend to ask for it.”

“And if he refuses?”

“The Hunt laws won’t allow him to.”

“He might find another way around them.”

Sable smiled. “That’s why I’m asking for the land in front of every witness.”

MaeveI slept for three hours.Apparently becoming an accidental Queen, throwing fifteen wolves through the air, surviving a drive by family reunion, and attending a blood debt feast still wasn't enough to convince my body to sleep longer. Rude.By the time Ronan and I reached the lower cells, Cassian was already waiting outside Mara's interrogation room with coffee. The stone corridor smelled faintly of damp and old iron, the kind of smell that clung to the walls no matter how many torches burned. He held one cup out to me. I stared at it."For me?""You look terrible.""That's incredibly sweet.""You're welcome."Ronan took the cup from my hand, smelled it, then handed it back. I looked at him."Did you just check my coffee for poison?""Yes."Cassian tipped his head back toward the ceiling. "We're doing this now?"Ronan opened the door. "We're doing this forever."Unfortunately, I believed him.Mara was already seated inside a new truth circle that Elowen had put in last night. No

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 157: For the Living

RonanIt took Caine approximately twelve minutes to pretend an invading royal army had not interrupted dinner. I loved my pack. I also suspected every one of them was insane.Tables had been righted. Food reheated. Children reclaimed whatever seats they had abandoned when the horns sounded. Someone had restarted the music. The night air still smelled faintly of smoke and crushed grass where the fighting had been, but the fire pit blazed on as though nothing had ever tried to put it out.Gemma stood behind one of the serving tables threatening bodily harm against a warrior who had apparently taken three servings before everyone else had eaten. Normal. Almost.Maeve sat beside me with a plate she had barely touched. I looked at it. Then at her."Eat."Her eyes narrowed. "Don't start.""You haven't eaten.""I've had a busy evening."I pushed the plate closer. She stabbed a potato with unnecessary aggression. Satisfied, I looked away. The empty chair remained at the end of the central tab

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 156: Get Off Your Knees

MaeveFor several seconds after the last Silver Crown wolf disappeared beyond the western markers, nobody moved. Not them. Not us. Not me. The clearing had gone so quiet that I could hear my own breathing. Then I turned around. And realized every person behind me was still on their knees.Cassian. Torin. Theron. Tyson. Corina. Lyra. Caine warriors. Trackers. Even Soren had one hand braced against the ground as if she had tried to fight whatever I had done and lost.Only Ronan remained standing. My stomach dropped."Oh."Cassian slowly lifted his head. His expression was flat. "Excellent observation, Luna.""Shut up.""I would love to." He glanced pointedly at his knees. "Unfortunately, I'm apparently awaiting royal permission."Fuck. I immediately reached for whatever part of me had pressed them down. The power was still there. Huge. Cold. Waiting. I pulled it back."Get up."The pressure vanished. Everyone moved at once. Some stood quickly. Others staggered. Theron rolled one shoulde

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 155: The Queen They Found

MaeveI stared at my mother, words gathering inside me that I knew better than to voice. None of them would have been polite. Behind me, Ronan’s anger pressed against our bond, hot and immediate, but I hardly noticed it anymore. Exhaustion had settled into my bones, a deep and bitter fatigue from years of others telling me what I thought, what I felt, and why I made the choices I did.My mother shifted her attention to Ronan, perhaps realizing she would get nowhere with me and hoping for a different outcome with him instead.“Alpha Caine,” she addressed him.Ronan’s expression became unreadable. “I would not,” he replied.“This does not have to end in blood,” she tried.“You crossed my border with an armed force,” he reminded her.“We came for our Queen.”“You found her,” he said, his voice growing cold. “She said no.”I felt something warm flicker inside me at that. He never claimed me. He never said I belonged to him. Just that I had said no.Isolde studied him carefully. “If you tr

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 154: The King Gideon Killed

MaeveThe words hung between us, heavy and foul, as if something rotten had been placed in the space that separated me from my mother.Ronan remained motionless, and so did I, but the tension behind me was palpable. Every Caine wolf could feel his anger, and so could the Silver Crown. My mother looked at Ronan with a wary, simmering hatred, as if he were some threat she had spent years preparing herself to despise.I shifted, stepping into her direct line of sight. “Stop looking at him,” I told her.

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 153: The Silver Crown Returns

MaeveThey came for their queen. Those words echoed in my mind as I walked across the western grounds, each step drawing me closer to the unknown. I had no idea what the words meant, nor was I sure I wanted to know. Ronan kept close, silent and steady beside me. Ahead, Cassian and Torin led the way with warriors fanning out through the thick brush. Theron, Tyson, Corina, and Lyra followed behind us, their presence a quiet reassurance. Not a single person spoke. The horns had gone silent, and somehow, that was more unsettling than their call. The trees thinned, branches falling away like a curtain opening, and I stopped in my tracks. My heart stuttered. The clearing beyond the Caine markers was filled with wolves... so many that I lost count. Not ten. Not twenty. Nearly a hundred, all standing in ordered ranks, some in wolf form, others shaped as humans, every one of them armed. Black and silver banners rose behind them, barely shifting in the night breeze, each one emblazoned with a c
