CHAPTER EIGHT
ZOEY The vampire slammed into him and buried his fangs in Gregory’s neck. Gregory thrashed on the ground and struggled to free himself but it was of no use. An Alpha was strong but he couldn’t withstand the effect of a vampire’s venom, especially as he was distracted and taken by surprise. In that moment, fear filled my body and I panicked. “What are you doing?!” I yelled and for some reason, it seemed like the vampire had heard me as he raised his head for Gregory’s neck and smiled at me. His teeth was coated with Gregory’s blood and his smile sent shivers down. I took a step back as I was scared that he’d attack me, but to my surprise, he dashed off. “Come back!” I yelled but he continued running away. I looked at the vampire and back at Gregory who was writhing on the floor in pain, and I became confused as I didn’t know what to do. Gregory growled loudly and blood poured out of his wound. At first I was confused, and I thought about shifting back to my human form to find help but before I could come to a decision on what to do, something shifted in me and Frankie rushed after the vampire, chasing him in the night. I could feel how angry Frankie was as she chased after the vampire with the intention to kill him. I tried to stop Frankie but it seemed like she was acting out of her own control. The vampire was faster but Frankie didn’t give up. She aggressively chased him till we got to the far end of the woods. Then to my surprise, the vampire suddenly stopped and he had a wide smile on his face, showing his bloodied fangs. “That’s right, come with me. You belong to our lord,” The vampire stood far from me and he said to my surprise. What was he talking about? And what was it with their obsessed lord? The vampire seemed to understand my confusion and his smile widened, “The next time he touches you, I won’t spare his life. No one touches what belongs to the lord.” He said. “You’re crazy!” I sneered in anger and he just laughed. “Tell your lord to leave me alone!” “That’s impossible. The lord doesn’t take no for an answer!” The vampire replied, “Come with me now, or you’ll regret it.” “You can go to hell!” I spat in disgust. “I don’t belong to anyone, and I definitely don’t care about your lord. Tell him to deal with his obsession.” “You’ll pay for this. It’ll all be your fault and everyone will blame you.” He said and I tried to understand what he meant. Then something clicked! It was a distraction! He had made me chase him to this point so that I would leave Gregory alone to die. How was I foolish to fall for it! I growled as I turned around and rushed back and I could hear the vampire laughing out loud in satisfaction like he had achieved what he wanted. My heart raced and my body trembled as I rushed back. I didn’t know why I cared about Alpha Graham even when he was rude and cruel to me, but I did. By the time I eventually got back, Gregory had shifted back to his human form and I looked down at Alpha Graham. His skin was deathly pale and he wasn’t breathing. I wasn’t sure if he was unconscious or dead. A feral vampire’s venom was very powerful and could even kill the strongest werewolf, and that was why they put a chain on me, to curb my venom since they thought I was a vampire. I stared at Alpha Graham for a while in confusion and panic, and then I shifted back to my human form. “What are we going to do, Frankie?” I asked worriedly. I was almost tearing up but I tried my best to keep my emotions in check. “I have no idea, Zoey. A vampire’s bite is very deadly.” Frankie sounded just as scared and confused as me. She sounded like there was no hope but I refused to give up. I didn’t want to. And then, the next second, I did the most impulsive thing that shocked even me. I crouched down beside him, placed my mouth on the wound and began sucking out the venom. “Zoey!” Frankie yelled in panic and fear, “Are you crazy? What are you doing? Do you want to die?” “I won’t die,” I said in my head, spat out the venom and continued sucking, “I won’t die,” I repeated, “because I won’t swallow it.” I knew that I had acted impulsively and foolishly but I didn’t mind and I still didn’t regret it. All that mattered in that moment, was to save Alpha Graham’s life. “You’ll get us killed, Zoey. You can’t do this.” Frankie was frantically pacing around in worry in my head but I didn’t want to give her a listening ear. I spat out the venom and repeated it again. I looked at him and then I realized that he didn’t look so pale like before and though he was still unconscious, it looked like he had improved. I placed my head on his chest and listened carefully. His heart was beating very slowly and I could barely hear it, but it gave me hope that he was going to be alright. I sat back down with a tired sigh, “See Frankie, I told you I won’t die.” I said with a smile. “You’re crazy!” Frankie said but I could tell that she was relieved. I didn’t know why I did what I did but all that mattered was that I had done it. In that moment when I saw Alpha Graham in that position, all forms of rationality left me and the only thing that felt right was saving his life. But just when I thought everything was going to be okay, I heard someone yell, “Hey! What did you do to Alpha Graham?” Beta Ronald asked as he rushed to us with other pack warriors behind him. “I—,” I tried to explain but that familiar guard didn’t give me a chance and he screamed. “She bit the Alpha! She tried to kill him!”CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY SIXGRAHAMIt wasn’t often that the Council of Elders called for me, and never, not once in all my years had they asked for Zoey too.The message came through one of the sentry guards early in the morning, just as Zoey and I were leaving the dining hall. The young wolf was breathless, nervous as he handed over the note with shaking hands. My name was scribbled across the front in bold strokes, and beneath it, a simple line:Come to the council chambers and bring your mate along with you.I stared at it for a long moment.“What is it?” Zoey asked, peering over my shoulder.I handed her the note. The moment her eyes scanned it, she looked up at me. “Why do they want me there?”“I don’t know,” I said, frowning. “They’ve never involved you before.”She was silent for a second, then folded the paper and slipped it into her pocket. “Should we be worried?”I looked at her. The girl who had once been my enemy. My burden. The girl I’d almost thrown away because I
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVECHARLIEI didn’t mean to see it.I wasn’t trying to snoop or spy or dig up something that wasn’t mine. I just needed air. The house was too loud and there many footsteps, too many people looking my way and whispering amongst themselves. I told one of the patrol wolves I was stepping out for a walk, and he barely nodded. No one really cared where I went aslong as I didnt cause any troubles and go didn’t go too far.But I did.The wind had shifted, carrying something strange not a scent I could place, but a feeling. The air was cold but the smell was rotten and old. It pulled me off the main path, deeper into the trees. And then I saw it.A shape; twisted and hunched, its back curved like it had too many bones. It was dragging something. I couldn’t see what. It moved low to the ground, half-crawling, half-sliding like it didn’t need legs to move. Its skin was pale, almost grey, like it had been drained of life.I froze. It didn’t see me, or maybe it di
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FOURGRAHAMI didn’t like the silence. I liked silence overall but not this kind of silence. The type that hung in the air too long like the forest could feel that something eerie was about to happen.I was in my office when the knock came. I ignored it the first time, but then it sounded again, harder this time.“Come in,” I said without looking up.My beta, Ronald entered. He hesitated in the doorway, a habit of him I noticed he did whenever he felt unease. That already told me something was wrong.“What is it?” I asked. He shut the door behind him. “There’s something… odd. I just came in from the north patrol. One of the sentries caught a scent. He said it didn’t smell like rogue or wolf.”I sat up straighter. “What did it smell like then?”Ronald swallowed. “Strange but it smelled like burnt iron, and old blood. Something… dead, but not really dead.”My fingers curled slightly around the edge of the desk.“Where?” I asked.“Right along the stream, clo
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY THREEVIKTORThe wind had changed. It always did before something bad happened. Before blood was spilled or secrets cracked open like bones under pressure. Most people didn’t notice that kind of thing bt I did.I’d lived long enough to know the scent of danger. It had a certain stillness to it. A certain taste in the air like burnt metal and silence.Lily was asleep.I could hear her breathing softly from the other side of the room. She liked to sleep near the windows, where moonlight poured in like silver paint. She didn’t mind that I never really slept. She said it made her feel safe, knowing someone was awake while she drifted off.And I stayed awake, not because I had to, but because I didn’t want to miss anything.I stood near the balcony now, arms crossed, eyes on the trees in the distance.Someone had entered the woods today. It was a woman and she was alone. At first, I thought it might be Zoey. She had a habit of wandering, especially when she wa
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY TWOCHARLIEI didn’t belong here.No matter how many times I told myself I’d changed, and no matter how often I smiled and tried to act useful, I could still feel the stares. I could feel the weight of everyone’s judgment pressing down on my back as I walked through the pack house.Even the walls felt like they remembered who I used to be.Graham had said I could stay. That didn’t mean the pack had forgiven me. Zoey especially hadn’t. She barely looked in my direction during breakfast, and when she did, it was with a tight jaw and colder eyes than I remembered.Maybe I deserved it. I truly did. I didn’t blame her one bit. I betrayed her trust and chased her out of the pack. But I wasn’t the same girl who stood beside Kelvin, laughing while he tore through lives like they meant nothing.I’d made mistakes, terrible ones but I wanted to fix them, that is if anyone would let me.I found Hannah near the back of the garden, pruning something with a pair of shea
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY ONEGRAHAMI woke up to the soft weight of Zoey curled beside me, her head resting just below my collarbone. The sun was slipping through the curtains, casting lines of gold across the bed and for the first time in what felt like forever, it was quiet and peaceful.Zoey stirred and blinked up at me with sleepy eyes. I brushed a hand down her back.“Morning,” I murmured.“Mm,” she hummed, stretching slightly. “Is it weird that I miss her?”“Who?”“Lily,” she whispered. “She’s been gone for like a day, but it feels longer. I didn’t realize how used to her I was until she wasn’t around.”I looked down at her, running my thumb along her arm. “We can visit her. She’s not that far.”Her eyes lit up just a little, and I could tell she didn’t expect me to say yes that fast.“You sure?”I nodded. “She’s still part of our pack. And… you need her.”Zoey sat up, brushing her hair back. “Then let’s go.”The walk to the edge of the old vampire ruins was oddly quiet. No
