The Introduction

Jennifer's deep blue eyes widened slowly, as she processed the information little by little. The mayor wanted to marry her?

"Marry you?" She asked, trying hard not to let the surprise she felt seep into her voice. It was a bad attempt really, because Elijah could hear it loud and clear.

He shrugged. "I know it sounds a little like what I just helped get out of, but I promise it will be different. I will respect you the way you deserve, and I don't even have the time to get in your way. Think of it as legally giving you a place to stay."

She lowered her eyes from him as he stood up, and went to the coffee maker on the far table. He poured some into two cups and the strong scent of coffee filled the room.

"Here," He said to her and handed a cup. She collected it, then dropped it slowly on the table.

Her mind reeled with possibilities as she studied his faraway expression. He didn't seem like he cared much for her as herself. Maybe he was taking care of her as more of a pitiable perso
