Chapter 3

Author: Dancing Flower
On the drive home, Lauren finally told me what she'd promised.

"Brittany's family expects a ring and an engagement package worth about $55,000. They're looking at a starter condo in the Lakeside district, right around $220,000. Add the wedding and the reception, and we need to have roughly $300,000 ready."

She glanced over.

"Daniel, how much do we have saved?"

I leaned back in the passenger seat.

"How much do you have saved?"

Her voice shot up.

"Why are you asking about my savings? I don't even have a job. Obviously you make more than I do."

I laughed without any humor in it.

"So he's your only brother, but you don't want to spend a dollar of your own money on him. Some sister."

She had nothing to say to that. She glared at me, then finally muttered, "Maybe thirty-five thousand."

I gave her $4,000 every month.

Four years of marriage, and she had thirty-five thousand.

In those same four years I'd bought Kyle a car. Whenever her parents needed help with appointments or repairs or bills, I was the first call.

My own parents dropped off groceries almost every week. I ate most weekday meals at the office.

There was no way Lauren was spending $4,000 a month on food and household basics.

So where had it gone?

She loved playing the generous big sister, and the bill always disappeared into a bottomless pit.

"Oh, and after the wedding they want to honeymoon in Europe," she added. "That's another twenty or thirty thousand. Plus Brittany's jewelry.

"Three hundred thousand probably isn't enough."

I finally snapped.

"Is Kyle your brother or your son?"

Her expression hardened.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means your parents brought him into the world and then stopped. He's a grown man. Why is their son getting married on his brother-in-law's money?

"I don't owe Kyle a wedding."

I looked straight at her.

"Our savings are for Ethan. Nobody else is touching them."

She exploded behind the wheel.

I told her to pull over, got out, called a rideshare, and left while she shouted my name after me.

That night she went back to ignoring me. I returned the favor.

A few days later, she showed up at my office.

"Kyle's engagement dinner is tomorrow and I'm short. Transfer me fifteen thousand."

"No."

Her eyes widened.

"What did you say?"

"I said no."

I kept my voice flat.

"Kyle isn't my son. If you make a scene here, I'll have security walk you out."

I turned and left, then told reception not to let her past the lobby again.

My company wasn't a place she could wander into whenever she felt like it. Whatever she wanted to scream about, she'd have to think twice first.

Gary called next, tired of waiting.

I gave him one sentence.

"He's your son, not mine."

Then I hung up. He could be as angry as he liked.

Kyle's engagement went ahead anyway. I attended.

I contributed nothing. Congratulations cost nothing, so I handed out plenty of those.

Then Lauren shocked me.

She produced the entire $55,000 her brother needed.

Patricia beamed at Brittany.

"Our Kyle is a lucky man. His sister looks after him, and she always will. Once you marry into this family, you'll never go without."

Something in my chest went tight.

I turned to look at Lauren. She wore a small, satisfied smile, like everything was going exactly to plan.

It made no sense.

She'd told me she had about thirty-five thousand available. How was she going to cover a wedding and housing package worth three hundred thousand?

She had no job.

She couldn't touch my savings.

So had she borrowed it?

The thought hit hard enough that I made an excuse and left early.

The second I got home, I started tearing through drawers looking for the deed and the property file.

They were gone.

My stomach dropped.

I took our marriage certificate and my ID and drove straight to the bank.

The answer felt like a punch to the chest.

"Mr. Hart, an application was submitted three days ago for a $350,000 home equity loan against this property."

I called the police and had them removed, then sent Lauren a warning: bother me again and the affair evidence goes public. She stopped coming. Not long after, I saw her on the news.Lauren had been arrested in connection with a fraud case. Julian Reeve was nobody's fool. He'd poured a few hundred thousand dollars in and around her, and he'd also put stack after stack of paperwork in front of her to sign. She was too dazzled by the life to read any of it. She found out later that his family was in the lending business, and every one of those documents was a loan contract.Every dollar she'd spent, and there was over three hundred thousand of it, was money she owed. She couldn't repay a cent of it, so he sued her. With principal and interest, the claim came to nearly six hundred thousand dollars.Of course she panicked. And with nowhere else to turn, she thought of me.I'm not rich the way Julian is, but I clear about a quarter of a million a year. A few years of my life would hav

She nodded. Then she pushed her sleeve up.Her arm was covered in bruises, and there were small round burns from a cigarette."He hits me. I can't take it anymore."We never got married. Daniel, can we get back together?"There's no such thing as a free lunch. Whoever Kyle knew was never going to be a decent man, and rich men don't line up for a divorced woman with a small child.Lauren wasn't some breathtaking beauty either. What exactly did she think she was trading on? None of this surprised me in the slightest, so I turned her down without hesitating."That's not happening."She started sobbing."Daniel, help me. I can't stay with him, I can't take being hit anymore."If you won't take me back, then lend me money. Anything."And there it was. The real reason."Money? Your rich boyfriend has plenty. Why come to me? I don't owe you anything, and there's no money here."Her face went white."Daniel, for the sake of everything we were to each other, help me. Forty-five tho

On her way out she passed a couple of neighbors, and I watched them turn and start talking behind their hands. My heart was pounding. I pulled out and followed her.A luxury sedan picked her up and drove straight to a hotel.I sat there for a moment with my eyes closed. So this was where we'd ended up.I didn't confront her. I didn't say a word.I waited almost a month.Kyle's wedding was getting close when Lauren finally ran out of patience and laid it all out for me.The terms were the ones we'd already discussed. Forty-five thousand. Ethan stayed with me. I wouldn't pursue support from her.Looking at her face while she made her demands, I almost smiled. I signed, and we filed. On her way out she left me one last line."Daniel, you are the worst man I've ever known.""Sure. I'm the worst, and you're the capable one. I hope your future is everything you want it to be. Ideally you'll spend the rest of your life living for your brother, because nobody has ever been a better

Mom was nowhere near finished."If you want money out of us, the answer is no, and it will keep being no."And if you keep dragging this out, I'll tell every person we know exactly what kind of family you are. All of it."Lauren, understand me. I'm not letting this go. Either the two of you divorce, or you stay in this marriage and behave like part of this household instead of your brother's private bank. There is no third option."Dad spoke more quietly, but he was just as angry."You crossed a serious line. That house is the foundation of everything. We put up the down payment so our grandson would have a stable home in a good school district."You tried to put it at risk without telling him. We're not brushing that aside."For the first time, Lauren looked cornered. She turned to me with pleading eyes.I gave her two options. We divorce, or she stops financing Kyle entirely. Then Patricia slapped her across the face."I told you years ago to marry someone rich! You wouldn

Our house was worth a little over $650,000, and it sat in a popular district everybody wanted.Lauren had the nerve to borrow against it behind my back.My hands shook so badly I had to sit down. For a second I thought I might pass out.She wanted the reputation. The generous sister who took care of everything.I worked myself into the ground, came home after midnight, and couldn't drink a bottle of milk without hearing about it.And she was ready to gamble our home so she could throw her brother a spectacular wedding. That was the moment something in me shut off. This marriage was finished.I steadied myself and told the bank I was the titled owner, that I had never authorized the loan, and that the signature wasn't mine. Then I reported it.After reviewing the file, the bank confirmed the signature was forged and rejected the application. The moment the house was safe, I went to an attorney.I walked out with a proposed divorce and custody agreement. When I got home, Laur
