Chapter 1

Not only was the entire village going to attend the engagement ceremony, but it was also going to be broadcast to promote the culture of our village.

The elder stood on the stage and announced with a smile, “Willow, please come on stage to receive your silver crown and become John’s fiancee.”

All eyes landed on me.

Luke Lane, my brother, jabbed me with his elbow and teased me, “You’ve been dating John for eight years, Willow, and you’re finally tying the knot. Look at Dad. He’s grinning so hard.”

At that moment, John walked past me.

Since he was so close by, I could even smell the fragrance on his clothes.

However, he did not look at me. He did not even stop as he said coldly, “Don’t go on stage.”

I was stunned and had not registered what he said when he held Katherine’s hand.

As if she were reluctant to do so, Katherine took two steps forward. “This… isn’t right, John.”

“Don’t be scared.” John turned to her with a gentle gaze. “You’ve always wanted to experience an engagement here, right? We both wish for this.”

He went up the stage and picked up the silver crown with 999 gemstones. “Katherine, you’ve been teaching here as a volunteer for three years, and you’ve helped plenty of people. You’re kind and worthy of the silver crown.”

My father’s expression changed, and the elders stood up as well.

The assembly hall descended into chaos.

“Have you lost your mind, John?!” Luke rushed on stage and grabbed John’s collar.

“This is my sister’s engagement, and you’re letting someone else wear the silver crown?! Who do you take my sister for?!”

John scoffed and snapped, “Sincerity is the most important thing about the engagement. Katherine has done plenty of good things for the village. There’s nothing wrong with me giving her an engagement.”

Then, he put the silver crown on Katherine’s head without hesitation.

The villagers burst into a ruckus, and the chat went wild.

Everyone turned to me, as if they were waiting for me, the feisty one, to throw a tantrum. They wanted me to break down, go berserk, and create chaos.

Yet I did not move.

Instead, it was John who lost his patience and turned to me. “Do you really have to do this? It’s just a ceremony. Don’t blow things out of proportion.”

Katherine’s fans started desperately defending her in the chat.

[These villagers are so ungrateful!]

[The bride-to-be is so petty. She won’t even let the Volunteer Queen have her wish? It’s so off-putting.]

Katherine took a look at the angry villagers and the chat. Then, she teared up. “Willow, I just wanted to experience it. I’ll remove the crown and return it to you…”

“You don’t have to.” John grabbed her hand. “I gave it to you. It’s yours now. Willow, you need to be generous. Katherine is pure of heart. Don’t project your pettiness on her.”

I stared at the man I had loved for eight years. “John, do you have any idea what you’re saying?”

He was taken aback for a moment, and unease flashed in his eyes, but he soon regained his smug attitude. “Of course. It’s been eight years. You can wait a little longer. I’ll give you another silver crown that’s just like this one in the future.”

I smiled bitterly.

Katherine was not just a volunteer teacher from the city who came to our village to teach the children and give medicine to the elderly.

She had also used the hype of charity and being a volunteer teacher to gain a good reputation and tons of money online.

A few years ago, she had also saved John from a car accident.

Hence, all of her kindness became a pass for her to do whatever she wanted.

My eight-year relationship became the backdrop for a kind teacher to get her wish.

I avoided John’s outstretched hand and smiled calmly. “You’re right. We can’t let a kind person have any regrets.”

(Third-Person POV)The police sirens arrived from afar. Someone had called the police after the broadcast ended. Katherine was arrested under suspicion of defamation and fraud. MCN, her company, quickly released a statement after this matter went viral, announcing that it was going to cancel her contract. They stated that they were going to hold her accountable for violating her contract. The brands that had once hired her as a brand ambassador quickly pulled down all advertisements with her in them and asked for compensation. Katherine stayed slumped on the floor as she watched the messages that appeared on her phone. She saw the cancellation of contracts, compensation requests, insults, and lawsuits. John never looked at her. He stood still as he stared at Willow. He wanted to go over and apologize to her, but Samuel was right there. Willow had become someone else’s fiancee.(First-Person POV)The engagement ceremony ended. Samuel held my hand and brought me

(Third-Person POV)John stepped forward to shield Katherine. “Everyone, calm down! Katherine has done plenty of things for the village over the years. You’ve all seen it! It’s not easy for a city girl to come into the mountains to teach for three years.“Besides, she saved me before! How could someone who risked her life to save someone else do that?”The moment he finished speaking, a woman in a blue blouse snickered and said, “Boy, you’re really stupid.”The woman, who was called Agatha, stepped forward with a cigarette between her fingers. “You said she saved you? The first person who found you when you got into your accident was Willow. She saw your car in the ditch and dragged you out. “Then, she carried you for three miles down the mountain path. She was worried that you wouldn’t last until the ambulance arrived, so she carried you to the town’s hospital.“When she reached the hospital, her legs were trembling, and she was covered in blood. The moment she put you down, she

The bodyguards stopped John from reentering the crowd. He stood outside the area and watched everything that transpired on the stage. Katherine stood beside him and tugged at his sleeve. “John, let’s go… We’re not welcome here.”John did not move. His eyes were fixed on the stage as he watched Samuel position the crown on my head. He stared at the divine flower on the crown and the smile he had never seen before on my lips. I had been with him for eight years, and I had asked him for a wedding countless times over those years. I begged him to try on his wedding suit, to set a date, and to look at me seriously for once. Instead, what did he do?He put the silver crown on another woman’s head and let another woman wear my wedding dress. John had said that I had loved him for eight years and could not bear to leave his side. At most, I would just cry for a few days and wait for him to comfort me. Then, I would still ask my father to let me marry him. At the moment, I was s

Upon hearing this, a faint, mocking smile appeared on Samuel’s lips. He said nothing and just waved his hand. Two assistants carried an antique rosewood chest up the stage. The moment the chest was opened, everyone sucked in sharp breaths. A silver crown sat quietly on top of black velvet, but it did not just have gemstones and carved flowers. The silver threads were like hair strands, and they wove into the village’s divine flower through traditional filigree metalwork. The edges of the petals were adorned with nine sapphires, and they shone brilliantly under the sun. Compared to it, John’s silver crown looked crude and clumsy. Luke stood by the side and said in a quivering voice, “John, Samuel has known Willow since they were kids. He put more effort into his relationship with her than you did. “As for you, what did you do aside from making Willow cry over the past eight years?”John was kneeling on the floor. As he stared at the silver crown, he looked at his own.

John cradled his face and looked up in disbelief. “What…? Your wife?”Samuel did not even spare him another glance. Instead, he turned around and carefully lifted my bleeding arm. The icy look in his eyes turned instantly into pity and worry. “Sorry, I’m late.”He took out a clean, white handkerchief and wrapped it around my wound. The chat went wild. [Goodness! Who is this man?!][Can someone with such good looks truly exist?!][I want all his information within a minute!]Katherine took a step back in fear due to how intimidating Samuel was. Then, she saw how tentatively Samuel was acting around me, and there was a blatant look of jealousy in her eyes. She smiled and turned to John. “John, Willow is so good. She found a friend to help her with her act so soon.”John jolted, as if he had come to a realization. “Willow, I’ve underestimated you. Where did you get this actor? It must have been expensive renting him and giving him those clothes for a day. You’ve paid a lot

The next morning, the village drummers started playing the drums, and the paths were all covered in wedding decorations. Everyone thought that they were going to see a live broadcast of John and Katherine’s wedding today. The broadcast began on stage. Katherine went on stage in a wedding dress, and the chat went wild. [The wedding’s finally here! The Volunteer Queen is so pretty today!]In the next second, Katherine suddenly saw me wearing a wedding dress as well. “John…” John looked in the direction of her gaze, and he was stunned for a moment before he snickered. “Willow, you really came.”I headed to the stage. John crossed his arms with mockery in his eyes. “Didn’t you say that you’re marrying someone else? What now? Are you just wearing the wedding dress to come here and cause trouble?”I looked at him. “Who told you that I’m here to cause trouble? I am indeed here to marry someone else today.”A laugh slipped out of John’s mouth again. “Who do you think you’re f
