Chapter 4

Author: Lily Pears
That night, they were drinking on the terrace again.

I went back to the room alone and started packing.

The trip was supposed to last seven days. Only three had passed, but I was already done playing along with them.

I booked the earliest flight home the next morning.

It wasn't until I'd finished that I realized my charger was missing. Then I remembered Anders had borrowed it earlier that day, so I went to his room to get it.

The door wasn't locked. No one was inside.

The tablet beside the bed was still lit up. A new message popped onto the screen.

The group chat was called: [Forever Five]

Duncan had posted a video. It was the clip from yesterday of Brielle and Anders kissing. The replies underneath were full of laughing and cheering emojis.

[Finally got them to kiss.]

[Told you this would work.]

[Clark's face went completely ashen, and he still put up with it.]

[He's really good at pretending nothing bothers him.]

I stood beside the bed as my fingers slowly went cold.

It was a group chat without me.

I opened the message history. The earliest conversation was from three months ago.

Anders had posted a screenshot of the "Couples Swap" game. [Doesn't Clark always say he can fit in with us? Let's see how many rounds he can take.]

Preston replied almost immediately: [Make all his cards blank.]

Duncan added: [Make Brielle's and Anders's cards match. Start with holding hands and hugging, then work our way up to kissing. That'll be fun.]

I kept scrolling.

At first, Brielle hadn't replied. A long time later, she'd finally sent: [Come on, don't take it too far.]

I stared at those words, and some pathetic little spark of hope rose inside me. At least she'd tried to stop them.

Then I saw her next messages.

[Clark takes things too seriously. We still need him to handle the wedding. Don't actually make him mad enough to leave.]

Duncan sent a laughing emoji. [Relax. He can't leave you.]

Brielle replied: [True.]

That single word hit like a slap. So she hadn't been oblivious to the setup. She'd known from the beginning.

She knew every card in my box was blank. She knew everyone was waiting to watch me make a fool of myself.

And she knew I'd keep swallowing it, again and again.

Her only concern was that they might push me too far and interfere with my work planning her wedding.

I kept scrolling. Further down were the plans for this trip.

I'd sent them the itinerary I'd spent hours putting together. No one had replied in our group chat, but in this one, the five of them had been talking nonstop.

[The diving Clark planned sounds boring.]

[Anders hates the water. Let's switch it to a yacht party.]

Brielle wrote: [Don't tell him. We'll change it when we get there. He won't say no.]

They'd even discussed the room arrangements.

[Put Brielle and Anders in the family suite.]

[What about Clark?]

[The couch.]

[What if he refuses?]

Brielle replied: [I'll say a few things, and he'll agree.]

Standing in Anders's room, I suddenly found it hard to breathe.

All this time, I'd thought I was simply slow to warm up to people. That maybe I was the reason I'd never truly managed to become part of their circle.

So I'd tried harder. I remembered what they liked. I tolerated their jokes. I volunteered to handle every tedious problem.

Only now did I finally understand. It had never been that I couldn't find my way in. They had always been standing together on the other side of the door, hand in hand, watching me struggle outside and laughing because I couldn't get in.

A new message suddenly appeared in the group.

Preston asked: [Where's Clark?]

Duncan replied: [Probably sulking in his room. Should we go another round?]

A voice message from Anders appeared almost immediately. "Maybe we should stop. Clark actually seems pissed this time."

Brielle replied with a voice message of her own, "If he's mad, let him cool off. He's a grown man. Why is he being so dramatic?"

As I listened to her voice, the last trace of warmth in my chest disappeared.

I was about to turn off the tablet when another video suddenly appeared in the chat.

Duncan had secretly recorded it. In the video, only Brielle and Anders were left on the terrace.

Anders was drunk. He looked at her with an intensity I had never seen before. "Brielle, if I hadn't turned you down back then, would you still have ended up with Clark?"

My finger froze against the screen.

The wind was loud in the video. Brielle stayed silent for a long time.

Then she answered softly, "No."

Anders smiled. "Do you regret it now?"

Brielle didn't answer. Instead, she reached out and wiped the tears from his face. The gesture was so gentle that it answered the question for her.

The video ended abruptly.

The chat stayed silent for a few seconds.

Then Duncan sent: [Told you two were the ones who belonged together.]

Preston immediately joined in. [Clark was the one who came along later. He's been taking Anders's place all these years. It's about time he gave it back.]

A buzzing filled my ears. So that was how they saw me.

I had been with Brielle for seven years. I was the man she was about to marry, and somehow, in their eyes, I was the third person who had come between them.

I turned off the tablet and put the charger back where it had been.

I didn't confront anyone or storm out onto the terrace. There was no point. The answer was already clear enough.

I went back to my room and changed my ticket to the last flight out that night.

Two hours. That was more than enough time for me to leave.

If there had never been room for me on a trip meant for six people, then there was no reason to save a place for any of them in the rest of my life.

In the past, I'd waited so long to hear those words. If she'd said them sooner—when they left me behind for the first time, when I first watched the five of them pose for a group photo without me, when I first realized my birthday mattered less to her than Anders's tears—I probably would have gone back. But now, I simply said, "I don't need you to change anymore. Who you love, who you choose, who you stand beside from now on… None of it has anything to do with me."Brielle clenched the ring so tightly that the band dug into her palm, just as it had once dug into mine. "You really don't love me at all anymore?"I was silent for a moment. "I did."Her eyes brightened slightly. But then I added, "Those seven blank cards wore it away, little by little."Brielle didn't leave right away. She stayed in the small town for two weeks.Every day, she showed up at our filming locations. She brought water and checked the vehicles. She quietly took care of all the little things no one notice

Three months later, Brielle finally heard where I was.I'd moved to a small coastal town up north and joined a documentary crew, photographing artisans in remote communities. She traveled through the night and found me beside an old pier.I was wearing a windbreaker, my hair tousled by the ocean breeze, holding up my camera as I photographed an elderly man weaving a fishing net.Brielle stood in the distance and watched me for a long time. It was the first time she'd ever seen me behind a camera that wasn't pointed at the five of them.I was smiling. Not to humor anyone and not because someone had told me to stop ruining the mood. She hadn't seen me smile that freely in years. When the shoot ended, I turned around and saw her. The smile slowly faded from my face."What are you doing here?"Everything Brielle had rehearsed on the way there suddenly deserted her. It took her a long time to speak."Clark, come home."I shook my head. "This is my job.""You can quit." The answer

Over the next week, Brielle searched everywhere she thought I might have gone.No one knew where I was.Her messages gradually shifted from demands to explanations.[Clark, come back.][I can apologize for what happened with the game.][We can still have the wedding.][That ring wasn't meant for Anders.][I already made him give it back.][If you come back, you'll be included in everything from now on.]She stared at that last message for a long time before suddenly realizing how ridiculous it sounded.I'd always been there. They were the ones who had never truly let me in. Now that I'd left, she was finally willing to offer me a place.None of her messages received a response. On the eighth day, Anders came over and placed the ring on the table. "Brielle, aren't we the ones who were supposed to end up together? Before Clark came along, you liked me for years."Brielle looked at the ring. "So what? He's gone now."Anders's voice trembled. "We can start over. The five of u

After her flight landed, Brielle didn't go home. She went straight to my apartment. The door code no longer worked. She knocked for a long time before the landlord finally came upstairs."Looking for Mr. Ortega? He moved out yesterday."Brielle stiffened. "Where did he move to?""I don't know." The landlord handed her a cardboard box. "He said if you came by, I should give you this."Brielle immediately took it. The box was surprisingly light. Inside were all the things she'd given me over the years: a watch that had since been discontinued, a few books, an old sweater, and the camera she'd bought me. She'd given it to me during our second year together."You take great pictures. From now on, you can be in charge of taking all our photos."Back then, I hadn't noticed anything strange about what she'd said. There were six of us. But when she talked about "us," she had meant the five of them.Later, I'd asked her, "What about me?"She'd paused, then grabbed my arm with a laugh.

The next morning, I didn't come back. When Brielle saw that the digital wedding invitations had been deleted, she finally called the wedding planner. "Send the digital invitations to Clark again."There were a few seconds of silence on the other end."Miss Rice, Mr. Ortega officially canceled the wedding last night. All the guests have already been notified."Brielle's brows immediately drew together. "Who gave you permission to cancel it?""Mr. Ortega is the one who signed the contract, and he personally paid all the wedding expenses. He has the right to cancel."Only then did Brielle remember that I'd handled almost everything for the wedding, from the venue to the favors. She'd only glanced at the final budget and complained that I was making everything too complicated."It's just a wedding. We don't need to make such a big deal out of it."For that wedding she thought didn't need to be a big deal, I'd visited more than twenty hotels on my own. I'd sampled more than thirty d

When I wheeled my suitcase out of the hotel, laughter was still drifting from the terrace.Brielle probably thought I was doing what I'd done countless times before—waiting for her to come around and smooth things over.My phone buzzed with a message from her.[You're a grown man. Come back when you're done sulking.]A few minutes later, another message came through.[Anders is drunk. Where did you put the hangover medicine you bought?]I stared at those two messages for a long time before turning off my phone. So even after I'd left, her first thought wasn't to wonder where I'd gone. It was whether I'd remembered to prepare hangover medicine for Anders.By the time I reached the airport, there were forty minutes left before departure. I checked in and dropped off my last suitcase. For seven years, I'd imagined my wedding to Brielle more times than I could count. What her wedding dress would look like. What we'd write on the invitations. What color the centerpieces would be.
