CHAPTER THREE | WRONG PLACE, RIGHT TIME
AVA HAYES The plan is simply, Dante distracts the warriors guarding the border while I run out and later, he'll join me. It is a risky one, but it's all we've got. It would be harder for me to sneak out and that is why he would be doing the distracting. “Are you ready?" I ask Dante, watching him keenly. He looked more than terrified but I know he'll go through with the plan. He bites his lower lips, silently watching the gaurds movements before speaking. “You do know that if we get caught, I'll end up being imprisoned and probably sentenced to death while your father would probably lock you up in the pack house for the rest of your life?" I sigh, taking his hands in mine and giving him a reassuring squeeze. “Trust me, babe, we wouldn't get caught. And if we do, I'll protect you with my life…you are my life and I'll be nothing without you. I love you Dante Rivers." A smile spreads on his face, lighting up his eyes. “I love you too Ava Bianca Hayes." “Okay, let's do this." Giving him a peck, I move to another hiding position, slowly making my way to the border, making sure I don't blow my cover. From my position, I can see Dante hiding in our former location behind an bush, waiting for me to give him signal. I send him a thumbs up and he immediately gets into action. A loud scream echoes from him, catching everyone that surrounds the border. They all rush there to check the problem. Due to the frequent brutal attack we've been getting from rogues this past few weeks, most of the gaurds are either injured or dead given us a greater advantage. Every other thing was pretty easy after Dante successfully distracted them. I run out and keep running until they can't see me and collapse on a tree in the forest, waiting for Dante to join me. He joins me a few minutes later, placing his hands on his knees and panting. “That was really close. I almost got killed." I roll my eyes, standing at my full height for a hug. “Stop being dramatic, babe. Thank you…I love you." I whisper, hugging him tightly. “Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Where are we going now? By the way, when I ran out of the pack, the guards kept saying something about slavers. It sounded pretty serious. I think we should be careful out here." I wave him off, taking his hands and dragging him along with me. “They were only trying to make you come back. Now, we just have to find a pack willing to join us, get married and then, go back to our pack." I squeal in excitement. “Where would we find a pack? You do know we're officially rogues now and are now a threat to any pack we step foot into? How the hell are we going to get them to join us when they'll probably rip our heads off before giving us a chance to explain your brilliant plan." My movements seize, the realization that I didn't think everything through hitting me like a train. “Oh shit! Why didn't we think about this earlier? What the hell are we going to do now? “Ava," Dante calls, eyes roaming the forest fearfully. “Did you hear that?" I'm too busy being caught up in my panic to calm down and check the sound that scared him so much until a spare is thrown at me, it would have torn my head off my body if not for Dante who pushes me out of the way. The spare hits a small tree behind us and we watch with horror filled faces as the tree is sliced off. We are cornered by seven men and from their stance and scent, I immediately knew they ain't werewolves. Slavers. They are slavers and I doubt we would make it out here alive. “Oh shit!" Dante says, punching one of the men that tries to grab him. Using the man's disorientation, we push him out of the way and take to our heels, running as far as our legs can carry us, the slavers hot on our heels. We keep running, not paying attention to our surroundings until an arrow from nowhere hits one of the men chasing us. Like a horror movie in slow motion, Dante and I pause, turning around just in time to watch the man's head fall off, blood splashing everywhere. An agonizing scream comes out of my mouth, echoing around the forest. My hands slowly touch my face, the blood from the now dead man on my hand when I bring it back to my face. A gunshot sounds, followed by multiple others and soon, all the men trying to capture us are lying on the floor, bleeding and dead. We were saved by unknown people but I am not sure if I should be happy or terrified. Dante shakes my shoulders gently, snapping me out of my thoughts. “We just got saved. Why the hell are you fucking crying?" I don't realize I'm crying until he points it out. “They killed them. They…" “Are you fucking crazy? We owe whoever saved us our lives. Do you have any idea what these men would have done to us when we got captured? You'd have been turned into a guinea pig for experiment, dead, half alive. I even heard that some of these men use their female captives as sex slaves. Would you have preferred that? They would have done much worse…" My words hang in my throat when a sword is placed on my neck and a gun is pointed to Dante's temple. I can tell the sword is laced with wolfsbane as the toxic shit burns my skin, creating pain like never before on my neck. Scared to move and inflict more pain on myself, I stay still, tracing the man that has captured us with my eyes. “They are rogues. Execute them."SEBESTIAN I stepped into the forensic office, my anger coiling tight behind my chest. Everything about this case screamed calculated cruelty…and I needed evidence, something solid, to lock Dove away before she spiraled completely out of control.I forced myself to breathe. Keep it together. You're the Alpha. The doctor in charge looked up, adjusting his gloves. He stood, bowed briskly, and said, “Alpha Sebastian, if you’d follow me, please.”I nodded and followed him past rows of cold metal tables. The air smelled faintly of antiseptic and iron. I glanced around, bracing myself.“This way,” he said, opening a curtain. Inside lay the corpse. Draped in a white sheet, there were no signs of forced entry….no fingerprint smudges, no DNA. Nothing. It was… flawless. My jaw clenched.“Look,” the doctor pointed. “Multiple stab wounds. Very precise. The blood was thoroughly cleaned. The victim was given a complete change of clothes before being hanged in public. For everyone to see.”I swall
AVAA cold chill ran down my spine, the kind that makes your skin crawl before your brain catches up. I stopped walking and turned sharply, my eyes sweeping across the shadows of the night. The trees swayed lazily in the breeze, branches casting eerie patterns on the ground. The silence was heavy, too heavy. Something about it didn’t feel right. That feeling again…..the gnawing weight that someone was watching me.I clenched my fists by my side, trying to shake it off. Maybe I was being paranoid. Maybe it was the darkness, the tension, the pressure of everything building up in my chest. But something inside me refused to calm down. One last scan of the area.Nothing moved. No one.Just the trees, the faint sound of wind, and the quiet hum of the palace far off in the distance.I exhaled and turned to head back to the car. The gravel crunched beneath my boots, loud and intrusive. I wanted to run. I wanted to look back again. But I didn’t.Then my phone rang.I jumped. My hand flew to
Ava I rolled on the bed tiredly, my body sinking into the mattress like it wanted to disappear. But my mind wouldn’t let me rest. I sighed in frustration and sat up, brushing my fingers through my hair.Ever since Sebastian left, I hadn’t been able to shake the image of that old man. The one I saw in my dream….or was it a vision? Either way, he wouldn’t leave my thoughts. His eyes, his face, the urgency in his silence… it all felt like more than just a dream. Like a warning.A warning from Dove.I knew it. I could feel it in my bones. She wasn’t working alone. Someone else was helping her. Someone dangerous, someone just as determined. Maybe even more so. But who? Who was pulling strings behind the scenes while Dove played the broken, bitter puppet?Caleb said he saved her from the fire that night. That she ran away from him. But where did she go? What happened after that? And why now? Why did she choose this exact moment to return and cause chaos? Why not years ago?The questions
Sebastian"I’ll take my leave," I said, rising to my feet after spending nearly two hours watching a movie with her after dinner.I didn’t want to go…not really. But I had to.There were too many things I needed to take care of. I couldn’t afford the comfort of just sitting here pretending like nothing was going on. There’s a murderer out there, and Dove… she’s spiraling faster than I expected. If I don’t act quickly, she’s going to do something far worse than what she’s already done.Ava walked me to the door with a smile playing on her lips. She looked lighter tonight. Maybe it was the movie. Or the wine. Or maybe…for the first time in a long time…she felt safe. With me."You’re still going to train me tomorrow, right?" she asked, leaning on the doorframe, hugging her arms close to her body. There was something about the way she asked that made my chest ache. Like she needed something to anchor her. Someone."Of course," I said, forcing a grin, but even I could hear how strained
AVA'S POV"You're not coming in with me, are you?" I asked him, wishing deeply that he would say, No, I'm coming in with you.He turned to face me, letting go of the steering wheel. "Do you want me to come in?"Fuck. He turned the tables on me.I sighed and gave him a tight smile. If I said yes, he’d know I wanted him to stay. And I did. I didn’t want to be alone tonight…not after what I just encountered. The Queen Dowager’s eyes… they still haunted me.But could I really handle his presence? His presence that made me forget the world even existed outside the one I shared with him.And if I said no… he’d leave. And I’d be alone again."If you want to," I said quickly, opening the door. I flipped the decision back to him. It was his move now. I hoped he would stay."Okay," he said just as I slammed the door shut.I heard the engine ignite. What the heck? He’s leaving?I rolled my eyes hard as I watched him slowly turn the car around. My heart sank. I didn’t know why... but I was alread
NARRATOR’S POV "Do you have to do that?" Dante asked as he stepped inside, his voice rising with frustration.Dove didn’t flinch. She didn’t even look up. Her long fingers kept tapping the side of the wooden drum in rhythm, echoing softly through the stone cave. Her gown dragged behind her like mist, and her expression remained unreadable."What do you mean?" she asked, still focused on the sound her fingers created."You killed a man, Dove. That old man hanging on the tree? That wasn’t part of the plan," he snapped, stepping closer. She chuckled lightly, coldly. “C’mon Dante, we needed to make a move already. Sebastian is too comfortable. This will shake him. Push him.”"Push him into what?" Dante’s voice deepened, frustration burning beneath his skin. "Into a war? Into another bloodbath?”“He’ll come to his senses,” she muttered.Dante grabbed her hand, firm, stopping her fingers mid-drum. She looked up at him then, annoyed.“But by any chance,” he said slowly, searching her eyes,
