CHAPTER THREE | WRONG PLACE, RIGHT TIME

AVA HAYES

The plan is simply, Dante distracts the warriors guarding the border while I run out and later, he'll join me. It is a risky one, but it's all we've got.

It would be harder for me to sneak out and that is why he would be doing the distracting.

“Are you ready?" I ask Dante, watching him keenly.

He looked more than terrified but I know he'll go through with the plan.

He bites his lower lips, silently watching the gaurds movements before speaking. “You do know that if we get caught, I'll end up being imprisoned and probably sentenced to death while your father would probably lock you up in the pack house for the rest of your life?"

I sigh, taking his hands in mine and giving him a reassuring squeeze. “Trust me, babe, we wouldn't get caught. And if we do, I'll protect you with my life…you are my life and I'll be nothing without you. I love you Dante Rivers."

A smile spreads on his face, lighting up his eyes. “I love you too Ava Bianca Hayes."

“Okay, let's do this."

Giving him a peck, I move to another hiding position, slowly making my way to the border, making sure I don't blow my cover.

From my position, I can see Dante hiding in our former location behind an bush, waiting for me to give him signal. I send him a thumbs up and he immediately gets into action.

A loud scream echoes from him, catching everyone that surrounds the border. They all rush there to check the problem.

Due to the frequent brutal attack we've been getting from rogues this past few weeks, most of the gaurds are either injured or dead given us a greater advantage.

Every other thing was pretty easy after Dante successfully distracted them. I run out and keep running until they can't see me and collapse on a tree in the forest, waiting for Dante to join me.

He joins me a few minutes later, placing his hands on his knees and panting. “That was really close. I almost got killed."

I roll my eyes, standing at my full height for a hug. “Stop being dramatic, babe. Thank you…I love you." I whisper, hugging him tightly.

“Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Where are we going now? By the way, when I ran out of the pack, the guards kept saying something about slavers. It sounded pretty serious. I think we should be careful out here."

I wave him off, taking his hands and dragging him along with me. “They were only trying to make you come back. Now, we just have to find a pack willing to join us, get married and then, go back to our pack." I squeal in excitement.

“Where would we find a pack? You do know we're officially rogues now and are now a threat to any pack we step foot into? How the hell are we going to get them to join us when they'll probably rip our heads off before giving us a chance to explain your brilliant plan."

My movements seize, the realization that I didn't think everything through hitting me like a train. “Oh shit! Why didn't we think about this earlier? What the hell are we going to do now?

“Ava," Dante calls, eyes roaming the forest fearfully. “Did you hear that?"

I'm too busy being caught up in my panic to calm down and check the sound that scared him so much until a spare is thrown at me, it would have torn my head off my body if not for Dante who pushes me out of the way.

The spare hits a small tree behind us and we watch with horror filled faces as the tree is sliced off.

We are cornered by seven men and from their stance and scent, I immediately knew they ain't werewolves.

Slavers. They are slavers and I doubt we would make it out here alive.

“Oh shit!" Dante says, punching one of the men that tries to grab him.

Using the man's disorientation, we push him out of the way and take to our heels, running as far as our legs can carry us, the slavers hot on our heels.

We keep running, not paying attention to our surroundings until an arrow from nowhere hits one of the men chasing us.

Like a horror movie in slow motion, Dante and I pause, turning around just in time to watch the man's head fall off, blood splashing everywhere.

An agonizing scream comes out of my mouth, echoing around the forest. My hands slowly touch my face, the blood from the now dead man on my hand when I bring it back to my face.

A gunshot sounds, followed by multiple others and soon, all the men trying to capture us are lying on the floor, bleeding and dead.

We were saved by unknown people but I am not sure if I should be happy or terrified.

Dante shakes my shoulders gently, snapping me out of my thoughts. “We just got saved. Why the hell are you fucking crying?"

I don't realize I'm crying until he points it out. “They killed them. They…"

“Are you fucking crazy? We owe whoever saved us our lives. Do you have any idea what these men would have done to us when we got captured? You'd have been turned into a guinea pig for experiment, dead, half alive. I even heard that some of these men use their female captives as sex slaves. Would you have preferred that? They would have done much worse…"

My words hang in my throat when a sword is placed on my neck and a gun is pointed to Dante's temple.

I can tell the sword is laced with wolfsbane as the toxic shit burns my skin, creating pain like never before on my neck.

Scared to move and inflict more pain on myself, I stay still, tracing the man that has captured us with my eyes.

“They are rogues. Execute them."

SEBASTIANI drive into the courtyard of the newly built mansion, heart pounding. The headlights carve through the late morning haze. I park the car. Ava sits beside me, arms crossed, anger etched into every line of her posture. Her voice is sharp. “What the heck is this place?”I meet her eyes in the rearview mirror. “It’s heavily guarded and monitored. No one can have access.”Her lip curls. “You mean you want to lock me up?”I turn off the engine. “I’m not locking you up. I’m just trying to protect you.”She shoves open her door. “Protect me from what exactly?” she yells, stepping out onto the gravel.I follow. “From everything. Your home was invaded. So was mine.”Her fists clench. “I can manage myself.”“No,” I say firmly. “You’re under my watch from now on.”She scoffs. The muscles in her arms flex. “You can’t do that,” she mutters, voice low.“I can,” I responded quietly. I stand tall. “And I will.”I opened the door of the house. “Come on.” I step away and nearly lose my breath

AVA“I’m sorry, but I need to talk to you,” his voice came again…loud, firm, laced with that same frustrating mix of concern and command he always carried.Sebastian.He’d been outside my door for hours now.I’d told the guards to keep him out, made it clear I didn’t want to see him. But he was the Alpha. There was only so much disobedience they could manage before they were forced to let him through.I saw him drive in.And I locked my door.I didn’t care that I was Luna.I didn’t care that he could easily force his way inside if he truly wanted to.I was done. The argument from yesterday kept looping in my head like a curse. His words, the guilt, the confession. The moment Dove returned, everything fell apart. It wasn’t just the fact that she was alive…it was the way he reacted. Like she still owned a piece of him. Like I never mattered at all.I told myself I was just a replacement. And maybe that was always the truth.“Ava,” he called again, softer this time. “Can you let me in?”

SEBASTIANCaleb wiped the blood at the corner of his mouth like it was nothing. Like it wasn’t a reminder of the chaos he’d stirred.“I’m done here,” Ava snapped, voice cutting through the stillness like a whip. Then she turned and stormed out of the building.I chased after her without thinking. My legs moved on instinct, but my heart beat in panic."Ava..." I called. She spun around so fast I almost crashed into her."What?" she snapped, her eyes blazing."You knew she was alive, didn’t you?""I just figured it out. Pieced it together over time.""And you're getting ready to discharge me now?"That hit harder than any blow Caleb could’ve landed."What do you mean by that?" I asked, my throat tight. She stepped closer, jabbing a finger into my chest. “You said I was her replacement. Isn’t that what you told me the first day I entered this goddamn pack? When you forced me to marry you?”"I—""You what?""I didn’t mean it like that.""You didn’t fight for her," she threw back, louder n

AVAI already knew things wouldn’t sum up.Not in this palace. Not with these people. Not even with Caleb. And Jatina? She had loyalty stitched into her silence, but silence wasn’t the same as trust. As long as she kept hiding the truth, she wasn’t on my side either. The palace walls whispered more than they spoke. And I was drowning in a language made of half-truths and glances that meant too much. That’s when the letter came.Folded twice, tucked beneath my pillow like a secret lover’s confession. No name. Just shaky handwriting that read:“Meet me. The old stables. Midnight.”That was it.No explanation.Just like all the other times…times that always led to bruises and blood or some new discovery that cracked the world open wider. I’d lost count of how many letters had tried to lure me to my doom. But this one... this one made my pulse hitch. Because despite everything, I went.I told Jatina.I had to tell someone.“I’m meeting someone,” I said, pretending to adjust my scarf in t

  • The Moon Goddess's Mistake: Wrong Mate At The Wrong Time   CHAPTER THIRTY ONE: WHO KILLED HER

SEBASTIAN How can I tell Ava the truth? How can I ever look her in the eyes and say?I lied to her.I shouldn’t be Alpha. I shouldn’t be Luna’s mate. Hell, I shouldn’t even be breathing after what I’ve done. The weight of it drags on my spine, invisible but crushing. I deserve worse. Much worse.I cut across the west garden, the one where Dove always sat to paint when the morning mist blanketed the roses. She said the stillness helped her see better. “The world speaks louder when you stop trying to talk over it,” she used to say, her voice soft, her eyes knowing too much. That was the last place she ever painted. The portrait still rests in the gallery half-finished. A smear of red across the canvas where her brush must have slipped or… no, I don’t let myself finish the thought. Not out loud.I stood there, at the edge of her favorite bench, hands in my coat pockets, head bowed. Her presence lingers in the way the leaves sway slower in this part of the garden, like they’re grievin

  • The Moon Goddess's Mistake: Wrong Mate At The Wrong Time   CHAPTER THIRTY: BEGINNING OF LIES

AVAI sat on the edge of the hospital bed, the sterile scent of antiseptics clinging to the air. My fingers trembled as I wrapped my arms around my knees, trying to steady my racing heart. The word "Luna" echoed in my mind, not as a title of honor, but as a curse. The doctor's words replayed in my head: "You suffered from a traumatizing experience". He suggested I speak to Sebastian to lessen the burden. But how could I? He was part of the reason I was here.I needed answers. My phone was missing, likely left behind in the kitchen during the chaos. I had to contact my father, to let him know I was alive, just in case...The door creaked open, and Sebastian stepped in, hands in his pockets, eyes filled with concern."Where are you going?" he asked, his voice soft."Home," I replied, avoiding his gaze."The doctor hasn't discharged you.""I don't care."He sighed, "Fine, let's go.""My home, not yours."He looked taken aback. "What?""I'll go to my mansion, the Queen's chamber.""It
