Chapter 2

Author: Ladywoffie
At breakfast the next morning, my mother Selena casually mentioned to Dad, "Once Lena goes back to the academy, I'm thinking of knocking out the storage room wall to expand Mia's closet. She keeps getting more clothes—one wardrobe just isn't enough."

Father Karl chewed his bread and nodded. "Fine. Have the pack craftsmen come measure it later."

Mia nibbled on her spoon and said quietly, "Mom, really, it's fine. I don't have that many clothes."

"Not many?" My brother Leon cut in, then grinned and ruffled her hair. "Those sets from last week aren't even unboxed yet. And that dress I picked for her—she said all her classmates thought it looked great."

But Garrett shook his head. "I still think that white dress I picked for her looked better."

Leon thought that was ridiculous. "Garrett, you have zero taste!"

Garrett shot back immediately. "Like you're any better? Maybe Mia's classmates at school laughed at how ugly she dressed, and she lied to spare your feelings."

The two of them started arguing over which outfit looked better on Mia. Dad watched them and chuckled, telling them to keep it down.

I sat across from them, silently eating my cold bowl of cereal.

Nobody asked if I wanted to go back to the academy. Nobody asked where I'd go after graduation.

They just needed me gone.

Once I left, they'd erase the last trace of my existence in this house too.

That afternoon, Garrett went into town to pick up my diploma.

But when he came back, there was no diploma in his hands—just several large cloth bags stuffed with every kind of popular snack.

He carried them over to me. "Lena, I bought a ton of snacks."

I flipped through the bags. They were packed with sweets.

I'd been with Garrett for three years. He'd always known I had to watch my figure, that I only ate dried meat and never touched sweets. These were all Mia's favorites.

"None of these are what I like."

I looked at him.

Garrett froze for a second, then scratched the back of his head awkwardly. "My bad. When I was buying them I thought they were your favorites."

I pushed down the cold feeling rising in my chest and asked, "Where's my diploma?"

Garrett's face shifted. "Shit! The line for snacks was too long—I completely forgot!"

I looked at him calmly. Not surprised.

He patted my shoulder to soothe me. "It's fine. I'll go get it tomorrow."

Before I could even respond, he'd already turned away and hollered up the stairs. "Mia! Come down! I got you your favorite cookies!"

I said nothing. I turned and headed for the door, planning to get the diploma myself.

At the entryway, I heard Mia running down the stairs, her voice timid. "Garrett, is my sister mad?"

Garrett tore open the packaging carelessly. "Nah, don't worry. I'll grab it tomorrow. She's not that petty. Come eat."

I didn't look back. I shut the door behind me.

After picking up my diploma in town, I passed by my parents' bedroom on the way back. The door was cracked open.

My mother's voice drifted out. "Honey, have you noticed Lena seems upset lately? She barely talks since we moved in."

My father's voice followed, heavy with exhaustion. "She's always like that. Never talks to us. But right now Mia's health is critical. We don't have the energy to cater to Lena's moods too. Once 'that thing' is ready…"

I didn't listen to the rest. I stood in the cold wind for a moment, then turned and quietly left the hallway.

So it wasn't that nobody noticed I was hurting.

They noticed. They just didn't think I mattered.

That night, I sat on the old leather cushion in the basement storage room, packing my bags.

The door creaked open. Mia walked in holding a pretty gift box.

"Lena, this is for you."

She lifted the lid. Inside was a pink dress.

Classic Mia style.

"I think it'd look great on you." Mia watched me carefully. "Actually… everyone's really happy you came back. Really."

I looked at that pink dress and stayed silent. Didn't say a word.

Because everyone loved her, she believed everyone loved me too.

Even though I'd been overlooked by this family again and again.

The air in the storage room was dead silent. Mia grew more and more awkward in my silence. She stood there fidgeting for a while, then finally lowered her head and slunk away.

The next morning, Mia's condition took a sharp turn. She spiked a high fever.

The whole family panicked. When they learned Mia had been in my cold, damp basement storage room the night before, my brother Leon and my mother Selena's expressions changed instantly. Leon demanded, "The basement is freezing—why would you let her stay down there? You know she's always been frail!"

Leon glared at me.

My mother's eyes went red as she accused me. "If you'd spared even a sliver of care for your sister, she wouldn't be like this. What is wrong with you—"

Garrett stood to the side tending to Mia, and when he looked back at me, his eyes were full of disappointment and blame.

In that moment, looking at this family, the last bit of warmth in my heart went out completely.

Then my phone lit up.

A encrypted message from the Silver Creek pack.

"Miss Lena, we'll send a pickup car tomorrow night. We'll be waiting for you at Snowcedar Outpost No. 3 at the Silver Creek Pass on the border. We'll have the highest-honor warrior badge ready to welcome you into our ranks."

Hearing their words, I shook my head on instinct."No—impossible—"My mother held Mia up, explaining weakly."The seal on this necklace runs too deep. It should've taken at least seven days to fully awaken it. Your father and I tried, but we couldn't speed it up. We planned to give you the incomplete necklace today. But Mia said if it couldn't be the most perfect ancestral power, then the necklace lost its meaning.""So from the day you came back, against everyone's protests, she used her own wolf to nourish that final seal."Mia's small hand caught my sleeve. She spoke."Sister, that night, I knew you were angry. I wanted to please you, so I brought you that dress. But you said you don't like pink."I nodded, forcing the words out."Yeah, Mia. I'm a warrior. I can't wear dresses, and I don't like pink—""No."She shook her head."Sister, when you were little—before you went to the warrior academy and went through all that brutal training—your closet was full of pink dresses.""Later,

"This is… mine?"I couldn't believe it. I had to confirm."This was saved for you, Lena."Dad stepped forward, his eyes red-rimmed. "This is the finest ancestral necklace in the Sullivan family. You're our strongest warrior. Of course it belongs to you."I didn't believe it. I thought it was just another absurd excuse to keep me from leaving. But when I stared at that necklace hovering in midair, my breath caught completely. It was stunning. It radiated a purity and majesty that made my chest ache.In my whole life, I'd never seen anything so breathtaking, so beautiful."It's too ancient. The seal runs too deep."My mother's voice was weak and trembling, tears in her eyes. "To fully activate it, to awaken its ancestral power, it has to be infused and nourished with the wolf energy of the closest kin."Wolf energy…Those words hit me like a sledgehammer to the skull. My head snapped up. For the first time, I really looked at my parents. That's when I noticed—my mother's once full, beaut

I looked at the ebony box in my mother's trembling hands and felt nothing but mockery. This was the gift I'd wanted most on Legacy Day—and they were only giving it to me after I'd decided to leave. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her hands shaking violently as she held the box out to me, her voice thick with tears."Lena, it came a little late, but it was absolutely worth it, sweetheart. We never forgot you—"I turned my head away. I didn't reach for it. I gently pushed it back."I don't need any late compensation."I threw the words down and turned to head for the pass.My mother's grief clenched my heart just as tight—but I told myself I had to push through it.Leon called after me. "Lena! Wait!"I looked back. Leon grabbed the box from Mom and shoved it into my arms."This isn't some late compensation! At least open it first! Just one look! Why do you never let us finish talking!"I never let them finish talking? Those words cut into my heart like a dull knife.I froze in place. Twenty ye

I gripped the steering wheel, headlights slicing through the blizzard as I drove down the silent highway toward the Silver Creek pack. The wind howled outside the window, but my thoughts drifted back—way back.I used to live in a family that was unbelievably warm.Back then, Dad would forge a hunting knife with his own hands just for me. He'd hoist me onto his shoulders and brag to the whole pack that I was his proudest little wolf daughter, that I'd inherit his honor and become a great warrior.Mom would hand-sew me warm sweaters and hum ancient lullabies at my bedside late into the night. And my brother Leon—he always saved me the tastiest parts of the kill and carried me on his back, racing and playing across the snowfields.Until Mia was born. So beautiful. So fragile. At first, that sickly, frail little thing would just timidly follow behind me, sweetly calling me "Lena."But somewhere along the way, she used her weakness and her tears to slowly devour and steal everything that wa

For days on end, the whole family's attention was pinned on Mia at the hospital. The tenth day after we moved in was my three-year anniversary with Garrett.I'd confirmed the time with him two days ahead. He'd replied fast back then: "Relax. A three-year anniversary? Of course I remember."Saturday afternoon, I dug through that tiny basement storage room and found the only cardigan I owned that wasn't pilled.I spent half an hour in front of that cracked little round mirror in the storage room, putting on light makeup, then sat quietly on the edge of the bed waiting for him.But the whole afternoon, my phone stayed silent. It wasn't until six in the evening that it buzzed. A message from my mother. In the photo, Father Karl was holding Mia's hand. My brother Leon was peeling fruit beside her. And Garrett was hovering at her bedside, his face tight with worry.Everyone was gathered around Mia, the warm yellow light making the whole scene look unbearably cozy.My mother sent one line: "M
