LOGINThe Alpha of the Alphas came into the territory at noon and the whole of the square was full.
There were four hundred wolves of the Circle Pack and the whole of the line and the whole of the twelve from the room and the eleven the keeper had hidden and the whole of the ones the east had taken. There were the eleven Alphas of the north and the keeper of the east and the keeper of the room and the whole of the Council of Alphas behind him.
And there was a table in the middle of the square with a paper on it and a seal and a pen.
The Alpha of the Alphas stood at the table and put his staff down on it.
"Alpha," he said. "The Council of Alphas has ruled on the whole of it and the whole of it is going to be named today." He picked up the paper. "The Council names this territory the Circle Pack and the land of the Circle Pack is the land of the Palouse and the mill and the east field and the circle in the trees and the whole of the west line and the whole of the north line. And the Alpha of the Circle Pack is Wren Halloran and her mate is Elias and the whole of the line is the pack."
The square roared.
And then the Alpha of the Alphas brought his staff down.
"There is a second thing," he said. "The Council has ruled that the Circle Pack is not a pack under the Council. It is a pack beside the Council. The Circle Pack holds the circle and the circle is the heart of the territory and the whole of the territory is the line and the line is the pack. And the whole of it is going to stand in the circle at the full moon and the whole of it is going to be finished."
I stood in the square.
"Then the whole of it is finished," I said.
The Alpha of the Alphas put the paper on the table and put the seal on it and signed it and handed the pen to me.
I signed it.
And then the whole of the pack came forward.
It was Thomas the old wolf with the hoe and Mrs. Pike and Harold and the Corrigan boys and the whole of the co-op men and the whole of the farmers from the west line and the whole of the ones who had been cast out and the whole of the ones who had stood with the Council.
And then the whole of the line came forward.
Ruth of the Riverside pack and Ada of Boise and Ada Kessler in her chair and Hannah and Arthur Renn and Clara Renn and Ilse the grandmother and Ilse the granddaughter and Mary the keeper of the room and the whole of the twelve from the room and the whole of the eleven the keeper had hidden and the whole of the ones the east had taken.
And then the whole of the eleven Alphas of the north came forward.
And then the keeper of the east came forward with his arm in a sling.
And then the Alpha of the Alphas came forward and put his hand on my shoulder.
"Alpha," he said. "The whole of the Council has ruled and the whole of it is finished. And there is one thing the Council has to say to you that the Council has never said to a wolf in two hundred years." He put his hand on his chest. "The Council of Alphas has been wrong. The Council has been wrong since 1802 and the Council has been wrong about the room and the line and the silver and the whole of it. And the Council is not going to be wrong again."
I looked at him.
"Then the Council is going to have to prove it," I said.
"The Council is going to prove it," the Alpha of the Alphas said. "At the full moon. In the circle. In front of the whole of the territories."
He went out.
The square was quiet.
And then Elias came and stood beside me.
"Alpha," he said.
"Keeper," I said.
"The whole of it is named," he said. "The whole of the territory and the whole of the line and the whole of the pack."
"The whole of it is named." I put my hand on his face. "And there is a thing I have to do before the full moon."
"What thing?"
"I have to name the Luna," I said.
He looked at me.
"Wren," he said.
"The whole of the pack has an Alpha and the whole of the pack does not have a Luna," I said. "And the Circle Pack is a new pack and the whole of it is going to have a Luna and the Luna is going to be the wolf who holds the circle with the Alpha and the whole of it is going to be named at the next full moon."
He stood in the square.
"You are asking me to be the Luna," he said.
"I am asking you to be the Luna of the Circle Pack," I said. "Not the keeper. The Luna. The wolf who stands beside the Alpha and holds the whole of it with her."
He looked at me for a long moment.
"I have been the cursed wolf for seventeen years," he said. "And I have been the keeper for a month. And the whole of it has been a rank that the Council gave me and a curse that the founders gave me and a circle that the ground gave me." He put his hand on my face. "And the Luna is not a thing that is given. The Luna is a thing that is chosen."
"Then I am choosing you," I said.
He put his forehead against mine.
"Then I am going to be the Luna," he said.
The square roared.
And then June came up beside me with her hands on her stomach and her face white.
"Wren," she said. "The whole of the line has been talking and the whole of it has decided."
"What has the whole of it decided?" I said.
"The whole of the line is going to stand in the circle at the full moon and the whole of it is going to let go." She put her hand on my arm. "And the whole of the line is going to name the Luna at the same time and the Luna is Elias and the whole of it is going to be done in one night."
I stood in the square.
"Then the whole of it is going to be done in one night," I said.
And then the whole of the square went quiet.
There was a wolf at the gate.
He was young and he was tall and he had a shaved head and a gray coat and he was not a wolf of the territory and he was not a wolf of the Council.
He came into the square and stopped in front of the table and looked at the paper on it.
"Alpha," he said. "My name is Corrigan and I am the brother of the Gamma of the north and I have come to challenge for the Alpha position."
I stood in the square.
"What?" I said.
"I am the brother of the Gamma of the north," he said. "And the whole of the north has been stripped of its rank and its name and its territory. And the whole of the north is going to be given to the Circle Pack at the full moon." He put his hand on his chest. "And I am not going to be a wolf of a pack that was given to a wheat pack by a Council. So I am challenging for the Alpha position."
The square was silent.
And then the Alpha of the Alphas came back into the square.
"Alpha," he said. "The challenge is lawful. The old law says a wolf may challenge for a rank in front of the whole of the pack. And the whole of it is going to be decided by the pack."
I stood in the square.
"Then the whole of it is going to be decided by the pack," I said.
And then the whole of the north came down the ridge road.
It was the whole of the north. It was four thousand wolves and the whole of it was in the north field and the whole of it was waiting.
And in front of them there was a wolf on a horse.
It was the speaker of the east.
"Alpha," she called. "The whole of the east has come to the challenge. And the whole of the east has come to see the whole of the line lose the whole of it."
I stood in the square.
"Then the whole of it is going to be a challenge and a war," I said.
And then the whole of the north roared.
The whole of the mill yard was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. It was the first of May and the wheat was up and the whole of the east field was green and the whole of the west line was green and the whole of the north field was green. And the whole of the mill was the whole of the keeper's house with the door that closed and the window that opened and the chair by the window and the rug on the floor and the crib in the corner. And in the crib there was a child. She was three months old and she had red hair and amber eyes and she was awake and she was making a sound that was not a word and the whole of her was the whole of the line.I picked her up.“Ilse,” I said. “The whole of the it is the whole of the it.”She made the sound again. And then Elias came in from the yard with his shirt sleeves rolled up and his hair in his eyes and his hands dirty from the fence line.“Wren,” he said. “The whole of the it is
The whole of the circle was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the mark. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the record. The whole of the line went up to the pack house in the morning and the whole of the them came into the Alpha's office and the whole of the them sat down at the long table and the whole of the them had the register and the crates and the whole of the it.The whole of the record was on the table. It was the new record. It was the record of the whole of the packs and it had been bound in leather by Arthur Renn and it had a brass clasp and the whole of it was blank. And it was waiting for the whole of the it.“Alpha,” Arthur Renn said. “The whole of the it is the whole of the record. And the whole of the record is the whole of the line.” He put his hand on the book. “And the whole of the it is going to be written by the whole of the it.”I sat down at the head of the table.“Then write the whole of
The whole of the circle was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the mark.It was not a day and it was not a night and it was not a trial. It was a thing that happened in the circle in the spring with the whole of the line around it and the whole of the ground under it.The whole of the it came at dusk on the first full moon after the trial. The whole of the line came into the circle and the whole of the pack and the whole of the territories and the whole of the east and the whole of the them stood around the flat stone and the whole of the them put their hands on the stone. And then Ada of the north came into the circle. She was old and she had a cane and a shawl and she was the keeper and she had been the keeper for eighty-five years.“Alpha,” she said. “The whole of the it is the whole of the mark.”“The whole of the it is the whole of the mark,” I said. She put the
The whole of the packs was signed and the whole of the line was one and the whole of it was the whole of the ground. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the trial. It was held in the circle in the trees in the spring when the snow was gone and the wheat was up and the whole of the east field was green. The whole of the Council came and the whole of the territories came and the whole of the east came and the whole of the north came and the whole of the line came and the whole of the it was in the east field. And in the middle of the circle there was a table and seven chairs and the whole of the Alphas of the whole of the packs sat in the chairs.I sat in the middle chair with Ilse in my arms and Elias beside me.And in front of the table there was a wolf.It was Silas and he was in a gray coat and his hands were tied and his face was gray and the whole of him was the whole of the it.“Silas,” I said.“Alpha,” he said.“The whole of the it is the whole of the trial,” I said. “
The whole of the circle roared and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. And then the whole of the it was the whole of the whole of the it.The Alpha of the Alphas stood on the flat stone with his staff in his hand and the whole of him was the whole of the it."Alpha," he said. "The whole of the it is the whole of the line and the whole of the line is the whole of the ground and the whole of the ground is the whole of the territories." He put his staff on the stone. "And the whole of the territories is not the whole of the Council and the whole of the Council is not the whole of the territories. The whole of the territories is the whole of the line."I stood in the circle."The whole of the it is the whole of the line," I said."The whole of the it is the whole of the line," the Alpha of the Alphas said. "And the whole of the line is the whole of the packs." He put his hand on his chest. "And the whole of the packs is going
The whole of the circle was quiet and the whole of the it was the whole of the line and the whole of the it was the whole of the ground. And then the wind came up.It came out of the trees and it came across the circle and the whole of the it was not the wind of January and the whole of the it was not the wind of the snow.It was warm and it smelled of pine and cedar and the inside of a cedar chest and the whole of it was the whole of the it.I stood on the flat stone with Ilse in my arms. And then I heard it.It was a voice and it was quiet and it came out of the wind and the whole of it was the whole of the it.It said: Wren.I stood in the circle.“Mama,” I said. The whole of the circle was silent. And then the voice came again. It said: I am sorry.I sat down on the flat stone.“Mama,” I said. The voice came out of the wind and the whole of it was warm.It said: I did the whole of the it the wrong way. I kept the whole of the it in a box and I paid the rent and I kept you out of t
