Chapter 6 — Do I Know You

They let me see him two days later, and only because Eleanor asked for me by name.

I stood outside his door for a full minute before I made myself open it, my hand flat against the wood, rehearsing without meaning to. Hi. Too casual. Damien. Too much, maybe, for a hospital room with his mother somewhere down the hall. I settled on nothing at all, in the end, and pushed the door open before I could talk myself out of it a second time.

He was propped up against the pillo

For three days, I didn't tell anyone else.Zoe knew. Zoe was the only one who knew, and she'd earned that by not saying a single one of the things I could see her wanting to say: not what are you going to do, not does he need to know, not any version of the question that assumed I already had an answer waiting.I didn't have an answer. I had a small, cold thought that kept surfacing at inconvenient times, in the shower, on the train, in the middle of typing an email about someone else's expense report, and the thought was this:He doesn't get to forget all of it and still get to choose. It wasn't a kind thought. I knew that. I sat with it anyway, turned it over, examined the shape of my own anger instead of flinching away from it the way I usually did with feelings that weren't tidy or professional or easy to explain to someone else.Three years of being careful. One night of finally not being careful. And now the entire weight of what came after was going to land on me alone, in a bo

Zoe came over Thursday night with a bag of takeout and found me sitting on my bathroom floor instead of at the kitchen table, my back against the tub, staring at nothing."Okay," she said, crouching down slowly, all the teasing gone out of her voice. "Talk to me."I need you to go to the pharmacy. For what?I looked at her. I watched her face change as she worked it out on her own, faster than I'd managed to say it out loud.Nadia.Please.She didn't argue. She didn't lecture me about the timeline or ask the obvious question about whose it was, not yet, not in that moment, and I loved her fiercely for that small mercy in the middle of everything else falling apart. She was back in eleven minutes, a paper bag pressed into my hands, her own face doing the careful, controlled thing faces do when someone is trying very hard not to let you see how frightened they are on your behalf."You don't have to do this alone," she said. "I'm right here.""I know."I went into the bathroom alone. The

The Calloway file came back to me Monday morning with someone else's initials in the corner.I stood at my desk holding it for a full minute before I understood what I was looking at. Grace's handwriting, not mine, on a contract I had built from nothing over three weeks. A small thing. The kind of small thing that meant nothing on its own and everything once you noticed the pattern underneath it.By Wednesday, the pattern had a name. You've been moved to general admin support, HR told me, not quite meeting my eyes, sliding a printed memo across the desk like it was something she'd rather not be holding either. "Effective immediately. It's a lateral move, same pay grade."On whose instruction? It's a recommendation from the recovery team. Reduced stress exposure for Mr Hart during reintegration. Familiar-but-distant faces. She said familiar-but-distant like it was a real category of person and not a sentence someone had clearly written with me specifically in mind. "It's not permanent.

Hi. Too casual. Damien. Too much, maybe, for a hospital room with his mother somewhere down the hall. I settled on nothing at all, in the end, and pushed the door open before I could talk myself out of it a second time.He was propped up against the pillows, a bandage at his hairline, color back in his face, looking so much like himself that something in my chest loosened before I'd even fully crossed the threshold. He turned his head at the sound of the door.I watched his eyes find me. Watched them move over my face the way you'd look at a room you were checking for something familiar.I held my breath. I let myself, for one full second, believe.Hi, he said, polite, careful, the voice of a man being gracious to a stranger. "I'm sorry, do I kn

  • The Night He Forgot, The Twins She Kept   Chapter 5: The Call

I woke to an empty chair across the table and cold light coming through the window.Damien was gone. His jacket was gone. The whisky glass, still half full, sat exactly where he'd left it hours before, and for one disoriented second I thought I'd dreamed the entire night until I saw the burgundy dress still draped over the second chair and knew I hadn't.My phone showed six missed calls. All from Richard.I called back with my hands not quite steady, and the moment he picked up, I understood two things at once: something had happened, and he already knew where to find me.Nadia. His voice was wrong. Richard Hart's voice was never wrong. "Damien's been in an accident. St. Aldric's, on Fifth. I need you to come."I don't remember getting my shoes on. I remember the lobby, and the marble too bright, and the drive over feeling like it took either four minutes or forty; I genuinely couldn't tell you which. The hospital corridor outside the private wing was already full when I arrived: Elea

  • The Night He Forgot, The Twins She Kept   Chapter 4 — What The City Looks Like At Midnight

It was Damien.Jacket over one arm, a glass of whisky he had clearly not finished, the look of a man who had spent four hours being exactly who everyone needed him to be and was now running on the last of what that required. He stopped in the doorway when he saw me, like he hadn't entirely expected the room to still be occupied."I thought everyone had gone," he said."Almost," I said. "Just finishing up."He came in anyway and set his glass on the small table near the door. He looked at the window for a moment, at the city pressed against the glass, low and bright and indifferent, and then he looked at the chair across from me."Can I sit?" he said.I looked it up properly. In three years of working for Damien Hart, I had never once heard him ask permission for anything. He made decisions. He issued instructions. He moved through rooms with the settled certainty of a man who had never had to wonder whether he was welcome anywhere."Of course," I said.He sat down and leaned forward w
