Chapter 1

Justine's POV

I quit the live stream.

I stared at the table full of food, and yet, the first thought that came into my mind was that the food was getting cold and I had to reheat it.

I struggled to lift my head and stared blankly at the frantically flashing red dots on the security cameras.

Back then, my husband, Mitch Cooley, had been worried that I'd try something stupid again and installed CCTVs all throughout the house to keep an eye on my safety. He even installed an alarm system that would ring if I tried to sabotage anything.

He would cross 5,000 miles just to find me if he realized that I was missing from the cameras, abandoning projects worth billions of dollars overseas. But now, the cameras only felt like countless prying eyes fixed on me.

I couldn't stop trembling as I smashed dozens of the cameras to pieces.

But half an hour passed, then an hour, then two. My phone still remained silent as though it had already lost its function.

When Mitch finally came home, he saw the mess on the floor and went to grab a blanket before draping it over my shoulders.

I looked at his finger, with the red mole on the ring finger, and thought of the profile photo from the live stream earlier.

I couldn't hold back the anger anymore and demanded with bloodshot eyes, "Don't you have some explaining to do?"

Mitch was stunned for a moment. However, he didn't panic or get flustered like one would when they got caught red-handed.

"It was me," he admitted.

Those three words made the tears pooling in my eyes stream down my face like a dam had broken.

"How could you do this to me? Why did you have to lie to me about someone's death?" I demanded.

Ever since my ex-boyfriend, Arwin Foster, died in the car crash, his family had pinned the blame all on me and told me to kill myself to atone for my "sins". They accused me of being heartless and said that he would never have died in the crash if he wasn't distracted while driving after I told him I was breaking up with him.

I was haunted by their insults and curses and could barely sleep at night. I'd finally pulled through the darkest time of my life, but now, I was told that the three people who were the closest to me had betrayed me a long time ago.

I pressed my hand against my heart and felt a wave of suffocation washing over me.

Mitch saw what was happening and picked me up in his arms to feed me my meds. Then, he took a deep breath.

"I know you're suffering now. But instead of having two people suffer, it would be better off for you to just bear the suffering on your own.

"Lexie is frail and weak. She can't take your antics. Besides, it's not like we'd affected you in any way."

I was completely frozen in shock. Then, I slapped him hard in the face. Yet, I couldn't stop laughing as tears continued streaming down my face.

"Your love for each other is truly enviable, then!"

So, Lexie Moyer deserved to be pampered just because he thought of her as frail and weak? And yet, it was a given that I should have to suffer three betrayals just because I deserved it? And I was still supposed to feel sorry for her?

Why didn't anyone feel sorry for me?

Mitch refused to let go of me no matter how much I struggled, fought, or bit him. It wasn't until his phone rang loudly amidst the fight that he suddenly loosened his hold on me.

"I have an emergency to tend to. We'll talk after I get home."

I lost my balance and fell hard against the broken glass on the floor. He simply stopped in his tracks when he heard my groan and said, "No matter what my relationship with Lexie is, you will still always be my wife. Think carefully about what's more important to you."

The door then slammed heavily behind him. My white dress was soon dyed red, and it hurt so much that I could barely form a coherent sentence.

I hurriedly pressed the emergency contact button on my phone.

"Mitch… Come home quickly… I'm in pain…"

Mitch's voice was filled with impatience.

"Can you stop making such a fuss, Justine Gardner? I'm a very busy man! How can you coincidentally be in pain right after I left the house?"

I couldn't stop myself from moaning in pain. "But I'm bleeding…"

Just then, I heard Lexie's laughter float through the call.

"Shall we bring the kitten home, Mitchie? What's the matter? Is it Justine again?"

"Nothing important," Mitch replied. "I'll send you and the kitten home first."

Painful breaths caught in my throat. I couldn't even make another sound anymore.

My lips grew dry and cracked as I stared at the disconnected call on my phone. Suddenly, I realized that incidents like this had happened multiple times in the past.

When we went camping together and the tent collapsed, the first thing Mitch did was to protect Lexie's head. If both of us happened to stain our clothes during menstruation, he would always lend his jacket to her first.

Even now, Mitch still chose to abandon me without hesitation just for her and a kitten.

I stroked the red birthmark on my finger that matched Mitch's and heard his wedding vow echoing in my ears.

"We're bound together for life because we share the same birthmark, Justine. I promise that I'll never let you down or betray you!"

Tears streamed down my face as I tapped on the phone again, this time dialling another number.

"Mom? I agree to divorce Mitch."

The 99 hills were rugged and difficult to traverse, and the thought of anyone climbing every single one of them on their knees was truly torment and humiliation. However, Mitch hung on to what I said like he was clutching at straws. He nodded at once without any hesitation."I'll go. I'll climb all of them on my knees as long as you'll just give me a second chance!"Five days later, he mustered the last bit of whatever strength he had left and slowly made his way to my doorstep. He looked at the tightly closed door and collapsed to the ground, his voice hoarse and broken and filled with exhaustion and humility."Justine… I climbed them all… I climbed all 99 hills on my knees… I did it…"His knees were so badly bruised and bleeding that he could barely stand upright. He staggered back to his feet and waited anxiously like a prisoner on death row waiting for his punishment. However, the only response he got in return was deathly silence. He strained his ears and heard the sound o

Justine's POVI was prepared to die the moment I fell off the building. However, fate shone its favor upon me. I ended up landing on the 18th-floor balcony four floors down and survived somehow.Whilst the nurses changed my dressings in the ward, I asked in a hoarse voice, "Who saved me?"The nurse was delighted to see that I was awake."You're finally awake! You're so lucky that Mr. Schmitt happened to bump into you!"Mr. Schmitt?"While staring blankly at the ceiling above me, a shadow fell over me just then, and I shifted my gaze to the person in disbelief. It was him. Caleb Schmitt.I had once been cornered by a gang of street thugs when I was younger, and I hadn't been able to get hold of Mitch on the phone. It was Caleb who saved my life back then, scaring the thugs away.He was dressed immaculately in a suit as he silently handed me a gold-embossed business card with cool fingertips."Just call this number if anyone dares to bully or threaten you again."My mind had

Lexie never expected Mitch to ask her that. Her heart dropped into her stomach as she stammered her answer, "Oh, I meant she's left you… I didn't mean that she was gone as in 'dead'…"She still thought that she'd executed everything flawlessly."Like how things used to be?" Mitch echoed her last line in a low voice. He then withdrew his arm from her hold and suppressed the anger in his eyes. "Did you really think that things between us could actually go back to how they used to be?""Of course!" Lexie said, completely oblivious to the change in his emotions. She even stomped her feet playfully and said, "You used to shower me with love the most. You'd always forgive me no matter what I did."Even if I made some mistakes in the past by accident, you'd still forgive me for everything, wouldn't you?"She eagerly waited for Mitch to answer her tenderly and lovingly, fantasizing that he would still cherish her and treat her carefully like he used to.She was so engrossed in her daydre

Lexie hesitated for a while, her eyes swirling with intense resentment and possessiveness as she stared at Mitch."Say, do you think Justine will throw a huge fit if I sleep with you tonight?"Mitch's heart pounded against his chest. He froze completely, feeling absolutely stunned. His mind was in turmoil in the dim light of the bar. He was overwhelmed with alcohol and a strange sense of disorientation, and he mistook this shadow for solace. After all, Justine had stopped having sex with him ever since that incident. And so, Mitch crossed the line with Lexie that night in a moment of heat and passion.Since then, everything began to change subtly. Mitch realized that he was having a change of heart, and he was starting to naturally notice Lexie more often. His patience and gentleness toward Justine also gradually ran out.In fact, he began giving her the cold shoulder and neglecting her. He was the one who had pushed her away from himself.Mitch gripped Justine's phone in his h

Lexie saw Mitch's bloodshot eyes and clenched fists and decided to add more fuel to the fire. She gritted her teeth and said in a trembling voice, "I'm telling the truth! Why else would Justine suddenly sign the divorce papers? Why else would she have left like this?"She's just feeling guilty toward you and can't bear facing you now. These are all traces left behind from her affair with someone else!"Mitch went silent for a long while. Finally, his anger burned the last of his rationale. He gritted his teeth and laughed through his tears. His voice was so hoarse that it sounded like he'd use sandpaper on it."Really, Justine Gardner? You dare to do this to me? Brilliant! Just brilliant!"Stop all of her mother's hospital bills! And nobody is allowed to go look for her!"Sarah looked at him in disbelief. Her face turned pale and grim when she saw her own son consumed with hatred and jealousy. Her eyes turned red, and she opened her mouth to speak."You're out of your mind! Just

The shards on the floor were stained crimson with blood, and several bits of bloody flesh even clung to them.Mitch was completely frozen to the ground. His gaze was fixed on the window. His limbs turned ice-cold, completely devoid of all warmth. He simply could not move.Sarah's face was indifferent as she looked away. Her tone was flat as if she were stating a mere fact, even though every word she said was chilling and cruel."Don't bother looking for her. Justine's dead."Mitch still hadn't recovered from his shock when he trembled again at her words. His pupils constricted abruptly.A split second later, he threw his head back and burst into guffaws. However, the corners of his eyes were pooling with tears."You're lying! What's the point of colluding with her just to lie to me?"I know that she doesn't want to give birth to that baby. Fine, then, I won't
