The Burning Library

The first silver mark glowed above the nameless stone door.

I

Far beyond every world...

the Raven Author stood silently before it.

The burning Library stretched endlessly behind him.

Tower after towering shelf disappeared into crimson flames.

Yet nothing burned.

Books blackened.

Pages curled.

Ink shimmered like liquid fire.

But not a single story turned to ash.

The flames did not destroy.

They remembered.

The Raven Author gently closed his black manuscript.

He looked toward the empty chair across his desk.

"It won't be long now."

A raven landed upon his shoulder.

Instead of cawing...

it whispered.

"The Keeper has refused judgment."

The Raven Author smiled.

"Good."

"If he had chosen already..."

"...the story would have ended too soon."

Far away...

inside the City Where Time Stopped...

the Blue Book suddenly slammed shut.

Every Keeper turned toward Adrian.

The Book had never closed itself so forcefully before.

A faint trail of black smoke escaped from its pages.

Then...

it vanished.

Not destroyed.

Simply...

gone.

Lyra stepped back.

"The Blue Book..."

Elias searched the empty air.

"I can't feel it anymore."

The First Reader whispered,

"It answered another Author."

Silence fell.

For the first time since Adrian had become Keeper...

he stood without the Blue Book.

Without its guidance.

Without its warnings.

Only the restored fountain pen remained in his hand.

Adrian stared at the empty space where the Book had floated.

"So..."

"I have to choose alone."

The Collector nodded.

"That was always going to happen."

"No Book can finish your story for you."

Without warning...

the sky above the city darkened.

Not with clouds.

With feathers.

Thousands of black feathers drifted silently from the heavens.

Every feather dissolved before touching the ground.

Each left behind a single glowing sentence.

Every ending deserves another question.

The words faded.

Then another appeared.

Meet me where stories refuse to die.

The sentence vanished as well.

The restored clocks throughout the city suddenly struck together.

Not midnight.

Not noon.

Only a single deep note.

Dong...

The impossible second grew longer.

People across the city stopped for the briefest instant.

Then continued walking...

unaware anything had happened.

Caelan slowly closed his eyes.

"The second Bell is preparing."

Adrian looked toward the horizon beyond the Gate of Every Possibility.

"I know where he wants me to go."

Elias stepped beside him.

"The Burning Library."

Adrian nodded.

"The question is..."

"...why?"

The Last Editor answered quietly.

"Because he doesn't want to kill you."

"He wants to convince you."

The words lingered heavily.

Adrian remembered the First Author's final letter.

Every villain was once someone's unfinished chapter.

Perhaps...

the Raven Author wasn't trying to conquer the worlds.

Perhaps he truly believed he was saving them.

A soft wind rose.

Not carrying feathers this time.

Carrying pages.

Blank pages.

They circled Adrian once...

then formed a narrow path stretching beyond the Gate of Every Possibility.

Straight toward the unseen Burning Library.

At the end of the path...

a lone lantern ignited.

Beneath it...

an empty chair waited beside a small wooden table.

Two cups of tea rested upon it.

Steam still rose from both.

The Raven Author had prepared a place...

not for battle.

But for conversation.

Adrian tightened his grip on the fountain pen.

Then took the first step onto the path of blank pages.

Behind him...

every Keeper silently followed.

None of them knew whether they were walking toward peace...

or toward the final war between two Authors.

The path of blank pages stretched endlessly into the horizon.

Each step Adrian took caused a new page to appear beneath his feet.

The old page behind him faded into light.

There was no turning back.

Silence surrounded the Keepers.

Not even the wind dared disturb the road.

Far ahead...

the lonely lantern continued burning.

Its gentle flame never flickered.

The table beneath it waited exactly as before.

Two cups of tea.

Two empty chairs.

Nothing else.

As Adrian approached...

the world around him began changing.

The endless white path slowly dissolved.

Towering shelves emerged from the mist.

Thousands upon thousands of them.

Books reached farther than the eye could see.

Every shelf burned with quiet crimson fire.

Yet not a single page was consumed.

The Burning Library.

Adrian had arrived.

The Raven Author was already seated.

He wore the same long black coat.

The same calm expression.

An ancient black book rested closed before him.

He looked up as Adrian stopped a few steps away.

A faint smile crossed his face.

"You came."

"I knew you would."

Adrian remained standing.

"You invited me."

The Raven Author nodded.

"I did."

"And you accepted."

He gently gestured toward the empty chair.

"Sit."

"No traps."

"No riddles."

"No battles."

"Not today."

After a brief pause...

Adrian sat down.

The Keepers instinctively moved forward.

Before they could reach the table...

an invisible wall appeared.

They could see Adrian.

They could hear him.

But they could go no farther.

Elias struck the barrier with his hand.

Nothing happened.

The Raven Author looked toward them politely.

"This conversation belongs only to Authors."

Then his attention returned to Adrian.

He picked up the teapot.

Carefully...

he poured tea into Adrian's cup.

The fragrance was unfamiliar.

It smelled like old paper after rain.

Like forgotten memories.

Like unfinished dreams.

Adrian looked into the cup.

Instead of tea...

he saw reflections.

Thomas laughing.

Edward smiling.

The White Tree standing proudly beneath a golden sky.

Every memory remained alive inside the liquid.

The Raven Author quietly lifted his own cup.

"Do you know why I burn books?"

Adrian answered honestly.

"No."

The Raven Author looked around the endless Library.

"I don't."

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

"The fire does."

He gently placed his cup back upon the table.

"This Library judges every story."

"The flames ask one question."

'Was this ending true...'

'...or merely convenient?'

A nearby shelf suddenly burst into brighter flames.

One old novel slowly floated from the fire.

It opened by itself.

Its final chapter disappeared.

Then...

a completely different ending wrote itself across the pages.

The Raven Author watched silently.

"I never rewrite stories."

"I only give them permission..."

"...to tell the truth."

Adrian stared at the changing book.

"So every ending here changes?"

The Raven Author slowly shook his head.

"No."

"Only the ones that were lying."

Silence settled between them.

Adrian finally asked the question that had followed him since the first black feather.

"Who are you?"

The Raven Author didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

he opened the ancient black book before him.

The first page contained no words.

Only a portrait.

A young man stood beside the First Author.

Both were smiling.

Both held identical fountain pens.

Adrian's eyes widened.

"You knew him."

The Raven Author looked down at the portrait with quiet sadness.

"I didn't just know him."

A long silence followed.

Then he spoke the words that changed everything.

"Before there was a First Author..."

"...there were two."

The words lingered between them.

"Before there was a First Author..."

"...there were two."

The Burning Library fell completely silent.

Even the crimson flames stopped dancing.

Adrian stared at the portrait resting inside the black book.

The two young men looked almost identical in age.

One would one day become known as the First Author.

The other...

sat calmly across the table.

The Raven Author.

Adrian finally spoke.

"You were brothers."

The Raven Author smiled sadly.

"Not by blood."

"By choice."

He gently touched the portrait.

"We began the first story together."

"The First Author dreamed of creating worlds."

"I dreamed of saving them."

The portrait slowly changed.

The two young Authors stood inside an endless white field.

Between them floated a tiny flame.

The First Flame.

Both reached toward it.

Then...

their paths divided.

One carried the flame into the darkness.

Stars appeared.

Worlds were born.

Stories began.

The other remained behind.

Watching countless tiny sparks disappear before they ever became worlds.

The Raven Author closed the book.

"He created possibility."

"I stayed behind..."

"...to mourn every possibility that was never chosen."

Adrian remained silent.

The First Author's final letter echoed in his memory.

Every villain was once someone's unfinished chapter.

Now...

those words finally made sense.

The Raven Author slowly stood.

He walked toward one of the burning shelves.

Without hesitation...

he reached directly into the crimson flames.

Instead of burning him...

the fire gently wrapped around his hand.

He removed a small book.

Its cover was completely blank.

"This child imagined an entire world."

He handed the book to Adrian.

Adrian opened it.

Inside...

he saw an incredible kingdom floating above endless oceans.

Flying cities.

Crystal forests.

People made from music.

Then...

every page suddenly turned blank.

"What happened?"

The Raven Author answered quietly.

"The child grew older."

"Someone told him stories weren't real."

"He never wrote another word."

The blank book slowly crumbled into silver ash.

The ashes floated upward.

Then disappeared forever.

The Raven Author watched them go.

"I couldn't save that one."

He looked directly at Adrian.

"Tell me..."

"Did that world deserve to die..."

"...simply because someone stopped believing?"

Adrian had no answer.

The silence between them became heavier than before.

Far beyond the invisible barrier...

Elias watched anxiously.

"What are they saying?"

The First Reader shook his head.

"I can't hear."

"The Library isn't blocking their voices..."

"It's blocking their meaning."

Back at the table...

the Raven Author poured more tea.

This time...

the liquid inside Adrian's cup showed something different.

Not memories.

The future.

He saw himself standing before the Gate of Every Possibility.

The Gate was broken.

The Blue Book lay in pieces.

The Keepers were gone.

Only Adrian remained.

Alone.

The Raven Author quietly asked,

"If one day..."

"...saving every forgotten story means destroying the history everyone remembers..."

"...what will you choose?"

Adrian looked into the cup again.

The vision faded.

He slowly placed the cup back onto the table.

Then he met the Raven Author's eyes.

"I won't answer..."

"...until I know the price of both choices."

For the first time...

the Raven Author laughed.

Not mockingly.

Not cruelly.

With genuine respect.

He nodded once.

"Good."

"You're already wiser..."

"...than we were."

At that exact moment...

a deep bell echoed across every world.

DONG...

The Second Bell.

The crimson flames throughout the Library suddenly turned brilliant white.

Every book upon every shelf opened at once.

And from somewhere deep beneath the endless Library...

a child's voice softly whispered—

"Please... don't let my story disappear again."

The Second Bell echoed across existence.

DONG...

The sound lingered inside every page of the Burning Library.

Every book had opened.

Every flame had turned white.

For one impossible moment...

every story that had ever existed—and every story that never would—could be heard whispering together.

Then...

the child's voice came again.

Soft.

Afraid.

"Please... don't let my story disappear again."

Adrian immediately stood.

"Where did that come from?"

The Raven Author's expression changed.

For the first time...

his calm mask cracked.

"That..."

"...shouldn't be possible."

He turned toward the endless shelves.

The white flames began moving.

Not upward.

Toward the center of the Library.

Thousands of burning books floated into the air.

Millions of glowing pages formed a giant circle above them.

At its center...

a tiny door slowly appeared.

Unlike every other Door Adrian had seen...

this one was no taller than a child.

Its wood was cracked.

Its paint had faded.

A single name slowly appeared across it.

UNKNOWN

The Raven Author whispered,

"No..."

"I sealed that Door."

Adrian looked at him.

"You've been here before."

The Raven Author nodded.

"Long ago."

"I thought nothing remained behind it."

The tiny Door creaked open by itself.

Darkness poured out.

Not the darkness of evil.

The darkness of forgetting.

From within...

a little boy slowly stepped into the Library.

He couldn't have been older than eight.

His clothes were covered in ink stains.

He held a worn notebook tightly against his chest.

Its pages were completely blank.

The boy looked around nervously.

Then his eyes found Adrian.

A faint smile appeared.

"You heard me."

Adrian slowly knelt.

"Who are you?"

The boy looked down at the notebook.

"I don't remember."

"My name..."

"...was erased."

Silence filled the Library.

The Raven Author closed his eyes in pain.

"I failed you."

The boy shook his head.

"You tried."

"You saved everyone else's stories first."

His innocent voice carried no anger.

Only sadness.

The Blue Book suddenly reappeared beside Adrian.

Without warning.

It opened on its own.

For the first time...

its pages were completely empty.

No words.

No images.

Nothing.

The Raven Author stared at it.

"So that's why..."

"The Book returned."

Adrian frowned.

"What does it want?"

The Raven Author answered quietly.

"It wants you..."

"...to give him back his beginning."

The boy slowly held out his blank notebook.

"I don't need a perfect story."

He smiled hopefully.

"I just don't want to be forgotten."

Adrian looked at the empty pages.

Then at his fountain pen.

For the first time since becoming the Keeper...

there were no prophecies.

No instructions.

No ancient voices.

Only a child...

waiting for someone to write the first line.

Adrian uncapped the pen.

Its silver nib touched the first blank page.

He paused.

Then smiled.

And wrote six simple words.

"His story deserved to exist."

The moment the ink dried...

the notebook burst into brilliant golden light.

The boy gasped.

Words appeared across every page by themselves.

Names.

Places.

Dreams.

Friends.

Adventures.

An entire life...

returning.

Tears filled the Raven Author's eyes.

He laughed softly.

"So simple..."

"All these ages..."

"...and I never realized."

Adrian looked at him.

"You kept trying to rewrite endings."

He closed the notebook gently and handed it back to the smiling boy.

"But sometimes..."

"...the greatest miracle is simply giving someone a beginning."

The child hugged the notebook tightly.

His body slowly transformed into thousands of tiny stars.

Before disappearing...

he looked at both Authors.

And whispered,

"Thank you..."

The stars floated upward.

Every white flame in the Burning Library turned warm gold once again.

The books quietly closed.

Far beyond every world...

a third silver mark slowly appeared upon the nameless stone Door.

III

The Raven Author looked toward it.

His smile faded.

"The Third Bell has answered."

He turned back to Adrian.

"This was never the real trial."

He pointed beyond the endless shelves.

Where the Library ended...

an ocean of unwritten pages stretched into infinity.

At its center stood one final throne.

Empty.

Waiting.

The Raven Author spoke almost in a whisper.

"Someone else has already claimed the Fourth Bell..."

"And they are not here to debate."

"They are here..."

"...to erase every Author."
