The Rogues Ambush

Wolves leap out from the underbrush. Once again, I'm left confused when these wolves also do not behave like rogues like the one I saw last night. Their eyes gleam with intelligence, and they stalk forward with precision and purpose.

“Run!” the escort bellows, snapping me out of it.

Omegas scatter instantly, their basket crashes to the ground, and clothes and meat spill onto the ground. Screams fill the air, but they don't need to worry about running because the rogues come straight at me.

A dark, lean wolf lunges straight at me. Instinct kicks in, and I step aside while twisting my arm into its path. Shock vibrates up my arm when it slams into it, and I shove, redirecting its weight back.

I don't get time to recover from that. Another wolf comes from the side; its claws flash in front of my face. I drop low, sweeping its legs from underneath it. It lets out a yelp when it crashes to the ground.

My wolf presses against my mind. Let me out. Let me show them what we are.

“No,” I snarl

  • The Omega's Deception   Calling for Exile

By midmorning, it's gotten worse: the stares. Normally I get them a lot, but some are starting to look outright hostile. Whispers follow me everywhere I go. Wherever I walk, conversations stop. Heads tilt, eyes track me in that half-fearful, half-curious way, like they can’t decide whether I’m a threat or some kind of fascinating creature. It started much earlier this morning. I had cleaned up the laundry room and discarded the knife before coming back to the kitchen, trying to look normal. The cook gives me trays piled with food to take to the dining hall, along with a few Omegas. The place was filled with rowdy and loud werewolves when I get there, most pausing their conversations to stare at me. As I am passing by the table of the warriors, I hear one say, “The pup isn’t making up stories, that’s for sure. When we got there, I swear I saw her eyes flash gold for a second.” I place a plate of baked bread and stew on a nearby table, keeping my face calm. I refuse to give any

  • The Omega's Deception   The Purge

Caden moves through the forest with the ease of a predator, boots whispering against the damp earth. He hasn’t meant to follow her, not consciously anyway. When his guards had alerted him that Selene was going into the forest again, he should have told them to stop her, to drag her back if they had to. No, he didn't; he offered to bring her back himself. He stops when he spots her through the trees. The moon spills silver over her, making her look eerily beautiful, reminding him of what the pup had described. Her hand is braced against an oak tree, her head tilted towards the sky, and then her back arches, a shudder running through her spine. His wolf is at attention instantly. Something is happening. Then Selene begins to shift, and his pulse quickens. He has watched wolves shift countless times, but this is different. Her change is fluid and graceful, her bones reshaping without the usual agony that follows a shift. She glows soft gold—the pup had said she turned into something

  • The Omega's Deception   He Finally Sees Me

Sleep refused to come that night, not like that’s a new thing, but this time around it’s not only the thought of rogues, the missing pup, or how Caden had moved beside me as we fought side by side. Nyra also urges me to go out, and she’s persistent about it once again. The pack is quiet, wrapped in the kind of silence that follows too much noise and worries. I can hear the crackling flame of the fire burning low outside. Somewhere a pup whimpers in his sleep, and the mother murmurs soothing words. But apart from this, the whole place is still. Nyra won’t let me rest; she continues to pace back and forth within my mind. Clicking her claws against the mental walls in an attempt to irritate me. It’s working, though. I look outside through the window; the moon is high and bright in the sky, and every part of me aches to move. I rise from my mat and step outside, closing the door softly behind me. Outside, the air is cold and fresh, tinged with the scent of damp earth and pine; it c

  • The Omega's Deception   She Turned into Something Golden

A squirrel jumps out of a bush, studies us for a moment, then climbs a tree. Dorian gives me an incredulous look. “What? Am I not allowed to be startled?” I snap before moving away from him. By the time we are leaving the forest, it has gone quiet again. Too quiet. The pup is awake again; he clings to my neck, and his small body can’t stop trembling. I can hear his heartbeat, fast and frantic but alive. That’s all that matters. Caden walks just ahead of me, his shoulders rigid, the last of the fight still written in the hard lines of his body. Dorian moves at his side, scanning the trees as if expecting any rogue to jump out. The warriors walk behind me, and everyone is quiet. It almost feels like the forest is holding its breath. As we break through the last line of trees, the pack members come into view. No one has left the pup mother; they gather around her, offering any comfort they can give. Someone spots us and shouts, “They are back! The pup is alive.” Withi

  • The Omega's Deception   Claws and Chaos

I feel something older and wilder, the same kind of power that was said to have lived in my ancestors blood. A faint golden glow surrounds my body just as the rogues get to their feet. They stand frozen, staring at me in shock. It all stops when Caden bursts through the treeline, startling all of us. The rogues hesitate for half a breath. Just long enough for Caden to move. He's almost a blur, a storm given form. He slams into the nearest wolf with bone-breaking force. The cracking sound echoes through the forest. I don’t wait for orders. I leap forward into the fray. My claws flash, my body answering a call older than instinct. We fall into a rhythm before thought can catch up. He blocks a strike that was meant for me. I pivot under his arm and rake my claws deep into the rogue’s thigh. Caden digs his hand into the rogue’s hair and pulls, taking the head away from the body. Blood splashes over my clothes, and for a moment I’m startled. Okay,I didn’t know we were going f

  • The Omega's Deception   Three Rogues and a Missing Pup

Mira is the first to move. She rushes to the she-wolf's side and wraps her hands around her trembling form. “Hey, hey, breathe.” She murmurs. “We will find him. Nothing is going to happen to him.” Some other she-wolves take the cue. They go over to the mother, offering support, but nothing they say can calm her down. She drops to the ground, clutching the shawl to her chest. Caden arrives at that moment, Beta Dorian and the warriors in tow. All chatter ceases at his presence. His eyes sweep over the crowd before settling on the mother. “Where did you say he was?” “I was with him. I looked away just for a second.” She whispers. “He was by the creek. He likes throwing pebbles—” Caden cuts her off, firmly but gently. “Dorian, take some warriors. Search the stream and the eastern ridge. The rest of the warriors will go with me.” The rest of the pack stands frozen. Mothers clutch their pups to their chests, and the younger wolves chatter about the recent rogue sightings an
