LOGINZane woke to a nudge from one of the soldiers,
“Wake up, we are in the city limits.” The soldier said gruffly.
Zane read the city sign on the way and it said “BOSTON.” The sight that befell Zane stunned him as he looked on in silence. Nature had overtaken everything. As they drove down the streets through the city he admired the beauty. He sees birds flying around and vegetation everywhere, the subways are flooded at the entrances and he can spot a few deer which take off as they hear the engines from the Humvees.
Cars are stricken with weeds and overgrowth. The roads are filled with grass as well as the sidewalks, he sees a few rabbits along the way eating grass and weeds, they too take off at the sound of the humvees approaching. He almost feels serene, with the beauty of this city.
The soldiers smirk at the look of serenity on his face, seeming as they had grown used to this beautiful sight. They kept driving and eventually stopped at a steel reinforced gate connected to a wall at least fifteen feet high by ten feet wide, surrounding what seemed to be a gated base in Boston. Military men armed the walls with their rifles, on patrol. It seemed as though the military had paved over a large amount of the neighborhoods to make a compound.
Daniels reached to his radio and contacted the base,
“Command, this is Daniels, we are back from patrol, found no Pales but found one civilian. We are bringing him in because he seems useful.”
“Roger, that sergeant, bring him in for processing.” The radio crackled back.
Zane was curious now so he asked, “When did this compound become constructed?”
“About eight years ago before the fall of the government, we bulldozed some neighborhoods to make a protective camp for the civilians that hadn’t left the city. Most of these homes were abandoned, so the military decided instead of making the refugees run from here to a military outpost we would construct a base of operations to take them in.” He explained casually.
“Why aren’t there more?” Zane asked curiously.
“There are a few of these outposts, but not many. The military could only do so much when the Pales started showing up en masse. Most bases stationed around the country fell within days of fighting. Cities didn’t last any longer than the bases, they caught everyone by surprise. They are vicious and smart as you probably have witnessed yourself.”
“Yea they breed quickly I know that, but why do you think they weren't noticed sooner?” Zane inquired.
Sergeant Daniels thought for a moment then responded, “Honestly I think they were constructed in an underground lab as a weapon. They didn’t come from nowhere. Might have been a breach of security. But it's above my clearance to know the truth, if anyone has that level of clearance anymore.”
The gate started to open and they entered the compound. Zane could see stairs leading up the walls on the inside. They went up to the armed checkpoint and Daniels swiped a security key over a pad. Then they proceed through another gate. The inside had a fence surrounding the compound as a secondary layer of defense.
What Zane thought would be a small base was actually a small military town, it was huge! People were walking to and fro, going about their daily tasks, having not seen so many people in a very long time he was only able to gape at the sight of it feeling utterly culture shocked.
“How many people are here?” Zane asked in shock.
“Only a few thousand. There were more but a lot of them have died. Mostly all military trained by the way. Boston has been Pale free for about two years due to the outpost’s efforts. Everytime we hear Pales at night in the city we send out squadrons to search and destroy the dens the next day.”
That’s when Zane realized, “That’s why there’s so much wildlife in the city itself!” He exclaimed.
“Yeah. We often go hunting for deer or a rabbit, even turkey sometimes.” He chuckled. He seemed happy to be home.
There was a parking lot for vehicles off to the side where Humvees were parked. Zane could see about 50 of them parked there with two lots one on each side. Daniels pulls into the one on the right, the Humvee behind followed them and they both park inside the designated zones for their vehicles. He then pulls the key out of the ignition and puts it up behind the visor.
All seven of them exit the Humvees and Zane takes a clear look around. There was an obstacle course nearby to the right, there were people running on it, a building which seemed like the headquarters just straight ahead after the parking lots.
Many people were entering and leaving among the many paths there leading to it. To the left of the headquarters there was a giant building, a sign on it said mess hall. It was a high volume training mess hall. Beside it, was a smaller mess for officers. Behind the headquarters there was an open paved center possibly for parades and falling in. At the back of the headquarters there seemed to be a modern armoury building.
Just beyond that there were sprung tents and after that there seemed to be numerous buildings, possibly the barracks. Lookout towers stood around the walls, most likely to shine UV lights on the Pales if they ever showed up; there were large spotlights on those towers with generators at the bottom, which looked to be solar operated.
“A lot to take in the first time, god knows it was for me after fending for myself for a year or so.” Daniels said cheerfully.
“Yeah. It is.” Zane mumbled back.
“Stay here with Richards, I'm heading to HQ, to get you an assigned bunk and barracks. They come with a bathroom and a shower!”
The sound of a shower seemed very promising to Zane, he hadn't showered in a long time. Hell it might have been years since he last showered.
“The barracks comes with a laundry service as well so you can wash the grime off those clothes. Probably been a while since that as well.”
“Yea, it's been a while.” Zane responded in shock.
“Alright then I'll see ya.” With that he walked off to the headquarters.
The two hallways stretch into the building on the right and left of the desk that was stationed right in front of them by about 10 meters. They were dark and had a scent of mold and decay about them. The building was a mess. It had clearly been overrun. There were dried bloodstains from corpses being dragged on the floor and bloody, smeared handprints on the walls. These trails were mostly in the hallway to the right. The building was dark so these were lit up by the flashlights.“Clear. Let’s clear the rest of the building.” Daniels said quietly. “Richards, Carl and David on the left. Anderson, Zane and I on the right, let’s go.”They split into those two groups and started to sweep the building. Zane decided to sheathe his blade and pull out his torch in case he needed to see better. Zane gripped it in his left hand under his pistol and took point once again. They cleared individual rooms down the hallway. Going through about thirty different rooms before they came to a door that pr
Everyone exited the Humvees and gathered in the parking lot. From what Zane could see Daniels was the highest rank, besides the other Sergeant. His insignia was different from Daniels but he assumed it was Sergeant anyways. This Sergeant was about 6’1, he was an african american man with finely toned muscle. Zane could not see his hair, but green eyes shone from beneath his bandana that he wore on his face. His eyes were bright against his skin tone. Zane assumed he had a shaved head with a finely shaved beard. His men were all a little shorter than him. They looked like hardened men. Their faces were covered with bandanas and their helmets were black as well. They all have different designs on them, the Sergeant’s has a skull and crossbones. It was on top of the helmet. The other six men have rifles and snakes on their helmets. These men and the four civilians stood near the Humvees. The civilians were standing in the parking lot while these seven soldiers scanned the base wi
Smiths POVIt was sometime after midnight when he heard the first Pales start to shriek. He didn’t know why the den hadn’t been cleared yet, this was the second night. The wall guards were tripled up this night, again he had no idea why. Smiths was sitting inside the checkpoint station on a chair. His job was to sound alarms in emergencies, but none really ever happened. He stifled a yawn, it was going to be a long night. Smiths couldn’t see anything eventful happening tonight. Except for the Pales being shot at. For the most part it should be a boring shift. The Pales shrieked and howled again, closer this time. It seemed they were approaching the base now.The guards up on the wall started shooting now. Letting out controlled bursts, the Pales screamed in agony, at least the ones that got hit. The UV towers were frantically chasing Pales all over the terrain in the night. The lights were weaving all over the place, just trying to get Pales caught in the light. The guards were shou
Zane’s POV It was a scary experience seeing an alpha for the first time. Those things were terrifying and seemed to be deadly. What Zane couldn’t believe the most was how massive it was. He was starting to doubt Daniels’ reassurances that the base was safe. They didn’t know how many Pales were in the mall in total; it could be hundreds or thousands. And that thought alone was terrifying.Zane was in his room of the barracks stricken with these thoughts. He looked at the alarm clock and it was 5:20. He had eaten lunch earlier, with Daniels’ squad. There was a gag order issued on the topic of the alpha they encountered. The higher ups did not want to cause a panic he could guess. Zane could understand that but all he wanted to do was talk about it, so Zane holed up in his room.He could handle an average Pale but this thing? This thing was on a whole different level from an average Pale’s level. Its aura of dominance was incredible. It’s body massive and the fact it had a tail that seem
It was 10:00 now and all the boys including Zane were gathered around the Humvees. Most of the Humvees were gone on patrol today. They were all geared up with vests, rifles, and radios. Zane had his blades and sidearm but no rifle. Dnaiels started to speak to them about their mission:“Ladies, today as you know Pales are in town! It’s our job to look for the den. Any uncovered manholes spotted let me know. Any blood trails, let me know. Any recently busted down doors, LET ME KNOW.” Daniels really put emphasis on letting him know to get his point across. “Any questions, ladies?” Daniels asked.Nobody said a word, so he told them to mount up. They all got into the Humvees. Daniels pulled down the visor, got the keys and put them in the ignition. The engine roared to life and they set out. They got past the checkpoint and out the gate. Daniels noticed the dead Pales rapidly decomposing outside the wall on the way out. There were two of them.Daniels and his squad left the street and start
Zane’s POV It was 9:00 PM now and Daniels had brought a crate of moonshine down from his room. Carl, David, Anderson and Richards were all drinking moonshine from bottles. They were more like jugs than bottles but that did not matter to them they were getting as wasted as they could to drown their pain out. They were all in the common room of barracks A. It was very similar to barracks J. Couches and chairs were spread out in the area. Everyone was all sitting down. There was a tv and a playstation and some games with movies near it. Anderson and Carl were sharing stories of Williams. They talked about his first deer kill. The time he got scared by a cockroach. The time he killed a turkey and how it was in mid-flight, like an old westerner cowboy. About another time that he got chased by a hive of bees. These stories made Williams seem like a badass. They told stories well into the night. Zane especially liked the story of him clearing Pales like a badass. Shooting them down as they
