Zane eagerly put on the PT clothes, which were gray pants and a white shirt, as well as sword dagger and holster back on. He was determined to do my laundry next so he exited the room with his dirty clothes, locked the door and put the key in his pocket .

He turned and walked down the hallway to the stairs. He hit the bottom of the stairs and almost ran into someone. Startled at first, he dropped his clothes and threw a fist at the man’s face. The man dodged and took a step back.

“Whoa buddy, easy!” The man exclaims.

Zane snaps back to reality, realizing where he is and lowers his fists. He steadies his breathing and apologized:

“I’m sorry, I’m still in my survival mode. I just got here, my name is Zane.”

The man, who Zane now looked at clearly was about 5 '9, a bit taller than him, had shaved blonde sandy hair, a muscular build, and large hands. He had camouflage pants and a camouflage shirt on with sunglasses so he couldn’t see his eyes and he seemed to relax a bit.

“Easy man, my name is Talons. I just got here two months ago. It was a bit surreal at first, eh?” He said this very slowly.

“Yeah it’s a little overwhelming to think I can sleep in a bed again.”

“You betcha! They will either train you up or set you up on patrols soon..” He spoke with an accent that could be placed as Canadian.

“Yea I hope I can contribute enough to help out but I should be fine when it comes to that.” Zane was starting to calm down and his heartbeat was steadying, the adrenaline fading.

“Well I will leave you be and be on my way, see ya around guy.” He spoke cheerily and went on his way.

Zane picked his clothes up and went to the laundry room. He loaded the clothes into the washer and noticed there was no detergent. Whatever, clean is clean, he told himself. Zane set the cycle, then went to sit on the couches in the common area while he waited.

Soldiers came and went as he waited the forty-five minutes, some waved others didn’t, they seemed preoccupied as they went to and from. The washer dinged, then he got up to transfer his clothes into the dryer. As he finished Daniels came into the barracks.

“Heya there you are!.” He seemed happy to see Zane.

“Yeah, just about to finish the laundry. What’s up?”

“You’re going on patrol tomorrow morning. In 10 hundred hours, be ready.” He stated.

“So soon?” Zane was very surprised.

“Yeah it’s just a city patrol so you should be fine. There has been no sign of Pales lately.”

“What is ten hundred hours?” Zane asked.

“Standard military time. It’s about ten o’clock AM.” Daniels told him.

“Alright imma be ready by ten.” Zane responded.

“Alright cool see ya then. Oh yeah, the mess is six to eight, be there early to get food.” He told Zane.

“Alright, I will be there.” Zane replied.

Zane went and sat on the couch til the dryer dinged, after that he grabbed his clothes and headed back to his room. Zane set his clothes neatly folded at the foot of the bed to change into in the morning, set the alarm for seven, after that he set his weapons on the nightstand and the sword standing up against it. From there he got into bed and fell asleep almost instantly as his head hit the pillow.

  • The Pales   The Plan

The two hallways stretch into the building on the right and left of the desk that was stationed right in front of them by about 10 meters. They were dark and had a scent of mold and decay about them. The building was a mess. It had clearly been overrun. There were dried bloodstains from corpses being dragged on the floor and bloody, smeared handprints on the walls. These trails were mostly in the hallway to the right. The building was dark so these were lit up by the flashlights.“Clear. Let’s clear the rest of the building.” Daniels said quietly. “Richards, Carl and David on the left. Anderson, Zane and I on the right, let’s go.”They split into those two groups and started to sweep the building. Zane decided to sheathe his blade and pull out his torch in case he needed to see better. Zane gripped it in his left hand under his pistol and took point once again. They cleared individual rooms down the hallway. Going through about thirty different rooms before they came to a door that pr

  • The Pales   Without Shelter

Everyone exited the Humvees and gathered in the parking lot. From what Zane could see Daniels was the highest rank, besides the other Sergeant. His insignia was different from Daniels but he assumed it was Sergeant anyways. This Sergeant was about 6’1, he was an african american man with finely toned muscle. Zane could not see his hair, but green eyes shone from beneath his bandana that he wore on his face. His eyes were bright against his skin tone. Zane assumed he had a shaved head with a finely shaved beard. His men were all a little shorter than him. They looked like hardened men. Their faces were covered with bandanas and their helmets were black as well. They all have different designs on them, the Sergeant’s has a skull and crossbones. It was on top of the helmet. The other six men have rifles and snakes on their helmets. These men and the four civilians stood near the Humvees. The civilians were standing in the parking lot while these seven soldiers scanned the base wi

  • The Pales   The Fall OF Camp Delta

Smiths POVIt was sometime after midnight when he heard the first Pales start to shriek. He didn’t know why the den hadn’t been cleared yet, this was the second night. The wall guards were tripled up this night, again he had no idea why. Smiths was sitting inside the checkpoint station on a chair. His job was to sound alarms in emergencies, but none really ever happened. He stifled a yawn, it was going to be a long night. Smiths couldn’t see anything eventful happening tonight. Except for the Pales being shot at. For the most part it should be a boring shift. The Pales shrieked and howled again, closer this time. It seemed they were approaching the base now.The guards up on the wall started shooting now. Letting out controlled bursts, the Pales screamed in agony, at least the ones that got hit. The UV towers were frantically chasing Pales all over the terrain in the night. The lights were weaving all over the place, just trying to get Pales caught in the light. The guards were shou

  • The Pales   Tension

Zane’s POV It was a scary experience seeing an alpha for the first time. Those things were terrifying and seemed to be deadly. What Zane couldn’t believe the most was how massive it was. He was starting to doubt Daniels’ reassurances that the base was safe. They didn’t know how many Pales were in the mall in total; it could be hundreds or thousands. And that thought alone was terrifying.Zane was in his room of the barracks stricken with these thoughts. He looked at the alarm clock and it was 5:20. He had eaten lunch earlier, with Daniels’ squad. There was a gag order issued on the topic of the alpha they encountered. The higher ups did not want to cause a panic he could guess. Zane could understand that but all he wanted to do was talk about it, so Zane holed up in his room.He could handle an average Pale but this thing? This thing was on a whole different level from an average Pale’s level. Its aura of dominance was incredible. It’s body massive and the fact it had a tail that seem

  • The Pales   The Alpha

It was 10:00 now and all the boys including Zane were gathered around the Humvees. Most of the Humvees were gone on patrol today. They were all geared up with vests, rifles, and radios. Zane had his blades and sidearm but no rifle. Dnaiels started to speak to them about their mission:“Ladies, today as you know Pales are in town! It’s our job to look for the den. Any uncovered manholes spotted let me know. Any blood trails, let me know. Any recently busted down doors, LET ME KNOW.” Daniels really put emphasis on letting him know to get his point across. “Any questions, ladies?” Daniels asked.Nobody said a word, so he told them to mount up. They all got into the Humvees. Daniels pulled down the visor, got the keys and put them in the ignition. The engine roared to life and they set out. They got past the checkpoint and out the gate. Daniels noticed the dead Pales rapidly decomposing outside the wall on the way out. There were two of them.Daniels and his squad left the street and start

  • The Pales   Grief And The Wall

Zane’s POV It was 9:00 PM now and Daniels had brought a crate of moonshine down from his room. Carl, David, Anderson and Richards were all drinking moonshine from bottles. They were more like jugs than bottles but that did not matter to them they were getting as wasted as they could to drown their pain out. They were all in the common room of barracks A. It was very similar to barracks J. Couches and chairs were spread out in the area. Everyone was all sitting down. There was a tv and a playstation and some games with movies near it. Anderson and Carl were sharing stories of Williams. They talked about his first deer kill. The time he got scared by a cockroach. The time he killed a turkey and how it was in mid-flight, like an old westerner cowboy. About another time that he got chased by a hive of bees. These stories made Williams seem like a badass. They told stories well into the night. Zane especially liked the story of him clearing Pales like a badass. Shooting them down as they
