Flustered, the two pulled away. Gwen wiped her mouth and quickly straightened her clothes as she sat next to Ace. Just a few meters away from them were their two kids, Ella and Holland. They were twins only born a couple of hours apart. Ella was the older sibling and seeing how she acted as a four-year-old, she was sure to tease her brother about it a lot when they got older.
They both ran towards them and Gwen always stiffened when they ran, fearing they would trip. Behind them was their group of nannies who were looking rather sheepish and avoiding their gazes. They did allow the children to ruin a perfectly good moment but Gwen quickly got over it, there was plenty of time for that in the future.
"Mommy!" Ella ran and basically jumped on her lap. Gwen braced for the impact and then before she could even recover Ella was already wriggling in her lap and trying to stand up on it, using her hair as a way to pull herself up.
"Ow! Ow!" Gwen winced and pried her hair free of Ella's hands.
"Mommy! Mommy!" she bounced.
"Yes, sweetheart?" Gwen smiled fondly at her.
Ella looked exactly like her, with beautiful blond hair and deep brown eyes. She also acted like Gwen. She was a little too independent for a four-year-old and was always wanting things to be done her way. Gwen was curious to see how she would grow up and if she would be a good Queen.
Ella was the older one so the throne go to her in the line of succession, but if she didn't want it then it would be passed onto Holland, but that was only if she was of age to make that decision. She wanted her children to have the freedom of choice in their lives and would not force anything on anyone. Ace was more than willing to make as many heirs as needed for the throne but Gwen wanted to take it slow.
"We went and rode horses today! I went on the big one and Holly went on the smaller one! Because he was scared!"
Gwen held Ella steady with her arms and looked over at Holland who was sitting normally on Ace's lap. Ace held him under his arms and was swaying him. At his sister's words, Holland pouted.
"I just wanted to go on the smaller one. I wasn't scared," he stated.
"Mommy! Holly was scared! I saw it!"
Gwen chuckled. "No need to yell Ella, I'm right here. And if Holland says he wasn't scared then he wasn't, alright. Everyone goes at their own pace."
Gwen leaned over and pulled the neglected tray back. She took a grape and fed one to Ella before handing one to Ace which he fed to Holland.
"After all of that, I'm sure you're hungry, yeah. Let's eat some of this food." Ace let Holland off of his lap and Ella joined him as they sat in front of the tray and picked off the things they liked.
Gwen dismissed the group of nannies so that they could all spend time alone. She and Ace watched the kids have their own little discussion as they ate the food. Gwen would have to constantly stop Ella from throwing away the food she didn't like and just ended up eating it instead.
When Ella was born she had fair skin and even some hair on her head. Ace had wanted their daughter to look like him so he was obviously crestfallen when she didn't. But then Holland came out and he was a carbon copy of Ace. Beautiful brown skin and curly brown hair. Gwen was grateful that his looks were all he was going to get. If Holland ever developed the insufferable personality Ace had in the past she would put a stop to it immediately. Or she was sure that Ella would be able to straighten him out.
"Did you ever want kids, when you were younger?" Gwen asked Ace, not taking her eyes off their children.
"Not really, but as soon as I met you I knew that that would change."
Gwen gave him a look. "I'm being serious."
"So am I." he winked at her.
After refraining from hitting him, they both took the kids inside. Ella seemed to have a very interesting story to tell and so she kept them entertained the entire time they walked. Gwen could not fully understand what she was saying but nodded along nonetheless.
Because of her time outside she was able to clear her head and try again at her issue. Ace took the kids and left her to her devices. Gwen knew that the best thing to do if she had a problem was to walk away but in that moment she just wanted to get it done and burned herself out in the end.
She was not raised with the intend of her one day becoming the Queen and so when the position suddenly dropped into her lap she had to learn how to adjust accordingly. And after nine years she could definitely say that she had gotten better but was nowhere near perfect. Not as perfect as her mother would have been if she was Queen.
“But that’s not what I should be thinking of,” Gwen shook her head free of those thoughts and got back down to work.
It was late in the night when she decided to head in for the night. The castle was quiet and the only people she could see were the guards. And once she got to her bedroom she definitely wasn’t expecting to see that Ace, along with her kids were awake.
“Mommy!” Elle sprung up from the bed upon seeing her.
“What are you doing up?” she asked and looked at Ace for an explanation.
“They wanted to wait for you and so I kept them there. It seems like they had too much energy to fall asleep anyway.”
Gwen picked Ella up from the bed. “Well know that I’m here, it’s time for bed.”
Elle wriggled in her arm. “But I don’t want to.”
Gwen poked her nose. “That’s not your choice young lady.”
They took the kids back to their room and once they were in bed they both insisted that she stay with them.
“I have to go to my bed now so you guys can get some sleep.”
“Can you tell us a story?” Holland asked.
“Yes! A story.” Ella agreed.
Defeated, Gwen stopped down next to their bed and sighed. “What would you like to hear.”
“How about how we met. Ella’s been asking about that the entire day.” Ace spoke up.
“How we met? Why are you curious about that?” she asked Ella.
“Because Daddy mentioned that you didn’t like him when you met him.”
Gwen pulled a tight smile. “And did he tell you why I didn’t like him?”
“Did Daddy do something naughty?”
Gwen hummed and looked at Ace before she turned back to her daughter. “When I first met him, your daddy was so mean to me…”
THE FIRST ARCChapter One*nine years ago*The streets were relatively busy for the fact that the country was on the verge of war. Although many people wanted to leave to prevent harm from coming to them or their families, the Queen forbid it. Typical of her really, she was a vicious bitch. The Royal castle stood proudly in the distance, guards patrolling around it peacefully. The poeple inside the castle must have been enjoying themselves, knowing that they were about to bring chaos to a country that had minded its business since it was established. But that was the price of power. Being taken over by greed and wanting more.Gwen clicked her tongue and she watched the castle with a
There was a look of pain on her face. They had had this conversation a million times before but Gwen never understood her view enough to back down."And what do you plan to do Gwen? What is your master plan in taking the Queen?""I will join the army. Stop her from winning over Estril and then remove her from the throne."Her mother gave her an incredulous look. "That does not make sense Gwendolynn, you will be killed if you are found as a traitor in the army. Think this through."Gwen nodded. "I know, and that's why I'm planning to join the Estrillian army."There was silence. And then her mother chuckled a bit."That's ridiculous. You won't be able to cross the border let
Gwen gave him her best smile. Mr. Rickeys looked at her suspiciously as he smoked his cigar. He was leaning back into his old couch and was giving Gwen a look that made her think it would be harder than she imagined. The interior of his house was how anyone would expect. Everything looked old and worn down. The grey paint on the walls was peeling off and what remained was cement and grime. There was always a draft that Gwen had to get used to because he never cleaned any of the fireplaces in his house. And there was no way she was willing to do it. Although he lives in such conditions he never complained or seemed like he was struggling. He was content with how he lives, even if it was not up the standard of other people."Why?" he asked and tapped the cigar over a tray."I want to go
Gwen sat on her bed looking out of her window. It was around midnight and she had an oil lamp burning on her nightstand. She was stuck in a problem. The problem was preventing her from doing what she needed to do. And the problem had to do with her mother. If she were to suddenly leave in the middle of the night then it would be problematic and would cause her mother great pain. But if she were to tell her mother that she was planning to leave then she would be prevented from going.Gwen did not want anything to get in her way and she would be locked in the house if she told her mother. But if she didn't tell her then it would cause her mother to be upset. She sighed as she looked out of the window. Gwen got up and tapped her fingers against the cool glass as she looked at all the lights. She could see people walking down on the street.
Once she was through the checks from the Naudis border guards she was officially in the country as a citizen. She told the guards the same story she did the others and they let her pass without any questions. Gwen felt slightly bad for lying but she knew it was for the greater good. There was a bus terminal by the border that took people to multiple areas of the country and that was where all the people were headed. There were a large number of buses andGwen looked for the one that would take her into the main town. Before she left she looked up how to get to the address that Mr.Rickeys gave her on the card. She would go there, just to let them know that Mr. Rickeys knew her and sent her here. Once she got into the army she would need to send letters back home. She was sure that sending letters from Estril to Paria-Drae was out of
When Gwen woke up there were several people looking at her. It took her several seconds to process what was going on but when she did she shot up from her position. There were a couple of seconds of confusion before her thoughts were in order. She had left Paria-Drae and was now in Naudis in some stranger's house. There were four people looking at her. The woman she saw earlier. Two men, who looked to be in their thirties as well, and a woman who looked to be in her twenties.Gwen rubbed her face in embarrassment and offered them a small smile. "Sorry. I didn't mean to fall asleep here."She gathered up her things which got messy while she slept and made sure everything was as it should be. The four didn't say anything and just kept looking at her. Gwen felt even more shame than before
Sasha's expression died a little bit. She looked at her siblings before looking back at Gwen. Jonah looked like he was ready to pounce on her. "What is it?" her voice shook slightly. "Oh, it's nothing hard. I just need you to send letters for me." "Letters?" "You see, I'm on my way to Estril and I can't send letters from there to Paria-Drae. So I want to send them to Naudis first and then have them go home. My mother is not the biggest fan of what I am doing and she worries a lot. So I want to send letters back home to her. I'll send them here and you can mail them to Paria-Drae." "What exactly are you going to do in Estril?" Keith asked.
Once again Gwen was at the border of Naudis. There was almost no one there. She stood up in line for at most five minutes before she got to the front. To say she was nervous was an understatement. She did not hear anything about people being banned from going to Estril and hoped that they would not question her too much. Before she got to the border, she had to go and exchange most of her money for Estrillian money. Hoping that it would not be wasted. The money for Estril, Paria-Drae, and Naudis was not that far off when it came to conversions. It made no sense for the values to be different when they were so close together and had trade between each other. Gwen was sure the trade would be affected because of everything going on now but there hasn't been anything said yet.Because the border was so close to Boreon it did not take her too long to get there by bus. The sky was still dark and the air was chilly. She had some food from Sasha tucked away in her bag and she
