Ashley gasped.

When she opened her eyes, she found herself still in the living room. In a very uncomfortable position—sitting with her left side of her face resting on the table.

The sunlight had already poured in and illuminated the entire room through the large glass window from one end of the wall to the other. It made her frown several times because of the glare.

But the bright sunlight that had risen was nothing compared to the pain that shot through her when she raised her head.

A fierce, dull ache filled her neck and shoulders, radiating upwards to tingle all the nerves in her head and downward as if gripping her shoulders and back. Even after managing to sit upright, her head was still tilted to the right—it was extremely difficult and stiff to move it back to its normal position.

Groans of pain escaped her lips, echoed repeatedly there, as she struggled until finally managed to make her head face forward.

Even after succeeding, the groans of pain continued to slip from her mouth because it was truly unbearable.

Very slowly and carefully, she crawled onto the sofa behind her and laid herself down on her back.

Tears slightly moistened the corners of her eyes as she stared at the ceiling, filling with a mountain of regret.

How could she fall asleep like that? Even this late in the afternoon—though she didn’t know exactly what time it was—without waking up. From her peripheral vision, she could catch traces of the mess from her alone midnight dinner party. On the table, boxes, plastic bowls, and several disposable food containers were scattered haphazardly. Food stains were also splattered everywhere, dirtying some parts of the table.

She sighed. Instead of waking up refreshed, she felt like her life had drained away. Her head was dizzy. And her entire body, down to her big toe, felt more sore and exhausted than the night before. She also felt his strength weakening. Not to mention the mixture of various pains now attacking her upper body—especially her neck and shoulders. Stiffness and tightness sensations alternately tugged and gripped the muscles there.

As she lay still, she could fully feel the various sensations of pain running through her. While her eyes still drifted on the ceiling of the room, her mind naturally floated and wandered.

The lingering effects of the liquor also contributed to her dazed state. Her body's tolerance for alcohol was incredibly low, but she had managed to down two bottles of soju the night before.

Now, as the effects hit her, regret slowly crept in.

Her stomach also began to feel hot and nauseous. The combination of super spicy food and alcohol didn't seem to suit her very well.

After enduring the nausea for a while, she finally gave up and rushed to the bathroom. She could no longer hold back the contents of her stomach that bubbled up her throat.

A mixture of water and chewed food, both coarse and fine, came out abundantly. It filled the bathroom with an unbearable odor.

Once she felt more relieved, she rinsed her mouth and went to the kitchen to make a warm drink. Then dragged herself back to her bedroom and laid down comfortably on the bed.

She checked the clock, which was already ten in the morning.

Planning to sleep just a little longer to fix the chaotic feeling in her body, her eyes began to close. Not long after lying there, she drifted into sleep once again.

Probably because the overwhelming fatigue was simply unstoppable, along with the drowsiness that was still hanging over her due to a very poor quality night's sleep.

Ashley woke up again after a few hours of deep sleep.

She glanced at the desk clock on the nightstand next to her bed—past one in the afternoon.

It felt like she had just closed her eyes for a moment, but three hours had passed.

She still felt the ache in her back and the tightness in her calves. The pain gripping her neck and shoulders hadn’t faded either. But at least this time, she woke up feeling much better than before—her head buried in a soft pillow and her body wrapped in a warm blanket. It was so comfortable that she wanted to sleep again without a care in the world.

But her stomach rumbled and twisted.

She had eaten a lot, but now she was hungry again.

Being angry not only drained her emotions, but also her food reserves in her body.

With laziness hanging over her, she tried to get up and cleaned herself up.

Just as she stepped in the bathroom, she vaguely heard her cell phone ringing in the living room.

She went out again to make sure her hearing wasn't wrong, and saw a missed call from Bella. She immediately dialed back.

“Are you still busy with your husband? I just wanted to say goodbye. That's all. Bye, have fun.”

Bella spoke as soon as she picked up the line and hung up as soon as she finished before Ashley could respond. Ashley automatically winced in annoyance.

She quickly pressed the call button again, and ready to spit out her frustration as soon as Bella picked up.

“Don't hang up!”

“Why are you yelling? I just don’t want to interrupt you.”

“Interrupt me what? Who says you're interrupting? When does your plane leave?”

“Later tonight. I'm just going out to eat and buy souvenirs.”

“Come eat with me. I happen to be leaving. I'll send you the address, and you can show it to the taxi driver.”

“Going where? With your husband? Alone?”

“Why would I be with him? I want to eat with you before you go home. We probably won't see each other again for a long time, so—”

“Ah, I feel bad. But are you sure your husband will let you go? You're newlyweds... is it that easy for him to just let you go?”

“Well, yeah, it’s fine,” Ashley muttered, knowing exactly what Bella meant. But unfortunately, her marriage was not as Bella imagined. “So what? I’m just going out for a bit to see a friend. Take Mike with you too.”

“I can't.”

“What do you mean? Why can't you?”

“I’ve knocked on his door countless times, called, and sent tons of messages. But he only replied with one short message that was... very strange.”

“Very strange? Are you sure he’s in his room? What if he went out and got lost?” Ashley suddenly remembered the robber who had pestered her back in school. “Hah! What if he met a bad guy and got into trouble?!”

  • The Price of Hidden Sins   87. Can I Leave For a Moment?

Josh was true to his word to Sharon. That he would stay near her all the time.He didn't dare to go anywhere at all. Even when he needed to take a shower, he would choose a time when Sharon was sleeping. Even so, he still couldn't leave the girl for too long as he cleaned up as quickly as he could. Guilt and regret gnawed at his heart fiercely. Until his subconscious seemed to make him feel guilty if he relaxed his supervision of Sharon. His days during Sharon's stay in the hospital were spent only accompanying and caring for the girl. Josh left all work matters to his deputy and secretary completely without wanting to be disturbed or bothered. He didn't even think of contacting Ashley. His communication with Ashley completely stopped after the conversation on the phone when he asked for that girl’s help to pack his clothes.Anyone who knew this would definitely think that Josh was crazy. But the truth is that he was crazy. He couldn't forgive himself for almost taking the life of his

There was a brief moment of awkwardness before they ended their brief conversation.Josh knew he was guilty of not being able to keep the promise he had made. And Ashley was probably having a hard time yesterday to bear it all by herself without knowing why and what happened because Josh didn't inform her at all. But yesterday was really too difficult and complicated for him. He didn't even remember the lunch appointment with his mother-in-law until just a few moments ago when he saw Ashley's figure. The incident with Sharon had completely taken away all of his sanity. And it was all beyond his control. Clearly, at the moment, Josh still couldn't divide his mind to resolve what happened between him and Ashley. Because his heart and mind are still full of regret and guilt that feels very excruciating.Later. Later, when Sharon's condition was stable enough and the situation he was facing was calm again, he would try to explain it slowly to Ashley. He thought Ashley would understand be

At first, Josh thought he had misheard. But the distance between where Ashley was sitting and the door of the room was not far. And the room wasn't that big either. So it was enough to allow him to hear any sound that came from inside, even if it was a bit soft.Josh tilted his head again while looking through the clear glass on the door. From where he was, he could only see Ashley's back. The face and figure lying in front of the girl was covered by her body. But several medical machines and many cords that looked interconnected and hanging there were quite clearly visible. Also some of the little things the girl did—rubbing the face of the patient lying there, and adjusting the patient's clothes and blanket—could be clearly captured by his eyes. Ashley’s words that she spoke again could also be heard well by Josh's ears.“I know I shouldn't have complained to you. But now, no one can listen to me, Mom. In the past, there was Mrs. Go who was always the one I talked to about things. S

PRESENT DAY“Thank you Mr. Jung,” Josh took the small paper bag that his secretary handed him. This morning he realized that he had gone out yesterday without his cell phone. The panic that attacked him due to the incident with Sharon automatically blinded and dulled all his thoughts and common sense. The last time he held his cell phone was in his room before the meeting. He turned off the voice mode and put his cell phone in the drawer because he felt too dizzy to face Sharon. Little did he know that he would be forced to accept the enormous consequences of his actions.Regret still hung around, shaking, and terrorizing him until this moment. And he allowed himself to be gnawed by it. Because he thought he deserved to be tortured by the pain that was brutally punching him in his heart and head. Even if he punched himself physically for punishment, it felt like it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he had done. Josh would never be able to forgive himself. For if only, yesterday h

Ashley searched through tons of articles about her family, Josh's family, and what incidents had happened all this time.Ever since she was forced to return to Auckland, the pain in her heart made her not want to know anything about anything concerning her family. She seemed to leave everything behind. That's why she really didn't know anything. Her head was throbbing with pain when she finally ended her search and closed her phone. The news she had just gotten made her shoulders slump instantly. It was as if her energy and life had evaporated without a trace.Until a knock on her bedroom door finally woke Ashley up from her empty reverie."Miss, it's me. I brought you a snack."Mrs. Go's voice came from behind the door.“Yes, come in,” Ashley said, and the woman walked in.She walked over to Ashley who was sitting in front of her dressing table. She placed the tray she was carrying on the empty part of the table."You didn't come down for breakfast earlier. Mrs. Gu got nagged because

Ashley jerked her head as she almost thought what she just heard was wrong.“I had no intention of refusing this marriage plan from the start.”“Wait,” Ashley felt her throat become very bitter and dry instantly, “You want to do this marriage?”“Yes” Josh then split the crab stuffed mushroom on his plate into two small pieces and ate it. Ignoring Ashley's gaze who was still stunned by his answer just now."Why? We don't know each other that well. Haven't seen each other in a very long time. I'm also sure you don't like me.""We can take things slowly. And I think our history is more than enough to start a relationship. There have been no fights or problems between us as long as I can remember, right?"Josh was wrong. The man was lying as if Ashley didn't know about an incident in the past that could pretty well illustrate how cold Josh felt towards her. And that created a big problem for Ashley having to bear the pain alone.Ashley sank into her confusion again, then mumbled without f

Ashley was stunned for a long time. And when Josh moved to move the chair back so she could sit down, that's when she returned to her senses. Her legs automatically moved closer to sit on the chair. She quietly inhaled and exhaled very slowly and carefully.Behind her confusion and nervousness that suddenly attacked her, there was a very odd feeling that somehow also sneaked into her heart at that moment. How could someone she once liked, who had never seen her as a girl, who she wanted to forget... was now sitting in front of her as her future husband.Josh returned to his seat across from Ashley, still with his thin smile that was hard to translate. “I've ordered food,” he raised his hand as he turned to one of the waiters standing not far from them for a signal. The waiter who caught Josh's instruction responded with a small nod and disappeared into a doorway.“Your favorite signature set,” Josh continued.Ashley, who had been following Josh's gaze, turned her head and looked at h

As promised, before five o'clock Mrs. Go was knocking on Ashley's door again. They said they were giving her time to rest. But before that she had been buried with a pile of big problems first. So how could she rest?Even just lying down and closing her eyes was impossible. Her head ached from the effects of the journey as well as being overwhelmed by the sentences written in the document. Meanwhile, her body continued to move restlessly with a sense of anxiety that she could not describe the excruciating sensation. After trying to lie down for almost half an hour and failing, Ashley got up and sat down again. Her eyes stared at the front cover of the folder and drifted into a blank reverie. Her head did feel full. But something inside didn't take shape at all. Everything was abstract and hard to decipher.Yet, she was not considering anything. Because there was nothing for her to consider. Ashley was speechless. She was only able to stare at her mother who walked away fiercely. Even until the woman disappeared behind the majestic main door, she still looked there. It was as if the empty air had left a trace of her mother's sadism. It was only when the silhouette of Mrs. Go re-entering the house filled her vision that she came to her senses and quickly returned to the pages of documents. Her eyes twitched furiously as she continued the last sentence she had left. Her head lowered deeply to read it more clearly. As if to make sure all the series of letters he saw were not mere illusions.Word by word, sentence by sentence. Ashley read, combined, and deduced the meaning of everything written there. She forced her focus to be fully devoted to understanding all the articles of the agreement without misinterpreting them.“Miss,” Mrs. Go leaned over slightly to interrupt Ashley's focus, “I'll get a pen and your personal stamp.”“W-wait a minute,” Ashley suddenly raised her pal
