"Huh... Um, girl..." Bella was heard exhaling lazily, "You need to remember that Mike is a grown man. There's no need to worry about him that much either."
"Grown men can also meet bad people and get into trouble, right?" Ashley replied, not convinced.
Bella paused for a moment and then said, "Yes, he is. But don't you see his rock-like muscles?"
"Why have big muscles if you can't fight? Don't you remember last year he got beat up by a high school kid?"
Bella winced, then chuckled. "Ouch... If he hears it from you, his heart must be hurting."
They burst out laughing together. After the laughter faded, Ashley sat down on the couch and leaned back. "The important thing is that you confirm his whereabouts and condition first."
Bella's voice was not heard for a moment, "I don't think it's necessary. Ash, I'm sure he's fine—though, yeah, his words are weird."
Ashley raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "How do you know he's fine when you yourself think he's weird? He's also back to NZ tonight with you, right?"
"Yeah, of course, we're on the same flight. Later, I'll show you his message, okay? But if I didn't see it wrong yesterday... it seems like he's doing well."
"What does that mean? Yeah, well, whatever. I'll get ready first. I'll send you the address."
"Okay."
Ashley hung up the phone, sent the location where they would meet, and went back to her delayed shower plans.
Bella arrived about ten minutes after Ashley. Her eyes lit up as she took in the ambiance.
"Wow, this place is so cozy. Is the food good too?" Bella's eyes scanned the entire restaurant with a twinkle.
"I've only been here once. But, I assure you their food is quite good. Besides, it's close to the place I want to visit."
Bella gave her a curious look, "Ah, where are you actually going? Alone, the day after the wedding day. If it was someone else who had a husband like yours, they would have hibernated together for a whole week."
"Am I a polar bear?" Ashley's face turned sour without her realizing it.
Bella squinted, noticing her reaction. "You guys are okay, right?"
Ashley just huffed lightly, avoiding eye contact.
"Sure?" Bella's eyes narrowed even more, her gaze piercing.
Realizing that Bella was getting suspicious, Ashley forced a smile. "He's busy. Gotta take care of this and that. Yeah, you know his company is trying to rise again after some storms. That's why he let me go see you."
Ashley lying. And Bella stayed silent, still giving her that sharp and probing gaze.
Knowing it wouldn’t be easy to lie to Bella, she exhaled, almost giving up. "I'm tired. You can imagine for yourself, right? How busy I was as soon as I got back here. I'm always complaining to you, too. So I wanted to get some fresh air with you now."
Bella relaxed a bit and smiled. "Then where exactly are you going?"
Ashley pointed at the window. "Over there," she said, directing Bella's gaze to the spa and massage place across the restaurant.
Bella turned to look at the place her best friend was pointing at, then gave a light 'ooh' and a meaningful smile. "Your husband must have beat you up pretty badly yesterday, huh? That's why you had to rush to find a massage place. Haha. I think I want to get married too."
Ashley raised one eyebrow, understanding the implication but refusing to respond. Instead, she sipped the espresso in front of her solemnly.
"You even ordered that super bitter coffee. Haven't slept at all since yesterday?" Bella giggled, her laughter growing louder as wild fantasies danced in her mind.
Ashley, wanting to put an end to it, decided to divert the conversation. "What about Mike? What happened exactly?"
"At least let me order my food first," Bella replied, glancing at the menu with an annoyed look before her expression softened again.
Ashley smiled faintly and muttered 'sorry' under her breath, signaling the waiter that they were ready to order.
Once the waiter left, Bella showed her cell phone. Ashley leaned forward, reading the message on the screen.
I'm busy. Having fun. Don't bang on my door. Very good condition. I'll see you at the airport tonight.
"He didn't say where he was?" Ashley asked, frowning.
"No, he didn't. But it's implied by the message," Bella replied.
Ashley looked confused. "How?"
Bella pointed at the phone screen. "She told me not to bang on his door. He's in his room and doesn't want to be disturbed."
Ashley made a non-comprehending face. "You guys had a fight?"
"No," Bella replied briefly. "It had nothing to do with me."
"Strange..."
"Not strange if what I saw yesterday wasn't wrong."
"What did you see?"
Bella hesitated, then finally said, "During your party yesterday... that weird cousin of yours approached us."
"Yes, I know."
"Do you know—also—that I didn't see Mike again after I went looking for you? Do you realize that we both didn't see Mike back then?"
Ashley frowned, trying to recall. "Was it after I—" she stopped herself from mentioning the incident in her hotel room. "After I got back to the park?"
"Yes," Bella laughed lightly. "While you were eating lots of foods while pouting. I don't think I've seen Mike at the party since."
"Well-yeah, that doesn't mean Mike was definitely with Sera, if that's what you mean."
"I don't think so. It doesn't matter if he's with anyone anyway. But, last night, when I went downstairs to get a snack because I was starving and ran out of food, I saw a girl enter Mike's room. I'm sure it was a girl because her hair was waist-length and loose."
Ashley was about to speak, but Bella continued, "I thought it was Sera—at first. I didn't see her clearly. Just her back and the back of her head, then it disappeared inside. I knocked on her door soon after but got absolutely no response. In fact, it was suddenly like there was no life in the room. It was very quiet—you know, it was past midnight. I just realized that the girl was wearing a long white dress, and I ran into my room again because of the sudden goosebumps and fear."
Ashley, who heard that, was speechless. It wasn't that she didn't believe in creepy things like that. But it somehow didn't make much sense.
"Then when did you get the message from Mike?"
"This morning. You don't think he was hidden by a ghost, do you?"
"It's an expensive hotel, there can't be ghosts there,” Ashley denied, even though she doubted herself.
“Are you really going to the orphanage?” Ashley was sitting on the sofa in their room when Josh came out of the bathroom.Josh nodded lightly, “Yes.” Then stepped over to the closet and started picking out his suit.Ashley woke up moments ago to the noise of water in her bathroom. While still not fully awake from her sleep, she thought she heard it wrong and left it alone. But the sound of running water continued and finally woke her up completely. All she knew was that there was no one in the apartment. Josh didn't even come home and only dropped her off at the basement. And even though Josh had said he would pick her up to go to the orphanage, her preconceived notion was that he probably wouldn't keep his word—like he always had in the past. But, even if he did, it was still early in the morning and there was no way he would be there already. That strangeness of course made Ashley quite scared. The sleepiness that still lingered and her consciousness that wasn't fully awake influen
Josh has been upfront about the reasons that made him agree to this marriage. But Ashley certainly couldn't reciprocate his openness by telling him the reasons why she was also forced to agree to this marriage. Because her biological mother's existence was a big secret—it is her family's past sins that no one should know about, not even Josh. That's why Ashley remained silent and didn't mention her reason at all.Josh chose to tell her and his girlfriend’s story. So she would let him tell it without making this situation provoke her to take turns telling her own version of her life story—which to be honest was also very complicated and full of irony.“I may sound very selfish to you, but, can you do me a favor not to blame us too much? I really can't lose Sharon.” Josh's face paled. “I'm afraid of my family hurting her. I'm also really scared that she's trying to hurt herself again.”Ashley looked at Josh with compassion. Before, she just thought that Josh was just a jerk who was too
“What exactly have you done—” Ashley felt her throat constrict as she spoke. She knew Josh's intention in bringing up his girlfriend's life story in their conversation was simply to show that that girl was fragile and needed Josh's presence. To let her know how deep and strong their relationship was, that Josh would never be able to leave his girlfriend for any reason.Of course, Ashley was very understanding and could deduce everything easily. However, there was an important point that felt very odd that clearly disturbed her heart.Josh's remarks about her being the cause of his girlfriend attempting suicide, both recently and in the past. That girl had done it before too! She had tried to end her life more than once?! How much pain did she have to go through to try to do such a horrible thing multiple times?“You mean... She tried to kill herself… more than once? And all because of you?”Ashley was completely confused and had a hard time stringing her speculations together.Josh ha
Josh swallowed before answering Ashley's question. The memory of his careless action, which had to be a fatal mistake, came back to him very clearly.“Because of me.”Ashley frowned. She didn't fully understand what Josh was saying. But the one sentence statement spoken by the man that the reason his girlfriend attempted suicide was because of him, honestly made Ashley's heart a little relieved. The trembling and fear that hit her head seemed to subside instantly. At least she knew that she was not the cause of the horrible incident. Because after all, the intersection of destiny that the three of them are currently living is quite complicated and very emotionally draining. If Josh’s girlfriend was too depressed and lost control, it would be very possible if her marriage and Josh became the direct cause for that girl to do so.Josh sighed. “I did her wrong.” He certainly couldn't have told Ashley that after he came home from the hospital to accompany Ashley's mother and returned to Sh
“Can you not ignore me?”After spending a few moments to take a breath and let it out mindfully, Josh spoke again. His voice sounded clearly pleading. There was no longer any anger implied in his tone. His facial expression was also no longer filled with anger like before. Instead, his eyebrows were arched downwards, showing regret and pleading.Like an impossibility, Josh had managed to erase the emotion etched on his face and suppress all the explosions that were still left inside him. He was still sober enough to stop all his behavior that could potentially escalate the situation between him and Ashley. Although in reality, the situation between the two of them, it seemed like it was already very difficult to save.Ashley sighed lightly. She was indeed very surprised by Josh's anger that was poured out on her just moments ago. Because she was too shocked, she couldn't even react to it except to be stunned into silence.Josh successfully made her mind and logic instantly stop and n
After blowing his heart and mind, Josh stood still and stunned. His consciousness seemed to drift suddenly. Like someone who just woke up from being possessed. His gaze towards Ashley became unfocused. The muscles of his eyes trembled from the outburst of tension as well as a reflection of regret that immediately hit him very hard.In front of him, Ashley was looking at him with a very shocked expression.Josh's body stiffened. Not merely because he was afraid of adding new wounds to the girl or because of his yelling and anger. But because he was confused about what else to do to make up for it. He had come home with the intention of clearing up any misunderstandings with Ashley's parents, as well as repairing—though perhaps only slightly—his complicated relationship with Ashley. But now he was successfully acting the opposite. Instead of being a kind and calm person, Josh has revealed a side of himself that Ashley shouldn't ever know about.Ashley's unorganized groceries, that wer
