That day, Josh willingly complied with Sharon's every whim—going shopping, buying all kinds of overpriced treats, and patiently waiting while she indulged in endless beauty treatments.
But since he had been deprived of rest and sleep for the past few days—he had to be involved in family gatherings before the wedding, drowning in work with a project deadline just three days before the wedding day, and especially the hardest part, was dealing with Sharon's relentless tantrums... the impact on his body was real. It was like he had been beaten and crushed to the bone.
He spent the entire day walking from store to store, sitting for long periods, then standing again—so many times that his legs nearly gave out from sheer exhaustion. Drowsiness clung to him like a heavy fog, so difficult to endure.
His life felt disconnected from his own body. Every step he took was numb. Every movement happened without thought—like he was automatically going through the motions, like he was on autopilot.
Meanwhile, Sharon, like a machine powered by fresh batteries, showed no signs of fatigue. In fact, she remained bright-eyed, cheerful, and full of energy.
It was getting harder for him to keep up.
Yet, seeing her having so much fun, of course Josh couldn’t bring himself to complain. How could he? He would feel really bad if he had to refuse her wishes just because he wanted to lie down and make up for his lack of sleep.
He had always promised himself—years ago—that he would sacrifice anything for her happiness. That he would prioritize her above all else, no matter what.
But at this rate, he wasn’t sure how much longer he could last.
By the time they arrived at Sharon’s apartment, it was quite late—ten o'clock.
Sharon stepped inside with a radiant smile, slipping off her heels and switching to house slippers. Josh followed closely behind, both hands weighed down with an absurd number of shopping bags.
"I'm really, really happy today," Sharon said, turning to face him.
Josh's smile broke out on his tired face, "Really? I'm... much happier if you're happy."
The girl giggled. A soft blush dusting her cheeks.
Then she cupped Josh's face with both hands, stood on tiptoe, and placed a gentle peck on his lips.
"Thank you. I hope we can always be like this," she murmured, her fingers brushed along his jaw gently, "just like before. Just like we did before."
Since none of his hands were idle, Josh remained silent as he gazed deeply and intently at the girl. He knew exactly what she meant. In his heart, he himself also wanted the same thing. But just because of his family's political interests, he had to let their smooth relationship turn into a rocky road filled with obstacles.
"Me too,” he finally said, “I'll do my best to keep us happy, okay?"
Josh tried to convince Sharon. He needed her to believe him. He needed her to know that all the words he said, all the feelings he had, and all the effort he put in were all real.
Because he loved her. More than anything.
"Mh-hm," Sharon nodded firmly. Her eyes still gleaming, "I knew you would do it for me," she stood on tiptoe again, and landed another peck on the man's lips. "Because you know… I can only be happy with you. I really can't live without you. If you ever left me, I—" She hesitated before whispering, "I think I’d rather die."
Sharon urged him again, "You won’t leave me, right, Josh? You’ll stay by my side forever, won’t you?" The girl played with the expression on her face. Watched him closely, waiting—no, demanding—an answer.
Josh swallowed the frustration creeping up his throat. He was too exhausted to deal with this, but he couldn’t afford to let his patience slip.
He exhaled slowly.
"Of course. I'll do anything that can make you happy,” he reassured her, “By staying by your side. Please trust me, okay?"
He didn't even know how many times he had said the same thing—how many times she had asked and how many times he had promised. But for some reason, it was never enough. No matter how much he showed her through his actions, she always wanted to hear it again. She still kept making him promises.
And Josh, despite sometimes feeling annoyed and burdened, with his full awareness, always showered the girl with beautiful words that she wanted to hear.
After all, if he thinks about it, there's nothing to lose at all. It wasn't that hard. He just had to restrain himself from getting tired of saying similar answers.
"I trust you. Who else in this world can I trust if not you."
Sharon wrapped her arms around Josh's neck. Still carrying the bags, Josh stood still as she leaned in. Then she stood on tiptoe again, and brought her face closer to Josh's as she closed her eyes. The tip of her nose was gently rubbed against Josh's pointed nose. Giving soft and affectionate sensation.
"I love you, Josh,” she whispered, “Don't let go of me, okay?"
At this close distance, he could smell the strong scent of her perfume. Her warm and fragrant breath tickled his skin, soothing his heart and sending subtle shivers down his spine.
"Yes, I won't let you go. I love you."
Sharon’s lips curved into a satisfied smile. Her heart felt happy to hear it. Tightening her embrace, she embraced Josh's lips to merge with hers—deeper this time. Exchanging the warmth of each other's stolen breath. Mixed with the sweetness of love and desire in gentle bursts. They both savored the time slowing down around them. Celebrating each heartbeat with deeper tastes, and interspersed with slow, lingering, and teasing kisses.
When she finally pulled away, she giggled, pressing a few playful pecks against the corners of his lips.
"I'm going to take a shower. My body feels uncomfortable," she walked straight inside.
Josh nodded. He couldn't lie to himself if there were conflicting sensations—a slight sense of relief and unfulfilled desire in him. But as he watched her back slipping away and disappearing behind the wall, he wondered if it might be better to just stop there.
His body desperately needed a rest this time.
Josh dropped the bags onto the coffee table in the living room. Then he flung himself onto the couch. He took a deep breath and exhaled. His empty lungs seemed to relieve some of the burden. It felt lighter.
He had barely adjusted his sleeping position when his phone in his pants pocket suddenly rang.
His heart sank.
The name—the last thing he wanted to see at the moment appeared clearly on the screen: Mom.
Josh immediately picked up the unexpected call. At this hour, whatever she had to say couldn't be good.
“Hello, Mom?”
“Can you come to the house right now?” The woman's voice, on the other side, sounded cold and stiff. Straight to the point. Without beginning with any pleasantries.
Josh frowned, "Right now?"
Josh seemed to doubt his own hearing. From his mom's unfriendly tone alone, he was sure something was up. Add to that the fact that she had bothered to call him at this hour and told him to come to the house—he was absolutely sure it could be worse than he had imagined.
"Yes. Right now."
Josh swallowed. He didn't dare to ask what was going on or why he was ordered like that. Only a low, speculative yes came out of his mouth, "Okay. I'll be there."
The phone call was immediately hung up by his mother. Leaving more question marks in Josh's head and a pit of unease in his stomach.
He got up and went into the master bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed—deep in thought. Waiting for Sharon to finish her shower.
When she finally stepped out of the bathroom, he stood up and approached her. Gave her a gentle hug and rubbed her back that wrapped in the bathrobe before leaning away.
Josh tried to say carefully, "My mom just called. She asked me to meet her at home."
Sharon's eyes widened, "At this hour? Why?"
He shook his head weakly. He himself couldn't guess what his mother wanted.
"You're not going to get into trouble, are you?"
"Don’t worry," Josh tried to keep the situation between them calm and under control, "It’s probably about the company. My father's campaign, and my grandfather demanding all sorts of things for his reputation—well, the usual. So, it's most likely about that."
'Hopefully,' Josh shuddered. He himself hoped that what was troubling his mother to call him at this time of night, wasn't too bad.
He exhaled, brushing his fingers through his hair, ‘I should go.” Josh said goodbye and stepped out of the room.
"Josh," as he turned to leave, Sharon’s voice stopped him.
He turned around. With a question mark on his face, waiting for Sharon to continue her words.
She bit her lip, hesitating, "You’ll come back here after, right?"
"You want me to?" Josh asked in a soft tone, as if deliberately teasing her.
Sharon nodded with pouted lips, "Yes. Come back here, will you? I don't want you to go back to your house. I… can't imagine you spending the night with that girl."
Josh sighed, but he smiled.
"Alright,” he promised, and granted her request easily. I'll come back here again. You get some rest."
At first, Josh thought he had misheard. But the distance between where Ashley was sitting and the door of the room was not far. And the room wasn't that big either. So it was enough to allow him to hear any sound that came from inside, even if it was a bit soft.Josh tilted his head again while looking through the clear glass on the door. From where he was, he could only see Ashley's back. The face and figure lying in front of the girl was covered by her body. But several medical machines and many cords that looked interconnected and hanging there were quite clearly visible. Also some of the little things the girl did—rubbing the face of the patient lying there, and adjusting the patient's clothes and blanket—could be clearly captured by his eyes. Ashley’s words that she spoke again could also be heard well by Josh's ears.“I know I shouldn't have complained to you. But now, no one can listen to me, Mom. In the past, there was Mrs. Go who was always the one I talked to about things. S
PRESENT DAY“Thank you Mr. Jung,” Josh took the small paper bag that his secretary handed him. This morning he realized that he had gone out yesterday without his cell phone. The panic that attacked him due to the incident with Sharon automatically blinded and dulled all his thoughts and common sense. The last time he held his cell phone was in his room before the meeting. He turned off the voice mode and put his cell phone in the drawer because he felt too dizzy to face Sharon. Little did he know that he would be forced to accept the enormous consequences of his actions.Regret still hung around, shaking, and terrorizing him until this moment. And he allowed himself to be gnawed by it. Because he thought he deserved to be tortured by the pain that was brutally punching him in his heart and head. Even if he punched himself physically for punishment, it felt like it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he had done. Josh would never be able to forgive himself. For if only, yesterday h
Ashley searched through tons of articles about her family, Josh's family, and what incidents had happened all this time.Ever since she was forced to return to Auckland, the pain in her heart made her not want to know anything about anything concerning her family. She seemed to leave everything behind. That's why she really didn't know anything. Her head was throbbing with pain when she finally ended her search and closed her phone. The news she had just gotten made her shoulders slump instantly. It was as if her energy and life had evaporated without a trace.Until a knock on her bedroom door finally woke Ashley up from her empty reverie."Miss, it's me. I brought you a snack."Mrs. Go's voice came from behind the door.“Yes, come in,” Ashley said, and the woman walked in.She walked over to Ashley who was sitting in front of her dressing table. She placed the tray she was carrying on the empty part of the table."You didn't come down for breakfast earlier. Mrs. Gu got nagged because
Ashley jerked her head as she almost thought what she just heard was wrong.“I had no intention of refusing this marriage plan from the start.”“Wait,” Ashley felt her throat become very bitter and dry instantly, “You want to do this marriage?”“Yes” Josh then split the crab stuffed mushroom on his plate into two small pieces and ate it. Ignoring Ashley's gaze who was still stunned by his answer just now."Why? We don't know each other that well. Haven't seen each other in a very long time. I'm also sure you don't like me.""We can take things slowly. And I think our history is more than enough to start a relationship. There have been no fights or problems between us as long as I can remember, right?"Josh was wrong. The man was lying as if Ashley didn't know about an incident in the past that could pretty well illustrate how cold Josh felt towards her. And that created a big problem for Ashley having to bear the pain alone.Ashley sank into her confusion again, then mumbled without f
Ashley was stunned for a long time. And when Josh moved to move the chair back so she could sit down, that's when she returned to her senses. Her legs automatically moved closer to sit on the chair. She quietly inhaled and exhaled very slowly and carefully.Behind her confusion and nervousness that suddenly attacked her, there was a very odd feeling that somehow also sneaked into her heart at that moment. How could someone she once liked, who had never seen her as a girl, who she wanted to forget... was now sitting in front of her as her future husband.Josh returned to his seat across from Ashley, still with his thin smile that was hard to translate. “I've ordered food,” he raised his hand as he turned to one of the waiters standing not far from them for a signal. The waiter who caught Josh's instruction responded with a small nod and disappeared into a doorway.“Your favorite signature set,” Josh continued.Ashley, who had been following Josh's gaze, turned her head and looked at h
As promised, before five o'clock Mrs. Go was knocking on Ashley's door again. They said they were giving her time to rest. But before that she had been buried with a pile of big problems first. So how could she rest?Even just lying down and closing her eyes was impossible. Her head ached from the effects of the journey as well as being overwhelmed by the sentences written in the document. Meanwhile, her body continued to move restlessly with a sense of anxiety that she could not describe the excruciating sensation. After trying to lie down for almost half an hour and failing, Ashley got up and sat down again. Her eyes stared at the front cover of the folder and drifted into a blank reverie. Her head did feel full. But something inside didn't take shape at all. Everything was abstract and hard to decipher.Yet, she was not considering anything. Because there was nothing for her to consider. Everything her parents proposed was an order and a threat, not an offer. There was no way for h
Ashley was speechless. She was only able to stare at her mother who walked away fiercely. Even until the woman disappeared behind the majestic main door, she still looked there. It was as if the empty air had left a trace of her mother's sadism. It was only when the silhouette of Mrs. Go re-entering the house filled her vision that she came to her senses and quickly returned to the pages of documents. Her eyes twitched furiously as she continued the last sentence she had left. Her head lowered deeply to read it more clearly. As if to make sure all the series of letters he saw were not mere illusions.Word by word, sentence by sentence. Ashley read, combined, and deduced the meaning of everything written there. She forced her focus to be fully devoted to understanding all the articles of the agreement without misinterpreting them.“Miss,” Mrs. Go leaned over slightly to interrupt Ashley's focus, “I'll get a pen and your personal stamp.”“W-wait a minute,” Ashley suddenly raised her pal
ASHLEY’S SECOND RETURN—FLASHBACK“You've finally home. Sit down. And read this,” Ashley’s mother commanded as soon as she saw her daughter’s arrival at the house.Ashley had literally just arrived from a long flight from Auckland to Korea. Although she knew her days ahead would not be as easy as before, since the trip from the airport the only thing in her plan was that she could immediately sleep and relax her muscles that had been very stiff.Of course, that plan didn't come out of nowhere. She landed during the daytime. So it was obvious that neither of her parents were home during that time. That's why she dared to make such a plan. Especially when Mrs. Go, her assistant, said that she didn't have anything scheduled that afternoon. The most likely time she would see her parents was at dinner. It was then that she would probably know the exact reason she was called home—after a very long period of time, after all those long years she was sent away from home for the second time.Suc
Ashley regained her self-control after letting her emotions out through crying in one of the restaurant's private dining rooms. The crying was quite intense. But she did her best to muffle her voice, until all she could hear was a low, stifled shriek. Her tears overflowed. Her chest was tight. And her eyes were swollen after all the turmoil she had let out until there was nothing left. It was as if all the inner wounds that she had been suppressing, spilled out all at once without mercy.Someone might have heard her from outside. The waitress passing by might also want to go in and check the noise she was making. But Ashley couldn't hold back the explosion of anger and sadness that was clogging up her chest. She didn't even care about manners or shame anymore. After a while, she cleaned her face and slightly fixed her light makeup before exiting the room. Although the polish still couldn't cover her red and very puffy eyes. She took a deep breath before pushing open the door, hoping t
