Josh woke up in a much better condition than before. As his consciousness rose to the surface, and his eyes peered open, he could feel the fatigue that had previously settled over his body had now vanished. Perhaps not entirely, but it was enough to make him feel lighter and more comfortable.

He turned her head to the side—just because before going to bed he remembered Ashley was there—and found emptiness. The lighting in the room was also still the same as last night, the curtains were still closed, and it was so quiet. It certainly piqued her curiosity, about how long he had fallen into a deep sleep and what time it was.

Slowly, he got up from the bed and sat himself on the edge. Then he swept his gaze across the room as he recalled where he had last placed his cell phone.

After a few careful head turns, his eyes found the phone lying on the coffee table by the window.

Josh then stood up and walked towards the location of his cell phone. Intending to check the time and if there were any incoming messages.

After grabbing the phone and bringing the screen closer to his face, Josh found that there were tons of message notifications and miss calls. His finger scrolled from top to bottom only to find that they were all from the same sender and caller: Sharon.

Without opening the messages, he could see snippets of messages from the front screen of his phone. Josh only skimmed through them, but he could already summarize everything in one short sentence—his girlfriend was angry and threatened to make him never see her again.

Josh let out a long breath as he closed his phone again and put it back on the table. Leaving the notifications unopened.

With his head still as full as ever, the man approached the long curtains that covered the large windows in the room. Then with a single tug, he dragged them open and let the hot sunlight in and hit him. It was already hot outside. And being too preoccupied with the pile of messages, he had even forgotten his main purpose of checking the current time.

So he bent down again and double-tapped the screen of his cell phone lying on the table.

The illuminated screen showed 1:01 am.

Once again, his breath was exhaled in a long sigh. A sudden uneasiness crept into his chest as he regretted not realizing that he had overslept for so long while at the same time getting more and more worried because he didn't know what to do after ignoring Sharon for so long.

Not to mention, he had yet to find a way out of the complicated problem that attacked him last night.

His head really still held a burden like a volcano that was about to meet its time to erupt hot lava. What a contrast to the condition of his body which had begun to relax. Making the emergence of new sensations that are very uncomfortable, very tormenting.

But this time Josh tried to force himself to remain calm.

All the things he had to deal with right now were too much too complicated.

He still didn't even know where to unravel this tangle of threads from—where to begin and where to end.

As such, he would try to take things slowly.

Of course, after examining which situations would be the least difficult for him and which parties he could best cooperate with.

Josh tried to let go of all those unresolved thoughts for a while. Putting everything in the back of his head, and intending to start trying to see if Ashley could soften up a bit to him.

Thus he moved to look for the girl.

He walked out of the room and down the short hallway that connected to the living room. Then he easily found her in the kitchen located right next to the living room, along with a middle-aged woman he didn't recognize at all.

Just as Josh revealed himself, Ashley raised her face in recognition of his presence. Her hands, which were busy transferring the soup from the pot into small bowls, stopped for a moment.

“Are you awake?” her voice sounded soft. It was very different when the turmoil of anger and resentment overcame her yesterday. Afterward, she even flashed a wide smile. “Sit down, the food will be ready soon.”

Josh, who saw and heard it all, became awkward. He couldn't hide the gesture of surprise as well as confusion that caught him by surprise. His eyes were even floating aimlessly, with his head repeatedly moving around.

While Ashley, who again realized the shock experienced by Josh, tried to cover it up as much as she could.

"Here, Aunt Gong. I told you about it, didn't I?" Her voice was still as soft as before, ”She'll be taking care of the house and cooking for us as well."

Aunt Gong took the time to bow as a sign of respect to Josh in between frying things in the wok.

Ashley quickly put a few bowls filled with soup and two empty bowls on a tray, and brought them to the dining table. She set it up for two, with various dishes already available in the center of the table. He occasionally glanced at the back of Auntie Gong who was busy cooking the last dish, and signaled silently—just by the look in his eyes and the gesture of his head—for Josh to sit down immediately without showing anything odd.

Josh knew Ashley was only trying to be reasonable because there were other people here. He just wasn't used to receiving treatment from the girl that was a hundred and eighty degrees different all of a sudden. Especially after their fight, after what he did to her.

Silently, without making any sound, he walked leisurely to the dining table. He sat down almost at the same time as Ashley who was filling his rice bowl to the brim.

“Eat up,” Ashley threw another big smile at Josh.

While Josh, who was still awkward, immediately turned his gaze to the mound of white rice without being able to respond more.

Ashley, who saw the man's attitude, sneered silently. Only a look of annoyance and an annoyed lip gesture appeared spontaneously on his face. But she quickly realized and quickly corrected it into a normal expression again before Aunt Gong caught her.

“I—” Josh took a breath, “I think we should talk about yesterday again soon.”

Ashley stopped spooning rice onto her plate.

“Talk about what?” her voice remained soft.

“To—”

"Later. Now let's eat first. There's no need to rush, hm?" her voice was still unchanged—it was as soft as if someone in love was talking to their real life partner. Then quickly and firmly gave a sharp look at Aunt Gong who had her back to the two of them. Trying to give a stern signal to act casual as long as the old lady was here.

After blowing his heart and mind, Josh stood still and stunned. His consciousness seemed to drift suddenly. Like someone who just woke up from being possessed. His gaze towards Ashley became unfocused. The muscles of his eyes trembled from the outburst of tension as well as a reflection of regret that immediately hit him very hard.In front of him, Ashley was looking at him with a very shocked expression.Josh's body stiffened. Not merely because he was afraid of adding new wounds to the girl or because of his yelling and anger. But because he was confused about what else to do to make up for it. He had come home with the intention of clearing up any misunderstandings with Ashley's parents, as well as repairing—though perhaps only slightly—his complicated relationship with Ashley. But now he was successfully acting the opposite. Instead of being a kind and calm person, Josh has revealed a side of himself that Ashley shouldn't ever know about.Ashley's unorganized groceries, that wer

  • The Price of Hidden Sins   89. His Weakness (1)

Josh frowned. He realized there was sarcasm hidden behind the girl's words even though the way of speaking caught by his ears had absolutely no hint of annoyance or anger. He didn't know what Ashley was really hiding. Either the girl was no longer angry because she knew the limits of their relationship. Or, she was completely ignoring him.Their relationship deteriorated after the trip from Paris. And it got worse when his accidental encounter with Ashley's mother happened. Then it got even worse when he broke the appointment with Ashley's parents, and didn't come back at all until today. Without giving any information.Josh did say that he had some business that required him to go out of town. But he couldn't even be sure whether Ashley believed him, or maybe not.Either way, the worst thing Josh had done was to lie and never give any news after that.“Are you angry? Because I didn't come home?”Ashley snorted with a laugh, “No.”Then the elevator doors in front of them opened.Ashle

After stopping by his parents' house to pick up the gift that his mother had prepared, Josh returned to his house. He was quite thankful that his mom was taking care of a charity so he didn't have to meet her. Tonight he needed to repair his reputation in front of Ashley's parents. And that would take up a lot of his energy and mind. Therefore, not meeting his own mother was a huge blessing for him. Because Josh could eliminate one cause of his confusion, and make his burden a little lighter.Josh was waiting for the elevator when Ashley walked up from behind him with the same destination. The girl looked a little surprised when Josh turned his head and made their eyes meet each other accidentally. It seems like Ashley didn't realize before that the figure standing in front of the elevator was Josh.Awkwardness suddenly ambushed the empty space between Ashley and Josh. Ashley looked away, and Josh still turned to look at her but with a confused feeling.Ashley didn't expect that she

  • The Price of Hidden Sins   87. Can I Leave For a Moment?

Josh was true to his word to Sharon. That he would stay near her all the time.He didn't dare to go anywhere at all. Even when he needed to take a shower, he would choose a time when Sharon was sleeping. Even so, he still couldn't leave the girl for too long as he cleaned up as quickly as he could. Guilt and regret gnawed at his heart fiercely. Until his subconscious seemed to make him feel guilty if he relaxed his supervision of Sharon. His days during Sharon's stay in the hospital were spent only accompanying and caring for the girl. Josh left all work matters to his deputy and secretary completely without wanting to be disturbed or bothered. He didn't even think of contacting Ashley. His communication with Ashley completely stopped after the conversation on the phone when he asked for that girl’s help to pack his clothes.Anyone who knew this would definitely think that Josh was crazy. But the truth is that he was crazy. He couldn't forgive himself for almost taking the life of his

There was a brief moment of awkwardness before they ended their brief conversation.Josh knew he was guilty of not being able to keep the promise he had made. And Ashley was probably having a hard time yesterday to bear it all by herself without knowing why and what happened because Josh didn't inform her at all. But yesterday was really too difficult and complicated for him. He didn't even remember the lunch appointment with his mother-in-law until just a few moments ago when he saw Ashley's figure. The incident with Sharon had completely taken away all of his sanity. And it was all beyond his control. Clearly, at the moment, Josh still couldn't divide his mind to resolve what happened between him and Ashley. Because his heart and mind are still full of regret and guilt that feels very excruciating.Later. Later, when Sharon's condition was stable enough and the situation he was facing was calm again, he would try to explain it slowly to Ashley. He thought Ashley would understand be

  • The Price of Hidden Sins   85. A Puzzling Puzzle

At first, Josh thought he had misheard. But the distance between where Ashley was sitting and the door of the room was not far. And the room wasn't that big either. So it was enough to allow him to hear any sound that came from inside, even if it was a bit soft.Josh tilted his head again while looking through the clear glass on the door. From where he was, he could only see Ashley's back. The face and figure lying in front of the girl was covered by her body. But several medical machines and many cords that looked interconnected and hanging there were quite clearly visible. Also some of the little things the girl did—rubbing the face of the patient lying there, and adjusting the patient's clothes and blanket—could be clearly captured by his eyes. Ashley’s words that she spoke again could also be heard well by Josh's ears.“I know I shouldn't have complained to you. But now, no one can listen to me, Mom. In the past, there was Mrs. Go who was always the one I talked to about things. S

PRESENT DAY“Thank you Mr. Jung,” Josh took the small paper bag that his secretary handed him. This morning he realized that he had gone out yesterday without his cell phone. The panic that attacked him due to the incident with Sharon automatically blinded and dulled all his thoughts and common sense. The last time he held his cell phone was in his room before the meeting. He turned off the voice mode and put his cell phone in the drawer because he felt too dizzy to face Sharon. Little did he know that he would be forced to accept the enormous consequences of his actions.Regret still hung around, shaking, and terrorizing him until this moment. And he allowed himself to be gnawed by it. Because he thought he deserved to be tortured by the pain that was brutally punching him in his heart and head. Even if he punched himself physically for punishment, it felt like it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he had done. Josh would never be able to forgive himself. For if only, yesterday h

  • The Price of Hidden Sins   83. A Man from Her Past (4)

Ashley searched through tons of articles about her family, Josh's family, and what incidents had happened all this time.Ever since she was forced to return to Auckland, the pain in her heart made her not want to know anything about anything concerning her family. She seemed to leave everything behind. That's why she really didn't know anything. Her head was throbbing with pain when she finally ended her search and closed her phone. The news she had just gotten made her shoulders slump instantly. It was as if her energy and life had evaporated without a trace.Until a knock on her bedroom door finally woke Ashley up from her empty reverie."Miss, it's me. I brought you a snack."Mrs. Go's voice came from behind the door.“Yes, come in,” Ashley said, and the woman walked in.She walked over to Ashley who was sitting in front of her dressing table. She placed the tray she was carrying on the empty part of the table."You didn't come down for breakfast earlier. Mrs. Gu got nagged because

Ashley jerked her head as she almost thought what she just heard was wrong.“I had no intention of refusing this marriage plan from the start.”“Wait,” Ashley felt her throat become very bitter and dry instantly, “You want to do this marriage?”“Yes” Josh then split the crab stuffed mushroom on his plate into two small pieces and ate it. Ignoring Ashley's gaze who was still stunned by his answer just now."Why? We don't know each other that well. Haven't seen each other in a very long time. I'm also sure you don't like me.""We can take things slowly. And I think our history is more than enough to start a relationship. There have been no fights or problems between us as long as I can remember, right?"Josh was wrong. The man was lying as if Ashley didn't know about an incident in the past that could pretty well illustrate how cold Josh felt towards her. And that created a big problem for Ashley having to bear the pain alone.Ashley sank into her confusion again, then mumbled without f
