There was no need to think too hard right now, because no matter how hard he tried, his thoughts kept spinning in the same endless vortex. There was no light at the end of the tunnel. Nor did there seem to be any easy way out. Everything was dark—as if he were trapped alone in a labyrinthine abyss, with no light, no clues, no hope of escape.
The more he sped up his running, the more he amplified his screams, or the more desperate he was to find the exit... all he found was the deeper he got lost.
Maybe he didn't need to solve everything right now. Maybe, tomorrow, he would find a miracle—something that he hadn't thought of yet.
Josh decided to clean himself up after sitting there for a while.
Still only half-aware of his actions, he wandered toward the master bedroom. It was pure instinct—a reflex from his body seeking the most natural place to rest. Even after Josh realized he was standing in front of the door, he didn't immediately turn around or back away. He didn’t panic. He just stood there, staring at the jet-black painted door with a storm of emotion building in his chest.
The memory of how rude he had treated Ashley last night, came back to the surface of his memory with disturbing clarity. As a matter of fact, he knew he wasn’t the type of man to disrespect women, not a man who could do anything to any woman. He had ethics and manners, principles and morals. In his dictionary, there was never any justification for demeaning another person, especially a woman. Regardless of his unfriendly demeanor, Josh was well aware that he was not a bad guy.
But yesterday, in the midst of his turmoil, he had lost control. Anger and fear had clouded his mind. He was only trying to regain power over the situation and make sure he had full power over Ashley who was threatening him at the moment.
But Josh already admitted that he was wrong. He regretted it. And even though he had apologized, he knew it might not be enough to fix the fragile bond he had with Ashley.
He still stood there, motionless, dumbfounded for a long moment.
Then when his hand finally moved to the doorknob, he expected to find the door locked, to confirm that Ashley might indeed be inside and asleep. After that he would just go to the guest room to rest his body and mind. That was the plan.
But who would have thought, the door creaked open with ease when Josh pushed it. Making him immediately speculate if Ashley was not in the apartment. If Ashley wasn’t here, this would definitely make things more difficult for him, because there would definitely be other new serious problems. Josh's worst nightmare at the moment would be if she went back to her parents' house—though that was highly unlikely.
Panic spiked in Josh’s chest. With his heart suddenly pumping fast, he almost jumped into the room to make sure.
Then, yet again, another surprise greeted him unexpectedly.
Inside the room, Josh saw Ashley sleeping.
After the sound of her hurried footsteps and the slight commotion she created, the girl showed no sign of waking up at all. Apparently, she was lost in a deep sleep.
Instantly, a long sigh escaped Josh's nose. He couldn't describe how relieved he was. At least, for tonight, he wouldn’t have to face another disaster in this very long day.
For now, he could try to rest. He could let go of his mind for a while, and regain some of the sleep he had lost.
Josh didn't know why Ashley hadn’t locked the door after what had happened between the two of them. He wouldn't be surprised if the girl's defensiveness got hardened. Whether she intentionally left it unlocked, or forgot to leave it unlocked... in the bottom of his heart, Josh was quite grateful. Because then he could clearly confirm if the girl was staying in this place and not running away from him.
Josh then quietly walked over to one of the sections of the closet that contained his belongings. He grabbed his pajama, underwear, and towel. Then went into the bathroom and cleaned himself up.
Josh ended up soaking for far too long, even dozing off briefly without realizing it. When the cold finally seeped into his bones, he startled awake and rushed to finish.
The shiver still surrounded him and sent goosebumps all over his skin when he came out of the bathroom.
Intending to quickly normalize his body temperature, without thinking, he climbed into the other side of the bed next to Ashley and tucked himself under the blanket. He pulled it up to his neck. The warmth that trapped inside the blanket spread throughout his body. It raised his body temperature to normal, and gave a calming sensation that slowly pulled his consciousness to fade away and enter a peaceful dreamland.
Not long after that, Ashley was startled to find someone beside her.
At first, she was just repositioning herself in her sleep—in an unconscious state—but when her hand bumped into something unfamiliar, her senses kicked in. Her consciousness automatically pulled her awake. Just like that, she jolted awake and discovered the existence of Josh who was sleeping next to her.
A shocked gasp almost escaped her lips. Not understanding how that man could sleep in the same bed as her without her even noticing it.
Then with a sudden burst of emotion, Ashley's hand tried to push Josh's shoulder to keep him away.
"What are you doing here? Get out! Get out now!"
Josh groggily woke up when his body was almost at the edge of the bed. Just one push, perhaps, would have sent him tumbling successfully to the floor.
With his eyes reddened by a pile of sleepiness, fatigue hanging over his body, and shock all mixed together, Josh instinctively grabbed Ashley's wrist who didn't stop pushing him. From his blurry view in the dimly lit room, Josh could still catch the look of anger on Ashley's face.
But he really had no strength left to deal with the girl's emotional outburst. He just wanted to continue sleeping—that's all.
Josh fixed his sleeping position as before while pulling Ashley's hand. He laid his body facing the girl and closed his eyes.
In a low, raspy voice, he murmured, “I just want to make up with you.”
Ashley's hand being pulled like that, also automatically pulled her body. So, she quickly braced herself to keep as far away from Josh as possible. She also kept trying to free her hand from the man's grip, although it was impossible because his grip was too strong.
The harder Ashley tried to pull her hand away, Josh tightened his grip even more, "I'm tired of arguing with everyone. I just want everything to be okay,“ his voice was getting slurred, barely audible, ”Why is that so hard?"
Once again, Ashley still struggled, trying to jerk her hand away. But Josh still wouldn't let go of her grip.
"I'm tired. Can we just rest tonight? Hm?“
”Huh?" Ashley still insisted on trying to pull her hand free. “Let go of me, Josh. I swear I’ll scream if you don’t.”
But Josh no longer didn’t answer anything. His eyes remained closed, his breathing moved regularly, while his hand was still with the same firm hold that had no intention of letting go of Ashley.
Ashley, who was also exhausted, defeated by fatigue and confusion, could only stand still and wait.
Her mind raced.
She was busy thinking about how Josh could get into the room. She was sure she’d locked the door. Then her confidence slowly faded—she doubted herself whether she had locked the door or not. Because remembering her habits in Auckland, she rarely locked her room. Sometimes she didn’t even close it, since Auntie Noh took care of everything.
A few times later, she tried to retract her hand. Then waited again.
And after some time passed, when Ashley could feel Josh's hand grip loosened, she quickly pulled her hand free and rubbed it. Wincing at the dull ache in her wrist.
Annoyed, Ashley stared at the man now deeply asleep, then walked out of the room to the living room.
She was still too furious with Josh—about everything. And there was no way she wanted to be in the same room with him. She would rather wake up with a stiff neck like this morning than share the same air with that man.
Josh woke up in a much better condition than before. As his consciousness rose to the surface, and his eyes peered open, he could feel the fatigue that had previously settled over his body had now vanished. Perhaps not entirely, but it was enough to make him feel lighter and more comfortable. He turned her head to the side—just because before going to bed he remembered Ashley was there—and found emptiness. The lighting in the room was also still the same as last night, the curtains were still closed, and it was so quiet. It certainly piqued her curiosity, about how long he had fallen into a deep sleep and what time it was.Slowly, he got up from the bed and sat himself on the edge. Then he swept his gaze across the room as he recalled where he had last placed his cell phone. After a few careful head turns, his eyes found the phone lying on the coffee table by the window.Josh then stood up and walked towards the location of his cell phone. Intending to check the time and if there were
After carefully watching Ashley's gestures, facial expressions, and the look in her eyes, Josh was finally able to translate what she meant. His mouth then automatically formed the letter ‘Aah’ as a response that he understood. Then, Josh tried to hold back and postpone everything he had planned before—looking for Ashley because he wanted to continue their conversation yesterday. Although it couldn't be denied that the intense turmoil in his head, in his chest, at the base of his tongue—all of them—wanted to be spewed out and resolved as soon as possible, just to alleviate the suffocating pressure caused by the pile of problems with the other party. Which had not been resolved at all, but rather grew, and grew. But no matter what, he still has to be able to control himself. In order not to be caught off guard by something that could harm him as it has in the past. He, also, had to be calm. That way, he would be able to see the big picture of the position at least, after the unknown wo
But Josh still didn't move. His eyes did seem to follow the direction where his father pointed to a folder with his chin. But as soon as he dropped his gaze on the inanimate object, his imagination and hopes about the future of his life with Sharon died. The sound of his father's cell phone broke the short silence between them. After checking the identity of the caller, his father's finger slid over the button and answered briefly. A “Hello” was followed by a few “Hm-hm” and finished with “Yeah, I'll be right there.”Josh watched his father's movements from the tail of his eyes in silence. With his mouth tightly shut and head still bowed, he stared at the folder that held the record of how his life story would end.The man who had almost the same facial lines as Josh glanced at the woman beside him for a signal. The woman, Josh's mother, nodded while flashing a faint smile.“Don't try to make trouble, or even spoil it,” the old man stood up as he straightened his suit, "We've already
PRESENTJosh still vividly remembers filling his days with schemes of the best he could do after the news of the arranged marriage. Her mother knew, her father also, her two older siblings probably understood him even better—that he was actually very resistant to the sudden marriage. Even if he finally agreed, they knew that he was only doing it for Sharon's sake. Because by agreeing to all the plans made and all the conditions put forward by his parents, Sharon's life would be saved. So, with a huge bravery, he was desperate to create a secret scenario behind his forced consent. He really couldn't turn away and let his family hurt the girl just like that. To him, Sharon was his responsibility that he could never let go of. There were many things he had to make sure went on as it should, just as it was, without changing a bit even if he had to pay very dearly—marrying another girl.Just imagining how to explain all that to Sharon didn't sit well with him.Even to this day, after all
Josh looked at Ashley with mixed feelings. He just realized that what he did had a serious impact on other people besides himself and Sharon. All this time, so far, he only thought that he and Sharon were the only ones suffering from being in a difficult situation that was very unfair. But as it turned out, all these things also triggered Ashley's guilt. And what Ashley said was true. The complicated relationship that suddenly had to be established between the two of them did leave a big hole in Josh's heart. He was only good at covering it up by pretending to look fine when agreeing to their marriage. Then when his relationship with Sharon came to light, the uncomfortable feeling was certainly heightened by the outburst of various other types of emotions."No, you're not. You're not an intruder. It's better not to think that way. There's no point in feeling guilty. It's all too complicated."Josh's mission was to make up with Ashley. So right now, he tried to encourage her in any way
Ashley could immediately grasp the meaning of Josh's words just now."Why are you saying that? As if you care about my status? Even if I end up becoming a widow, that's my problem, not yours."Although Ashley knew all of Josh's long words were not completely wrong, she felt that she couldn't admit it too quickly. Her ego was currently provoked too much to be assuaged in the blink of an eye.It was true that when the idea of divorce came into her head, she was completely blinded by the anger and disappointment that attacked her in one day. It seemed natural that she would lose her mind at that time. Then when her mouth proposed an agreement, it was solely because her pride was being trampled on by Josh and his uncivilized girlfriend. So she instinctively searched for a solution to regain her strength and a way to keep her from getting even worse—and to benefit herself. And somehow divorce was the only thing that came to mind. But this proved that Josh's words were not wrong. Ashley di
Ashley walked out of their apartment building. Down the long street and the large park in front of her, then out through the main gate. With hurried steps—without her realizing it—her feet kept moving further and further away from the apartment neighborhood. The only thing that occupied her mind right now, other than getting away from Josh, was making her stomach full. That's why before she left the apartment without a word, all she did was grab her wallet. The disgust caused by Josh's long words made her immediately finish her lunch without wanting to linger there. Even though she had only eaten a few bites of the dish. But being at the same table with that man, while listening to his words, really made her very tired. It was as if the intentions of the two of them who wanted to try to find a way out and come to an agreement that was in line, could never happen—no matter how many talks were held or how long they looked for it.As she consciously put away her unfinished bowl of rice a
Another bystander, who was in a neutral state—not panicked or adrenaline-fueled-—would probably think of doing something more risk-minimizing than what Ashley was doing at the time. At least, whatever step was most likely to save the old woman, but also not hurt herself at the same time. As unlikely as it may be, however, people who intend to save someone from danger should understand to take the option with the least risk of harm.Even if the situation calls for the rescuer to sacrifice themselves, it should not be in the way like what Ashley just did.Instead, she jumped up and became a shield for the other person, and then afterward tried with great difficulty to carry the old woman’s body away from the car. But because she didn't take into account her weak strength and the weight of the fatty old woman, when she stepped out frantically, she automatically fell down and rolled along with the old woman. The people in the vicinity who were initially unaware, stopped what they were doi
Somun held his stomach as he tried to stop laughing. "Okay, okay. So what's your great plan?""I'll pretend to kill myself... But not pretend. Pretend, but not fake," Sharon tried to emphasize her most important point. “So, I'm going to really cut myself, but not so deep that I can't actually die.” she automatically demonstrated the motion of slicing her wrist with the knife she was holding. "That's why I need you here. You're in charge of taking me straight to the hospital as soon as I cut myself so that I can get medical attention quickly. After that, you also have to tell Josh that I'm in serious condition. Since he won't pick up my calls at all, you'll have to send word through his office phone. How?" Sharon's eyes looked serious as she explained her plan.Somun, however, went from underestimating it to thinking it was total nonsense. Because there was also a hint of worry that suddenly came to him."Crazy! The risk is too great. What if you really die before reaching the hospital
Sharon walked back and forth in her spacious living room with her cell phone held firmly in her hand. Occasionally, she frowned as she checked her silent cell phone. Then she walked back and forth again around the room. Checking the time of day, pacing again while seemingly deep in thought, and checking her cell phone again for the umpteenth time. But her messages and incoming calls remained the same as before. There was absolutely nothing new.Worst of all, her face would grow a thousand times more sour every time her outgoing calls went unanswered, and none of her messages were read by the recipient—Josh.“Wow, this is funny,” Somun, who was sitting casually with his legs crossed, was confused by Sharon's behavior. "You sent me here just to see you acting... walking back and forth like that? You think I don't have more important things to do than just watching you do weird things like this?" His tone was high with annoyance.Sharon only glared at the man briefly, then growled angril
“Sir,” a voice sounded in the distance. “Sir, excuse me, sir,” the voice came closer and clearer. “Sir!” then it sounded louder and more firm in his ears.Josh was shocked because when he opened his eyes he saw Mr. Jung—his secretary—looking at him in the face.Josh gasped and tried to sit up. He lifted his head and lowered his legs that had been bent overnight. His neck was stiff because he had fallen asleep on the short sofa in his office, so his head bent uncomfortably.“Are you staying here, Sir?” Mr. Jung looked surprised from the expression on his face. "Today we have a morning meeting with all the divisions.” The man immediately recited Josh's schedule report—as if it was automatic because it had become a habit in doing his work. “Are you going home first to get ready? Would you like me to make you some coffee?“Josh rubbed his eyes and massaged his forehead. ”I don't think so. I'll just take a shower here. When is the meeting?""It's still about two hours away. I was going to
At that moment, Sharon was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at him with a panicked look in her eyes. She was only wearing an inner blouse with the outer—she had been wearing when she met Josh this afternoon—lying by the door, near Josh's feet. And there was no denying that Sharon's hair was a mess. Other than that, Josh couldn't afford to wander any further to check what else was wrong in the room.Even when he saw the silhouette of another man leaning against the window while busy putting on his shirt, Josh averted his eyes and turned away. He walked with very heavy and unsteady footsteps and sat down on the sofa in the living room.Sharon, with panic filling her whole being, glared at that man while whispering to him to tidy up quickly and get out.Her hands haphazardly adjusted all her clothes, brushed her hair casually, and wiped her lips carelessly. She did everything as quickly as possible just to avoid looking like a real mess, while running after Josh. She immediately sa
After a heated argument and Josh's yelling which turned out to be quite traumatizing for Ashley, they didn't speak to each other at all. The short drive to the hospital felt like an uncomfortably long one. The air in their car was cold, but what Josh and Ashley felt was stuffy and claustrophobic. But after all, they were two adults who needed to take responsibility and control their behavior. They both knew they had to calm their hearts and cool their heads in front of Ashley's mother and her business partner later. Because if they were to clearly show the atmosphere of their quarrel in front of others, it would only invite more problems—Ashley's mother would become even more suspicious of Josh, and what if she found out what Josh had done? He, and his family, would be finished right then and there. And it all happened just because of his carelessness. This, for Josh, was like a vicious circle that was increasingly entangling him. He had to cover up his relationship with Sharon by tel
“Go with your husband, and follow us,” Ashley's mother prevented Ashley from getting in when the girl opened the car door next to her mother.Ashley automatically and unconsciously took a deep breath and let out her sigh softly, then replied, “Okay, Mom.”Even so, the woman could hear her heavy sigh and caught the expression of her daughter who seemed to strongly object to what she had just ordered."Wait. Why did you sigh like that just now? Are you tired of me? Don't you like listening to these words of your mother?" The woman looked at her with a serious, flat, expressionless look—which made the atmosphere between them suddenly become instantly suffocating.Ashley, who was still leaning against the car door, felt as if she was being strangled by her mother's words."That's not it, Mom. I'm going to Josh's car. I'm sorry," she ended with a bow and quickly closed the door without any further ado. There was nothing better for Ashley, really, whether it was being in the car with Josh o
Ashley felt like she was being bludgeoned by a blatantly sharp sword at that moment. How dare that man twist Ashley's words in front of her, just to save his own skin. Throwing the blame on Ashley and setting her up to be a sacrifice for her own mother. What a shameless, bad, evil man. From the bottom of her heart, this time Ashley wanted to spill all kinds of curses in this world. The man knew very well that Ashley's entire family lived in Seoul, but instead of being careful he was hanging around with his girlfriend in this city. As if there was no other safer place they could go. The two of them—or at least one of them—could have thought to find a place where it would be impossible to cross paths or meet anyone who knew them. Such a simple thing was impossible if they couldn't think of it.But what happens now? Dating in the most crowded cafe in the most crowded city in the country? Ashley couldn't help but say that this couple was really stupid.Even so, Ashley still couldn't do an
Ashley's breath caught as she suddenly found herself in a very complicated situation like this.“Who is that girl with your husband, Miss?” Mrs. Go narrowed her eyes. Intending to be able to see more clearly as well as make sure that her vision was not wrong. “Do you know her?”Mrs. Go successively asked those curious questions just as Josh was feeding his girlfriend with a very wide drawn smile on his face. Then as the two of them laughed happily and jokingly at each other, Mrs. Go began to shake her head and snort in frustration.“I don't understand—the reason she can't come is because of this?”Ashley looked at Mrs. Go with mounting panic. She was completely confused and didn't know what to answer this time. The couple's intimacy was currently being witnessed firsthand by Mrs. Go—her mother's confidante and the only person closest to her besides Bella. Seeing the current situation, Ashley is not sure if Josh can survive even if she defends him by giving the best reason. The interac
The words of her mother and Josh's mother came to mind when Ashley spent her breakfast alone this morning—for the umpteenth time after she and Josh returned from Paris. In fact, after the incident where she was injured, she felt that her relationship with Josh was somehow going quite well as if nothing had ever happened. Although at that time there was still no clarity on the exact solution that the two of them should do about Josh's scandal with his girlfriend.Ashley also still hoped that Josh would agree to her proposal for a divorce at the right time one day. She had even offered to think of a good scenario that would allow them to separate without disrupting the business relationship between the two families. But Josh just ignored her. When Ashley asked Josh if he wasn't afraid of Ashley snitching on his family or leaking it to the media, he remained calm and continued to ignore all her remarks. It was as if Josh knew that Ashley would never do that because the impact would clear
