PRESENT

Josh still vividly remembers filling his days with schemes of the best he could do after the news of the arranged marriage.

Her mother knew, her father also, her two older siblings probably understood him even better—that he was actually very resistant to the sudden marriage. Even if he finally agreed, they knew that he was only doing it for Sharon's sake. Because by agreeing to all the plans made and all the conditions put forward by his parents, Sharon's life would be saved.

So, with a huge bravery, he was desperate to create a secret scenario behind his forced consent.

He really couldn't turn away and let his family hurt the girl just like that. To him, Sharon was his responsibility that he could never let go of. There were many things he had to make sure went on as it should, just as it was, without changing a bit even if he had to pay very dearly—marrying another girl.

Just imagining how to explain all that to Sharon didn't sit well with him.

Even to this day, after all the things they've had to go through with wounded hearts, Josh was still sometimes haunted by a lot of guilt towards Sharon.

Although the two of them were able to keep in touch secretly, Josh knew that his relationship with Sharon was no longer the same as before. The presence of another girl between them—even though Josh repeatedly assured his girlfriend that the marriage was just a formality with no personal feelings involved—would still have made Sharon uneasy and worried. And Josh couldn't blame Sharon's fears, which were becoming more and more exaggerated by the day. All he could do was continue to reassure her whenever she demanded the sincerity of his feelings.

It wasn't easy going, even for himself.

Pretending to agree to get married, pretending to be willing to carry out his mother's plan, pretending to break up with the only girl he loved, and covering up his ongoing relationship very carefully—though it was eventually revealed... was really exhausting and draining his mind.

Then now, when his mother was threatening him with destroying Sharon because he had broken their agreement, Min Jinah who might use his scandal to blackmail his family even more, and Ashley who he couldn't quite guess what she would do... the pressure inside his head was even more excruciating.

Ashley had indeed revealed that she wanted a divorce in exchange for keeping quiet about Josh’s relationship with another girl. The assumption was that Ashley might just want freedom as this marriage might also be a burden to her. But he personally—considering his mother's big plans and the huge shares that would save his own company—couldn't decide if he should really betray his mother and give up all those lucrative profits.

His company was in a very fragile state as it had to rely on his grandfather's mercy and intervention. Meanwhile, the favor came because his mother was the one begging his grandfather. When the news of his marriage to one of the Song family members broke, his grandfather became quite lenient with him. So it all makes him hesitant, because if his grandfather finds out he had a scandal with another girl and ruined the bond with the Song family, the company he built from his own sweat and tears might lose favor and potentially suffer a collapse.

From what he could roughly guess, the Song family wanted a strong bond before entrusting a large amount of shares to be given freely to him. And his mother, meanwhile, also wanted strong ties in order to have control over the Song family. The rest was just a matter of how he worked it out.

Clearly, everything might not be too difficult if Josh could force himself to ignore his feelings for Sharon for a while. But how could he—when his heart was only filled with Sharon, Sharon, and Sharon alone?

"My work is done, Miss. After this, I'll go to the convenience store for a while to buy some things to clean the kitchen." Aunt Gong's words broke Josh's reverie.

The middle-aged woman placed some other side dishes that she had just finished cooking among the other dishes on the table.

"You can leave them here when you're done. I'll clean it up when I get back."

Ashley smiled at the woman, “Thank you Aunt Gong.”

Josh waited until she had walked out to the main door after retrieving her handbag.

“Ash,” Josh opened the conversation, “are you still angry?”

Ashley did not raise her face at all. She seemed to be busy spooning rice and various side dishes into her mouth and chewing slowly. The only thing that could be heard in between her lunch activities was a light ‘Hum’, sound that was almost inaudible.

Meanwhile, Josh frowned at Ashley's behavior which had changed again and was completely opposite to what she had shown a few moments ago.

“Still angry?” Josh repeated it again. "I want to make up with you. What should I do to make you stop being angry and upset with me?"

Ashley finished her chewing and picked up the glass full of water. She mindfully gulped down all the water.

For the past two days, Ashley’s mind had been completely exhausted by this one jerk who was now sitting at the same table with her. She felt that she had lost too much self-control to the point of showing her side with explosive emotions and resentment. Now, from this moment on, Ashley intends to try to deal with everything in a calm manner. That way, her self-image will look more powerful in the eyes of men—who right now might be thinking of many ways to get her cooperation to cover up his scandal.

Of course, Ashley would. Gladly, even. But of course, she wants reciprocity that is commensurate and in her favor.

"What do you want me to do? Get angry, or compromise? Get angry, or pretend nothing happened like I just did?" Ashley replied in a flat tone, without any turmoil.

Josh continued, "I understand you're angry. And it was all alright. But I want you to end it. Because we can't keep arguing like this. It's going to be uncomfortable."

There was a short sigh from Ashley, "Actually, it's been uncomfortable since we first met, right?"

This time Ashley lifted her face and dropped a flat but judgmental gaze on Josh.

“Why,” she continued. Her tone was slightly emphasized, “why did you agree to this marriage—when you already have another girl you can't leave? You know the consequences. This is all making things uncomfortable between the three of us. I feel so dumb for not knowing anything about the situation I got myself into. And so now I feel myself becoming like the bad intruder among you.”

Josh looked at Ashley with mixed feelings. He just realized that what he did had a serious impact on other people besides himself and Sharon. But as it turned out, all these things also triggered Ashley's guilt. And what Ashley said was true. The complicated relationship that suddenly had to be established between the two of them did leave a big hole in Josh's heart. He was only good at covering it up by pretending to look fine when agreeing to their marriage. Then when his relationship with Sharon came to light, the uncomfortable feeling was certainly heightened by the outburst of various other types of emotions."No, you're not. You're not an intruder. It's better not to think that way. There's no point in feeling guilty. It's all too complicated."Josh's mission was to make up with Ashley. So right now, he tried to encourage her in any way

Ashley could immediately grasp the meaning of Josh's words just now."Why are you saying that? As if you care about my status? Even if I end up becoming a widow, that's my problem, not yours."Although Ashley knew all of Josh's long words were not completely wrong, she felt that she couldn't admit it too quickly. Her ego was currently provoked too much to be assuaged in the blink of an eye.It was true that when the idea of divorce came into her head, she was completely blinded by the anger and disappointment that attacked her in one day. It seemed natural that she would lose her mind at that time. Then when her mouth proposed an agreement, it was solely because her pride was being trampled on by Josh and his uncivilized girlfriend. So she instinctively searched for a solution to regain her strength and a way to keep her from getting even worse—and to benefit herself. And somehow divorce was the only thing that came to mind. But this proved that Josh's words were not wrong. Ashley di

Another bystander, who was in a neutral state—not panicked or adrenaline-fueled-—would probably think of doing something more risk-minimizing than what Ashley was doing at the time. At least, whatever step was most likely to save the old woman, but also not hurt herself at the same time. As unlikely as it may be, however, people who intend to save someone from danger should understand to take the option with the least risk of harm.Even if the situation calls for the rescuer to sacrifice themselves, it should not be in the way like what Ashley just did.Instead, she jumped up and became a shield for the other person, and then afterward tried with great difficulty to carry the old woman’s body away from the car. But because she didn't take into account her weak strength and the weight of the fatty old woman, when she stepped out frantically, she automatically fell down and rolled along with the old woman. The people in the vicinity who were initially unaware, stopped what they were doi

As she recalls, she has only met Jason a few times so far.First, during the meeting of the two big families about a month before the wedding. And secondly, on his wedding day, two days ago. The rest of the time she had only ever seen his picture in passing when looking up Josh on an internet search engine. Therefore, even though they were now connected and became a family, she still couldn't immediately recognize the man in just one look. It may seem strange, but it's not. Indeed, Ashley was so unfamiliar with everything that was going on in her life right now. She didn't even know well the man she married—despite their story years ago—let alone his family whom she had only met and talked to once or twice. The four months Ashley spent after finding out the purpose of her parents calling her back here were short and didn't give her enough clues. The moment she realized that it was her brother-in-law calling her, the man immediately approached her with a surprised expression.“You're c

Ashley was very surprised that Jason suddenly pointed to the scratch marks on her temple. Especially when he directly and openly expressed his speculation that the wound Ashley had was not a new wound.Although the wound was not a new one, the incident that led to the creation of it only happened two days ago. So it shouldn't be too obvious.Meanwhile, Ashley couldn't give an honest answer because it would bring up new problems that she might not be able to handle. Josh had clearly warned her not to tell anyone about his relationship with that girl. So, that made her guess if Josh’s family also had no idea about what he was doing.Telling someone that his little brother was currently worried because he was afraid of his relationship with a girl being exposed should sound really fun, because that jerk Josh would definitely get into trouble. Although Ashley had no idea about Jason's opinion on the matter, when looking at the big picture, his family probably wouldn't be happy because suc

She was confused whether she had just accidentally said something she shouldn't have said. Or were there words or gestures that she didn't realize she had done that suggested that something wrong was going on between her and Josh.If it was the case that she refused to inform Josh because her current condition was fine—it shouldn't have provoked Jason's suspicion, right?Ashley had no idea if it was something that could bother him.Or, perhaps, should she have just obeyed when Jason intended to tell Josh? After all, no matter how much ego and pride she had to maintain, the thought of having to take care of her own wounded self like this would probably exhaust her even more. Sharon walked back and forth in her spacious living room with her cell phone held firmly in her hand. Occasionally, she frowned as she checked her silent cell phone. Checking the time of day, pacing again while seemingly deep in thought, and checking her cell phone again for the umpteenth time. But her messages and incoming calls remained the same as before. There was absolutely nothing new.Worst of all, her face would grow a thousand times more sour every time her outgoing calls went unanswered, and none of her messages were read by the recipient—Josh.“Wow, this is funny,” Somun, who was sitting casually with his legs crossed, was confused by Sharon's behavior. He lifted his head and lowered his legs that had been bent overnight. His neck was stiff because he had fallen asleep on the short sofa in his office, so his head bent uncomfortably.“Are you staying here, Sir?” Mr. Jung looked surprised from the expression on his face. "Today we have a morning meeting with all the divisions.” The man immediately recited Josh's schedule report—as if it was automatic because it had become a habit in doing his work. “Are you going home first to get ready? At that moment, Sharon was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at him with a panicked look in her eyes. She was only wearing an inner blouse with the outer—she had been wearing when she met Josh this afternoon—lying by the door, near Josh's feet. And there was no denying that Sharon's hair was a mess. Other than that, Josh couldn't afford to wander any further to check what else was wrong in the room.Even when he saw the silhouette of another man leaning against the window while busy putting on his shirt, Josh averted his eyes and turned away. He walked with very heavy and unsteady footsteps and sat down on the sofa in the living room.Sharon, with panic filling her whole being, glared at that man while whispering to him to tidy up quickly and get out.Her hands haphazardly adjusted all her clothes, brushed her hair casually, and wiped her lips carelessly.
