After Josh finished reading it and convinced himself to have understood the entire meaning of the sentences written there, he closed the folder with a very long exhale of relief. He felt like he had just succeeded in assembling a puzzle that he had never thought of before that might have a hidden meaning.
Not only that, Josh finally found the way out that he had been looking for so hard.
A sense of disbelief and a truly great pleasant surprise entered him like a miracle that he did not expect.
There were several articles of agreement written and legally authorized in the document. It stated that the parties involved were Ashley and her father. An important point that Josh found quite eye-opening was a statement stating that Ashley was not allowed to sue Josh for divorce. If she did, then all the benefits she received and the shares she owned would be canceled.
It was apparently related to a statement that Josh had also signed privately before marriage. Which actually made him wonder about it at first, but gradually overlooked by him. In the agreement that Ashley's father had made to him, Josh was promised that he would receive a percentage of Songgong's shares as long as he was in a marriage bond with Ashley. And the shares would be automatically transferred to him when his first child was born.
Josh laughed when he realized Ashley's father's strategy. He really had no idea if that old man was too meticulous or cunning.
Either way, after learning about that fact, Josh was much calmer. Because he knew one of the most important things, that Ashley would definitely not be able to divorce him. That girl had no power to control Josh’s decisions, including using his relationship with Sharon as a threat. What Ashley had done before turned out to be nothing more than a false bluff.
Josh then celebrated by enjoying a glass of champagne while listening to jazz music in the living room. He planned to keep waiting for Ashley and greet her with full victory.
He enjoyed his celebration of satisfaction long enough for the sound of the door opening to be clearly heard. Josh was well prepared for whatever that girl might say or do to him. Whatever it was, it would surely feel like nonsense.
But as he walked, at the end of the corridor where the main door of the apartment was, he saw the girl he'd been waiting for just leaning against the door and not immediately moving inside. Josh looked at her for a few moments, and so did Ashley—she also noticed Josh from a distance looking at her. But Ashley looked away.
Until Ashley felt the pain in her legs lessen a little, she slowly started to walk by creeping and holding on to the wall.
Josh, who saw Ashley's strange behavior, walked over. And that's when he realized Ashley's true condition. The arrogance that initially filled him melted away instantly and was replaced by shock.
“What happened to you?”
Ashley completely ignored Josh's question. She just let out a short sigh as she kept trying to walk with the intention of getting to her room so she can rest very soon.
“You left without a word, then came home covered in wounds like this—what exactly did you do?” Josh narrowed his eyes as he moved to the side of Ashley's healthy body near the wall, intending to help the girl walk.
But Ashley rejected him. She pushed away Josh's hand that was touching her. While Josh didn't just stop right there. He tightened his grip on Ashley's hand and forced her to hold on to him.
“I just want to help you. Can't you just obey and accept nicely?” his voice sounded firm.
Ashley, who was already too physically and mentally exhausted, chose to stop fighting the man and hold on to the part of his T-shirt on his back. She also no longer pushed Josh's hands away when the man wrapped his arms around her waist with the intention of supporting her weight. All Ashley had to do now was try to get back on her feet as quickly as possible to get to her room.
After long minutes and a lot of effort, Ashley was finally able to sit on her soft bed with relief.
The pain coming from her wounds was no joke. The sensation tormented her until it traveled to her head. It made her feel a little dizzy. Now, she had to quickly clean herself up and take some medicine. But with almost no energy left like this, Ashley wondered if she should postpone cleaning up, and just take the medicine and rest.
While thinking, Ashley glanced at Josh who was still standing in front of her with a gaze that swept over the wounds on her hands and feet. An idea popped into her head. If Ashley slept here dirty and full of wounds like this, Josh would have no reason to sleep here again like what he did last night. Ashley didn't feel like she could bear to sleeping in the living room again with her body battered like this.
“What happened to you?” Josh asked again with a really curious look in his eyes.
“I fell,” Ashley answered briefly.
Josh frowned, “How come? You're an adult, not a child. Then how did you get home in the first place—when you have difficulty walking like that?”
“Is it only kids who can fall down?” Ashley snapped. She was really annoyed and disgusted by Josh's presence around her. “Can you please leave? I need to rest.”
“There must be a reason for the fall, right? There's a chronology. So, how did you fall and get this much injury?” Josh continued to press Ashley.
Ashley sighed again, feeling really too tired to just explain what had happened to her. So she just answered with a short summary, “Dodged a car.”
“You had an accident?” Josh's eyes reflexively rounded. “The car hit you?”
“No, it didn't. I fell by myself.”
“Did the driver's help you? You gave the driver's contact?”
Ashley gave Josh a look that portrayed exhaustion and thinning patience. “I was at fault, not the driver. And, yes, the guy helped me. He even drove me home. Are you done? Now can you let me rest? I'm really tired and in pain.”
Not wanting to take Josh's rambling any further, Ashley started to open the plastic bag containing her medicines. She took out a packet that already contained a few pills for her to take that night.
Josh, who saw Ashley taking out the medicines, took the initiative to go to the kitchen. “Wait a minute. You can't just swallow them. I'll get you some water.”
As Josh disappeared from the room, Ashley mumbled and then snorted. “I used to take medicine without water. You just don’t know my capability, ck.”
But even so, she still waited until Josh returned to bring her a glass of water to drink along with the pills.
Ashley swallowed them all and then adjusted herself to lie down comfortably.
At that time, Josh was still standing beside her while looking at her. That made Ashley say again in annoyance, “Why are you still here? Get out.”
Josh, with his default face that was as calm as water and unpalpable in depth replied with a flat voice that was no less calm. “I'll wait for you so you can sleep peacefully.”
“No need! Just please get out of here!” Ashley finally snapped with mounting annoyance.
But Josh ignored her. He moved to turn on the bed lamp on the nightstand and turned off the room lights. After that he walked over to close the door and went to lay himself down on the sofa by the window.
“Sleep tight,” Josh murmured, ”Night. Ash.”
Josh swallowed before answering Ashley's question. The memory of his careless action, which had to be a fatal mistake, came back to him very clearly.“Because of me.”Ashley frowned. She didn't fully understand what Josh was saying. But the one sentence statement spoken by the man that the reason his girlfriend attempted suicide was because of him, honestly made Ashley's heart a little relieved. The trembling and fear that hit her head seemed to subside instantly. At least she knew that she was not the cause of the horrible incident. Because after all, the intersection of destiny that the three of them are currently living is quite complicated and very emotionally draining. If Josh’s girlfriend was too depressed and lost control, it would be very possible if her marriage and Josh became the direct cause for that girl to do so.Josh sighed. “I did her wrong.” He certainly couldn't have told Ashley that after he came home from the hospital to accompany Ashley's mother and returned to Sh
“Can you not ignore me?”After spending a few moments to take a breath and let it out mindfully, Josh spoke again. His voice sounded clearly pleading. There was no longer any anger implied in his tone. His facial expression was also no longer filled with anger like before. Instead, his eyebrows were arched downwards, showing regret and pleading.Like an impossibility, Josh had managed to erase the emotion etched on his face and suppress all the explosions that were still left inside him. He was still sober enough to stop all his behavior that could potentially escalate the situation between him and Ashley. Although in reality, the situation between the two of them, it seemed like it was already very difficult to save.Ashley sighed lightly. She was indeed very surprised by Josh's anger that was poured out on her just moments ago. Because she was too shocked, she couldn't even react to it except to be stunned into silence.Josh successfully made her mind and logic instantly stop and n
After blowing his heart and mind, Josh stood still and stunned. His consciousness seemed to drift suddenly. Like someone who just woke up from being possessed. His gaze towards Ashley became unfocused. The muscles of his eyes trembled from the outburst of tension as well as a reflection of regret that immediately hit him very hard.In front of him, Ashley was looking at him with a very shocked expression.Josh's body stiffened. Not merely because he was afraid of adding new wounds to the girl or because of his yelling and anger. But because he was confused about what else to do to make up for it. He had come home with the intention of clearing up any misunderstandings with Ashley's parents, as well as repairing—though perhaps only slightly—his complicated relationship with Ashley. But now he was successfully acting the opposite. Instead of being a kind and calm person, Josh has revealed a side of himself that Ashley shouldn't ever know about.Ashley's unorganized groceries, that wer
Josh frowned. He realized there was sarcasm hidden behind the girl's words even though the way of speaking caught by his ears had absolutely no hint of annoyance or anger. He didn't know what Ashley was really hiding. Either the girl was no longer angry because she knew the limits of their relationship. Or, she was completely ignoring him.Their relationship deteriorated after the trip from Paris. And it got worse when his accidental encounter with Ashley's mother happened. Then it got even worse when he broke the appointment with Ashley's parents, and didn't come back at all until today. Without giving any information.Josh did say that he had some business that required him to go out of town. But he couldn't even be sure whether Ashley believed him, or maybe not.Either way, the worst thing Josh had done was to lie and never give any news after that.“Are you angry? Because I didn't come home?”Ashley snorted with a laugh, “No.”Then the elevator doors in front of them opened.Ashle
After stopping by his parents' house to pick up the gift that his mother had prepared, Josh returned to his house. He was quite thankful that his mom was taking care of a charity so he didn't have to meet her. Tonight he needed to repair his reputation in front of Ashley's parents. And that would take up a lot of his energy and mind. Therefore, not meeting his own mother was a huge blessing for him. Because Josh could eliminate one cause of his confusion, and make his burden a little lighter.Josh was waiting for the elevator when Ashley walked up from behind him with the same destination. The girl looked a little surprised when Josh turned his head and made their eyes meet each other accidentally. It seems like Ashley didn't realize before that the figure standing in front of the elevator was Josh.Awkwardness suddenly ambushed the empty space between Ashley and Josh. Ashley looked away, and Josh still turned to look at her but with a confused feeling.Ashley didn't expect that she
Josh was true to his word to Sharon. That he would stay near her all the time.He didn't dare to go anywhere at all. Even when he needed to take a shower, he would choose a time when Sharon was sleeping. Even so, he still couldn't leave the girl for too long as he cleaned up as quickly as he could. Guilt and regret gnawed at his heart fiercely. Until his subconscious seemed to make him feel guilty if he relaxed his supervision of Sharon. His days during Sharon's stay in the hospital were spent only accompanying and caring for the girl. Josh left all work matters to his deputy and secretary completely without wanting to be disturbed or bothered. He didn't even think of contacting Ashley. His communication with Ashley completely stopped after the conversation on the phone when he asked for that girl’s help to pack his clothes.Anyone who knew this would definitely think that Josh was crazy. But the truth is that he was crazy. He couldn't forgive himself for almost taking the life of his
There was a brief moment of awkwardness before they ended their brief conversation.Josh knew he was guilty of not being able to keep the promise he had made. And Ashley was probably having a hard time yesterday to bear it all by herself without knowing why and what happened because Josh didn't inform her at all. But yesterday was really too difficult and complicated for him. He didn't even remember the lunch appointment with his mother-in-law until just a few moments ago when he saw Ashley's figure. The incident with Sharon had completely taken away all of his sanity. And it was all beyond his control. Clearly, at the moment, Josh still couldn't divide his mind to resolve what happened between him and Ashley. Because his heart and mind are still full of regret and guilt that feels very excruciating.Later. Later, when Sharon's condition was stable enough and the situation he was facing was calm again, he would try to explain it slowly to Ashley. He thought Ashley would understand be
At first, Josh thought he had misheard. But the distance between where Ashley was sitting and the door of the room was not far. And the room wasn't that big either. So it was enough to allow him to hear any sound that came from inside, even if it was a bit soft.Josh tilted his head again while looking through the clear glass on the door. From where he was, he could only see Ashley's back. The face and figure lying in front of the girl was covered by her body. But several medical machines and many cords that looked interconnected and hanging there were quite clearly visible. Also some of the little things the girl did—rubbing the face of the patient lying there, and adjusting the patient's clothes and blanket—could be clearly captured by his eyes. Ashley’s words that she spoke again could also be heard well by Josh's ears.“I know I shouldn't have complained to you. But now, no one can listen to me, Mom. In the past, there was Mrs. Go who was always the one I talked to about things. S
PRESENT DAY“Thank you Mr. Jung,” Josh took the small paper bag that his secretary handed him. This morning he realized that he had gone out yesterday without his cell phone. The panic that attacked him due to the incident with Sharon automatically blinded and dulled all his thoughts and common sense. The last time he held his cell phone was in his room before the meeting. He turned off the voice mode and put his cell phone in the drawer because he felt too dizzy to face Sharon. Little did he know that he would be forced to accept the enormous consequences of his actions.Regret still hung around, shaking, and terrorizing him until this moment. And he allowed himself to be gnawed by it. Because he thought he deserved to be tortured by the pain that was brutally punching him in his heart and head. Even if he punched himself physically for punishment, it felt like it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he had done. Josh would never be able to forgive himself. For if only, yesterday h
