Ashley was sitting on the sofa in the living room when her mother came in. The spot where she was sitting had its back to the corridor that connected the rest of the room to the main entrance, so when the woman walked in all she could see was Ashley's shoulder leaning against the sofa.

“Your mom came and you didn't even bother to greet her,” the woman walked over with a sharp sentence.

“I'm sorry, Mom,” Ashley tried to stand up as soon as possible.

But just as she was trying to lift herself up with her hands clinging to the sofa's arms to support her weight, her mother had already arrived in front of her.

“What happened to you?” The woman looked at the condition of Ashley's body that was filled with wet scratches and blue bruises around her. "It’s okay. No need to stand up." Her tone of voice was still sharp, but her originally annoyed expression became a little softer. She took a place on the single sofa that was quite far away from Ashley.

Meanwhile, Ashley, after hearing her mother's instructions, sat back down and immediately fixed her position despite the difficulty. She endured the pain as much as she could and kept her face calm without showing too much expression of pain, because she was afraid that it would annoy her mother even more.

Because right now she understood very well why her mother had come in with a face that was bent sourly like that. She must have felt Ashley had lied to her by saying she was home alone while Josh went out. It was enough to ruin her mother's mood as Ashley seemed to ruin her plans on purpose.

“I fell yesterday, while dodging a car,” Ashley answered after managing to sit back comfortably.

"Fell? Why? What happened?" Josh's mom who followed behind chimed in after hearing Ashley speak.

Ashley suddenly looked back in surprise at the sound of her mother-in-law's voice.

"Mom? I didn't know you were coming too—" Ashley said quietly while glancing at Josh who was walking behind her.

Josh caught Ashley's gaze at him, then shook his head very faintly. Giving an answer that he himself also didn't understand what exactly happened and what kind of situation this was.

Josh's mother turned around to go to Ashley and check on her condition. She sat next to Ashley as she stared at her with wide eyes. As if she was witnessing a horror when she saw the wounds that adorned the girl's body, she couldn't utter a single word. Her mouth gaped, her forehead furrowed, and her head repeatedly shook in disbelief at the condition of her daughter-in-law's skin.

Ashley probably didn't realize what Josh's mother was thinking at that moment. She even thought that the woman was shocked and sad for her. But Ashley's mother, who has a sharper and more complex logic, felt that she could translate the uncomfortable gesture shown blatantly by her in-laws.

"It's actually quite a long story. But what is clear is that I fell by myself to avoid a car. The car didn't hit me at all."

"The owner of the car has taken responsibility, right? Should we sue him?" Josh's mother spoke artificially like she was upset.

"I don't think there's any need for that, Mom. It's all done well anyway."

“But you're okay?” Josh's mother swept her gaze over her youngest son in astonishment.

“What am I supposed to do?” Josh asked innocently not understanding where his mother was going with this.

“You're not hurt at all,” Josh's mother replied, “How did it happen?” she looked at Josh and Ashley in turn for an explanation.

“Ngg,” Ashley was forced to volunteer to explain everything, "Josh wasn't with me yesterday. I... went alone," Ashley spoke as she racked her brain quickly to come up with an excuse that wouldn't make Josh's mom or her mom suspicious of why Ashley went alone. "I wanted to go get a snack at the convenience store near the big road ahead. It was very close... so I didn't take Josh with me."

Ashley's mom was seen narrowing her eyes in silence, while Josh's mom immediately sighed and said “Oh my Goodness... oh my Goodness” repeatedly.

“I'm sorry,” Josh said, "I shouldn't have let her go alone. I feel so sorry."

“Even though you didn't get hit, it still turned out this way,” Josh's mother swept Ashley's injuries again from top to bottom with a judgmental gaze. “You should still be held accountable.”

"There's no need to make a scene or expose everything. If it can be settled quietly, it will be better for all of our reputations. There's no need to make a big deal out of something that can be made small," Ashley’s mother stepped into the debate and ended it with a unanimous decision.

“Yes, there's no need, Mom,” Ashley corroborated Josh and her mother's statements to dissuade Josh's mother. "It's my fault for being careless. I crossed the road in a hurry and didn't realize the lights were back on. So I fell down. Besides, the owner of the car—" Ashley suddenly stopped her sentence.

She thought for a moment whether she should mention Jason's name or not. She hadn't even gotten around to telling Josh that the people involved in yesterday's incident with her were Jason and an old woman who had been mugged. If she told all of that right now, to everyone here, it might cause her even more trouble. She didn't know what Josh might think after knowing that Jason was with her yesterday but didn't show his face at all. And the old woman she helped might get into trouble considering how her mother and Josh's mother acted.

If she told them the whole chronology honestly, then calming down and conducive the situation between the three people in front of her, it would be very troublesome for her. Moreover, Josh's mother now seemed eager to teach a lesson to the car owner who turned out to be her eldest son. Ashley couldn't bear to imagine Josh's mother's reaction if she found out about it. She also wasn't that crazy about embarrassing her mother-in-law.

“Why?”

“Why?”

Josh and Josh's mother asked almost simultaneously because Ashley was silent for quite a while.

Ashley blinked, "The owner of the car is very kind. Even though it wasn't his fault, he helped me get to the hospital yesterday. He even drove me home safely. So everything is taken care of."

And she wasn't lying. Ashley did tell the truth, just in a shorter version.

"That's all right. Now your body must be hurting all over," Josh's mom frowned as she pointed at the widest wound and the bluest bruise.

"Yeah. But I've been taking the medicine regularly, so it's not too painful."

“But still, these wounds—” Josh's mother wanted to continue her sentence—to express how much she was troubled by the unpleasant appearance of Ashley's skin—but she was unsure of the good words to say.

"You should have told me about this when I called. Why not speak frankly?" Ashley's mother deliberately interrupted.

“I just didn't want to worry you,” Ashley answered briefly. A statement that sounded reasonable for others to digest, although the real reason she didn't say it was because she couldn't bear to hear her mother scolding her twice. Because if she had answered right away when they were talking on the phone, her mother would have scolded her at length right then and continued again when they met in person. So it would be better to tell her now, so that the anger she received would only be once.

"I see... But you should be more careful. You've only been married a few days, but look at your skin, my Goodness..." Josh's mother shuddered.

Josh was true to his word to Sharon. That he would stay near her all the time.He didn't dare to go anywhere at all. Even when he needed to take a shower, he would choose a time when Sharon was sleeping. Even so, he still couldn't leave the girl for too long as he cleaned up as quickly as he could. Guilt and regret gnawed at his heart fiercely. Until his subconscious seemed to make him feel guilty if he relaxed his supervision of Sharon. His days during Sharon's stay in the hospital were spent only accompanying and caring for the girl. Josh left all work matters to his deputy and secretary completely without wanting to be disturbed or bothered. He didn't even think of contacting Ashley. His communication with Ashley completely stopped after the conversation on the phone when he asked for that girl’s help to pack his clothes.Anyone who knew this would definitely think that Josh was crazy. But the truth is that he was crazy. He couldn't forgive himself for almost taking the life of his

There was a brief moment of awkwardness before they ended their brief conversation.Josh knew he was guilty of not being able to keep the promise he had made. And Ashley was probably having a hard time yesterday to bear it all by herself without knowing why and what happened because Josh didn't inform her at all. But yesterday was really too difficult and complicated for him. He didn't even remember the lunch appointment with his mother-in-law until just a few moments ago when he saw Ashley's figure. The incident with Sharon had completely taken away all of his sanity. And it was all beyond his control. Clearly, at the moment, Josh still couldn't divide his mind to resolve what happened between him and Ashley. Because his heart and mind are still full of regret and guilt that feels very excruciating.Later. Later, when Sharon's condition was stable enough and the situation he was facing was calm again, he would try to explain it slowly to Ashley. He thought Ashley would understand be

At first, Josh thought he had misheard. But the distance between where Ashley was sitting and the door of the room was not far. And the room wasn't that big either. So it was enough to allow him to hear any sound that came from inside, even if it was a bit soft.Josh tilted his head again while looking through the clear glass on the door. From where he was, he could only see Ashley's back. The face and figure lying in front of the girl was covered by her body. But several medical machines and many cords that looked interconnected and hanging there were quite clearly visible. Also some of the little things the girl did—rubbing the face of the patient lying there, and adjusting the patient's clothes and blanket—could be clearly captured by his eyes. Ashley’s words that she spoke again could also be heard well by Josh's ears.“I know I shouldn't have complained to you. But now, no one can listen to me, Mom. In the past, there was Mrs. Go who was always the one I talked to about things. S

PRESENT DAY“Thank you Mr. Jung,” Josh took the small paper bag that his secretary handed him. This morning he realized that he had gone out yesterday without his cell phone. The panic that attacked him due to the incident with Sharon automatically blinded and dulled all his thoughts and common sense. The last time he held his cell phone was in his room before the meeting. He turned off the voice mode and put his cell phone in the drawer because he felt too dizzy to face Sharon. Little did he know that he would be forced to accept the enormous consequences of his actions.Regret still hung around, shaking, and terrorizing him until this moment. And he allowed himself to be gnawed by it. Because he thought he deserved to be tortured by the pain that was brutally punching him in his heart and head. Even if he punched himself physically for punishment, it felt like it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he had done. Josh would never be able to forgive himself. For if only, yesterday h

Ashley searched through tons of articles about her family, Josh's family, and what incidents had happened all this time.Ever since she was forced to return to Auckland, the pain in her heart made her not want to know anything about anything concerning her family. She seemed to leave everything behind. That's why she really didn't know anything. Her head was throbbing with pain when she finally ended her search and closed her phone. The news she had just gotten made her shoulders slump instantly. It was as if her energy and life had evaporated without a trace.Until a knock on her bedroom door finally woke Ashley up from her empty reverie."Miss, it's me. I brought you a snack."Mrs. Go's voice came from behind the door.“Yes, come in,” Ashley said, and the woman walked in.She walked over to Ashley who was sitting in front of her dressing table. She placed the tray she was carrying on the empty part of the table."You didn't come down for breakfast earlier. Mrs. Gu got nagged because

Ashley jerked her head as she almost thought what she just heard was wrong.“I had no intention of refusing this marriage plan from the start.”“Wait,” Ashley felt her throat become very bitter and dry instantly, “You want to do this marriage?”“Yes” Josh then split the crab stuffed mushroom on his plate into two small pieces and ate it. Ignoring Ashley's gaze who was still stunned by his answer just now."Why? We don't know each other that well. Haven't seen each other in a very long time. I'm also sure you don't like me.""We can take things slowly. And I think our history is more than enough to start a relationship. There have been no fights or problems between us as long as I can remember, right?"Josh was wrong. The man was lying as if Ashley didn't know about an incident in the past that could pretty well illustrate how cold Josh felt towards her. And that created a big problem for Ashley having to bear the pain alone.Ashley sank into her confusion again, then mumbled without f

Ashley was stunned for a long time. And when Josh moved to move the chair back so she could sit down, that's when she returned to her senses. Her legs automatically moved closer to sit on the chair. She quietly inhaled and exhaled very slowly and carefully.Behind her confusion and nervousness that suddenly attacked her, there was a very odd feeling that somehow also sneaked into her heart at that moment. How could someone she once liked, who had never seen her as a girl, who she wanted to forget... was now sitting in front of her as her future husband.Josh returned to his seat across from Ashley, still with his thin smile that was hard to translate. “I've ordered food,” he raised his hand as he turned to one of the waiters standing not far from them for a signal. The waiter who caught Josh's instruction responded with a small nod and disappeared into a doorway.“Your favorite signature set,” Josh continued.Ashley, who had been following Josh's gaze, turned her head and looked at h

As promised, before five o'clock Mrs. Go was knocking on Ashley's door again. They said they were giving her time to rest. But before that she had been buried with a pile of big problems first. So how could she rest?Even just lying down and closing her eyes was impossible. Her head ached from the effects of the journey as well as being overwhelmed by the sentences written in the document. Meanwhile, her body continued to move restlessly with a sense of anxiety that she could not describe the excruciating sensation. After trying to lie down for almost half an hour and failing, Ashley got up and sat down again. Her eyes stared at the front cover of the folder and drifted into a blank reverie. Her head did feel full. But something inside didn't take shape at all. Everything was abstract and hard to decipher.Yet, she was not considering anything. Because there was nothing for her to consider. Everything her parents proposed was an order and a threat, not an offer. There was no way for h

Ashley was speechless. She was only able to stare at her mother who walked away fiercely. Even until the woman disappeared behind the majestic main door, she still looked there. It was as if the empty air had left a trace of her mother's sadism. It was only when the silhouette of Mrs. Go re-entering the house filled her vision that she came to her senses and quickly returned to the pages of documents. Her eyes twitched furiously as she continued the last sentence she had left. Her head lowered deeply to read it more clearly. As if to make sure all the series of letters he saw were not mere illusions.Word by word, sentence by sentence. Ashley read, combined, and deduced the meaning of everything written there. She forced her focus to be fully devoted to understanding all the articles of the agreement without misinterpreting them.“Miss,” Mrs. Go leaned over slightly to interrupt Ashley's focus, “I'll get a pen and your personal stamp.”“W-wait a minute,” Ashley suddenly raised her pal
