48. Wake Up in Pain

Ashley woke up just as the pain in her body returned to her.

Last night, she managed to sleep after the medicine she took worked on her body-drastically reducing the pain and making her sleepy. But perhaps now the effect had faded and perhaps it was almost gone because Ashley felt the sensation that slashed and burned her skin again attacking her relentlessly.

Her forehead was in a deep frown. And a low moan she couldn't help but let out of her mouth.

The lighting in the room was still dim. And when she looked at the sofa by the window, Josh was still sleeping in a position that looked uncomfortable. The sofa was not long. So that man had to lie curved while hugging his own knees, exactly like the fetal position.

She then reached out her hand to move the table clock to allow her to check what time it was. With all her might, Ashley tried to move even though her body was crumbling. It was a thousand times more excruciating than a few days ago when she slept sitting up.

Her eyes squinted to see between the minimal lighting. And the cube-shaped clock showed 9:05 am.

Apparently she had managed to get enough sleep due to the effects of the medicine, but not long enough to relax her muscles that were again tense from the bumps and scrapes on the road surface. It felt like her efforts to make herself comfortable by spending time at the massage place until that night had been in vain. The relaxation effect had now completely evaporated without remaining.

Ashley thought if she had to take the medicine again to get the pain-relieving effect in order to rest again comfortably. It would be great if she could continue to sleep peacefully again without interruption and without interruptions from those senseless bursts of pain.

So immediately, she tried to rise very carefully and very slowly. For every time she moved, the pain, which was now accompanied by a stiff sensation tugging at her skin, would intensify. She even needed to stop several times to let the pain evaporate on its own. After the pain subsided, Ashley tried again to make herself sit up by supporting her body with her wound-free hand.

She turned her head to look around for the whereabouts of her medicine from last night. As she remembered, Josh took care of it as soon as she finished taking the medicine. And for some reason it didn't occur to her at all to check where he had put it.

There was nothing on the nightstand. The bed wasn't there either. Ashley continued to sweep the entire room as best she could in the limited light.

She did that for a long time. Squinting her eyes and forcing them to see more sharply. But all she felt after that was nausea and dizziness.

Ashley let out her breath roughly. She was frustrated.

The torment she received because of the wounds had to be relieved immediately, but she was having trouble finding a medicine that could help her out of that misery.

Finally after thinking hard, trying to strengthen her body to get out of bed but failing because it was too painful, thinking hard again, weighing some things, then reconsidering some things, Ashley gave up. She felt she had to put her ego aside and ask Josh for help.

“Josh,” her attempt to call the first one was audible—barely audible actually.

Ashley was really trying to fight the battle to defeat her ego by having the courage to call out to him more clearly. Instead of swallowing her voice, she chose to try to swallow her high once again. “Josh. Josh.” And what came out of his mouth was still no better than before. It was still similar to hisses and whispers. While the distance between her bed and the sofa was almost three meters away.

She closed her eyes and took a long, deep breath. Then in one breath, she called out to the man again in a shout. “Josh!”

There was still no sign of him waking up.

Ashley shouted again. This time louder and louder. “Joshua Lim!”

And the man seemed to flinch slightly. His call last time was indeed quite thunderous-created from the frustration of not being able to bear the pain in his entire body anymore. It was actually quite natural to wake up all the residents on the same floor as her residence.

From where Ashley was, she could see Josh slowly getting up and looking at her. The man frowned, rubbed his eyes, and massaged the bridge of his nose between his eyes before finally making a sound. “You called me? Did you just yell?”

“Yes.”

“Why? Are you in pain?” The creases on his forehead deepened-half from trying to shake off the sleepiness that was still hanging around and making his eyes feel very heavy, and half from curiosity as to why she was screaming so early.

“Where did you keep my medicine last night? Can you please find it? I need to take it right away,” Ashley explained as clearly and concisely as possible.

“Ah. I think I put it here,” Josh, with his consciousness still not fully gathered, got up from his seat and fumbled with the small table in front of the sofa. “Is it time to take your medicine? What time is it?”

After several failed attempts to locate the plastic bag, as Josh himself couldn't quite remember where he had placed it, his hand finally managed to find a plastic bag. He picked it up and brought it to a brighter spot to make sure.

“What time is it?” Josh asked again without receiving an answer.

Ashley was still sitting on the bed focusing on her own pain.

Josh, with unsteady steps walked over to the light switch and turned it on. Making the room brightly lit instantly. He approached Ashley to hand her the plastic bag containing her medicines.

“Is the wound that painful?” Josh asked when he saw Ashley lowering her face with her eyes closed tightly, as if she was actually in great pain. “Wait a minute, I'll get some water first.”

Josh left and returned with a glass of water in no time. He waited until Ashley had finished eating all the medicines and then helped the girl to lie back comfortably.

“Rest for a while. I'll get some food for you first.”

“No need. I'm not hungry.”

“Hungry or not hungry you still have to eat. You took all those medicines on an empty stomach. If you don't eat, your stomach will hurt a lot later.”

Ashley was silent. She closed her eyes without wanting to respond to him with any verbal rebuttal. But in her heart, she grumbled and then tried to remind herself to calm down and ignore everything just as Josh was leaving the bedroom.

'Whatever. Whatever he wants to do. I don't care. I don't have the energy to fight. I just want to get rid of this pain as soon as possible.'

After the drugs took effect and affected her body, Ashley slowly started to get sleepy again. As the pain in her whole body gradually subsided, she fell back into a deep dreamland.Meanwhile, Josh went to the living room with his cell phone with him.He plopped down on the long sofa and opened the delivery app. He sifted through the restaurants for a while before finally choosing a menu and placing his order. While waiting for it to arrive, he took the initiative to send a few messages to Sharon. This time without being burdened by the shadow of worry or fear, because he had already found half the solution to his relationship with Sharon. The two of them messaged each other, exchanging sweet words, expressing their longing, until the impromptu idea of meeting out of the Hana town that day. Then the doorbell rang. ”Well, um, yeah,“ Ashley glanced at Josh again, thinking of an excuse that sounded plausible as soon as possible, ”It was office business. Something urgent. That's why he said he'd only be gone for a while."“Alright,” came a short sigh from the sound of her mother's breathing, "And you, you better have a pretty good reason for refusing to meet me outside. I won't tolerate it if you get into mischief. Nor will I defend you if your father gets angry.""No, mom. It's not about something bad like what you think."“Okay.”As soon as Ashley hung up, Josh started asking questions. Because the girl's words that she said to her mother made his curiosity multiply into even more.Starting from what made Mrs. Ashley sound so eager to meet the girl. Why did she insist on meeting today. And why Ashley lied that he was going out for office business.“Your mom wants to see you? She's coming here?” His sentence came quickly—reflecting his curiosity that also wanted to be answered quickly.Ashley nodd

Ashley couldn't imagine having to face another problem. She was already too tired and sick of it all. There was no way she was inviting another problem to clog her head even more.So she endured it. Enduring the excruciating pain, as well as enduring the resentment in her heart for having to go through so many things that she never wanted to happen to her.Trying her best to move slowly and carefully, it took Ashley almost twenty minutes alone to take off all her clothes one by one-including the rest breaks she needed to ease the pain. Then calculatingly, she seated herself on the edge of the tub deck close to the handheld shower. She stretched out her healthy hand to unscrew the device, turned it on, and adjusted it so that the water coming out of it gushed gently. She began to wet her body except for the injured parts of her right hand and foot. Even so, she still could not prevent the water from splashing out altogether. Some of her wounds, which were still wet, stung even more fro

Josh felt that he was very powerful right now, as he had a lot of control over both Ashley and Sharon."Calm down. Sharon must be having fun right now. She's my business anyway, you don't need to think about us. Also, as I said earlier, you don't need to bother or think about finding a deal for that matter. And yes, I'm sure you wouldn't badmouth me to your mother."Josh finished his speech with great satisfaction. From now on, to him, Ashley's threats were just empty bluster with no power. Because in the end, the girl would be able to do nothing but stay in this marriage with him. Even if Ashley was desperate to destroy Josh's reputation to his family, in the end, the one who would get into trouble would be herself, not Josh. From the articles he read in the document hidden by Ashley yesterday, it was enough to show that the rumors circulating about the relationship between Ashley and her parents were not good, it was almost one hundred percent true.It made Josh guess what steps Ash

“Does it hurt?”“It hurts...” Ashley groaned with a grimace. Her eyes were closed tightly as she couldn't bear the onslaught of pain that felt like thousands of sharp needles digging into her skin.Josh couldn't bear to look at the girl. "Should I stop? What if this medicine doesn't need to be applied? I think drinking medicine is enough to treat it from the inside?" he asked hesitantly, not really understanding medical issues like this. He even knew the order in which the topical medicines were to be applied because he had read the written instructions on the package yesterday.Meanwhile, Ashley, whose medical knowledge was also not better than the man's, did not know what to answer. As soon as the stabbing pain faded a little, she even told Josh to continue administering the medicine. "Don't. They gave it to me because I have to use it. Just apply it, but not too much, and—maybe you can do it quickly so that the pain can happen all at once? So that I don't have to hold it in for too

Ashley was sitting on the sofa in the living room when her mother came in. The spot where she was sitting had its back to the corridor that connected the rest of the room to the main entrance, so when the woman walked in all she could see was Ashley's shoulder leaning against the sofa.“Your mom came and you didn't even bother to greet her,” the woman walked over with a sharp sentence.“I'm sorry, Mom,” Ashley tried to stand up as soon as possible. But just as she was trying to lift herself up with her hands clinging to the sofa's arms to support her weight, her mother had already arrived in front of her.“What happened to you?” The woman looked at the condition of Ashley's body that was filled with wet scratches and blue bruises around her. "It’s okay. No need to stand up." Her tone of voice was still sharp, but her originally annoyed expression became a little softer. She took a place on the single sofa that was quite far away from Ashley.Meanwhile, Ashley, after hearing her mother

Ashley's scratches are indeed quite severe because they are quite numerous, spreading across her hands and legs on her right side. It is natural to make anyone who sees it cringe or even think it is disgusting. Plus imagining that after the wounds healed, the scars would probably be even more horrifying.Meanwhile, Ashley's mother, who witnessed it all, felt the need to put an end to the unpleasant attitude that Josh's mother was showing towards her daughter."It doesn't matter. Go to our family dermatologist once your body feels better. She'll help your wounds dry properly and make them heal without any marks."“Without a mark?” Josh's mother was surprised and quite curious about the statement she had just heard. How could such a large number of wounds heal without a mark? “Is that really possible?”“Of course,” Ashley's mother answered flatly but firmly, "She is a renowned expert in her work. Once they had finished eating all the lunch dishes with some small talk, Ashley's mother finally brought up Josh's departure. She wanted to set up a scenario where Josh could leave while also taking his mother out of the house. So that she could have a little time to talk about private matters that neither Josh nor his mother could hear."Why didn't you go? Ashley said that you had some very important office business.""That's right. What business is it that you have to go anyway? They should know that you're on leave, right?" Josh's mother was quite anxious due to yesterday's incident which worried her quite a bit.Josh knew his mom was worried about him acting up and going back to Sharon. But he tried to answer as nicely and calmly as possible, "It's about the project that's going to be launched next month. The office is quite busy so I had to step in. Ashley regained her self-control after letting her emotions out through crying in one of the restaurant's private dining rooms. The crying was quite intense. But she did her best to muffle her voice, until all she could hear was a low, stifled shriek. Her tears overflowed. Her chest was tight. And her eyes were swollen after all the turmoil she had let out until there was nothing left. It was as if all the inner wounds that she had been suppressing, spilled out all at once without mercy.Someone might have heard her from outside. The waitress passing by might also want to go in and check the noise she was making. But Ashley couldn't hold back the explosion of anger and sadness that was clogging up her chest. She didn't even care about manners or shame anymore. After a while, she cleaned her face and slightly fixed her light makeup before exiting the room. Although the polish still couldn't cover her red and very puffy eyes. She took a deep breath before pushing open the door, hoping t

That afternoon, Ashley couldn't even look her parents in the face. The atmosphere between them became even more tense after Ashley went back inside, when she told them that Josh suddenly couldn't make it.“So, he's not coming anymore?” Ashley’s mother asked while stirring the soup that was already halfway in her small bowl."Yes. But it's not just because of his will. Suddenly there are a lot of urgent things he needs to get done for the launch of his project."Even when Ashley tried to convince her parents that Josh sounded really sorry for not being able to come and that what was preventing him was really office business that couldn't be left unattended, her mother's face just looked even more disgusted.Ashley was terrified that her lie would be caught, so she continued to earnestly try to tell all sorts of other lies, whatever came to mind, just to convince and lessen her parents' annoyance."That's twice already. Somun held his stomach as he tried to stop laughing. "Okay, okay. So what's your great plan?""I'll pretend to kill myself... But not pretend. Pretend, but not fake," Sharon tried to emphasize her most important point. “So, I'm going to really cut myself, but not so deep that I can't actually die.” she automatically demonstrated the motion of slicing her wrist with the knife she was holding. "That's why I need you here. You're in charge of taking me straight to the hospital as soon as I cut myself so that I can get medical attention quickly. After that, you also have to tell Josh that I'm in serious condition. Since he won't pick up my calls at all, you'll have to send word through his office phone. How?" Sharon's eyes looked serious as she explained her plan.Somun, however, went from underestimating it to thinking it was total nonsense. Because there was also a hint of worry that suddenly came to him."Crazy! The risk is too great. What if you really die before reaching the hospital

Sharon walked back and forth in her spacious living room with her cell phone held firmly in her hand. Occasionally, she frowned as she checked her silent cell phone. Then she walked back and forth again around the room. Checking the time of day, pacing again while seemingly deep in thought, and checking her cell phone again for the umpteenth time. But her messages and incoming calls remained the same as before. There was absolutely nothing new.Worst of all, her face would grow a thousand times more sour every time her outgoing calls went unanswered, and none of her messages were read by the recipient—Josh.“Wow, this is funny,” Somun, who was sitting casually with his legs crossed, was confused by Sharon's behavior. “Sir,” a voice sounded in the distance. “Sir, excuse me, sir,” the voice came closer and clearer. “Sir!” then it sounded louder and more firm in his ears.Josh was shocked because when he opened his eyes he saw Mr. Jung—his secretary—looking at him in the face.Josh gasped and tried to sit up. He lifted his head and lowered his legs that had been bent overnight. His neck was stiff because he had fallen asleep on the short sofa in his office, so his head bent uncomfortably.“Are you staying here, Sir?” Mr. Jung looked surprised from the expression on his face. "Today we have a morning meeting with all the divisions.” The man immediately recited Josh's schedule report—as if it was automatic because it had become a habit in doing his work. “Are you going home first to get ready? Would you like me to make you some coffee?“Josh rubbed his eyes and massaged his forehead. ”I don't think so. I'll just take a shower here. When is the meeting?""It's still about two hours away. At that moment, Sharon was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at him with a panicked look in her eyes. She was only wearing an inner blouse with the outer—she had been wearing when she met Josh this afternoon—lying by the door, near Josh's feet. And there was no denying that Sharon's hair was a mess. Other than that, Josh couldn't afford to wander any further to check what else was wrong in the room.Even when he saw the silhouette of another man leaning against the window while busy putting on his shirt, Josh averted his eyes and turned away. He walked with very heavy and unsteady footsteps and sat down on the sofa in the living room.Sharon, with panic filling her whole being, glared at that man while whispering to him to tidy up quickly and get out.Her hands haphazardly adjusted all her clothes, brushed her hair casually, and wiped her lips carelessly. After a heated argument and Josh's yelling which turned out to be quite traumatizing for Ashley, they didn't speak to each other at all. The short drive to the hospital felt like an uncomfortably long one. The air in their car was cold, but what Josh and Ashley felt was stuffy and claustrophobic. But after all, they were two adults who needed to take responsibility and control their behavior. They both knew they had to calm their hearts and cool their heads in front of Ashley's mother and her business partner later. Because if they were to clearly show the atmosphere of their quarrel in front of others, it would only invite more problems—Ashley's mother would become even more suspicious of Josh, and what if she found out what Josh had done? He, and his family, would be finished right then and there. And it all happened just because of his carelessness. This, for Josh, was like a vicious circle that was increasingly entangling him.
