Ashley spoke passionately, but her voice caught in her throat, suddenly dry and tight, cutting off her words. And because it was uncomfortable, she was busy clearing her throat.

Josh watched her patiently. When she fell silent, struggling to continue, he finally spoke.

“I just don’t want any more misunderstandings between us. And,” he sighed, “I don’t like being seen as a jerk. I'm also sorry for not telling you about my relationship. But clearly, I didn't lie.”

"You didn't lie? How can you say that after what I saw?"

"I never said I was single. You never asked either, did you? So technically, I didn't lie."

Ashley looked at him with a scornful glare. Unbelievable. This man could twist words and manipulate situations so smoothly, so cunningly.

“I didn’t even know whether you were single or had a boyfriend,” Josh narrowed his eyes, locking his gaze onto Ashley's. "Or maybe you have a boyfriend too and just didn’t tell me?"

"As if! I’m a woman with morals. There’s no way I would agree to marry someone if I had a boyfriend."

"Ah, so you’re single. Good."

Once again, that faint, unreadable smile played on Josh’s lips.

“Are you mad because I didn’t tell you that?”

Ashley tilted her head. “Of course. Who wouldn’t be angry about something like that?”

“But it didn’t hurt you, did it?” Josh asked, his voice calm. “It didn’t actually do anything harm to you. Or am I wrong for thinking that?”

Ashley hesitated. He was playing word games with her. But remembering her goal—to win every argument tonight—she steadied herself and pushed forward.

“Of course you’re wrong. It cost me a lot. We never agreed to have a scandal in this marriage. And the fact that you were with her at the wedding venue, in front of guests, makes it even worse. What if one of them was a reporter or someone from a media company?” She shook her head, frustration clear in her voice. The thought of the consequences made her stomach tighten.

“So doesn’t it make sense for me to be angry?” She lifted her chin. “Because you put both our families’ reputations at risk.”

Josh exhaled heavily. “I know. I wasn’t careful.”

He shouldn’t have done it. It was reckless—too risky. But he hadn’t been thinking about that. He just couldn't let Sharon wander around alone in such an unstable condition. At that time, he could only think about how to immediately calm her and convince the girl to return home without being caught by anyone.

But who would’ve thought, if they would be caught by Ashley herself?

“Hm. Yeah. You weren’t careful at all.”

Josh nodded slightly, accepting her words. But then, he glanced at her, curiosity flickering in his eyes. “But what does this have to do with divorce? Why bring it up so suddenly?”

That’s right. Where did that come from? How did she suddenly come up with the idea of offering a divorce? Did she say it out of anger? Because she caught Josh having a girlfriend while in her heart she might have expected something more in this marriage?

“Well—yeah,” Ashley hesitated, trying to mask the deep contemplation in her eyes, but Josh saw through it.

She retraced her own thoughts, realizing that, yes, her anger had fueled the words—but the idea itself had come from something deeper. A chance. An opportunity to free and save herself from the deal with her family. Also from a marriage that already seemed destined to be miserable and exhausting.

And Josh’s affair? That was just an added burden for her as she had to participate in keeping it as a secret.

The slightest bit of bad news would affect the stock of his family's company. And who knows what her parents would do to her if it happened because of a scandal in her marriage. She had already endured enough hardships on her own. So it seemed like, if she were to receive punishment for a mistake she didn't make, she wouldn't be able to accept it gracefully.

But then again, getting a divorce so soon after the wedding wouldn’t be a good move either. Such a thing would somehow invite speculation and give birth to a wave of uncontrollable rumors. In other words, it would lead to an equally bad ending as the media found out about Josh's scandal.

Either way, there was no escape.

That’s why she had brought up the divorce.

A fake marriage was one thing. But a fake marriage with the added weight of covering up Josh’s affair? That was something she could only tolerate temporarily. But not forever.

Yes. That was it.

“So—”

“Don’t mention it again,” Josh said almost simultaneously with Ashley.

They both glanced at each other and paused, momentarily caught off guard by speaking at the same time. They waited for each other to continue, but Ashley was still silent in hesitation, so Josh quickly clarified, “From now on, I don’t want to hear anything about divorce.”

Ashley frowned. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, I don’t want you mentioning divorce again.”

Before she could respond, Josh’s phone lit up on the table. He glanced at the screen, stood up to grab it, then sat back down, already unlocking the device.

Ashley narrowed her eyes. “I haven’t even explained yet. Shouldn’t you at least listen?”

Josh barely looked up. “Explain?” His voice was casual, distracted. His focus had now shifted almost completely. It was on the screen now—on Sharon’s messages.

Finally, Sharon had responded.

Relief washed over him as he scanned the texts. Although he was sure, the girl's emotions would not subside that easily. Especially if the trigger was something that was not difficult to tolerate—letting her boyfriend marry someone else and having to live the relationship secretly.

She was still upset—of course, she was—but at least now he knew the girl's condition and what she was thinking.

“You asked a question earlier. Now I want to answer it.”

He quickly began typing a reply message, telling her that he had been sitting alone in the living room, waiting anxiously to hear from her. That he had hated seeing her storm off in anger, unable to stop her. And ended with his usual words of affection.

“Hey!” Ashley’s sharp voice cut through his focus.

He looked up. His eyes glanced at the girl who was staring at him intently.“Ah—Yes?” Josh stopped typing, leaving the sentence he hadn't finished. “Go ahead. I’m listening.”Ashley scoffed. “Are you sure? I don’t think so,” Ashley's tone sounded mocking, “You probably don’t even remember what we were talking about.”At the same time Josh also noticed Ashley deliberately glancing at the cell phone that was in her hand. So he put his phone down.“Oh really?” her tone is still the same.Josh sighed, rubbing his temple. “I’m listening, Ashley. You were explaining why you suddenly want a divorce when you've never thought about it before.”“Yes. Huh—no, no,” Ashley hurriedly corrected herself. “Who said I just thought of it now? Of course, I’ve thought about it. Who in their right mind would want to be stuck forever in a fake, business marriage like this?”Josh raised an eyebrow. He never thought Ashley would describe their marriage in such a variety of terms. It made him want to confront

Josh realized that if their conversation continued, it would only go around in circles without being resolved. Ashley didn’t seem to be in the mood to forgive him, and she certainly wasn’t about to agree to his request. Yet that was the core of the problem—where Ashley had found out he was in a relationship with another girl.Maybe, it had crossed his mind that if Ashley knew, there would be a price to pay. Because she was going to live this marriage like a real marriage—as her mother always insisted. But he hadn’t expected to get caught this quickly. And now, he might be paying a bigger price than he had ever anticipated.Because once trust is broken, piecing it back together is harder than fixing shattered glass.Josh finally broke the silence. “What if I apologize for everything? For everything that made you angry?”Ashley lifted her head and looked at him.“And what would I get in return for forgiving you?” she asked. “You’re only apologizing because you don’t want me exposing you

The abandoned Ashley sat stunned in her chair.A hollow breath escaped her lips. She felt her resentment surging again and was hard to contain. That man had harassed her, and now he was insulting her by leaving her just like that—on a day like this. Not that she expected him to stay to accompany her, no. But at the very least, he could have had a bit of common sense. A little logic. What if an acquaintance saw him wandering around outside? He had just apologized, and had just promised to be more careful. But the moment that girl appeared, he forgot everything and rushed to meet her. Completely wishy-washy and thoughtless. It was a wonder how he had survived this long with such a mindset. She had heard he was very intelligent. Even among his older brother and sister—both were famously skilled in politics, following in their father's footsteps—Josh was said to be even better. That’s why he was able to establish his own company. And it was not wrong though. As she remembered back when th

Her face looks melting with satisfaction. She said spicy flavors helped relieve emotions. It triggered certain nerves, making the brain feel more relaxed and happy. The effect, supposedly, was as powerful as drinking or eating something sweet.‘At this hour, something soupy seemed much more appealing instead of ice cream,’ Ashley thought. Her eyes suddenly glanced at the clock on the wall. It showed past 2 AM."It's almost morning," she muttered. Her stomach was also hungry because she hadn't eaten dinner yet. Her last meal was a light snack at her wedding party this afternoon. She even had to swallow with difficulty due to being under a chaotic feeling."Hh... I really want t

Josh only smiled slightly. Somehow, his heart felt heavy at the thought of giving in to Sharon’s wishes. He didn’t have the energy, to be honest, with her. His body and mind were completely drained from dealing with problems he never expected. On top of that, he worried that if any trace of Ashley’s scent still lingered on his clothes, Sharon would definitely notice.A quiet sigh escaped his nose. His fingers, which had been gently caressing her cheek, now traced down to her full, red lips.“Do you want to do it?”Even so, he couldn’t bring himself to reject her outright. He had already hurt her enough by betraying her—by marrying another woman. Now he couldn't disappoint her more.Sharon grabbed Josh wrist and kissed his thumb. “I don’t know. I’m just not in the mood. I’d rather hit you than sleep with you.”Josh tilted his head spontaneously. Quite amazed that the girl wasn't excited. Ashley gasped. When she opened her eyes, she found herself still in the living room. In a very uncomfortable position—sitting with her left side of her face resting on the table. The sunlight had already poured in and illuminated the entire room through the large glass window from one end of the wall to the other. It made her frown several times because of the glare. But the bright sunlight that had risen was nothing compared to the pain that shot through her when she raised her head.A fierce, dull ache filled her neck and shoulders, radiating upwards to tingle all the nerves in her head and downward as if gripping her shoulders and back. Even after managing to sit upright, her head was still tilted to the right—it was extremely difficult and stiff to move it back to its normal position. Groans of pain escaped her lips, echoed repeatedly there, as she struggled until finally managed to make her head face forward.Even after succeeding, the groans of pain continued to slip from her m

"Huh... Um, girl..." Bella was heard exhaling lazily, "You need to remember that Mike is a grown man. There's no need to worry about him that much either.""Grown men can also meet bad people and get into trouble, right?" Ashley replied, not convinced.Bella paused for a moment and then said, "Yes, he is. But don't you see his rock-like muscles?""Why have big muscles if you can't fight? Don't you remember last year he got beat up by a high school kid?"Bella winced, then chuckled. "Ouch... If he hears it from you, his heart must be hurting."They burst out laughing together. After the laughter faded, Ashley sat down on the couch and leaned back. "The important thing is that you confirm his whereabouts and condition first."Bella's voice was not heard for a moment, "I don't think it's necessary. "Yes, right?""Yes.""Yes, that's also a reasonable reason, although I didn't think of it that way yesterday. But what I experienced last night was really confusing. And again, as far as I know, ghosts are not picky about places," Bella began to speak in a low tone and elongated speech. As if deliberately creating a tense atmosphere. "They can be anywhere they like. Not only in dark or dirty spaces. In fact, it is said that ghosts nowadays like to inhabit clean and luxurious places."Ashley frowned, "Nonsense. Who said that?"But Bella didn't change her expression. She resumed her speech and lowered her voice even more, "I've seen it on supernatural programs—that kind of thing. And you know what makes the most sense?" Bella narrowed her eyes, hung her words, then paused for a moment. Her eyes continued to stare at her best friend unblinkingly, with a face that was made completely serious and seemed to hold a mystery waiting to be spewed out.Meanwhile, Ashley automatically responded w

Somun held his stomach as he tried to stop laughing. "Okay, okay. So what's your great plan?""I'll pretend to kill myself... But not pretend. Pretend, but not fake," Sharon tried to emphasize her most important point. “So, I'm going to really cut myself, but not so deep that I can't actually die.” she automatically demonstrated the motion of slicing her wrist with the knife she was holding. "That's why I need you here. You're in charge of taking me straight to the hospital as soon as I cut myself so that I can get medical attention quickly. After that, you also have to tell Josh that I'm in serious condition. Since he won't pick up my calls at all, you'll have to send word through his office phone. How?" Sharon's eyes looked serious as she explained her plan.Somun, however, went from underestimating it to thinking it was total nonsense. Because there was also a hint of worry that suddenly came to him."Crazy! The risk is too great. What if you really die before reaching the hospital

Sharon walked back and forth in her spacious living room with her cell phone held firmly in her hand. Occasionally, she frowned as she checked her silent cell phone. Then she walked back and forth again around the room. Checking the time of day, pacing again while seemingly deep in thought, and checking her cell phone again for the umpteenth time. But her messages and incoming calls remained the same as before. There was absolutely nothing new.Worst of all, her face would grow a thousand times more sour every time her outgoing calls went unanswered, and none of her messages were read by the recipient—Josh.“Wow, this is funny,” Somun, who was sitting casually with his legs crossed, was confused by Sharon's behavior. "You sent me here just to see you acting... walking back and forth like that? You think I don't have more important things to do than just watching you do weird things like this?" His tone was high with annoyance.Sharon only glared at the man briefly, then growled angril

He lifted his head and lowered his legs that had been bent overnight. His neck was stiff because he had fallen asleep on the short sofa in his office, so his head bent uncomfortably.“Are you staying here, Sir?” Mr. Jung looked surprised from the expression on his face. "Today we have a morning meeting with all the divisions.” The man immediately recited Josh's schedule report—as if it was automatic because it had become a habit in doing his work. “Are you going home first to get ready? Would you like me to make you some coffee?“Josh rubbed his eyes and massaged his forehead. ”I don't think so. I'll just take a shower here. When is the meeting?""It's still about two hours away. At that moment, Sharon was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at him with a panicked look in her eyes. She was only wearing an inner blouse with the outer—she had been wearing when she met Josh this afternoon—lying by the door, near Josh's feet. And there was no denying that Sharon's hair was a mess. Other than that, Josh couldn't afford to wander any further to check what else was wrong in the room.Even when he saw the silhouette of another man leaning against the window while busy putting on his shirt, Josh averted his eyes and turned away. He walked with very heavy and unsteady footsteps and sat down on the sofa in the living room.Sharon, with panic filling her whole being, glared at that man while whispering to him to tidy up quickly and get out.Her hands haphazardly adjusted all her clothes, brushed her hair casually, and wiped her lips carelessly. After a heated argument and Josh's yelling which turned out to be quite traumatizing for Ashley, they didn't speak to each other at all. The short drive to the hospital felt like an uncomfortably long one. The air in their car was cold, but what Josh and Ashley felt was stuffy and claustrophobic. But after all, they were two adults who needed to take responsibility and control their behavior. They both knew they had to calm their hearts and cool their heads in front of Ashley's mother and her business partner later. Because if they were to clearly show the atmosphere of their quarrel in front of others, it would only invite more problems—Ashley's mother would become even more suspicious of Josh, and what if she found out what Josh had done? He, and his family, would be finished right then and there. And it all happened just because of his carelessness. This, for Josh, was like a vicious circle that was increasingly entangling him.
