Chapter 1

Author: Rainy Slumber
When Mary Anderson did not respond, John Anderson prodded her.

“Mom, why are you muttering to yourself? Quick!”

Then, we heard a soft female voice on the other end of the call.

“Mary, please don’t think that it’s expensive. It’s all for the baby!

“Any other mother-in-law would’ve already sent money over to support her son’s family when her daughter-in-law is pregnant. Why aren’t you doing the same?”

I could not help but frown. Just when I wanted to ask who she was, the call ended.

Mary was at a loss as she grabbed her phone.

“What’s going on?”

I sneered. I asked my assistant to locate John’s current location and immediately drove over.

On the way there, I discussed the matter with Mary.

The more we talked, the more the truth came to light. Over the years, John had claimed that he was traveling to the countryside to take care of Mary because she was ill. He had never made such a trip even once.

He had even told Mary that I disliked the countryside and had barred him from returning.

It was no wonder Mary never really spoke to me during festive seasons.

I walked into the empty building and raised my voice.

“John, where are you? Come out now!”

A woman walked out of a bedroom and stood before me.

“Who are you? Why are you looking for my husband?”

I stared at her. She was wearing a skimpy dress.

When she saw me, she purposely pulled up her hair and revealed the hickeys on her neck.

In a moment of recognition, I recalled that this woman was Gabby Smith, an intern in the company.

During her internship, she often got really close to John. I had been really uncomfortable with it.

I questioned John about it, but he simply said that I was overthinking.

He said that he was helping her because she had just started working, so he was afraid that her slow progress would hinder my work.

Her plight moved me, so I deliberately signed a few deals to improve her results.

I never once thought that I was helping my husband’s mistress.

Just as I was about to speak, Mary walked over and grabbed Gabby’s arm.

“Where’s John? I want to see him!”

Gabby was shocked.

When she saw Mary and her modest dressing, she slapped Mary in disdain.

With a loud slap, Mary fell to the floor.

“You old hag! Why are you touching me with your dirty hands?

“Security, someone’s trespassing here! Quick, escort them out!”

I helped Mary up and questioned her angrily.

“She’s John’s mother. How dare you hit her?”

Gabby was momentarily stunned.

Then, she laughed.

“My husband is a CEO. He’s worth millions of dollars. How could he possibly have such a poor mother? You should think it through before you lie!

“Get out before I lose my temper! Otherwise, I’m going to break your legs!”

Mary had never been treated so poorly in her life. She held her swollen cheek and was rendered completely speechless.

I was stunned by John’s shameless facade.

“What did you say? Did you say that John is a CEO?

“I’m going to call him right now and see if he still dares to claim that he’s a CEO, and that he’s married to you!”

Gabby saw me taking out my phone and immediately reached out to snatch it.

“My husband has nothing to do with you. He’s signing an agreement to purchase a house inside! Stop harassing us!”

The manager walked over with a security guard.

Gabby pointed at us and yelled.

“We’re going to be the owners of this property! Hurry up and throw these two beggars out!

“If they hurt my baby, none of you will be able to bear the consequences!”

Mary was even more agitated after she heard that.

“It’s an illegitimate child! I don’t agree to this! Abort it immediately!”

Gabby’s face darkened. Under everyone’s curious gazes, she became extremely furious. She lifted her foot and forcefully kicked Mary with her high heels.

“Old witch, how dare you insult me! Do you have a death wish? Get her out of here immediately, otherwise I’m getting my husband to fire all of you!”

I repeated John’s cruel words to him. The arrogance on his face disappeared. It was replaced with a look of grief and resignation. I did not let it stop me. I insisted that he could either agree to a divorce or head over to the police station. John gave in because of his mother’s life. When he walked out of the building, Gabby showed up at the entrance with her family. They grabbed John by the collar and forced him to pay for her pregnancy. John kept arguing and said that Gabby had consented to the affair, so he would not make any payment. The only choice they had was letting Gabby marry him. However, Gabby no longer wanted him after knowing that he had lost his fortune. In the end, the messy incident ended with a fight when John accused Gabby of being a prostitute. I did not want to watch any of their drama, so I left with my parents after leaving some instructions with my secretary. That night, my secretary updated me. “The manager and security guards are all

John paused. As he sprawled on the floor, he was dumbfounded like a complete idiot. Suddenly, he screamed. “Are you saying that the old lady just now…“Impossible! Why would my mom be here?”I was completely speechless. “I’ve been saying that since the start. You were too stubborn to believe that it’s actually your mother.“You even threatened me with her life!” If he had not allowed Gabby to run wild, Mary would not be injured, and her face would not be covered in blood. He would not have mistaken her for my mother due to the dirt and grime. I had tried my best to remind him. However, he was not willing to listen. He kept claiming that I was lying to him. My parents finally caught on. “What an ungrateful child! I shouldn’t have agreed to your marriage to my daughter.“You don’t deserve to live! How can you be so cruel to scold and hit an old person!“We’ve treated you like our own all these years. I didn’t expect you to be this cruel!” John was dumbfounded

In the past, whenever John used this excuse, I would drop the case. After all, I knew John had a difficult childhood. He was from a poor family. Mary had brought him up all alone. I respected Mary a lot. Whenever we visited her over the holidays, I would always try my best to support her in living a better life. However, ever since my company expanded, I started to focus on my career. I had no choice but to pass the money to John when he visited his mother. Whenever John returned, he would tell me how difficult it was for his mother to live alone in the countryside. However, she did not expect anything from me because she knew that I was busy working and did not want kids. Every time I heard that, I felt sorry for Mary. I also felt that John was having a hard time taking care of his mother alone, and that being with me caused him intense pressure. Hence, when John asked for money to improve Mary’s life, I never said no. For him to gain a respectable standing in th

My parents had brought a group of policemen along and barged in angrily. Ever since I graduated from university, my parents had immediately handed me the company and went travelling around the world. However, that did not mean that they would look the other way when I was in trouble. John’s face became ghastly. “Peter, Janice, what are you doing here? We were just having an argument. “Helen, you’re blowing things out of the water here. We’re just arguing. Why did you ask your parents to come over?”I immediately retreated when he tried to approach me with a hug. “Everyone knows what has happened. Why would I lie to cover for you?”My mother started crying when she saw my flustered state. She hugged me tightly. “Don’t be afraid, Helen, I’m here to protect you.”My father turned around and spoke to the police. “We would like to lodge a police report. Not only did this man cheat on my daughter, but he also abused my daughter and transferred their marital assets withou

After hearing the doctor’s words, everyone who was watching us took John’s side and started to scold me. They were acting righteously, as if they were about to burn me at the stake. Richard paused when he heard the doctor’s words. He stared a little hesitantly at me. “Helen, if you have proof that what you’re saying is true, I can help you.”I silently looked at my phone, which had been smashed into pieces. John asked the security guards to take Mary out. I wanted to stop him, but he stared viciously at me. “Helen, I’m the only one who can get your mother some help. Are you sure you want to go against me?”I stared at Mary, who was unconscious, and relented. I only glared dangerously at John. “If you dare to pull anything, you’ll regret this.” John laughed maliciously. “How dare you threaten me?“You should remain calm and think of your mother.“If something happens to her, you’ll be the one who regrets it.”I could not even say a word. After a long stretch o

  • The Price of Lies   Chapter 3

Just as John finished speaking, the security guards rushed forward and tried to stop us. Gabby even started recording us on her phone. “Everyone, look! These two shameless lunatics are trying to ruin our New Year.“She even pretended to be my husband’s wife to scam us! They didn’t expect to bump into me, the actual wife, and their plan has failed! “Please share this video after you watch it so they won’t be able to scam other people!” A few passersby saw what happened. They started pointing fingers at us. Mary had never felt so insulted in her entire life. She crawled over to grab John’s pants. “John, how can you do this?”John and Gabby were frightened. When John saw that it was an unfashionable old lady with her face covered in blood, he just kicked her impatiently. “Who is this old hag? How dare you touch me? I’m going to chop your hand off!” Mary fell to the floor in fright. She suddenly pressed her hand against her chest in pain. I looked at her panting a
