The night wind carried dust and ruin across the valley as Aelin and the others stumbled out from the collapsing sanctum. The roar of falling stone still echoed like thunder in her skull. Her lungs burned, her ribs screamed with every breath, but none of it mattered.

What mattered was the searing, unbearable agony lashing through the bond.

Cassian was alive. She could feel him—alive, but drowning in pain. Every throb was a scream pulled straight into her chest.

She staggered, fell to her knees in the grass. Her hands clawed at her sternum as though she could rip the chain free.

Jayden crouched beside her, bloodied and swaying. “He’s still tethered. That means he’s still breathing.”

Her head whipped toward him, eyes blazing. “He won’t be for long if we don’t get him back.”

Behind them, Seraphine coughed weakly as Ivy propped her against a boulder. Her lips were pale, her magic spent, but her words carried weight. “If Maelor has him, he won’t kill him… not right away. He needs him.”

The glyph’s spiraling light filled the Chamber of Echoes, casting sharp shadows across the rune-carved walls. Aelin’s palms hovered above the crystal, her chest heaving, her eyes burning with both fury and dread. The bond sang inside her like a violin string pulled taut, vibrating with every ounce of Cassian’s pain. But underneath, threaded into that same connection, Maelor’s cold laughter licked at her mind like icy fire.“Cut me free, little wolf. You want to save him? Then do it. Your desperation is the key.”Her knees trembled. Every instinct screamed to push her hands down, to unleash the power glowing beneath her. But Jayden’s warning voice cut through the haze:“Aelin, wait!” His boots echoed as he stumbled toward her, shadows clawing at the edges of the chamber. “If you use the glyph without control, you’ll unravel everything—his bond, your bond, even the one you don’t want to touch.”“That’s the point!” she shouted back, tears streaking her dirt-streaked face. “If I don’t, Ma

The chamber trembled as the figure emerged fully from the fractured circle. It was not the storm of voices and shadows Maelor had once been. This was worse—far worse. The abyss had given him clarity. The formless legion had condensed into something focused, a body shaped to strike. The stag-masked face from Aelin’s visions now bore features of molten silver, a mockery of humanity that gleamed with a terrible beauty. His robes shimmered like liquid night, each fold swallowing light.Every step he took was silence itself. The circle’s runes hissed and bled away beneath his feet.Aelin’s chest burned as if a spear had been driven through her heart. The bond with Cassian thrashed violently, tugged toward the creature as though it recognized him as part of its own creation. She clutched at the pain, but her knees buckled.Cassian caught her before she fell. His arms shook from the strain, his golden aura flickering like a dying lantern. “He’s tethered to us. That’s why he has form. He’s us

The circle was screaming. Not with sound, but with the wrench of power tearing through the sanctum. Aelin felt as though every thread in her body was being pulled taut and set alight. Her fire flared against her will, spilling into the runes. Cassian’s golden aura bled through the cracks of his skin, his jaw clenched so hard that blood dripped down his lip.Their bond pulsed between them, a golden-threaded flame woven deep into her chest. And now Maelor’s voice—no, the legion’s—wrapped around it, tightening like a strangler’s grip.“Your love is not strength. It is a leash. A gift freely bound, and gifts can be stolen.”Aelin staggered, her knees buckling, the sword slipping from her grasp. She caught herself on the circle’s edge, fire sparking in protest. No. No, he cannot take this.Cassian stumbled toward her, even as his aura flickered. He seized her wrist, grounding her. “Stay with me, Aelin. Whatever it takes—don’t let go.”The circle flared, runes trembling like glass about to

The circle cracked.Ivy’s runes flared once more, then guttered as shadows poured into the sanctum like a black tide. Aelin could hardly breathe; the air turned to ash and despair. Her sword trembled, its fire dimming under the weight of so many voices whispering all at once.Cassian snarled, standing over her, golden aura blazing despite his bleeding side. “Hold the line! Don’t let them break the circle!”Seraphine was already wading through the tide of shadows, her fire burning with reckless abandon. Every lash of her hand sent whips of white-hot flame across the chamber, incinerating tendrils, but each she destroyed was replaced by two more.Jayden’s laugh was bitter as he forced his shadows against the tide. “This is madness. They’re endless. ENDLESS.”Maelor’s many voices filled the chamber, triumphant and resonant: “Do you see now, mortals? I am not a single chain, not a single beast. I am hungry, given form. I am legion. You cannot seal what was never whole.”Ivy collapsed to

The light split the sanctum like a sunburst, burning so bright that Aelin thought her eyes would sear from their sockets. The force of it flung her and Cassian against the broken wall. Stone cracked under her shoulder as she gasped for breath, shielding him instinctively with her body. The god’s form—once monstrous but contained—crumbled apart piece by piece. The claw shattered into dust, the stag-skull mask cracked in two, the gilded robe dissolved like ash in fire. From within that dissolving shell came something far older.A sound emerged first. A howl, yet not of any wolf or beast she had ever known. It was the wail of creation itself, sharp enough to slice through marrow. The Veil trembled, reality bending in jagged ripples. Then came the shadow. It poured forth like smoke given flesh, taller than the walls, broader than the chamber, its limbs stretching too far, bending at impossible angles. Eyes—if they could be called that—ignited one by one across its surface, dozens, then hu
