LOGIN'Remember this, Ariana Ophelia. The only way home is through her. The woman who’s behaving as you are.'
Those words, like a banshee’s scream, echoed continuously in Ariana’s head as the guards took her out of the palace. They unsettled her as the seconds ticked by.
Two guards were on either side of her as they trekked to the Captain’s house while the man himself rode on a horse.
Ariana's eyes fixed on Kaleb’s head, glaring intensely. Couldn’t he have had a carriage to take her to their destination? Why does he have to make her walk?
To a typical servant, the journey to the mid-level class area might seem like a simple stroll. However, for Ariana, who had only ever walked in the imperial garden, it felt like a brutal ordeal.
Ariana was on the verge of fainting when they arrived at a plain, brown, one-storey building. This was the Captain’s home. Her legs shook. Her feet ached because the rough wooden shoes she wore made walking painful.
Kaleb swung down, just as the gates of the house opened and a young man with freckles rushed out.
“Welcome back, Captain,” he smiled, taking the rope of the horse from him.
Kaleb gave him a fond smile, then it disappeared as he turned to her. “Come.”
Ariana received a nudge that pushed her forward. She squelched the urge to snarl at the guard who did it as she followed inside.
She was taken upstairs. The chamber that they assigned her made her lip curl in disdain.
It might be tidy, but it’s frustratingly bare. There’s a small bed with a chamber pot underneath, a narrow table with a washbasin and pitcher, and a stool. A lone window was her only link to the outside. Its crisscrossed bars cast strange patterns on the floor from the pale sunlight.
Ariana stepped in and quickly sat on the bed, although she tried to maintain her dignity as she did so. The Captain was studying her with his piercing bluish-green eyes.
“So now what?”
“Keep you safe. Continue investigating you until the seal appears.”
“So my life really is in danger now,” Ariana murmured, wrapping her arms around herself. “And it’s over something I didn’t do.” How ironic.
“And you better pray it remains as you keep saying. If not….”
She glared. “How many times do I have to repeat myself? I have nothing to do with the stolen seal.”
“Guilty until proven otherwise. Now about the one who tried to kill you, do you have any idea who might have anything against you?”
If it were her previous life, she’d say plenty. “No.”
“Nobody ever threatened or attempted to hurt you?”
Ariana mentally scoffed. Not if they and their unborn generation want to die. “No, no one.”
Kaleb gave a noncommittal hum. Then he whirled around to leave. She was up in a flash, nearly falling on her face.
“Wait, don’t tell me you’re just going to leave me here like that? I mean, what if the… one that wants to kill me comes back? What if I was sleeping and it materialised out of nowhere—“
“Then you better scream loud enough for me to hear or you’re dead," Kaleb flippantly answered.
Ariana paled. Tears were already clouding her eyes when she realised he was… smiling.
This bastard!
“Relax,” his brief humour disappeared. “My quarters are right next to yours. If anyone tries to hurt you, I’d know.”
What you couldn’t have said that before, Ariana moodily thought.
“Get some rest. I’ll have someone bring you something to eat.” He stepped out. Just as the heavy door shut, she heard him address someone outside. “Thoroughly inspect every tray of food brought near this chamber. No one enters without my express permission. Nothing must happen to her.”
“Yes, Captain.”
The lock slipped into place, leaving Ariana in a choking silence.
She slowly lay on the bed, pulling her knees to her chest. The old woman’s voice resounded again.
But how can she get that done when the Princess won’t even allow her close to her? Just why does the old hag have to give her such an impossible task to do?
What did she even do that’s so horrible to her to even deserve this?
The memory of the way she’d ruthlessly treated the people of Greenridge assaulted her.
“Where are my taxes?"
“I’m sorry for the delay, but—"
“I want to know where they are, not to hear your excuses."
“We couldn’t deliver due to last year's harvest failure and severe drought—"
“Not my concern. As the village head, couldn’t you find a solution?"
Ariana turned to her guards. “Arrest him."
“No!” An old woman stepped forward. “Please, Your Majesty, don’t take my son. He’s all I have. Honestly, we never meant to delay! Bad weather and his father’s death left us helpless; please—"
“My father died too, but I didn’t abandon my duties. If he couldn’t pay, that’s on him for not finding a solution."
“What solution? We’ve sold everything we have! Should we sell our roof or our children?"
“Enough. Those are petty excuses. If you want to blame someone, blame yourselves."
“H-how can you be so heartless? Oh, I wish! I wish you knew what it’s like to have nothing!”
And you wondered what you’ve done; a tiny voice condemned.
B-but that’s not her fault, Ariana thought, trying to convince herself, but her conscience wouldn’t ease up.
It’s not her fault; she kept saying it over and over.
She didn’t know how long time had passed, but she found herself dozing off. Then the sound of the lock on her door slowly began to turn startled her awake.
A guard stood outside.Ariana sat in the tent, on the rough ground, wrists up and tied to a hard pole behind her. Her butt was numb from sitting for what felt like hours. But that worried her less than the thought of the Magus arriving tonight. She pressed her palms together to stop them from trembling. The spell would bring everything into the open. What is she going to do? What if her life as Princess Ariana is revealed? Normally, she’d be ecstatic about that cause everyone will finally see that she’s telling the truth. However, for some inexplicable reason, a cold dread stayed coiled in her stomach. Her heart thudded painfully in her chest, as if her lungs couldn’t draw enough air.The tent flap rustled. A guard muttered something, and Clara slipped inside with a wooden tray holding a bowl of broth."They'd only let me bring this." Her eyes looked red and puffy. "Elena, everyone is saying you were the one who tried to kill the Princess. But I know it's not true, and I told them s
The slap came without warning. Ariana’s head snapped to the side, more in shock than in pain. The Princess stood before her, her eyes cold and threatening. "How did you know there was an assassin and that they were aiming an arrow at me?"Gingerly, Ariana pressed a hand to her cheek, then she turned to face the woman glaring at her. Fury seized her heart.“How dare you lay your hand on me?”The Princess’ brows raised, incredulity mirrored in her face as well as that of the guards behind her. “What did you say?”“I have had it with you and the way you’ve been treating me. I saved you from an arrow, and instead of being grateful, you have the nerve to hit me? So should I have left you to be killed?”“What insolence!” The Princess raised her palm. Ariana flinched, eyes shutting as she braced herself for the hit.“That’s quite enough, Ariana.” King Myde’s voice cut through the tension as he entered the tent, with Kaleb right behind him. Both women whipped at him. But the words were direct
Ariana clutched the wagon’s wood tightly, her face scrunched up like a sour lemon. For a brief moment, she entertained running her mouth. Letting out all the words she had been holding in her chest against him. Worse, the beguiling curl on Kaleb was practically begging her to do precisely that. This demented bastard! He’s probably waiting for me to slip up!Clara was anxious. As she bit her nails, her eyes darted between Ariana and Kaleb.“What? You can’t talk anymore?”Ariana took deep breaths. As calm as possible, she answered through gritted teeth. “No, Captain. It’s all a figment of your imagination. I’m clearly not hiding anything.”"Are you sure?" Kaleb pressed. “Because your face looks like you’re about to do something very difficult.”Would you give it up already?“I already told you,” she growled. “It’s nothing. Nothing is wrong, okay?”Kaleb smirked. "Alright, if you say so," he said, flipping the reins and going back to the front of the march. Bastard.“Is there something
"A hunting trip, My Lord?" "Yes," King Myde answered. "It's almost time for the annual Northern Woods Hunting Trip. I want you to prepare diligently for it. You and your men must be fully prepared to keep all the attending nobles and participants safe." "Pardon my boldness, Sire, but will such action be wise, given the current circumstances?" Kaleb trailed off, tone edged with uncertainty "So, I made sure that the information about the missing seal didn't get to anyone else except those who already knew. The investigation is ongoing, and things must continue as usual so no one suspects that all isn't well." King Myde sighed, looking suddenly aged and weary. "The Council is just waiting to hear it so they can declare me unfit to rule." The last words were so faint that Kaleb nearly thought he'd imagined them. King Myde straightened. "You may go." Kaleb bowed and left. —————— The hunting camp needed forty servants, and the list was in his hands by midday. Kaleb ran his
The next day, Kaleb’s housekeeper woke Ariana before the sun rose. Three guards escorted her to the palace, keeping a close eye on her. It seemed that being a suspect didn’t stop her from doing her old tasks. She was given to Clara. After a breakfast of lukewarm, salty barley porridge and stale rye bread, she quickly taught her the basics at the washbank.Five minutes later, Ariana wanted to cry. Washing was hard. Is this what the servants go through while cleaning her clothes?“Is something wrong, Elena?” Clara asked, hands beating the cloth she was washing against the flat laundry stones."Are you sure this is truly the duty I used to do as Elena?”Clara paused momentarily, confusion flickering in her brown eyes. “Um, yes. Why are you asking that?”“Because this is difficult!” Ariana snarled, dropping the soaked clothes in her hands and standing. “I mean, this is the most degradin
Ariana’s eyes lit up.“Every two weeks, you’d slip out of the palace at night to see someone. However, whenever you came back, you’d always look terrified. Your hands would be shaking so badly that you would sit on your bed counting your fingers for hours. Anytime I asked you who it was, you would go blank and tell me never to ask again.”Outside, Kaleb’s eyes narrowed.“If you knew when I left, why didn’t you follow me, and how come the night guards never caught me?”Clara snorted. “Oh, I did follow you. Countless times. But for some reason, you always disappeared before you reached the courtyard—every single time. I don’t know how you never got caught. I guess you must be highly skilled at evading the night guards.”Ariana’s mind whirred. A mere maid having midnight rendezvous with an unknown person yet no one ever caught her. The woman she had possessed her body
