The heavy door of the throne room opened, and Kaleb marched Ariana inside, holding her firmly by the arm. Her heart raced heavily. The chamber was as she remembered.

Huge stone pillars, velvet draperies, and the raised dais where the ivory throne stood.

Sitting on it was King Myde, her father, alive, with a solemn face, his crown glittering in the light. Beside him stood the woman not her but called Princess Ariana.

It was still weirdly scary seeing someone else wearing her face.

But her father... he’s really alive.

Tears filled her eyes. She wanted to rush over, wrap her arms around him, and cry. She took a step, ready to shout. But before she could speak, the grip on her shoulder tightened painfully.

Kaleb looked at her, and he was downright threatening. "I’d advise you to keep your mouth shut if you know what’s better for you," he whispered harshly. "If you say you’re royal in front of the King, you’ll see that the Princess's punishment is nothing."

Ariana went stiff as she recalled the rather austere punishment she had received.

Dread settled hot and heavy in her stomach.

Kaleb pushed her forward, forcing her to kneel on the cold stone floor before the dais.

King Myde looked at her with a blank expression. Next to him, Princess Ariana shot a glare of irritation at the filthy servant girl.

“So, you are the servant girl who’s in the center of chaos in my palace, even claiming to be my beloved daughter. I don’t know if you’re foolish or just plain suicidal," King Myde said, his deep voice echoing through the tense room.

A wave of shock crashed over Ariana. She realizes with a choking clarity that she’s nothing but a stranger to her father.

Perhaps there’s hope, she thought desperately. Maybe Lucien might remember her.

“The king asked you a question?" Kaleb said, touching her shoulder to nudge her focus.

Head bent, Ariana wiped her tears and looked up, trying to control her emotions. “Your Majesty, I didn’t mean to do that. It—it’s just that I don’t understand what’s happening to me. I woke up days ago, and the only memories I recall are of being Princess Ariana. I swear, My Liege, I have no recollection of being Elena.”

King Myde creased a brow. "You really don’t remember anything of your life as a servant?”

“Yes, sire." Ariana gazed at him, almost pleadingly, as if hoping he’d sense the truth. "I woke up in a body that feels wrong in every way. I—I—do not know... I cannot explain it."

The Princess gave Kaleb a pointed look. “So what do you think? Is she crazy, or is she just playing a game?”

"I can’t say, Your Highness," Kaleb answered, bowing slightly. "I think the cloaked shadow that just attacked her might be tied to the missing seal. It can go through walls, and—”

Princess Ariana scoffed and crossed her arms. "Again with the magic in our palace? Pardon me, Captain, but I don’t believe it.”

“I know what I saw with my own eyes, Your Highness," Kaleb replied firmly. "Why is it that the only suspect in the royal missing seal case, a shadow appeared, trying to strangle her? It’s a bit suspicious, isn’t it?"

King Myde leaned back. "Hm, that’s true. Then what do you propose?"

"Holding her here might not be safe because I won’t be able to watch her properly,” Kaleb stated. "That’s why I’m asking to transfer her to my estate outside the palace walls." I will keep her under heavy guard and figure out her connection to the missing seal."

Princess Ariana stepped forward, upset. "Father, you c—can’t possibly believe this! I mean, she wished death on you and claimed to be me. She should be in a deep cell, not staying in the Captain's house."

"Silence," King Myde said flatly. "I must say, I’m not really comfortable with this, but she’s our only suspect, so she must be kept safe. You have my permission."

"I won’t let you down, sire." Kaleb bowed.

“And keep this conversation between us. No one should know why she’s living with you; do you understand?”

"Yes, Your Majesty."

Then Kaleb pulled Ariana to her feet. She just allowed herself to be dragged toward the door. The look on her face was forlorn.

Just as they reached the entrance, the grand doors opened. A handsome nobleman entered. He wore fine clothes, and his dark hair was neatly styled.

Prince Lucien!

Ariana's heart jumped in her chest. Lucien! He was her childhood friend, her fiancé, and a man who knew her better than anyone.

Hope surged in her. She thought, If anyone can recognize her, it’s him. She nodded and stared at the man coming closer.

Yet as Lucien passed, he didn’t even spare her a glance. It was like her presence didn’t matter in his eyes. Like she was nothing.

"Lucien," she whispered, stretching a shaking hand toward him.

The Prince sidestepped her, pulling his cloak closer to himself so her hand wouldn’t touch him. He gave Kaleb a quick nod and went straight to the king. He gave a respectful bow and received a small but pleased smile from him.

What happened next was like someone had cruelly ripped out her heart.

Princess Ariana, beaming like the sun, rushed and hugged him. Worse, Lucien reciprocated. He placed a kiss on her cheek, then whispered something that made the one wearing her face laugh softly.

It was a loving routine he always shared with Ariana. Now, he was doing it with another woman!

Ariana quietly sobbed as Kaleb brought her out of the throne room. The Captain merely glanced at the tears running down but said nothing.

As the cold wind in the courtyard hit her face, something deep within her shifted. The stubborn spark of hope she'd been nursing died out.

Nobody is truly coming to help her.

Her life as Princess Ariana Ophelia truly was over.

What is she going to do now?

A guard stood outside.Ariana sat in the tent, on the rough ground, wrists up and tied to a hard pole behind her. Her butt was numb from sitting for what felt like hours. But that worried her less than the thought of the Magus arriving tonight. She pressed her palms together to stop them from trembling. The spell would bring everything into the open. What is she going to do? What if her life as Princess Ariana is revealed? Normally, she’d be ecstatic about that cause everyone will finally see that she’s telling the truth. However, for some inexplicable reason, a cold dread stayed coiled in her stomach. Her heart thudded painfully in her chest, as if her lungs couldn’t draw enough air.The tent flap rustled. A guard muttered something, and Clara slipped inside with a wooden tray holding a bowl of broth."They'd only let me bring this." Her eyes looked red and puffy. "Elena, everyone is saying you were the one who tried to kill the Princess. But I know it's not true, and I told them s

The slap came without warning. Ariana’s head snapped to the side, more in shock than in pain. The Princess stood before her, her eyes cold and threatening. "How did you know there was an assassin and that they were aiming an arrow at me?"Gingerly, Ariana pressed a hand to her cheek, then she turned to face the woman glaring at her. Fury seized her heart.“How dare you lay your hand on me?”The Princess’ brows raised, incredulity mirrored in her face as well as that of the guards behind her. “What did you say?”“I have had it with you and the way you’ve been treating me. I saved you from an arrow, and instead of being grateful, you have the nerve to hit me? So should I have left you to be killed?”“What insolence!” The Princess raised her palm. Ariana flinched, eyes shutting as she braced herself for the hit.“That’s quite enough, Ariana.” King Myde’s voice cut through the tension as he entered the tent, with Kaleb right behind him. Both women whipped at him. But the words were direct

Ariana clutched the wagon’s wood tightly, her face scrunched up like a sour lemon. For a brief moment, she entertained running her mouth. Letting out all the words she had been holding in her chest against him. Worse, the beguiling curl on Kaleb was practically begging her to do precisely that. This demented bastard! He’s probably waiting for me to slip up!Clara was anxious. As she bit her nails, her eyes darted between Ariana and Kaleb.“What? You can’t talk anymore?”Ariana took deep breaths. As calm as possible, she answered through gritted teeth. “No, Captain. It’s all a figment of your imagination. I’m clearly not hiding anything.”"Are you sure?" Kaleb pressed. “Because your face looks like you’re about to do something very difficult.”Would you give it up already?“I already told you,” she growled. “It’s nothing. Nothing is wrong, okay?”Kaleb smirked. "Alright, if you say so," he said, flipping the reins and going back to the front of the march. Bastard.“Is there something

  • The Princess’s Pride   Journey To The Northern Woods

"A hunting trip, My Lord?" "Yes," King Myde answered. "It's almost time for the annual Northern Woods Hunting Trip. I want you to prepare diligently for it. You and your men must be fully prepared to keep all the attending nobles and participants safe." "Pardon my boldness, Sire, but will such action be wise, given the current circumstances?" Kaleb trailed off, tone edged with uncertainty "So, I made sure that the information about the missing seal didn't get to anyone else except those who already knew. The investigation is ongoing, and things must continue as usual so no one suspects that all isn't well." King Myde sighed, looking suddenly aged and weary. "The Council is just waiting to hear it so they can declare me unfit to rule." The last words were so faint that Kaleb nearly thought he'd imagined them. King Myde straightened. "You may go." Kaleb bowed and left. —————— The hunting camp needed forty servants, and the list was in his hands by midday. Kaleb ran his

The next day, Kaleb’s housekeeper woke Ariana before the sun rose. Three guards escorted her to the palace, keeping a close eye on her. It seemed that being a suspect didn’t stop her from doing her old tasks. She was given to Clara. After a breakfast of lukewarm, salty barley porridge and stale rye bread, she quickly taught her the basics at the washbank.Five minutes later, Ariana wanted to cry. Washing was hard. Is this what the servants go through while cleaning her clothes?“Is something wrong, Elena?” Clara asked, hands beating the cloth she was washing against the flat laundry stones."Are you sure this is truly the duty I used to do as Elena?”Clara paused momentarily, confusion flickering in her brown eyes. “Um, yes. Why are you asking that?”“Because this is difficult!” Ariana snarled, dropping the soaked clothes in her hands and standing. “I mean, this is the most degradin

  • The Princess’s Pride   A Whole Lot Of Trouble

Ariana’s eyes lit up.“Every two weeks, you’d slip out of the palace at night to see someone. However, whenever you came back, you’d always look terrified. Your hands would be shaking so badly that you would sit on your bed counting your fingers for hours. Anytime I asked you who it was, you would go blank and tell me never to ask again.”Outside, Kaleb’s eyes narrowed.“If you knew when I left, why didn’t you follow me, and how come the night guards never caught me?”Clara snorted. “Oh, I did follow you. Countless times. But for some reason, you always disappeared before you reached the courtyard—every single time. I don’t know how you never got caught. I guess you must be highly skilled at evading the night guards.”Ariana’s mind whirred. A mere maid having midnight rendezvous with an unknown person yet no one ever caught her. The woman she had possessed her body
