LESSIE

I had learned my lesson the hard way.

I wasn’t about to go barreling through the crowded streets of San Antonio again—not after that miserable incident at the carriage dealer’s shop.

For now, I’d stick to the quieter stretches of road beyond the city limits.

So I gripped the wheel of the Duryea with careful hands and steered us steadily along the open lanes, leaving behind the last neat houses and tidy fences of town.

Within an hour, the countryside had swallowed us whole. Heat pressed down like a hammer on the back of my neck.

The sun glared with merciless brilliance, baking the earth until it seemed to shimmer.

“The train was cooler,” Ethan murmured beside me.

I bit back the sharp retort that nearly leapt to my lips. Of course the train had been cooler—everyone knew that.

But I would not let him see my discomfort. Instead, I shifted in the seat, wincing at how every rut and pothole jolted through my back, rattled my teeth, and left my backside aching.

  • The Professor, My Mate   Chapter 34

PROFESSOR DANTE At first, I thought my mind was playing tricks on me.I blinked once. Twice. My heart thudded like a hammer inside my chest as I stared down the dimly lit hallway. For a split second, I’d seen her sitting right there on my living room couch, her silhouette outlined in the faint glow from the fireplace that had died hours ago. Pale skin. Long, dark hair cascading over her shoulders. That same cold smirk that used to curdle my blood.Celeste.I blinked again, shaking my head violently. “No,” I muttered under my breath. “You’re dead.”But when I looked again, she was gone. I rubbed my eyes several times, convinced it was exhaustion, maybe the stress twisting my senses into illusions. But deep down, beneath the logic and reason, my wolf stirred uneasily.I’d seen her. I knew it.I took slow, careful steps toward the living room, my muscles coiled tight. Every creak of the floorboard sounded louder than normal. The fire was out completely now, leaving only shadows danci

LESSIE My legs were on fire. Every step felt like knives cutting into the soles of my feet, and still that stranger kept walking as though the earth itself was carrying him forward. His hood was pulled low, shadowing most of his face, but I didn’t need to see his expression to know he was utterly indifferent to my pain.“Wait, please…” My voice cracked as I stumbled, my knees threatening to buckle. “When are we going to rest? I can’t keep doing this. We've been walking for hours and still no sign of a building. I'm tired, I just can’t.”For the first time since we’d started following him, the stranger stopped. Slowly, deliberately, he turned his head over his shoulder. His eyes caught the faint light seeping through the dense trees, and for a second, I swore they gleamed like a predator’s. He looked at me, at my shaking frame, at the sweat clinging to my skin and then without a single word, he turned back and kept walking. That was it. Not even a grunt. Just silence.Beside me,

LESSIE The anger woven through his tone made me glance sharply at him. “Of course not! I gave you my word, didn’t I?” I pasted on my brightest smile, though it felt brittle.“Don’t look so damn pleased about it,” he muttered. My chest rose sharply. How was I supposed to go anywhere with this man? Still, I had never been a liar. I always kept my promises. Straightening, I looped my arm through Ethan’s and said firmly, “Let’s go.”“Lessie?” he whispered nervously.“It’s all right,” I assured him. At least, I tried to sound convincing.“Damn it, just get in the car!” he barked from behind us.Ethan obeyed instantly, practically leaping into his seat. I froze, indignation surging through me. “Your manners,” I snapped, “are utterly disgraceful!”“Lessie!” Ethan gasped .“Really?” His reply was maddeningly calm, and then shockingly, his hand closed over my shoulder, halting me. I stiffened at the audacity.“My manners may be rough,” he said, his voice cutting low, “but so’s your attitude

LESSIE He didn’t stop. He didn’t even slow down. He just kept walking away as if I hadn’t spoken, as if my voice were nothing but dust carried off on the hot desert wind. For a moment, I was too stunned to react. Nobody had ever ignored me before—not once in my entire life. But this one? He walked on, his long strides chewing the ground, his saddle hitched on his shoulder, his back radiating defiance. My amazement hardened into determination. Lifting the hem of my skirts, I stumbled after him, breath catching in the dry air. “Wait! sir!”That got him. He stopped abruptly, then turned, planting one hip out in an arrogant tilt, his saddle balanced against it. His expression was unreadable, but the stance itself radiated challenge. He simply stood there, waiting.I paused several paces away, suddenly wary. There was no expression on his face at all—like stone carved against the horizon. That unshakable, cocky way his hip jutted out made him seem even more unapproachable. Frowning,
