SKYLAR

I wake up feeling like complete poop.

And that wretched feeling isn't even entirely due to the fact that I had to go to sleep without a shower–though my skin feels like it’s crawling with industrial-grade grime. No, the real source of my misery is the icy, impenetrable brick wall Trey threw up between us last night. Or this morning. Whatever. You get the point.

Has he ever shut me down on that level before?

Nope. Not that I can recall.

Even back on Sunday when I demanded to know why he’d

  • The QB’s Nerdy Addiction    160: Juicy Little Change

I don't know what I expected when Ryder called out the contending couples and the stadium spotlights swung toward the dark mouth of the tunnel. Okay, who am I kidding? I most definitely did know what I expected. I expected four people to come strutting out onto that field: Shawn and Cherry... and Trey and Natalia. But that isn't what happens at all. Instead, only two people sprint out onto the illuminated turf with their hands raised high toward the night sky. Shawn and Cherry. They look flawlessly coordinated in matching pink-and-gold athletic attire emblazoned with the Apex logo. Shawn is wearing a tailored compression top and joggers that hug his frame, while Cherry is rocking a skimpy two-piece cheerleader set–if you can even call it a set, considering the metallic bottoms give off serious panty vibes. Even Ryder looks caught off guard by the solo entrance. "Well... I guess we’re introducing them one couple at a time! Why didn't anyone tell me about the script change? Anyway

Come to think of it, this clinic room is absurdly fancy. No real surprise there, considering VSU is practically a luxury resort disguised as an institution of higher education. Right now, however, I couldn't care less about the room's interior design. My eyes are entirely glued to the screen. Jade taps away at the remote, trying to mirror the campus sports broadcast onto the screen. After what feels like an eternity of loading screens and buffering circles, she triumphantly announces, "And... finished!" She backs away from the console and walks over to the bed, carefully settling down on the edge of the mattress beside my legs. I don't even acknowledge her. All my focus hooks onto the live broadcast. The stadium on the screen is practically bathed in tension. The camera pans across the turf, zooming in on the opposing team–dressed head-to-toe in green and white–facing off against our VSU Tigers in their dark blue and white uniforms. The atmosphere on the field is so thick you co

  • The QB’s Nerdy Addiction    158: Yes, Your Royal Caveman

Out of the two options Jade had graciously laid out on the table, it wasn't exactly a difficult puzzle to decide which one I wanted. At the speed I blurted out, "Number two! Let's go with option two!", even I was slightly startled by my own aggressive eagerness. Jade, however, just threw her head back and laughed, looking as though she had totally anticipated my choice all along. She agreed immediately, though she promised to still fill me in later on everything that had happened while I was unconscious. Then she ran off to fetch the doctor. Moments later, she reappeared with a medical professional whose name sounded something like Cassandra or Samantha–honestly, my fried, concussed brain was in no condition to store registry data. My mind wasn't in that white room at all. My mind was entirely at the VSU stadium, picturing Trey and wondering how on earth he was expected to navigate the first official Apex challenge completely solo. Without me. Wait. Didn't I literally just call

What is that thing that’s currently crushing my chest? Guilt. So much of it. I can't control the burning sting in my eyes as the memories of those final moments under the storm wash over me. When I passed out after that second bone-shattering blow... I didn't fight it. I actually embraced the dark. I wanted to die. I lied to myself, thinking I was ridding the world of a useless failure, when the honest-to-God truth was that I just wanted to escape the suffocating weight of my miserable life–completely abandoning Aunt Danny and Mom in the process. How flipping selfish of me. I’m fully, painfully aware of what a coward I was being. If I hadn't miraculously regained consciousness, heard Justin yell Trey's name through the storm, and realized in that split second how selfish I was for wanting death, I never would have summoned the strength to call out for Trey. And if I hadn't called out to him... Gosh, I can’t even bring myself to think about it. The bitter taste of self-hatred

It takes Jade a solid three seconds to reboot. When she finally blinks, her eyes are blazing with so much fury that it sends chill dancing down my spine. "Did you... did you just say you got attacked by a guy in a ghost-face mask?" "Yup." I swallow hard. "And don't forget the baseball bat part. That detail was really the cherry on top of my evening." She looks like she's about ready to commit premeditated murder. "Why?! Why the fuck would someone do something like that?! Who on earth would do that to you?!" Next thing I know, she’s pacing an uncoordinated half-circle beside the mattress, running her fingers aggressively through her purple hair. "Hell, this is the first time I'm hearing of anything like this happening at VSU! I've definitely never heard of masked maniacs ambushing students on campus before! That's fucking insane!" "Tell me about it. And no surprise here–I'm the absolute first person to experience it. I've pretty much established at this point that the universe genui

  • The QB’s Nerdy Addiction    155: Definitely Not Stupid

SKYLAR I can hear voices humming just above my head. Unlike last time, there are no aggressive face-slaps, and I can't quite make out the exact tone or words being spoken. But one thing is clear: I’m definitely not in that comfortable position. Though, the bed itself isn't so bad. Soft mattress, crisp sheets, and the faint, sterile smell of antiseptic hanging in the air. The campus clinic bed. How do I know I'm at the campus clinic? Because the fractured, horrifying pieces of my memory manage to piece themselves back together through the haze. Somehow–just somehow–after that masked dirtbag struck me a second time in the ribs and I blacked out from the diabolical agony, I had drifted back to consciousness. I remember the motor-mouthed voice of Justin talking a mile a minute about something that my fried brain couldn't process. What I do remember with crystal clarity, however, is Justin saying Trey's last name right in the middle of whatever he was blabbing. And sure enough, when
