Wedding In Red

One Month Later. Lane Garden. 5 PM.

No hotel ballroom. No glass tower. No Knight mansion.

My wedding was in the Lane garden where Grandpa taught me to sew.

The decoration was not flowers. It was Grandpa's old Singer sewing machines — 10 of them, all cleaned, with red thread spooling to make a curtain. In the middle, the first one — the one that hid the $50M diamond.

The dress was not white.

It was red. Bright Chinese red qipao, modern cut, embroidered with tiny stars that glowed. On the chest, the Starlight Diamond, cut smaller now into two — one star for my ring, one star for the dress centerpiece. Mom's idea. "Starlight should be shared, not locked."

Mom was walking.

After one month of treatment, no more poison, she could walk with a cane. She wore the pink lipstick again, and Grandpa's old jade bracelet.

She held my arm.

"Sophia, are you nervous?" she whispered as drums started.

"No, Mom. Last time I was nervous. This time I am ready."

Because this time, I knew who was waiting at the end of the red carpet.

Alexander was not in a black suit. He wore a black Chinese tang suit with red star embroidery to match me. No tie. Hair not perfect. He was nervous — the billionaire who never got nervous was fidgeting with his ring box.

Grandmother Knight was in the front row, with Grandpa's photo framed next to her. She brought it herself. "Your grandpa should see this. He kept Starlight alive."

Board members, Vogue, Mrs. Chen, even the two female police officers who arrested Lisa — all here.

And two people in the back, not invited but came.

Ethan Miller and Chloe.

Ethan looked thin, tired. After his family's $20M investment in Lane failed when Father was removed, Miller Group stock fell. He lost his CEO position last week. He came to see what he lost.

Chloe wore black, no makeup, no I*******m. Her account was banned after the theft report.

My mother squeezed my hand tighter when she saw them.

"Don't look at them. Look at your husband."

We walked. Each step on red thread path.

When we reached Alexander, Mom did what she promised — she officially gave me away.

"Alexander Knight," Mom said loudly, so all garden could hear, "my daughter was poisoned, betrayed, sold, and she still learned to draw light. If you ever make her cry again, I don't care if you are a Knight. I will cut your suit with my sewing machine."

Everyone laughed. Alexander nodded seriously.

"I promise, Mrs. Lane. No more tears. Only midnight milk."

Mom put my hand in his. Her hand was warm.

The priest was not a priest. It was Dr. Patel, who saved Mom. We asked him.

"Do you, Alexander Knight, take Sophia Lane..."

"I do. I did a year ago for contract. I do now for life."

"Do you, Sophia Lane, take Alexander Knight..."

"I do. I did for $1B. I do now for free. Actually he still owes me $1B but I will let it go if he does dishes."

Garden laughed again. Alexander laughed and whispered, "I will do dishes for life."

Rings exchanged. Starlight rings glowed.

"Now you may kiss..."

He didn't wait for the sentence to finish.

He kissed me — in red, in garden, in front of sewing machines, in front of Grandpa's photo.

This kiss was not like rooftop shy kiss. This was wedding kiss. Deep, sure, mine.

Everyone cheered.

Then I did one last thing.

I walked to the back, to Ethan and Chloe, with Alexander's hand still in mine.

Ethan looked up, eyes red. "Sophia... I..."

"Ethan," I said calmly, not angry anymore. Because revenge is not shouting. Revenge is being happy when they are not.

"In my last life, you made me wait for you for 10 years and then you let me die in a fire you helped start. I checked. You gave Lisa the lighter fluid."

Ethan turned white. "What... how did you..."

"Alexander's men found your payment receipt to Lisa, $50,000, three days before fire. Police have it. They will call you next week."

Chloe grabbed his arm. "What fire? What are you talking about?"

I looked at her. "Sister, you wanted my designs. Now you have no I*******m, no Lane shares, no mother. How does it feel to steal and still have nothing?"

Chloe cried. "I'm sorry! I was jealous! Dad said you were always favorite!"

"Sorry is too late for last life. But this life, you can start over. Not as a Lane. As yourself. Go find a job not with my name."

I turned back to the stage where Mom was sitting, tired but smiling, holding Grandpa's photo.

Alexander whispered, "CEO Lane, you are scary when you are nice."

"I learned from you, Mr. Knight."

We walked back to Mom. Grandmother Knight stood up with difficulty and put her pearl necklace on me — Knight family heirloom for real wife, not contract wife.

"Welcome to Knight family properly this time, Sophia Knight."

My mother put her jade bracelet on my other hand.

"And still Lane family always, Sophia Lane-Knight."

I had two family names, two rings, two grandmothers, one diamond that became two, and one husband who finally learned to not just stand behind me, but walk beside me.

The sun set over Lane garden, turning all red thread to gold.

That night, no contract on the bedside table.

Only a new paper, written by Alexander in bad handwriting:

> New Contract — Lifetime

> Clause 1: Midnight milk whenever Mrs. Knight wants.

> Clause 2: Kiss without approval.

> Clause 3: Stand behind, beside, and in front when needed.

> Clause 4: No end date.

> Signed: Alexander Knight (husband, not contractor)

I signed below: Sophia Lane-Knight (CEO, wife, not ex-wife)

And I added Clause 5: Do dishes.

He laughed and did dishes.

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    Stella Stars School

Stella was 5 years and 3 months old when she started real school. Not Lane-Knight Academy — real school, with uniforms that were not Starlight, with teachers who did not know she was Chief Star Officer. We bought her a backpack that was bigger than her. She insisted on packing it herself: one sewing kit, one star sticker sheet, one business card that said STELLA KNIGHT — CHIEF STAR OFFICER, and one photo of Baby Jian in his drawer-crib."For when I miss him," she said seriously.Hope, 4, did not start school yet. She stayed at the Academy with Chloe and Mom, drawing stars. But she cried when Stella left."Who will stamp APPROVED now?" Hope asked, holding Stella's hand at the gate."I will stamp from school. I will come back at 3 PM and stamp," Stella promised, like a CEO promising a client.Alexander drove her. He wanted to walk her in, but Stella said, "Daddy, CEOs walk themselves in."So he parked outside, in grey sweater — because Stella demanded grey sweater for first day — and wa

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    The $200M Order

Three days after Baby Jian was born in sewing room, I got an email that made me forget I was supposed to be on bed rest.Subject: *Dior — $200M Collaboration — URGENT — Reply in 24 hours*From: Paris. Dior CEO. Not assistant. CEO himself. He wrote:> Sophia,> We saw Stella's fall video, Chloe's redemption arc, and Baby Jian's birth in sewing room. Our team loves your story. We want Starlight to co-design Dior x Starlight — 100 looks, real tailors, not factories. $200M order. Must start tomorrow. Can you do it with newborn?> — Bernard$200M. Same number as my whole company worth. Double my company in one order. And I had a 3-day-old baby in a fabric drawer, swollen feet, no sleep, and a 5-year-old CEO daughter who fired suppliers.I called Alexander. He was doing dishes with baby Jian in sling, as usual."Mr. Knight, Dior wants $200M. Tomorrow."He dropped plate. Plate broke. Second plate broke this week because of my news. First was $1B deal hung up, now plate."Tomorrow? With Jian

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    Baby Jian-Born In Sewing

I thought Stella was a tyrant at 6 months old. At 5 years old, she was a CEO tyrant. And I was 8 months pregnant with a boy who kicked like he wanted to sew his way out of my belly. It was Monday, 2 PM, Lane-Knight Academy, third floor sewing room. I was supposed to be on bed rest. Doctor said bed rest because my feet were swollen like bread. Alexander said bed rest because he read on Google that 8-month pregnant CEOs should not sit at sewing machines for 8 hours. Mom said bed rest because she said Lane women always have fast birth and I should stay near sewing machines, not office. But I had a $200M company. $200M does not do bed rest. So I was in sewing room, sitting on floor, surrounded by fabric rolls, trying to fix the gold star patch Stella sewed on Alexander's butt-tux. The tux that ripped when he fell on runway 5 years ago. He still wears it every year for vow renewal. He says it's couture now. I say it's excuse to not buy new tux.Stella and Hope were with me. Stella, 5 years

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    The Second Vow Renewal

Five years later.Lane Garden was different now.No longer just garden. Now it was Lane-Knight Academy — first floor is free fashion school for girls who can't afford design school, second floor is Stella and Hope's playroom, third floor is still sewing machines that go click-clack day and night. The garden still had red thread curtain, but now faded to pink by sun. We never replaced it. Because some things should fade and still stay.Today was not a fashion show. Today was vow renewal. Second vow renewal — we did one every year as promised in Clause 4.1, but this year was special. Fifth year. And second baby.I was 33 years old. CEO Lane-Knight, $200M brand now, 120 employees, TIME cover twice. But today, I was just Sophia, 7 months pregnant again, in same red qipao from first wedding, but let out 3 inches at belly. Stella herself sewed the extra fabric — crooked stitch, but I wore it proudly.Stella was 5 years old now, not baby tyrant anymore, but mini-CEO tyrant. She had her own t

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    Chloe Returns-Not As Enemy

One week after Stella's viral fall, I was in sewing room at 7 AM, alone, trying to fix Alexander's tux that ripped when he fell. The rip was small but it was right on butt — poetic.Door knocked. Not Maya's knock. Maya knocks like CEO — three fast. This knock was slow, scared."Come in."Door opened and Chloe stood there. She looked different. No Instagram makeup. Hair in ponytail, no extensions. She wore a plain white T-shirt, jeans that were not designer, and old sneakers. She held a small bag and a paper. And her belly. Her belly was big. 6 months pregnant, maybe 7.For a second, I thought I was seeing things. Last time I saw Chloe was at the copycat show, crying, wearing fake velvet."Can... can I come in?" she said, voice hoarse.I didn't say yes. I didn't say no. I just looked at her belly."How many months?" I asked."Seven," she whispered, hand automatically going to belly. "Seven months.""Whose?""Ethan's."The sewing room went silent. Only the clock ticking.Ethan. Of cours

  • The Queen Stands Uncoquered    Stella's First Fashion Show

Stella was 6 months old and already a tyrant. She had three nannies quit in one month because she only wanted to be held by two people: me, and Alexander — but only when Alexander was wearing his soft grey sweater, not his suit. If he wore suit, she screamed like we were torturing her."She has taste," Alexander said proudly, throwing his $5,000 Tom Ford jacket on the floor and putting on the $40 grey sweater from Uniqlo that Stella liked. "She knows quality.""She knows you look less scary without suit," I said, trying to work on Spring collection while Stella tried to eat my charcoal pencil.Mom said, "Sophia, you need to take Stella out. She stays in office too much. She needs to see other babies."So I had an idea. A terrible, brilliant, GoodNovel-reader-will-love-it idea.Starlight Baby First Fashion Show. Not for adults. For babies. 20 babies from our staff, all wearing mini Starlight outfits sewn by me at 2 AM while breastfeeding. And the finale would be Stella — 6 months, 18 p
