Chapter 2

Penulis: Little Dumpling
My fingertips had just brushed the edge of the warding charm when the door to my room suddenly swung open.

"Ella, what are you doing?" Lilith leaned against the doorframe, tilting her head with a smile on her lips, though her eyes were icy cold.

My heart skipped a beat, but I kept my expression neutral. "Just clearing out some old things."

She strolled in slowly, her gaze wandering over my face. "Ella, I heard you've been able to smell ghosts and supernatural beings since you were little. Is that true?"

I clutched the charm in my palm and jumped down from the chair, brushing the dust off my hands to hide my nerves. "How could I possibly have that kind of ability? They're just joking about it. By the way, why aren't you downstairs with Mom and Dad?"

Lilith suddenly stepped closer, and that stench of decay washed over me as she asked, "Then, Ella, why do you seem… so afraid of me?"

I forced back my disgust and stepped away. "Why would I be?"

"Well, then why do you keep avoiding me?" she asked, her eyes instantly welling up with tears. "Do you look down on me because I grew up in an orphanage?"

Here we go again. Alarm bells went off in my head right away. In my past life, every time she played the victim, I would end up in serious trouble.

"You're overthinking it," I said, carefully circling around her to grab my suitcase.

But she suddenly seized my wrist. Her hand was ice cold, unlike a living person's, and it felt like there was something writhing beneath her skin.

I yanked my hand free reflexively. "Let go of me!"

"Ah!" Lilith let out a shriek and fell backward, the back of her head hitting the wardrobe with a thud. But before anyone could see it, she flashed me a triumphant grin.

The next very second, the door burst open. "Lily!"

Tristan rushed in, and when he saw Lilith on the floor, his face turned ashen. "Elara! What did you do?"

He shoved me aside and gathered Lilith into his arms. The others hurried in at the commotion, and their expressions darkened at the sight.

Lilith leaned weakly against Tristan's chest as tears streamed down her face. "Tris, this isn't Ella's fault... I just lost my balance."

My mother rushed over to embrace her. "Lily, don't be scared. Mommy's here."

My father glared at me furiously. "I am very disappointed in you, Elara Ashbourne!"

I looked around the room at all these people, and the corners of my mouth curled into a mocking smile. More than a decade of family affection had turned out to be nothing but an illusion. I was probably the only fool who had taken it seriously.

Not wanting to waste my breath, I grabbed my suitcase and headed for the door.

"Stop right there!" Tristan barked. "Apologize to Lily!"

I turned back to look at the childhood friend I had grown up with. All I saw in his eyes now was unfamiliar contempt.

"Apologize?" I scoffed. "What for?"

Then, a loud crack was heard as my father stormed over and delivered a hard slap across my face. The force of it was so strong that blood immediately seeped from the corner of my lips. "What kind of attitude is that, Elara?"

He trembled with rage as he demanded, "Lily is our real daughter! You're just an adopted child. How dare you speak to her like that?"

My mother quickly stepped in to hold my father back. "Let's talk this through calmly. Ella just needs some time to come to terms with things…"

She turned to me, her tone softening a little. "Ella, Lily has just come home. Can't you be a bit more understanding? She's been through so much all these years—"

Looking at her feigned expression of concern, I felt my heart turning cold. In my past life, this was exactly the kind of gentleness she showed me while hurting me terribly.

"Mom," I interrupted her. "Are you saying that I'm the one to blame for all her suffering out there?"

My mother faltered, and her eyes darted away. "That's not what I meant..."

"Elara, you are vile!" Tristan shouted. "Lily already said she doesn't blame you, and here you are still being so aggressive!"

All my other childhood friends chimed in one after another.

"Exactly! She usually acts so gentle, but it turns out that was all fake."

"See how kind Lily is? She even spoke up for Elara."

Amidst their combined condemnation, Lilith shot me a smug look.

I gripped the consecrated sword tightly and let out a cold laugh. "Haven't you all always said I was making things up? Well, now you've gotten your wish and seen a real ghost. Happy?""You're courting death!" Lilith snarled. Her rotting face looked even more horrifying under the moonlight. Then, she lunged at me with such terrifying speed that she was nothing but a blur.Silas stepped forward instantly. His celestial blade swept through the air in a burst of golden light. The sound of metal clashing rang out with a loud clang. Lilith was forced back several steps, but she immediately charged again. At the same time, the seven cursed wraiths lunged from different directions."Hold the pentacle!" Silas shouted as he hurled seven runestones, each one striking the seven wraiths dead center on their foreheads.I immediately retreated to the center of the pentacle, bit open my fingertip, and drew a blood rune on my palm. It flared with a blinding red light. The seven wraiths let out

Tristan screamed hysterically, "Why won't you save me? You heartless woman!"I was about to respond when a cool voice came from behind me. "What's with all the noise?"Silas had appeared in the hallway at some point, holding a mug of steaming herbal tea. He wore a simple white shirt, looking so clean and pristine that he seemed completely out of place against the bloody scene. When Tristan saw him, it was like he had found one last lifeline. "You're an archmage, aren't you? Please, save me! I'll pay any amount!"Silas didn't even glance at him. He walked straight to me and handed me the tea. "Drink this. It will expel the undead poison in you."I took the mug and felt the warmth seeping through the ceramic. When Tristan saw us ignoring him, he grew even more frantic. "Elara Ashbourne! You bitch! Have you been hooking up with this stranger all along? Is that why you don't care whether we live or die?"Silas finally turned to look at him, a cold glint flashing in his amber eyes. "

I nodded through gritted teeth as cold sweat dripped down my forehead. His fingers pressed slowly along my wound, and I could feel a warm energy seeping into my skin, like flames burning away the dark energy that had invaded my body."Who exactly are you?" I asked breathlessly"Silas Evernight," he said without looking up. "76th successor of the Obsidian Order."He continued calmly, "It seems the possessed corpse you encountered is quite powerful. She wouldn't have been able to injure you so badly that the undead poison entered your system, otherwise."I was silent for a moment before asking again, "Can you get rid of her for good?"He finally looked up at me, a sharp glint flashing in his amber eyes. "Yes."The next morning, I was jolted awake by a torrent of frantic knocks on my door. When I opened it, Tristan was kneeling on the doorstep, his face covered in blood, and his suit torn to shreds. He was shaking all over."Ella! Save me!" he begged in a hoarse voice as he grabbe

My father was at a loss for words. His face cycled through shades of pale and red.Meanwhile, my mother threw herself at my feet and clung to my legs. "Ella, I'm begging you! I'll get down on my knees! Please save us!"I pried her fingers off one by one. "You all thought I was making things up, didn't you? That I was just jealous of Lilith? But now you come begging?""We were wrong! We truly know we were wrong!" The last remaining few of my childhood friends crowded around me, falling over each other to apologize. I ignored them completely and headed straight for the door."Elara Ashbourne!" Tristan suddenly shouted harshly. "Are you really that heartless? You'd just stand there and watch us die?"I stopped and turned back to look at him. The face that had once made my heart flutter was now etched with nothing but fear and selfishness."Tristan, do you remember what you did to me in the previous life?" I asked softly. He froze. "W-What previous life?""You held my head in a t

Through the surveillance footage of the Ashbourne residence provided by the police, I clearly saw the slaughter that had taken place the night before. After I left, Lilith's skin began to rot rapidly, revealing the livid corpse spots underneath. Her eyeballs fell out of their sockets, leaving only two dark, hollow cavities, yet the corners of her mouth twisted upward in a grotesque smile."Ah!" Tristan let out a bloodcurdling scream and stumbled backward.Lilith's rotting fingers suddenly elongated and clamped tightly around his throat. "Tris, didn't you say you liked me a lot?"Her voice had turned hoarse and broken, as if rising from the depths of hell. "Then stay with me forever…"Tristan struggled with all his might and finally broke free, screaming as he ran downstairs, "Mr. and Mrs. Ashbourne! Run!""It's no use. None of you is getting away," Lilith said with a sinister laugh. Then, she opened her bloody maw and lunged at them. They scattered in panic, but even so, they f

The stench of decay coming from Lilith grew even more pungent. I knew she probably felt she had them completely under control and would soon close in on them. The torrent of accusations against me continued without end.Unable to take it anymore, I slammed my suitcase onto the floor. "Enough!"The entire room fell silent in an instant. My father's face turned ashen, and my mother clutched her chest as she staggered back a step. All eight of my childhood friends stared at me as if I were insane."Elara, have you lost your mind?" Tristan barked. "You're throwing things in front of your parents now? What a lack of manners! As expected from someone of low birth, indeed. You're not even close compared to Lily!"Lilith shook her head and tugged at his sleeve. "Forget it, Tris. Ella must have just lost her head for a moment...""No!" Tristan said firmly. "This time, she needs to be taught a lesson!"After some discussion, they decided to lock me in my room to reflect. Once they had dr
