LOGINAs I locked eyes with the mystery man, the rest of the world seemed to fade away. I forgot where I was and all the steps that had brought me to that exact moment, but somehow I knew like a spiritual being was telling me, I felt it in the depths of my soul that this was the man I was going to spend the rest of my life with. I took in his features, he was a tall man about 6”5, his muscles were very defined in the tailored tuxedo he was wearing, he had a chiseled jawline, and his mouth was set tight like he was trying not to give any sense of emotion away. His hair was pitch black and it was set in a rough style that only the most handsome of men could pull off. The pupils of his eyes were pure black and his stare had a piercing sincerity to it. He looked very dominant and he gave off the aura and charisma of a real man.
I looked into his eyes and found it so alluring the way he was staring right back into mine. Neither of us said anything, but I was sure that whatever this sudden rush of emotions was, the feeling was mutual. He was staring at me like he saw something in my eyes; it seemed like our souls recognized each other and knew something we didn’t.My pulse quickened and my heart started to pound, a spot just underneath my collarbone was throbbing like crazy and I felt a strong urge to bare my neck to this man. I was more than willing to do that because all I wanted at that moment was for him to kiss me. He began to move closer towards me and I thought that was what he was about to do when I heard a very low and animal-like growl coming from him and I saw a weird flash in his eyes.I was very much taken aback by that and I immediately snapped back to reality because I found that it was a very strange thing for a person to do. I didn’t understand what was going on and I started to look confused. As the man saw the look in my eyes; he took a step back from me, he gave me one last glance and then he just walked right out of the apartment like we did not just share the most intimate gaze.Reine ran out after the man giving me some time to come back to my senses. I sat down on the couch and recounted everything that had gone down since I walked into the apartment building in my head but I could not seem to make sense of any of it. I remembered the way the man growled at me and how he walked away from me and I started to feel very angry at the whole situation.I was practically steaming from anger when Reine walked back into the apartment looking like a lost puppy. As soon as I saw my best friend I screamed out “What the actual f^ck just happened Reine? Who was that man, and what did he just do to me??”Reine looked surprised by my outburst, I was usually the calm and collected one but I understood that the events of the day were enough to trigger such a reaction in anyone. I calmed me down, got a glass of water for me to drink and sat down beside me on the couch.I stared at her waiting for an explanation, I saw that I was struggling and didn’t know how to answer my questions so I asked more calmly this time “Reine who exactly was that man?”Reine finds her words to respond this time, and she says “That was my older brother and only sibling, Lucien Duvall. I know you have a lot of questions as to what just happened and I know that you would be shocked about some things I will reveal to you about myself and my family but I beg of you, please remain calm and know that I kept all of this away from you for your good, you remain my best friend regardless of anything that happens and I hope you know that I love you as the sister I never had.”I was surprised at that response from my best friend, I thought I knew everything about Reine, I thought we had shared everything about each other and I was still confused as to how I felt all those things for Lucien in such a short period, We never even uttered any words to each other.I decided to stay calm and hear my friend out although I was anxious and curious inside. I eagerly waited for this revelation from Reine but just as she was about to talk, she got a phone call. I watched as my friend jumped from her seat and went to take the call in another room.Shortly after, Reine emerged from the other room and she seemed to be in a rush. She told me that she needed to leave immediately as something had come up back at her home and she had to be there. She begged me to trust our friendship and promised that she would either be back home as soon as possible or she would send word to me as soon as she could.I remember that I sat on the same spot and watched as my best friend left the apartment, I felt distraught at the events of the day and I felt somewhat betrayed that Reine had been keeping things from me. I remained in the same spot long after Reine had left and even late into the night. I felt extremely exhausted and I eventually ended up sleeping off on the couch.Deep in slumber, I began a dream that I had come to recognize all too well. I found myself strolling through a forest under the moonlight; the trees were unlike any I had ever seen, with a silver light that shimmered from their leaves and lit up a small path in front of me. I felt a gentle cool breeze against my skin and I ultimately felt at peace in that strange place. As I walked the small well-lit path, I started to realize that I was not alone, there was a creature lurking in the shadows. It didn’t seem evil or like an enemy though, in fact, it felt like this creature was a friend, one I was already familiar with. This was the point I usually woke up on other days and I had never actually gotten to see what the creature looked like but that day it was different. I heard a howl and the moon seemed to shine brighter in that instant. The creature slowly emerged from the shadow and for the first time, I got to take a good look at it. It had a pure white fur and it stood tall, it looked like it wasn’t going to hurt me but as it stared at her I saw that its eyes were a cobalt blue shade just like hers.I screamed and jumped from the couch, it was the fifth time in a row I had been getting these dreams but this was the clearest one so far and I was pretty sure about it this time. That was a wolf!Lucien's POVIt was almost midnight and there was still no sign of Alec. I did not move from her bedside even for a minute, but Brea worked tirelessly. Replacing the cold cloth on Aimee’s brow, checking her pulse and adjusting the herbal elixir she’d mixed to slow the progress of the poison. Each time she finished examining her she looked at me in the same careful way and I knew what she meant. We were just buying more time, that's all.Aimee drifted in and out of consciousness. When she was awake she murmured things I could not make any sense of. One time she said Reine's name, then she called my name and reached out and I took her hand and held it before she settled again.Shadow had gone entirely still inside me which was even more frightening than his usual restlessness. I kept pressing against him to remind both him and myself that nothing had happened yet. She was still here. Her chest still rose and fell. Her hand was still warm in mine. She was still here.Isaac appeared in t
Aimee's POVThe castle was recovering slowly, and pack members were starting to return to their homes. The healers stayed working through the night on the injured warriors, while the maids scrubbed every room the oracle had cleared, and by the second morning back, it almost smelled like the old days again.Almost.I wanted to hold onto the warmth of what we had won, to stay present in it, but Reine's absence was like a bad omen I couldn't just ignore. The third morning back in Moonstone, I took a walk on the castle grounds and found myself in the garden. It was the only place in the castle that looked as if the dark forces hadn't touched it at all. The roses were overgrown from neglect for weeks, but at least they were still there. I was pulling weeds out from around the base of the closest bed when Sera appeared at the garden entrance. She looked better than the last time I had seen her. The healer had kept her for a full day and released her just that morning. She was still pale and
Lucien's POVReclaiming the pack wasn't what I thought it would be.I had spent nights in the forest camp imagining what it would feel like to walk back through these doors, but now, as I stepped into the main hall, I just felt quiet and numb. The castle was still structurally sound, but the war had left its mark. The furniture was destroyed, and it was a mess everywhere. The smell of those devilish watchdogs still clung to the walls, making Shadow's nose curl. The maids emerged slowly as word spread that the pack had returned. Some were tearful. Some stood very still in the hallways as though they needed a moment to believe it. I recognized most of them and told each one directly that they were safe. But one maid I did not recognize. She appeared in the corridor outside the dining hall while Alec and I were going over the status of the grounds. Young, slight, dark hair pinned back from a face that carried a weird expression. She bowed immediately."Alpha. I am glad you have returned.
Lucien’s PovThe forest blurred past me in streaks of dark and silver.Shadow ran with full force and I didn't bother to hold him back. This battle was too high staked to hold anything back right now. The future of my pack was at stake, and I would not fail them as their alpha, and Shadow understood this too.Menae ran beside us.I had never seen anything like it in all my years. She moved through the dark forest like lightning, white and fluid and utterly silent, her paws barely disturbing the ground beneath them. Every time Shadow glanced at her the bond between them flared, it was like they merged and moved together like something combined. Something the dark lord had never had to contend with before. The warriors spread out behind us in a wide formation. Damon held the left flank with six of our strongest fighters. Isaac anchored the right. Alec ran closest to me on my left, his brown wolf keeping pace without effort, as steady as he had always been in every battle we had fought t
Lucien’s POVAfter Cassandra disappeared, I stood behind that tree for a long time, long after the sound of her footsteps faded and the forest claimed her. I allowed her walk away. I did not move. I just stood there seething with anger with that single image burning behind my eyes.Cassandra.I've known her since we were kids. I trusted her like I would trust my own sister, and I knew she loved me, but even though I never returned the feelings, the familiarity between us should have commanded some form of loyalty, but she destroyed even that. She had given them everything. The battle documents, the maps of our weak points, the hidden routes through the pack's outer walls that only those closest to me knew about. I had spent weeks wondering how the dark forces had known exactly where to strike, exactly which pressure points to press and which warriors to target first. Now I knew.It was her.Shadow growled low in my chest, a slow and dangerous sound like a tremor building beneath the e
Lucien's POV I knew she was scared for our well-being. I too was scared as to what might be waiting for us when he got close to the pack. With each step we took, I could feel the dark aura of the dark forces all around the forest. It was thanks to the moon goddess that it did not spread to where we were able to camp. I knew what we were about to do was risky and we could not bring everyone with us so we did not gather much attention from anyone if any attack ensued, it meant we would not be able to protect ourselves very well.We walked a distance before we finally decided to stop. Our present location was at the peak of the aura of the dark forces. The aura was sucking up most of our energy. We had not worked for a while but it felt like we did and that was not good.So this was the plan. This was a way to weaken us so we would not be able to attack and defeat them. The dark Lord knows that he is no match for us. Our wolves were strong and with just a single bite they would die. Th
Aimee's POVA week went by with the dark clouds still hovering around the realm and pack. It stopped snowing two days ago, but it was still not good enough. Most of the pack members had fallen so sick that they could barely move a step without the help of someone. Both the pack hospital and the realm'
Aimee's POVNow I understood why the Oracle said it was a story for Lucien to tell. He was there and he felt so many emotions all at once, it was a very traumatic experience at such a tender age. It was so sad that things happened the way they did and he witnessed it all.He has been troubled since a
Lucien's POVI knew Aimee was worried about me because I could feel it. Our mate bond was making me feel her emotions, but I blocked mine from getting to her. If she did, it would be too much for her. I didn't want her to see me as weak.I was trying to be the best and be strong before everyone, but r
Aimee's POVI hated listening to this conversation. Lucien was trying his best to protect the pack and Nightfall Nexus so why were they doubting him. He has been protecting them all this while so what made them believe he would fail them now.“Why all this assumption though? The Alpha has been doing a
