LOGINIsaac and I drove a couple of miles away from the city, I had maintained my curiosity and hadn’t asked him any questions, but as I saw that he continued to drive further and further into the woods and away from civilization, I could not contain it any longer and I had to ask. “Where are we going?” He gave me a comforting grin and said, "I know this must all seem odd to you, but I assure you, there is nothing to be scared of, you are going to be alright." I remained curious, but something about Isaac's attitude put me at ease. Maybe it was the sincerity in his eyes or the air of authority that surrounded him. But whatever it was, I found myself nodding hesitantly.
We continued to drive a little further into the woods, but then we got to a point and Isaac said we would have to continue our journey on foot. He led me through the woods, weaving through the narrow paths with a practiced ease and after some minutes of walking, we arrived at a strange structure in the middle of nowhere. It looked like a doorway sculpted out of stones but I didn’t see anything on the other side of the doorway. I looked at Isaac with a confused expression but he just gave me a mischievous smirk. He touched a point in the doorway and said something strange and all of a sudden a shimmering light portal flickered into existence before us.I was so shocked by the appearance of the portal that I had to take a couple of steps back away from it. I could not believe what I was seeing and my eyes went wide as I stared at the strange magical doorway. I turned and looked to Isaac for some form of explanation, but he just gave me his usual gentle reassuring smile again and asked me to walk into it. I nodded at him, took a deep breath to gather my confidence and kept a stern face trying to look prepared for whatever I would find on the other side then I stepped forward, crossing the threshold. The world on the other side was not at all what I was expecting. I found myself in the woods like where I had just stepped out of but there were clear differences between the two places. For one the trees there were much larger and their leaves sparkled in the sunlight, there were unusual creatures and I felt an unusual sense of calmness and familiarity in this world.I was still looking around trying to get used to the new world and to organize my feelings when Isaac also stepped through and stood beside me. I looked back at the doorway and the magical portal had disappeared and there was nothing on the other side as before. Isaac explained that when I was ready to go back it would be activated again. He also explained that the world we were in was called the Nightfall Nexus and it was a mystical world where supernatural beings and creatures existed. He said that the world was kept away from the human world to keep them safe and to maintain the balance and warned that I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone else about the place. After I had gotten over the fact that we had literally just taken a portal into an actual mystical world, we continued our journey into the woods. Isaac explained that we were headed to where Reine lived and that he was not authorized to give me any further information than that. I was getting tired of the secrecy but I couldn’t take out my frustration on him because he was just doing as he had been told, and my only compensation was that I would soon see my best friend again. It seemed like the woods was endless and we continued to walk for a couple of minutes, then again we got to a point and there was a car waiting for us.I got into the car alone and was waiting for Isaac to do the same, but he told me that was where he would leave me. He said he had other pressing matters to attend to and that I was in good hands and nothing would happen to me. The driver didn’t say a word to me and just continued to drive straight ahead. After a couple of miles, I started seeing a semblance of civilization again. I was seeing a lot of people but they all looked different from people back home that I was used to. Everyone was taller and had a majestic air to them, even the buildings were exceptional and everything just looked absolutely beautiful. We drove into a small city and the driver finally spoke to me. He said he had been given orders to drive me straight to the moonstone pack and that was where we were headed. Apparently we had gotten to the Nexus capital and it was where the strongest beings in this world, the leaders operated from. We traveled a bit further and I felt a sudden sense of nostalgia like I had been there before. I figured that was impossible because the entire experience was new to me, but I couldn't help but feel a pull and some form of attachment to this world. While I took in the views and calmed my emotions, I suddenly remembered that the Nightfall Nexus was also Reine’s home, I couldn’t believe that she had kept such a big thing from me, we had lived together for the past 3 years and I began to wonder if my best friend was actually human at all. I was still contemplating this question in my mind when the driver announced that we had gotten to the moonstone pack and we would be getting to where Reine lived in a couple of minutes.I started to feel a burning sense of anticipation and weirdly the spot under my collar bone started to throb again. I was eager to see Reine, but I mostly wanted to meet Lucien again. I was a bit worried and several questions went through my mind. Would he be friendly and welcoming, or would he completely disregard me and I also wondered if the strange moment we had meant anything to him at all. I stopped worrying and made up my mind that I would be unaffected no matter what happened between Lucien and I because I would never let any man have that power over me, especially not a rude and uncultured man like him and then I decided that I would focus on exploring this new world.I was still enjoying the views of the city and I was pleasantly surprised with the way the people dressed and how they lived when I saw a building from afar. It was the most majestic building I had ever seen in my life and I was surprised that was where the driver was headed, it was a castle fit for kings and queens, and the only thought that came to me head was if this actually where Reine lived!Lucien's POVIt was almost midnight and there was still no sign of Alec. I did not move from her bedside even for a minute, but Brea worked tirelessly. Replacing the cold cloth on Aimee’s brow, checking her pulse and adjusting the herbal elixir she’d mixed to slow the progress of the poison. Each time she finished examining her she looked at me in the same careful way and I knew what she meant. We were just buying more time, that's all.Aimee drifted in and out of consciousness. When she was awake she murmured things I could not make any sense of. One time she said Reine's name, then she called my name and reached out and I took her hand and held it before she settled again.Shadow had gone entirely still inside me which was even more frightening than his usual restlessness. I kept pressing against him to remind both him and myself that nothing had happened yet. She was still here. Her chest still rose and fell. Her hand was still warm in mine. She was still here.Isaac appeared in t
Aimee's POVThe castle was recovering slowly, and pack members were starting to return to their homes. The healers stayed working through the night on the injured warriors, while the maids scrubbed every room the oracle had cleared, and by the second morning back, it almost smelled like the old days again.Almost.I wanted to hold onto the warmth of what we had won, to stay present in it, but Reine's absence was like a bad omen I couldn't just ignore. The third morning back in Moonstone, I took a walk on the castle grounds and found myself in the garden. It was the only place in the castle that looked as if the dark forces hadn't touched it at all. The roses were overgrown from neglect for weeks, but at least they were still there. I was pulling weeds out from around the base of the closest bed when Sera appeared at the garden entrance. She looked better than the last time I had seen her. The healer had kept her for a full day and released her just that morning. She was still pale and
Lucien's POVReclaiming the pack wasn't what I thought it would be.I had spent nights in the forest camp imagining what it would feel like to walk back through these doors, but now, as I stepped into the main hall, I just felt quiet and numb. The castle was still structurally sound, but the war had left its mark. The furniture was destroyed, and it was a mess everywhere. The smell of those devilish watchdogs still clung to the walls, making Shadow's nose curl. The maids emerged slowly as word spread that the pack had returned. Some were tearful. Some stood very still in the hallways as though they needed a moment to believe it. I recognized most of them and told each one directly that they were safe. But one maid I did not recognize. She appeared in the corridor outside the dining hall while Alec and I were going over the status of the grounds. Young, slight, dark hair pinned back from a face that carried a weird expression. She bowed immediately."Alpha. I am glad you have returned.
Lucien’s PovThe forest blurred past me in streaks of dark and silver.Shadow ran with full force and I didn't bother to hold him back. This battle was too high staked to hold anything back right now. The future of my pack was at stake, and I would not fail them as their alpha, and Shadow understood this too.Menae ran beside us.I had never seen anything like it in all my years. She moved through the dark forest like lightning, white and fluid and utterly silent, her paws barely disturbing the ground beneath them. Every time Shadow glanced at her the bond between them flared, it was like they merged and moved together like something combined. Something the dark lord had never had to contend with before. The warriors spread out behind us in a wide formation. Damon held the left flank with six of our strongest fighters. Isaac anchored the right. Alec ran closest to me on my left, his brown wolf keeping pace without effort, as steady as he had always been in every battle we had fought t
Lucien’s POVAfter Cassandra disappeared, I stood behind that tree for a long time, long after the sound of her footsteps faded and the forest claimed her. I allowed her walk away. I did not move. I just stood there seething with anger with that single image burning behind my eyes.Cassandra.I've known her since we were kids. I trusted her like I would trust my own sister, and I knew she loved me, but even though I never returned the feelings, the familiarity between us should have commanded some form of loyalty, but she destroyed even that. She had given them everything. The battle documents, the maps of our weak points, the hidden routes through the pack's outer walls that only those closest to me knew about. I had spent weeks wondering how the dark forces had known exactly where to strike, exactly which pressure points to press and which warriors to target first. Now I knew.It was her.Shadow growled low in my chest, a slow and dangerous sound like a tremor building beneath the e
Lucien's POV I knew she was scared for our well-being. I too was scared as to what might be waiting for us when he got close to the pack. With each step we took, I could feel the dark aura of the dark forces all around the forest. It was thanks to the moon goddess that it did not spread to where we were able to camp. I knew what we were about to do was risky and we could not bring everyone with us so we did not gather much attention from anyone if any attack ensued, it meant we would not be able to protect ourselves very well.We walked a distance before we finally decided to stop. Our present location was at the peak of the aura of the dark forces. The aura was sucking up most of our energy. We had not worked for a while but it felt like we did and that was not good.So this was the plan. This was a way to weaken us so we would not be able to attack and defeat them. The dark Lord knows that he is no match for us. Our wolves were strong and with just a single bite they would die. Th
Lucien’s POVI was dumbfounded at the sight before me. It seemed almost like a dream but I knew it certainly was not a dream. I was awake and conscious to know that this was real. Aimee was not only levitating but she was glowing like the moon.I wanted to believe that she was doing this on purpose
Aimee's POVThe car drove into the premises of the castle that stood in pride before me. There was a huge water fountain at the far right side of the compound. It looked neat and well-kept. There were a lot of people standing at various points in the compound and I could only guess that they were…
I woke up feeling as confused as ever. I had finally seen what the creature from my dreams looked like, I was very sure that it was a wolf I saw but still, I had no idea what it all meant. I remembered that Reine had left so abruptly the previous day and I couldn’t help but feel a sudden pang of lo
As I locked eyes with the mystery man, the rest of the world seemed to fade away. I forgot where I was and all the steps that had brought me to that exact moment, but somehow I knew like a spiritual being was telling me, I felt it in the depths of my soul that this was the man I was going to spend
